Although I’ve been a fan of stop-motion for years, the craft and artistry that goes into this particular animation technique continue to be a source of amazement for me. The tactile nature of the puppets, sets and props, combined with the attention and time that goes into it, means that when a director gets it right, they can be some of the most exciting works in the short film arena. Case in point: Joseph Wallace’s new film Salvation Has No Name, which not only made it to the elite cohort of short films on this year’s BAFTA longlist but also did the same for the 2022 BIFAs. A modern epic sporting a timeless aesthetic, Wallace returns to Dn with his most ambitious work yet, a film that was years in the making, but well worth the wait.

Although we’re intrigued by the complete Maf programme and I could probably spend the whole of this article discussing Alberto Vázquez’s unique feature Unicorn Wars, with an impressive 10 screenings dedicated to shorts – Short Films for Children,...

Maisie Williams To Exec Produce UK Animation
Exclusive: Maisie Williams and her production company Rapt are partnering with UK indie Delaval Film on a short stop motion animation from The Sparks Brothers animation director Joseph Wallace. The pic, Salvation Has No Name, began production in 2020 at Aardman in Bristol and has since moved to Media City in Manchester to re-mount the shoot safely during Covid; it is due to wrap in September. The film will explore themes of xenophobia and the refugee crisis and is told through a dynamic mixture of color and black with a dramatic narrative and international all-female voice cast, including Money Heist star Itziar Ituño. In the film, a troupe of clowns gather to perform a story about a Priest and a refugee but as their misguided tale unfolds, the boundaries between fiction and reality begin to fray. Horror can be all about the jump scares, or all about the scares. Some though work at a more cerebral level and hits the emotions more. Lake Mungo is a horror that may be too subtle for some, but for others who like this kind of film it creates a truly chilling experience.
Filmed in a documentary style, Lake Mungo looks at the tragic drowning of sixteen-year-old Alice Palmer and how her family deal with her death. With the help of a parapsychologist, they uncover secrets she was hiding, and find Alice was being haunted by Lake Mungo.
In the film, we look at two things, that is the story of Alice herself and her family. With the family we look at how...
