The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed 70 songs that qualify for the Best Original Song Oscar this afternoon. Films with more than one submission include “Beauty and the Beast,” “Call Me By Your Name,” “Cars 3,” “Elizabeth Blue” and “Pulimurugan.” It’s worth noting that “The Greatest Showman,” a musical featuring original songs from last year’s winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, only submitted one song, “This Is Me.”

Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
Bottle Rocket (Wes Anderson)
Wes Anderson’s feature debut, the slyly comedic Bottle Rocket, positions its heroes, three young wannabe criminals with an eye for small-scale robberies, as blind innocents, lost in the unfamiliar world of adulthood. As part of his 75-year plan, Dignan (Owen Wilson) forms a gang, consisting of himself, Anthony (Luke Wilson) who’s fresh out of a voluntary psychiatric hospital, and Bob (Robert Musgrave) who...

At the specialty box office, reviews can have a huge impact. This weekend, “The Book of Henry” (Focus Features), Colin Trevorrow’s return to indie films, was scorched by critics and summoned only a mediocre start in 579 theaters ($1.4 million). On the other hand, the best per-theater-average came from “Hare Krishna” (Abramorama), a documentary the New York Times, normally critical in launching any specialized release, chose not to include among its reviews. It managed over $21,000 in one Manhattan theater.
While IFC’s Northern Ireland political story “The Journey” also delivered a surprisingly strong New York opening, the most encouraging news of the weekend was the impressive expansion for “Beatriz at Dinner” (Roadside Attractions).

Fox Searchlight pushed Rachel Weisz melodrama “My Cousin Rachel” into national release this prime summer weekend, which boasts only one new wide studio opening. But the romantic mystery thriller failed to click with audiences.
On the other hand, Roadside Attractions kept Miguel Arteta’s Sundance hit “Beatriz at Dinner” in limited dates, where the edgy and compelling story of a mismatched dinner at a Southern California estate thrived in its first limited run. With a $30,000+ per theater average and a potential appeal beyond core art house audiences, this Salma Hayek starrer could make a significant impact in upcoming weeks.
Eleanor Coppola’s romance “Paris Can Wait” continues to lead wider releases, at a decent level for its theater break but significantly below such top 2016 crossover performers as “Love and Friendship” and “The Lobster” at this time.

Wonder Woman exceeded all expectations this weekend, delivering an impressive $100 million opening, the largest opening for a female-directed feature, vastly out-performing the previous record holder Fifty Shades of Grey, which debuted with $85.1 million back in 2015. Meanwhile, Fox's release of the DreamWorks Animation feature Captain Underpants came up a little short of Mojo's forecast while mildly outperforming the studio's modest expectations. Overall, the weekend dramatically outperformed the post-holiday weekend from 2016 by a massive 38% as the top twelve delivered a combined $176 million. At the top, Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot in the title role, went into the weekend boasting the best reviews out of the four films that have been released in the DC Extended Universe so far and the critical opinion definitely aided the film's awareness as the buzz only continued to grow throughout the week. Following an impressive $38.76 million Friday that buzz was no longer...

May kicked off the summer movie season, but June brings some studio tentpoles actually worth seeing (yes, we didn’t like that one everyone else did last month). Along with popcorn entertainment, there’s some of the finest independent films of the year, ranging from a long-delayed final feature from a late master to Sundance favorites and more. We should also note that, despite getting a release last year, IFC seems to be putting the Palme d’Or-winning I, Daniel Blake back in theaters this week, and we recommend seeking it out if you missed it.

The “dramedy” has become such a staple in independent cinema (and television) that it deserves its own category. It’s the type of film that isn’t consistently laugh out loud funny but the leads are typically naturally comical and played by well known, on the curve of their big, movie “break” sitcom stars. In that vein of film we get anything from the dreadful “The Hollars,” the Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig showcase “The Skeleton Twins” to the film that nearly defines this lo-fi, sad guy comedy genre, “Garden State.

Céline Dion has been on a fashionable roll as of late. With the help of one of Hollywood’s hottest stylists, Law Roach, the singer has an all new spring in her stilettoed step, wearing one perfectly on-trend look after the next, as well as a smattering of ensembles that pay homage to her storied career, like that time she wore a Titanic-themed Vetements sweatshirt, for example. And now she’s doubling-down on her stylish success, adding the title of fashion designer to her illustrious resume and teaming up with The Bugatti Group to launch her very own accessory line.

The Oscars are three weeks away, but the race continues to be unpredictable. While “La La Land” still has plenty of momentum, “Moonlight” is seen as the movie that represents the need to celebrate diverse storytelling at a troubling time for this country. But it’s not the only Oscar nominee with politics on its side: Enter “The Salesman,” which may have catapulted to first place in the foreign language Oscar race in the wake of President Trump’s disastrous travel ban.

The story of transgender internet star Gigi Gorgeous, “This Is Everything” chronicles the transformation of Gigi Lazzarato, a courageous young woman who began posting beauty and fashion videos on YouTube as a Toronto high school student when she was still known as Gregory Lazzarato. The film opens Friday for one-week runs at the IFC Center in New York and at Laemmle Music Hall in Los Angeles before premiering on YouTube Red on February 8.
Lazzarato’s rise to internet stardom came after years of encouraging her YouTube viewers to express themselves in the face of bullies and online harassment.

The Sundance Film Festival has long included documentaries that tackle hot button issues, but this year some of those films included virtual reality companion pieces in the New Frontier section. In addition to longstanding issues regarding technical, ethical and narrative complexities of telling stories with new technologies, these Vr additions raised serious questions about the capacity for the medium as an agent of change.
Environmental issues were at the forefront of this year’s festival, and two of the most prominent climate documentaries, “An Inconvenient Sequel” and “Chasing Coral,” presented Vr shorts as well. “An Inconvenient Sequel” shows how grave the climate change crisis has become since Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” debuted a decade ago. In the companion piece, “Melting Ice,” Gore and the film’s creator Danfung Dennis take us on a 360-degree tour of how rising temperatures have wreaked havoc on the climate of Greenland.

You sit in a pink-hued “neurocosmetology” lab, your feet dangling off the salon chair, tentacle-like electrodes hanging down above you. You’re here for an appointment to get your hair styled—and at the same time, increase the neuroplasticity of your brain.

Virtual reality has been on the cusp for decades, but many in the tech industry touted 2016 as the year Vr finally arrived. Multiple consumer headsets were released, billions of dollars were invested, and more media companies experimented with Vr content. One widely circulated industry projection predicted Vr and Ar (augmented reality) revenues of $150 billion by 2020.
Right now, however, that hype seems overblown. The technology is still clunky, many Vr systems remain prohibitively expensive, and headset sales have been less than impressive. One major obstacle to mainstream adoption of Vr is that there currently isn’t enough compelling content to make the high prices and frequently buggy technology worthwhile for most consumers. Creators, manufacturers, and audiences are all still trying to understand what, exactly, Vr is for.

During its development, production or eventual distribution, what specific challenge of communication did, or will your film, face? How did you deal with it, or how are you planning to deal with it? Communication is where a film lives and dies. It is essential for efficacy, for performance, and ultimately for translating a director’s vision to the screen. To me communication is less about the art of talking than it is about the art of listening. I hired an all-female crew on Band Aid, which was deliberate on many fronts, one of which was rooted in this very issue. At […]...

Just in case you've been living in the Upside Down, let me get you up to speed: Stranger Things Season 2 is officially happening. And as revealed by the show's unreasonably-attractive creators the Duffer Brothers, the new episodes will be set a year after the events of the first season, which would place the characters squarely in the latter days of 1984 (Season 1 took place between November and December of 1983). While that's not a whole lot later, it's still enough time for a massive number of pop-culture and consumer products to have been introduced in the interim, from film to TV to music to technology. It's hard to bet on the future, but of this I'm certain: Three decades from now, I'll still know every lyric to "We Are the World."
Released 30 years ago this week, the chart-topping charity single occupies at least as much space in my brain as my second-grade teacher (who made our class sing it repeatedly) and my first Sony Walkman (purchased around the time of its release).

"We Are the World" wasn't just a pop-culture event; it was a bona fide movement. Inspired by the success of Band Aid's 1984 charity release, Do They Know It's Christmas?, entertainer and activist Harry Belafonte came up with the idea to record an American track for famine relief in Africa.
Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian produced the song, which was penned by two of the biggest musicians at the height of their fame: Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie. More than 45 other...

Well, we just got over ice-bucket-challenging each other, so we'll see how this new thing takes off. Bob Geldof is attempting to launch a new charity trend amongst his celebrity friends. The challenge is pretty simple, actually: You sing Bono's line from the Band Aid 30 re-release of "Do They Know It's Christmas": "Well tonight we're reaching out and touching you." (You also donate money to Band Aid, naturally.) Geldof nominated The Affair (and yes, The Wire) actor Dominic West, Homeland's Damian Lewis, and Richard E. Grant (known variously from Doctor Who, Withnail & I and Luther). West, for his part,...

Lily Allen has always spoken her mind, but her latest musings may not go down too well with her fellow singers and musicians after she branded the Band Aid 30 project "a bit smug." "I got an email asking me to do it. It's difficult to explain why I didn't do it without sounding like a complete ****," said Allen in an interview with the Mail on Sunday's Event Magazine. There was a reason why you didn't see Lily Allen in the star-studded 30th anniversary reboot of the Band Aid charity single, "Do They Know It's Christmas?" The song featured all the British famouses, from Sam Smith to One Direction. Noticeably absent were Adele (who isn't responding to her manager) and Allen. The singer received an invitation, but turned it down. "It’s difficult to explain why I didn’t do it without sounding like a complete ****," she told the Daily Mail. "I prefer to do my charitable bit by donating actual money and not being lumped in with a bunch of people like that." She went on, "It’s like the success club and I'm not really in that club. I don't think I’m above it all — I'm way below it — but there’s something a bit smug about it." As for Sir Bob Geldof, she's chill with him,...

Never underestimate the power of music to eradicate the evils of the world, as it took only five minutes for Band Aid 30 to collect $1 million to beat Ebola.
Head honcho Bob Geldof told press that sales of the newly-recorded single “Do They Know It’s Christmas” have been huge from the get-go, given that One Direction, U2, Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran and Chris Martin were all a part of the project.
Geldof gushed to BBC Radio 4, "From what we've seen from iTunes it's gone bonkers. Within four or five minutes we had a million (dollars). That's the digital age.”
And as a co-writer on the original track, Bob made some subtle changes to the lyrics in order to make it fit the situation- "Where the only water flowing is the bitter sting of tears" was changed to, "Where a kiss of love can kill you and there's death in every tear.

Zoella, Alfie Deyes (aka Pointless Blog), and Joe Sugg (YouTube's ThatcherJoe) are already familiar names in the online video world, but they’re about to be known in the music industry, too. The UK-based YouTube celebrities recently participated in a recording of the Band Aid 30 song “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” The trio of vloggers was invited by Sir Bob Geldof to join a larger group of English and Irish musicians known collectively as the charity supergroup Band Aid 30. The name honors the 1984 Band Aid, a collection of around 40 musicians who came together three decades ago to record the original version of “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” Band Aid’s initial goal was to help combat poverty in Africa, so this year, Band Aid 30’s aims to sell the re-recorded single to raise money to combat the Ebola crisis. Zoella, Deyes, and Sugg joined some of the biggest...

A video for the single — which this time is aimed at raising money to tackle the Ebola crisis in Africa — premiered on Sunday’s episode of the U.K. version of The X Factor on ITV, after which iTunes started accepting pre-orders. A group of artists including Rita Ora, One Direction and Ed Sheeran have re-recorded "Do They Know It's Christmas?" to raise money for Ebola.
The original song, which was recorded by the charity super group "Band Aid" in 1984, was written by Bob Geldoff and Midge Ure to raise money for anti-poverty efforts in Ethiopia. The single, which sold over two million copies and raised more than $24 million, featured U2, Phil Collins, Sting, David Bowie and more. (Watch the original video here.) The song has since been redone in 1989, under Band Aid II, and in 2004 under "Band Aid 20." Neither reincarnation matched the original in both sound and success.

Bob Geldof shuffled onto the X Factor stage last night and apologised to the "X Factor nation" for something on the ITV singing competition that was "harrowing and not suited to an entertainment show".
It turned out that he was referring to footage of Ebola victims ahead of the Band Aid 30 premiere, rather than Saturday night's Big Band Week, but you probably understand our confusion.
Does anyone other than Simon Cowell actually enjoy Big Band Week? In the early days of X Factor, making the acts wheel out some corny Rat Pack covers actually felt worthwhile as it was the only sort of record that most of them would ever get to make. A Mother's Day record of sub-Bublé covers.

Jay James has been eliminated from The X Factor.
He faced the sing-off alongside Stevie Ritchie, after host Dermot O'Leary announced they were the bottom two acts of the week.
Both acts performed in a sing-off, with James singing 'Somewhere Only We Know' by Keane and Ritchie performing Queen's 'Somebody to Love'.
The duo's mentor Simon Cowell had to choose which of his acts to send home, picking Ritchie, while Louis Walsh came to the same decision.

Based on the public vote, James was then sent home.
Upon hearing the news, he said: "It's been absolutely incredibly, the people that I have met during this time have just been amazing."
