At this point, it is almost tradition. A television network cancels a series, and fans of that series revolt. Back in the day, devotees would organise letter-writing campaigns, and inundate studios and network offices with missives pleading for their favourite show to be renewed. In this modern era, with the rise of social media, the reaction time is greatly reduced. Now, Twitter fills with bitter tears, and digital petitions are quickly circulated. Such is the case for Agent Carter – recently cancelled by ABC, and now the subject of a popular change.org petition, initiated by ‘Arnau S’ of Spain, asking Netflix to save the show.
Agent Carter has been a fantastic series. It was unlike anything else on television – including its stable-mate, Agents Of Shield – and it consistently delivered high quality storytelling, and a remarkable central performance from Hayley Atwell as the titular spy. For those of us, in particular,...

“The connection that really matters is the one that comes from the heart,” ABC Entertainment Group President Paul Lee told advertisers today at the company’s upfront presentation — building on broadcasters’ efforts this week to persuade buyers not to divert additional dollars to digital platforms. He said ABC is “the stronger brand” on metrics including “brand halo” and being perceived by viewers for being “most modern.” That “really is the secret to our momentum,” Lee…...

John Ridley’s anthology crime series American Crime will be taking a page from American Horror Story‘s playbook. During an upfronts press call today, ABC Entertainment Group President Paul Lee revealed that the second installment of American Crime will feature some of the actors from the first season playing different characters. “It’s a completely different scenario and a completely different crime, placed in a different part of America,” Lee said of Season 2. ABC's potential spinoff from "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." was there and vanished before anything actually really happened with it. In early April, the industry trades reported that Jeffrey Bell and Paul Zbyszewski were crafting a hypothetical spinoff based on the events in the "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." finale. In mid-April, it broke that Adrianne Palicki and Nick Blood would be the focal points in the spinoff. And last week, ABC decided it wasn't moving forward with the spinoff, which hadn't shot a pilot and hadn't revealed any characters beyond Palicki's Bobbi "Mockingbird" Morse and Blood's Lance Hunter. Spinoff, we hardly knew ye. In a Tuesday (May 12) conference call with reporters, ABC Entertainment President Paul Lee explained in very broad terms why no "S.H.I.E.L.D." spinoff is on ABC's 2015-16 schedule. "We absolutely love those characters on 'S.

Despite a report last week that ABC and Marvel had shelved plans for an Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff that was to focus on Adrianne Palicki’s Bobbi Morse/Mockingbird and Nick Blood’s Lance Hunter, there’s hope for the project yet.
During a conference call earlier today with Variety ahead of the network’s upfronts in New York, ABC Entertainment Group president Paul Lee said that he hopes the spinoff can be revisited down the road. “It certainly is a possibility of spinning them off,” Lee said, raving about the performance of both Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which is on the verge of wrapping up a drastically improved sophomore run, and midseason entry Agent Carter (both series have been renewed for additional seasons).
“We absolutely love those characters on S.H.I.E.L.D. We think S.H.I.E.L.D. hit its creative stride this year,” Lee added,...

At this moment, in the world of TV comedy, nobody is doing diversity better than ABC. "Fresh Off The Boat" is one of the best new comedies of the spring, maintaining its creative momentum from a strong pilot and generating a consistently solid audience in a time period that has caused ABC nothing but trouble in recent years. "Black-ish" was one of the fall's better new comedies and after the usual out-of-the-blocks maturation, it has become reliably smart and perceptive, doing a reasonably good job of holding onto that fickle "Modern Family" audience. I didn't have any use for "Cristela," but people I respect have been aggressively and demonstrably on-board for it since Day 1. ABC also has comedies celebrating families from The Heartland ("The Middle"), conservatives ("Last Man Standing"), secular Jews ("The Goldbergs"), intimacy-free gay marriage ("Modern Family") and wealthy snobs in the Hamptons ("Revenge"). As much as I've hated...

From Paul Lee to Mark Pedowitz to Nina Tassler to Robert Greenblatt, the Television Critics Association has been meeting with a lot of our old favorites over the past week. On Saturday (January 16) morning, though, it's time for some fresh blood. While Fox Television Group Chairmen and CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman are press savvy industry veterans, this will be their first time meeting with the TCA as the heads of the fairly-newly reorganized Fox infrastructure. Fox had a rough fall, but the spring is off to a good start on at least one significant front: "Empire" premiered huge and actually went Up in Week 2. So let's hear how Fox is going to continue the momentum... 10:02 a.m. Pacific. Get ready for some news! 10:03 a.m. After the obligatory clip reel set to "Bang Bang," Walden and Newman take the stage. Lee’s sit-down was preceded by a few housekeeping announcements. Repeat After Me, the new half-hour reality series inspired by a wildly popular shtick on The Ellen DeGeneres Show will premiere Feb. 17 at 8:30pm. The series will feature The Goldbergs star Wendi McLendon-Covey using a remote earpiece to instruct other famous faces in interactions with everyday folks. Marvel Studios, like its heroes, are accustomed to total victory. Yet the comic empire is facing the prospect of a rare performance disappointment in Agent Carter, ABC's Captain America spin-off starring Hayley Atwell. Despite strong-ish reviews, the period action drama debuted to semi-soft numbers last week, then dropped notably this week for its second episode—though there is still more DVR playback data to come. "We feel very optimistic about it," ABC entertainment president nm2712251 autoPaul Lee[/link] told reporters Wednesday when asked about the show's ratings drop.

After a executive session-free Tuesday -- we had set visits and digital panels -- it's time to get back to network business at the Television Critics Association. Wednesday (January 14) is ABC's day and we're starting off the day with ABC Entertainment President Paul Lee, who's in pretty good shape after a fall that saw big launches for "How To Get Away With Murder" and, to a less degree, "Black-ish." However, last spring's savior "Resurrection" has fallen off a cliff and I suspect we're about to get really self-righteous about the cancelation of "Selfie." So follow along with my live-blog! 9:30 a.m. Pt. CBS and The CW both gave us renewals at their TCA presentations. Will ABC do the same? 9:33 p.m. It's the anniversary of the cheeseburger. I'm not sure why that's relevant. But it's still a thing we've been told. 9:35 a.m. nm2712251 autoPaul Lee[/link] takes the stage.

It seems that ABC has found at least two successful new shows this season -- Black-ish and How to Get Away with Murder. The network has given them each a full season order, bringing their episode tally to approximately 22 episodes (ABC sometimes orders a few extra installments, depending on their needs).
Meanwhile, new shows Selfie and Manhattan Love Story look like flops and could be cancelled in the next couple weeks.

This is one time "The Flash" didn't move fast enough. ABC has become the first network this fall to extend full-season orders, confirming the extended runs for "How To Get Away With Murder" and "Black-ish." The "How To Get Away With Murder" pick-up comes with a bit of a caveat. The Shonda Rhimes-produced, Peter Nowalk-created drama will air only 15 episodes this season, part of the price of getting into business with a star as busy and in-demand as Viola Davis. The restricted full season was always part of the plan and was discussed by ABC Entertainment President Paul Lee and by the producers at the TCA press tour over the summer. As for "Black-ish," the Anthony Anderson comedy got a full back-nine order and will air 22 episodes this season. The "Black-ish" pick-up comes after the show's third episode drew 8.28 million viewers and a 2.9 rating among adults 18-49, up from the previous week.

Like Dorothy Gale coming to the conclusion that in order to find her hearts desire she need look no further than her own backyard, ABC has apparently discovered that the secret to Thursday 8 p.m. success was in the network's Thursday lineup all along. ABC premiered "Shonda Rhimes Presents: Thursday Primetime" on Thursday (September 25) night and the results presumably exceeded all expectations, as "Scandal" hit series highs, "How To Get Away With Murder" delivered powerhouse 10 p.m. numbers and, even in its 11th season, "Grey's Anatomy" proved it still has plenty of ratings juice. And as well as the three ABC dramas performed in preliminary Fast National numbers, all three dramas rose in Final Live+Same Day ratings. So for one week, at least, ABC has found a Thursday 8 p.m. hit and seemingly successfully launched a Wednesday 9:30 success in "Black-ish." And although "Forever" doesn't look like it's a blockbuster,...
