To hear about Gary Faulkner is to know the meaning of the phrase “stranger than fiction.” This is a Chatty Cathy of a Colorado handyman who was visited by God one afternoon while receiving dialysis and given a mission. Of everyone on planet Earth, Gary was the one personally selected by his Lord and Savior to capture Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan and bring him to the United States for “justice and stuff.” Not the Marines. Not mercenaries or Al-Qaeda power struggles. No, the man for the job was Gary Brooks Faulkner. He isn’t crazy—at least not clinically diagnosed despite others trying—or in it for the publicity. He’s merely a concerned American proud of his awesome country and willing to do what the Big Boys can’t.

Variety is reporting Russell Brand and Rainn Wilson have joined Nicolas Cage in the Larry Charles-directed (Borat, The Dictator) comedy Army Of One, as well as Denis O'Hare (Dallas Buyers Club), Ken Marino (Bad Milo), Paul Scheer (The League) and Wendi McLendon-Covey (Reno 911!). Taking a break from his latterday role as revolutionary political Jesus, Russell Brand has signed up for a Nicolas Cage comedy, joining the zen warlock for Army Of One. Larry Charles (Borat, Curb Your Enthusiasm) is directing, and has also been rounding out the rest of his cast with Rainn Wilson, Denis O’Hare, Ken Marino, Paul Scheer and Wendi McLendon-Covey.The film is adapted by Scott Rothman and Rajiv Joseph from a stranger-than-fiction GQ article by Chris Heath (perhaps strangely, given Brand's antipathy for one of that publication's recent sponsors). The story revolves around Colorado resident Gary Faulkner, who decided in 2010 that he was going to be the man to take down Osama Bin Laden. His plan was to track down and wipe out the most wanted man on the planet armed only with a sword he bought from a home shopping network, a pair of night-vision goggles and...

Ok, so it’s fair to say I’m not a sports guy. I hated playing sports in high school, I don’t watch sports on TV (well apart from the odd Superbowl on Channel 4 back when I was a teenager) and I certainly would never choose to watch sports over a movie. But what about sports movies? I’m a sucker for them! Of course it helped that I had a parent who loved the feel-good underdog stories that many a sports flick was essentially built around. Thanks to my mum I grew up watching sports movies such as Major League, Lucas, Field of Dreams, Hoosiers, The Mighty Ducks and many more…

"Borat" helmer Larry Charles is set to direct and Nicolas Cage is slated to star in the satirical comedy "Army of One" for TWC-Dimension, Endgame Entertainment and Conde Nast Entertainment.
The story is loosely based on a GQ magazine article about a Colorado construction worker/ex-con who attempted to sneak into Pakistan and Afghanistan multiple times. His goal? To find and kill Osama Bin Laden. He never succeeded though as the al-Qaeda leader was ultimately assassinated at the hands of U.S. Navy Seal Team 6 in May 2011.
Rajiv Joseph and Scott Rothman (Draft Day) penned the script, but Charles is expected to use the same semi-improvised techniques he used in "Bruno" and "The Dictator" which will allow Cage to deliver an unpredictable and unstable character performance.
Shooting is slated to begin at the end of March for a late 2015 release through TWC-Dimension.

Before you get too excited: no, Nicolas Cage won't be playing the infamous terrorist Osama Bin Laden in this movie - although that would admittedly be pretty amazing.
THR reports that Cage will star in a satirical comedy called Army of One for Borat director Larry Charles. And though this will be based on a true story, don't expect anything serious along the lines of American Sniper or Zero Dark Thirty.
Army of One is loosely based on Chris Heath's GQ magazine article recounting the real-life misadventures of Gary Faulkner, a Colorado construction worker who took it upon himself to find Bin Laden, including trying to sneak into Pakistan and Afghanistan numerous times.
Sounds a little like the Morgan Spurlock documentary Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden?, but hopefully Cage's...let's call it "unique" brand of acting will give this film a life of its own. Scott Rothman and Rajiv Joseph,...

Borat director Larry Charles has tapped Nicolas Cage to lead his latest satire, Army of One, which will see the actor play an average Joe who attempts to hunt down Osama Bin Laden on his lonesome.
Loosely inspired on real events, Charles’ latest draws from the story of one Gary Faulkner, a blue-collar construction worker who took it upon himself to assassinate who many considered to be one of the most dangerous men in the world at the time. Such a journey saw Faulkner attempt to sneak into Afghanistan and Pakistan on multiple occasions, armed with only a sword to stop the al-Qaeda leader in his tracks before his ultimate demise at the hand of the Us army in May of 2011.
On paper, it’s a bonkers premise that could just work thanks to the touch of Charles. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Army of One will retain the semi-improvised...

The hunt for Osama bin Laden was so significant that we’ve already had a few movies about missions to find and/or kill the al-Qaeda leader. Most famously, of course, is Zero Dark Thirty, which dramatizes the operation that resulted in bin Laden’s death. Before that was the comedic documentary Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden?, in which director Morgan Spurlock jokingly travels through Africa and the Middle East in search of the wanted terrorist. Spurlock wasn’t the only “regular guy” on the hunt, though, as we’ll see soon enough in the comedy Army of One. Described as a satire, the movie will also be based on a true story of the “Rocky Mountain Rambo,” Gary Faulkner, a Denver-based construction worker who in 2010 went to Pakistan armed with a pistol, a knife and a samurai sword to take out bin Laden all by himself. Who...

Nicolas Cage is set to star in Army of One, the bizarre true tale of Gary Faulkner’s mission to single-handedly hunt down Osama bin Laden in Pakistan. Borat‘s Larry Charles is directing the Condé Nast Entertainment and Endgame Entertainment production inspired by a 2010 GQ article about Faulker, the Colorado man who made headlines, and hit the late show circuit, for his quest to take down al Qaeda’s #1. While lacking the dramatic clout of the similarly-themed Moneyball, Draft Day nonetheless provides an easy viewing experience thanks to director Ivan Reitman's breezy pacing and star Kevin Costner's enduring appeal as a leading man.
Costner plays NFL manager Sonny Weaver, tasked with rebuilding his Cleveland Browns team on the all important draft day - a time when rival teams barter and jostle to secure the best new recruits. The coverage dominates the media and the stakes are high for all those involved, but why on earth should we give a hoot?

I missed Draft Day on the big screen but just caught up with it on Blu-ray courtesy of the folks at Lionsgate. I was less enthused than Michael. The title doesn’t lie. This film is all about the NFL draft and draft day to a mind-numbing degree. It’s a real ‘inside baseball’ look at the process but I suspect most folks who are not fans of the NFL will find their eyes just glazing over early on.

Review Ron Hogan 15 Apr 2014 - 06:35
A movie about the internal politics of American football? Ron reckons Draft Day reaches too far and falls a little short
When you think about an actor, there's usually something that comes to mind immediately. There's something that the actor embodies, physically or emotionally, that you immediately associate with that person. Tom Hanks is a nice guy. That's what he is. Christopher Walken is intense and off-kilter. Even when he's playing it straight, he's weird. Kevin Costner can probably be best described as casually charming. He's aged into a sort of nice dad sort of actor; he's got a world weariness that suggests he's been through the wringer, but he's learned from his mistakes and he's willing to pass along his wisdom, but he's not going to insist upon himself.
Given his history with athletics in movies, Kevin Costner is the perfect choice to...

In early 2010, Rajiv Joseph (above left) and Scott Rothman (right) had never before written a script together, nor had either ever had a screenplay produced. But what the friends, who both graduated with dramatic writing MFAs from Nyu’s Tisch School of the Arts, had done was watch a ton of football. It was fitting, then, that just as Joseph’s career as a writer was taking off thanks to the success of his 2009 play, Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, a random comment from a surprising NFL draft fan would inspire the two writers to dig in on the project that would eventually,...

Draft Day opens in the month prior to the actual 2014 NFL draft. So, Hollywood gets an “A” for timing the release just right. Fans of the NFL are primed for just this sort of film since the pre-season games of August still feel so impossibly far away after a long, cold winter.
Regrettably, this is an uneven film that will only satisfy the hard-core NFL fan. Draft Day was directed by Ivan Reitman who is an undeniable talent as a director from 1980. Not today. It was written by Scott Rothman in his writing debut and by Rajiv Joseph who is credited with writing only three individual television episodes. Draft Day could have used a much deeper bench on the writing staff. Rookies make rookie mistakes.

Judging from the massive television audiences that tune in for college and NFL football, you might think that football movies would be an easy sell at the American box office. They’re not — and making matters worse, fans who pay to see football in the theater often have to settle for fictional teams, like the Miami Sharks and the North Dallas Bulls, because the NFL doesn’t often play ball with Hollywood.
So give Draft Day credit. It not only got league permission — with sports all-star Kevin Costner playing the embattled general-manager of the downtrodden Cleveland Browns — but the NFL endorsed the film wholeheartedly,...

In Draft Day, on the day of the NFL Draft, general manager Sonny Weaver Jr. (Kevin Costner) has the opportunity to rebuild his team when he trades for the number one pick. He must quickly decide what he’s willing to sacrifice in pursuit of perfection as the lines between his personal and professional life become blurred on a life-changing day for a few hundred young men with dreams of playing in the NFL. Recently, Wamg sat down with Kevin Costner in a press conference where he spoke to members of the media about his new role in Draft Day, Field Of Dreams, and how affected he was by Rock Hudson in Giant. Check it out below!

Final Draft: Reitman’s By the Numbers Sports Drama
Director Ivan Reitman leaves behind the realm of rom-com for a masculine about-face with the football drama, Draft Day, which, as you can rightfully assume, takes place on the eponymous day, its clock kicking off thirteen hours before the grand finale. Screenwriters Scott Rothman and Rajiv Joseph takes deliberate pains in dumbing down the behind-the-scenes process that goes on, which will certainly help engage complete strangers to the realm, though this is hardly a realistic inside look at anything more than your conventional sports drama about a down-on-his-luck dude who manages to outsmart everyone despite dubious popular opinion.
The countdown to Draft Day has begun, and this year, Seattle holds the number one pick as well as the current top star, quarterback Bo Callahan (Josh Pence). However, the Seattle manager, Tom Michaels (Patrick St. Espirit) thinks he can oversell Callahan to a desperate team,...

The NFL Draft is so inherently exciting for sports fans that to release a “ticking clock” thriller about the day leading up to the event feels less like a good story idea than it does a way to generate excitement for the upcoming event, while cramming in as much team merchandise as the producers will allow. Draft Day, a new film from director Ivan Reitman, is only intermittently exciting and boasts few surprises, as well as a flat performance from Kevin Costner.
In a move that some sports movie fans may consider sacrilege, Costner has abandoned baseball for football. Here, he plays Sonny Weaver, Jr., an ambitious but hot-headed Cleveland Browns general manager trying to deal with the fallout of a potentially shoddy trade that he agreed to 12 hours before the NFL draft. He took Seattle’s first-round draft pick spot for the Browns’ first-round selections for the next three years.

Draft Day is a movie about football for people that don't know anything about football, the National Football League or the NFL Draft. The only inkling of realism might be found in the way potential draftees feel and worry up and until they hear their name called. Well, I guess you could also say that if this film offers any indication of how Cleveland Browns executives approach each year's draft it explains a lot about that franchise as well, but I think Cleveland sports has endured enough embarrassment already. Of course, once you consider this film is presented with the full support of the NFL you may as well chalk it up as a fantasy, because those guys aren't going to support anything that in any way would shed a negative light on themselves or any of their teams... though the Seahawks and Jaguars do come away looking like a bunch of doofuses.

Next up is Ivan Reitman’s Draft Day, which hopes to essentially be the next Moneyball, just with the NFL Draft as its focus. That film was a bit of an aberration, but this one has a bit in common with it, so perhaps the Academy is more open to sports movies than they have been in the past? Reitman has sports film icon Kevin Costner in the lead role, so that’s certainly a plus,...

The 2014 NFL Draft. The culmination, for most players, of a lifetime of playing football – hundreds of NFL hopefuls waiting to hear their names announced during one of the seven rounds of the draft.
The 2014 NFL Draft returns to primetime, with the first round taking place Thursday, May 8, followed by the second and third rounds on Friday, May 9. Rounds 4-7 will be held Saturday, May 10.
On Tuesday night, St. Louis Rams players, Robert Quinn, Rodger Saffold, Chase Reynolds, Johnny Hekker, Greg Zuerlein, and Mason Brodine, came out for the special advance screening of the new NFL Draft based film, Draft Day.
When asked what their favorite Sports films were, Quinn paused and said, “It’s a toss up… Remember The Titans and The Replacements,“ while Saffold said, “easy, Hoosiers.” Speaking of basketball, both picked the University of Connecticut Women’s basketball team to win, “with no problem.”

Ivan Reitman's early comedies leaned heavily on the idea of the scruffy underdogs who managed to retain their personal quirks within systems designed to break them down. Whether it was the rowdy campers and counselors of "Meatballs" or the shabby soldiers of "Stripes" or the Ghostbusters, Reitman's movies seemed to celebrate these characters and the entire idea of rebellion. After those films, though, he became an A-list director whose movies seemed to lean on high concepts that were much less interesting. "Legal Eagles" and "Twins" were both dispiriting efforts that leaned heavily on movie star charisma in place of actual scripts and characters. In general, any film Reitman made with Arnold Schwarzenegger felt like a total refutation of the things that Reitman did well. The one bright spot in his post-"Ghostbusters" filmography was "Dave," which started as a sharp and funny script, and if "Draft Day" feels like any of his prior films,...

These clips don’t tell us if Sonny decides to keep or drop Bo, but the one with Frank Langella does give us a taste for Ivan Reitman’s directing. The scene has a trippy, moving split-screen that frequently overlaps Langella onto Costner’s side, adding some energy to this tale of a football manager who is making plays in an attempt to land the number one draft pick. So what does "Draft Day" have that we’re not seeing? The script is by Rajiv Joseph and Scott Rothman, which was number one on the 2012 The Black List. The story attracted Kevin Costner and a great ensemble cast that includes Frank Langella (who is in the middle of a tremendous run in “King Lear” at the Brooklyn Academy of Music), Denis Leary, Jennifer Garner, Sam Elliott, Terry Crews, Ellen Burstyn and more. What does this team see in the project that we don’t?...

In Draft Day, Kevin Costner is the G.M. of the Cleveland Browns, a franchise that has never won a Super Bowl in a town that hasn’t won a major sports championship since 1964. He’s got a passionate fan base that is counting on him to turn around the team’s fortunes, a billionaire owner (Frank Langella) who wants to make a big splash at the NFL Draft, and an arrogant coach (Denis Leary) who thinks he can “shop for the groceries” better than his nominal boss. But Costner’s Sonny Weaver is a Moneyball type — “You see things other people don’t see,...

Few upcoming sports dramas have garnered as much early buzz as Ivan Reitman’s football-centric Draft Day, which boasts a Black List-topping script and an all-star cast. The film, set for release next April, revolves around the general manager of a football team who does everything he can to snag the number one draft pick for his team. Now, a first trailer has hit, and you can check it out below.
Kevin Costner stars as Sonny Weaver, Jr., the Gm for the Cleveland Browns. Charged with bringing the Browns out of a serious slump by picking the best players at NFL drafts, Sonny finds that his career, like those of the young athletes clamoring for a shot at the big leagues, is on the line. As he blurs the lines between his personal and professional lives, Sonny must question how far he’s really willing to go in pursuit of the perfect line-up.

If there's a running theme in Kevin Costner's films for 2014, it's recruitment. In "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit," the title says it all, with Costner enlisting Chris Pine for some covert action, then in "3 Days To Kill" the actor himself is hired to kick some ass, Euro style. And then later on the spring, Costner will head downfield for "Draft Day" where the thrill of the titular event will be turned cinematic. The film finds Costner playing Cleveland Browns general manager Sonny Weaver, who makes some bold moves that piss of his Mom and Denis Leary as he tries to build a great football team. We're not sure how exciting it will be to watch what essentially seems like two hours of people talking on phones about trades, but the script by Rajiv Joseph and Scott Rothman wound up on top of the 2012 Black List so perhaps there's more than meets eye here.

Who knew that the NFL's draft day was so high pressure? (Perhaps that explains our lackluster fantasy football scores.)
In Ivan Reitman's "Draft Day," Kevin Costner must trade his way up to the hottest NFL draft pick for the struggling Cleveland Browns. As General Manager Sonny Weaver Jr., he's accosted on all sides by the owner (Frank Langella), the coach (Denis Leary), the players, and even his own Twitter-happy mom (Ellen Burstyn). Luckily, he's got someone on his side, and that's a quick-witted Jennifer Garner.
It looks like Garner's character is more than just a helpful colleague, though. Is it possible that love is in the cards for Sonny, along with one of those giant fancy Super Bowl rings that Leary's character keeps waving in everyone's face?
The script for "Draft Day," by Rajiv Joseph and Scott Rothman, was the number one unproduced screenplay in 2012, as determined by the insider-y Black List.

A few months ago there was a brief time-out during which original studio Paramount suddenly dropped sports movie Draft Day. It's been a long while since director Ivan Reitman made a film memorable for something other than having been directed by Ivan Reitman. I couldn.t tell you what No Strings Attached was about to save my life. Sad as that sounds, his upcoming football drama Draft Day looks equally non-distinct, at least according to the debut trailer, which comes to us via Yahoo!. And there are entirely too many talented actors in this movie for it to look so goddamn generic. I.m pretty sure screenwriters Scott Rothman and Rajiv Joseph (Nurse Jackie) were repeatedly watching Jerry Maguire and Any Given Sunday on two different TVs at the same time while writing the screenplay. I absolutely expected this film to be a comedy with dramatic elements; instead, it.s a full-on drama with the music and the aspirations to become an emotional adventure. I.m all for it actually...
