Yesterday, news broke that Damon Lindelof, co-creator of hit shows like “Lost” and “The Leftovers,” was working on a new “Star Wars” feature film, to be directed by Oscar-winning documentarian and “Ms. Marvel” director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
Now TheWrap has confirmed that Justin Britt-Gibson will co-write the screenplay alongside Lindelof. In addition, other new details have emerged about what the project is and how Lindelof is developing the story.
According to a report in THR, a writers’ room was convened shortly after Star Wars Celebration, the all-“Star Wars” convention that was held in Anaheim, California, across the street from Disneyland earlier this year. The writer’s room was held for two weeks in July and included participation from Lindelof’s “Leftovers” collaborator (and “Station Eleven” creator) Patrick Somerville; “Obi-Wan Kenobi” consulting producer Rayna McClendon and Andy Greenwald, creator of the short-lived but deeply brilliant USA series “Briarpatch,” which had the...

Christopher Nolan must have gotten tired of being called a grocery store manager on Twitter because he has released a statement refuting Anne Hathaway’s claim that he does not allow chairs on set.
The meme was created earlier this week from a “Les Miserables” reunion between Hathaway and Hugh Jackman for Variety’s TV series “Actors on Actors.” Hathaway, who worked with Nolan on “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Interstellar,” said during the interview that the filmmaker doesn’t allow chairs on set because he believes that “if you have chairs, people will sit, and if they’re sitting, they’re not working.”
“I mean, he has these incredible movies in terms of scope and ambition and technical prowess and emotion. It always arrives at the end under schedule and under budget. I think he’s onto something with the chair thing,” added Hathaway.

Christopher Nolan does not ban chairs from his movie sets, a spokesperson for the director has confirmed to IndieWire. Social media buzz over an alleged chair ban on Nolan’s sets erupted June 29 after Variety published an “Actors on Actors” video interview between Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman in which the former complimented Nolan’s decision not to allow chairs on set. Hathaway has appeared in Nolan’s blockbusters “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Interstellar.”
“For the record, the only things banned from [Christopher Nolan’s] sets are cell phones (not always successfully) and smoking (very successfully),” Nolan’s spokesperson Kelly Bush Novak of ID said in a statement. “The chairs Anne was referring to are the directors chairs clustered around the video monitor, allocated on the basis of hierarchy not physical need. Chris chooses not to use his but has never banned chairs from the set. Cast and crew can sit wherever...

Christopher Nolan’s “no chairs on set” rule has gone viral after the director’s “Interstellar” and “The Dark Knight Rises” actress Anne Hathaway brought it up during a recent interview with Hugh Jackman on Variety’s “Actors on Actors” video series. Nolan fans have known about the rule for quite some time, as “Dunkirk” actors Mark Rylance and Barry Keoghan told The Independent in 2017 that Nolan bans chairs and water bottles on set. Hathaway appeared complimentary about Nolan’s decision.
“He doesn’t allow chairs, and his reasoning is, if you have chairs, people will sit, and if they’re sitting, they’re not working,” the Oscar-winning actress said “I mean, he has these incredible movies in terms of scope and ambition and technical prowess and emotion. It always arrives at the end under schedule and under budget. I think he’s onto something with the chair thing.”

The WGA Awards boosted a pair of movie screenplays into Oscar frontrunner status on Saturday night, handing its marquee Original Screenplay award to Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won for Neon’s Parasite, and its Adapted Screenplay award to Taika Wiatiti for Searchlight’s Jojo Rabbit. Both of the winning scripts are nominated for Oscars on February 9.
This year the guild wasted no time in its 72nd edition, awarding its marquee prizes early in the night in simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York. Many of the film-side nominees gathered in the Edison Ballroom in NYC, so as to make the shorter jump to the BAFTAs which are Sunday in London.

The Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won-penned South Korean class thriller “Parasite” won Best Original Screenplay and Taika Waititi’s Nazi satire “Jojo Rabbit” won Best Adapted Screenplay at the Writers Guild Awards Saturday night.
The annual awards, which honor the best in film, TV, and radio writing, were handed out at dual ceremonies in New York and Los Angeles.
Both “Parasite” and “Jojo Rabbit” are in the running for Oscars in their respective categories.
“Parasite” bested three Best Original Screenplay nominees up for the Writers Guild Award: “1917,” “Knives Out,” “Marriage Story,” and “Parasite.” The WGA swapped the fifth Oscar-nominated script, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” in favor of a nomination for “Booksmart.”

The Writers Guild of America revealed its winners for the 72nd annual edition of its awards, which were held simultaneously at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles and at the Edison Ballroom in New York City on February 1. About 15,000 WGA members vote on the best writing of the prior calendar year in an array of genres.
But beware Oscar predictors: Often a few film scripts nominated for an Academy Award are deemed ineligible. Only screenplays written under the guild’s guidelines or those of several international partners are allowed to vie for the WGA Awards. That accounts for its relatively low success rate at previewing the eventual Oscar nominees compared to the other guilds.
Among those ineligible for consideration this year are some of the leading Oscar contenders, including the original screenplays for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Pain and Glory.” The former is by Quentin Tarantino,...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Watchmen” Episode 8, “A God Walks Into Abar.”]
So much of what’s made “Watchmen” one of 2019’s best series is how effectively it brings superheroes down to size. From keeping Sister Night (Regina King) grounded in Angela Abar’s perspective to watching a caped crusader (Jeremy Irons) rip one in the middle of his own trial, Damon Lindelof’s adaptation is intent on demystifying the mythical attachment we have to men and women wearing masks. They’re just people, people are flawed, so you have to look behind the mask to see what’s really going on. And yet no one person is just anything. As exemplified by riveting and revealing episodic storytelling, where new characters emerge and earn their hourlong spotlights, “Watchmen” intensifies the majesty of our human experience, even as it keeps its cast on equal footing to the rest of us.

Director Brad Bird and Damon Lindelof say Walt Disney inspired their new movie “Tomorrowland,” so it’s not surprising the mysterious sci-fi adventure received a royal rollout Thursday night. George Clooney, Britt Robertson and Hugh Laurie star in the film, which debuted in 701 hand-picked “movie palaces” across the country. “Tomorrowland” was not only inspired by the iconic founder of Disneyland, but one of its park rides as well, according to Bird and Lindelof, who co-wrote with Jeff Jensen and co-produced with Jeffrey Chernov. It would have taken in more than the $725,000 it did at the box office had Disney gone wider with.

Brad Bird has given us the coolest movie of the year—if you share his youthful belief that the future was always supposed to be cool. That’s what I was taught to believe by such visionaries as Walt Disney, whose optimistic outlook is keenly felt in Tomorrowland. To be clear, director Bird and his co-writers, Jeff Jensen and Damon Lindelof, aren’t blind to the realities of modern life. They introduce cynicism and realism into their narrative in a way that Disney might have dodged. But ultimately they convey a message of hope that’s rare in contemporary cinema, where dystopian visions prevail. I think Walt would have approved of Bird’s alternate view. And I suspect he would have...

I love ambition. When you’re a filmmaker with some measure of clout, it always makes sense to really shoot for the stars, as it were. Not everyone does it, but director Brad Bird sure does. On Friday, Bird’s new flight of fancy Tomorrowland opens in theaters, hoping to capture the imaginations of families throughout the world. After the wild successes of The Incredibles and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Bird could basically do whatever he wanted, so he teamed up with scribe Damon Lindelof in order to make this unique tale happen. Not everyone agrees with me, but on my end, I’m thrilled that they did. Tomorrowland is something very singular and enjoyable. In short, Tomorrowland is about imagination fueling the future. Without giving too much away, there is an actual place called Tomorrowland that basically features the world’s best and brightest. George Clooney plays an inventor...

Four years after the greatly entertaining Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Brad Bird tackles the live action dimension for a second time with Tomorrowland, a massive sci-fi production intended for the whole family. Despite a rather enjoyable first part and Bird's undeniable visual talent, the film unfortunately sinks into over-cheesiness and sacrifices its ending for some damaging Disney propaganda, which is more reminiscent of what the company used to do in the past rather than of the better and riskier productions (John Carter, The Lone Ranger) that they've been doing recently. Although the original story is penned by Jeff Jensen, Damon Lindelhof and Bird himself, Tomorrowland got its inspiration from the homonymous themed land of the Disney parks that were conceived in the 1950s and 1960s....

This may be the hardest review I've ever had to write. After all, I think Brad Bird is a certifiably great filmmaker. I have been a fan of his work as long as I've seen his name on things, starting with "Family Dog," the animated episode of "Amazing Stories." So of course, I walk into his films hoping to like them. The year it was released, "The Incredibles" was my pick as best film, and both "The Iron Giant" and "Ratatouille" have also found spots in my top ten lists at the end of the year. In fact, for years, one of the things I was proudest of in all of the work I've done writing about movies from the early days of Ain't It Cool News to right now involved "The Iron Giant." That film is beloved now, and deservedly so. There was a point, though, when it looked...

While the vast majority of these clips are made up of footage we’ve already seen, the TV spots still harbour some new segments that we’ve yet to come across up until now, including a rather wondrous shot of how the denizens of the titular utopia commute: spoilers, it’s a jet pack.
Starring Britt Robertson as the wide-eyed and adventurous Casey, Tomorrowland will orbit around her journey from discovering a seemingly innocuous pin – emblazioned with a large T, no less – to becoming the city’s only hope of survival. As trite as the ‘chosen one’ trait has become, there’s enough quality on both...

Whoa, you guys. George Clooney just revealed a super-cool Disney secret. The A-lister sat down with E! News' Catt Sadler to talk about his upcoming film Tomorrowland, and when asked how he was pitched the elaborate film by director Brad Bird and writers Damon Lindelof and Jeff Jensen, Clooney shared a very "interesting" tale that brought to light an otherwise unknown plan that was never ultimately brought to life. He tells us that they "came to my house with a box that they dug out of the archives at the basement at Disney. It said 1952 on the box. And they open it up and there's all these weird things, futuristic kinda things—futuristic in 1952—and a blueprint of Tomorrowland that...

Based on this new trailer, it looks like almost every shot we've seen so far from Brad Bird's "Tomorrowland" is from the first third of the movie. Either that, or it's a very short movie. Of all of the summer blockbusters, this is the one I know the least about. There's been a cone of silence over their post-production that has been genuinely impressive. I haven't heard anything about screenings. I haven't heard from anyone who's seen it. I haven't heard a peep, and this late in the process, that is enormously rare. The new trailer for the film that was just released is fun, and I'm certainly excited to see the movie. But I still feel like they're holding back, and I'm curious why. This new trailer makes it clear that whoever the mysterious figures are who are chasing the main characters, they're not human, and Bird seems...

Since its inception, the overriding theme associated with Brad Bird’s Tomorrowland has been the majestic nature of the titular utopia. As the product of some of the greatest minds of the 20th century – including Walt Disney and Albert Einstein – it’s been described as an alternate reality in which anything is possible. Futurism 101, basically. But Disney’s upcoming sci-fi flick has plenty of room for action sequences, too, with this latest trailer showcasing some of the inventive weaponry that Britt Robertson and George Clooney will need if they are to fight for tomorrow.
With little over a month to its release, Disney has essentially reached the sweet spot in its Tomorrowland marketing, revealing just enough of the film’s premise and characters to give audiences a gist of the action, all the while keeping the pressing questions – how does Robertson’s character fit into proceedings? – largely under wraps. Here...

Brad Bird's Tomorrowland hits theaters in one month, and to get you ready for it, Disney has released a final trailer for the film filled with action, along with information on seeing some of the footage in IMAX early. Come inside to learn more!
Let's get to the trailer first, because, let's be honest, we haven't seen enough footage of this film yet. The trailer is far more action-oriented than the previous ones, and somewhat plays out more like a clip from the film than anything else.
Pretty awesome though, huh? While we still don't have a strong sense of the story at this point, I can't say it's a bad thing. The movie still looks like a lot of fun and something I can't wait to see. If you can't wait either, Disney has announced that special IMAX screenings of Age of Ultron will feature a sneak peek at Tomorrowland:

The middle of Spring actually means a new selection of summer blockbusters to look forward to, and with a ton of big-budget films slated to come out within the next few months and beyond, the summer of 2015 looks like one to remember.
From the new Mad Max (which is already on our end-of -year top ten list event though we haven’t yet seen it) to Avengers, Poltergeists, male strippers, talking teddy bears, and a reboot of the Jurassic Park franchise, this summer’s trips to the theaters will be jam-packed with sequels and new tales. From May 1st right through to the end of August, some of the movies on our list could wind up on year-end “best of” lists or even receive some Oscar talk by December.
Grab your calendar, because Wamg has a rundown of this summer’s films we’re most excited about, so check them out below!

I have moments from the last 17 years of doing this job that I regret, and in most cases, it's simply a matter of degrees. I try to approach most things from a place of no malice at all, but occasionally, even the best intentions land completely wrong. The way I typically realize I've made someone upset is when I get the e-mail or the phone call saying, "Oh, man, did you make me upset." I have enormous fondness for Brad Bird and Damon Lindelof, as well as the cast of "Tomorrowland," and when I wrote a piece in which I broke some of the first details of the story, I wasn't trying to ruin the film. I was just excited to finally have some sense of what they were up to. I definitely irked them, though, and since then, I've done my best to just wait until Disney put out...

Brad Bird’s Tomorrowland may exist as a mystery wrapped in an enigma at this time, but as we gear up to the sci-fi flick’s anticipated summer release, we’re beginning to learn more and more about what the director has cooked up and, in particular, the mystery behind the titular, utopian wonderland.
Case in point: this new-fangled international trailer. Given that Bird’s résumé The Incredibles and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, the filmmaker has displayed an astute eye for stunning visual and indeed practical effects, making Tomorrowland the perfect candidate for his next outing.

A talented group is behind "Tomorrowland," which Disney brings to theaters in May 2015 and finally has a trailer (below). Directed by Pixar whiz Brad Bird, who co-wrote the script with comic book writer Jeff Jensen and "Lost" co-creator Damon Lindelof. Disney is surely betting high on this time travel science fiction adventure, starring George Clooney (whose purpose here remains unclear in the trailer), Britt Robertson, Hugh Laurie, Kathryn Hahn, Tim McGraw (oh?) and Judy Greer. The top-secret film has been in the works since 2011, and much of it was filmed in and around Disney properties.

Yesterday, Disney unveiled the first pictures from Tomorrowland, featuring a grizzled George Clooney and a curious Britt Robertson. With the film getting its latest push at the New York Comic-Con, the first teaser trailer has now arrived. Filmmakers Brad Bird, Damon Lindelof and Jeff Jensen have clearly asked the marketing bods to keep to the “tease” part of the promo’s title, though we actually see more than anyone expected at this stage. If you’re still planning to go in without knowing too much, you may want to skip to the end.The first footage introduced Robertson’s Casey Newton, a troubled young woman who is getting out of a police lock up. Included amongst the personal items returned to her is a mysterious pin she doesn’t recognize – one that appears able to transport her to the titular world, a place where, we’re told, “nothing is impossible.
