Horror movies like Deep Fear take place underground, and they are often the most effective as far as compelling scares go. They evoke a fear that everyone can understand. Trap someone in a confined, dark space below ground, then have them be pursued by someone (or something) — it’s a simple but winning formula.
Screambox‘s latest release Deep Fear, as well as the nine other movies below, reinforce feelings of claustrophobia and remind you of what possible evils could be hiding below the surface. As Above, So Below, The Descent, C.H.U.D., Creep and The Midnight Meat Train are all familiar examples of this subgenre, but this list focuses on underseen movies set underground.

Horror has a tendency to depict older folks as weak and vulnerable; they’re easy prey for a fast monster or a wanton murderer. On the genre’s flipside are those occasional movies where seniors are far less susceptible. Their advanced age gives them the illusion of kindness and fragility, but deep down they harbor resentment and rage. They seek to hurt everyone, specifically those unlike them, or those who remind them of their lost youth and opportunities. Netflix’s Old People belongs to the second category, though one certain factor sets the German movie apart from other elder horrors. This isn’t an isolated incident; there’s an entire legion of gray-haired killers on the loose.
From wicked adoptions to antisocial teens to demon spawn, the horror genre has always viewed youth as a potential threat. Yet the latest horror movie from Urban Explorer director Andy Fetscher shows children...

Fans of weird and eerie German movies, rejoice! Your Halloween spooky viewing has arrived, and it's carved out a steady spot in Netflix's Top 10 trending watches. "Old People" is German-Romanian filmmaker Andy Fetscher's horror thriller wherein the old eat the young, bludgeon them, and sometimes vomit on them. It's the sort of concept that M. Night Shyamalan would have a field day with, but Fetscher adds more chaos and a cadre of monsters at the door.
A title card at the opening reads:
In times of yore, an avenging spirit was thought to inhabit old people. A dark power that took possession of the frailest members of the clan and drive them into a seemingly blind rage.
That's right – this is functionally an elderly rage-zombie movie. What a time to be alive.
At its core, the story focuses on generational disconnect by observing lonely elders, excluded from local festivities,...

Urban exploration is risky business when four international students hire a local guide to lead them through the ruins of old Berlin. In what they find in the tunnels is more treacherous than this city’s sordid past. In the real hobby, many adventurers can find plenty of rustic decay to archive, figurative history to marvel at and graffitti to indicate where others have dare treaded.
In the movie that takes a simple title of Urbex: Urban Explorer, there might be some confusion in what can be examined. To look around inside any old abandoned building can be exciting. But there is more to this hobby than just going underground. Rank tunnels are often a source for many movies on a tight budget and this tale is one that gets detailed. Director: Andy Fetscher. Review: Adam Wing. Picture the scene: A young girl, terrified and confused, boards a busy subway train in an attempt to escape the crazed madman chasing her. He too gets on the train and continues to taunt her in front of the other passengers. By pretending to be a ticket collector, he attempts to drag her from the train. The girl - by now battered and bruised - screams out to one of the other passengers, “He’s a killer, a f*cking lunatic. Don’t you understand?” As the bloody psychopath pulls her from the train, the passenger - without an ounce of humour - replies, “Sorry, but you need a ticket.” The moral of this story, I hear you ask? Don’t take the train next time you’re in Germany. Gritty horror Urban Explorers is available in the UK for the first time this month.

When will people ever learn that heading off into creepy, abandoned locations unprepared for the worst never ends in anything but unmitigated terror? Thankfully for us, the answer would appear to be “never”!
Now you, too, can get stuck into some hi-def underground horror with a free copy of Urban Explorers (formerly Urban Explorer; review here) on Blu-ray courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment.

“Urban Explorers” offers a horrific twist on the apparently popular new pastime of urban exploration (also referred to by the particularly hip as Urbex or Ue), in which practitioners make their way through abandoned buildings, factories, train tunnels and the like. Directed by the German-Romanian Andy Fetscher, the film unsurprisingly sees a bunch of young thrill seekers getting more than they bargained for during a trek beneath Berlin, resulting in murder and madness a-plenty. The film, out now on region 2 DVD and Blu Ray via Anchor Bay, has gone down well at a variety of genre festivals, having won Best Picture, Best Editing and Best Make-Up, plus Best Actor for Klaus Stiglmeier, at La Screamfest in 2011. The plot kicks off with couple Denis (Nick Eversman, “Hellraiser: Revelations”) and Lucia (Nathalie Kelley), joining Marie (Catherine de Lean) and Juna (Brenda Koo) for a tour of underground Berlin, which will take them...

A few years ago I read a novel called Creepers by David Morrell. It tells the tale of urban explorers and paints a brilliant world of danger and excitement. It would make a brilliant film should someone acquire the rights and bring it to the screen.
And so Urban Explorers offered that promise. The film’s early talk of hidden nazi bunkers and Hitler’s secret spaceship only serves to tantalise further. So it’s something of a disappointment when the film abandons the exploration and turns into a far more conventional stalk and slash type event after about thirty minutes. Think Wolf Creek underground and you get a pretty firm idea of what’s on offer. Except I liked Wolf Creek.

Do you like watching stupid people die? Not the cheeriest introduction, maybe, but it's hard to see what else anyone could get out of Andy Fetscher's Urban Explorer. Four young people go creeping through the tunnels under Berlin, only someone's waiting down there who's a little too happy to see them. Fetscher's film is technically sound, and when the gore starts in earnest it's skilfully done but the director does practically nothing to dispel the idea we're just marking time until these kids start begging for their lives. It's not merely the production-line approach of modern-day stalk and slash productions like something bankrolled by Platinum Dunes. There's an ugly, cynical streak to Urban Explorer that's not so much misanthropic as downright lazy, with great swathes...

I should caveat this review by saying that there was a bit of a screw up with the print shown during FrightFest; there was a total lack of subtitles. This may not sound like a major problem as the majority of the cast are English speaking, but there’s a particularly major character that speaks entirely in German. By the sound of the director’s comments after the screening, much of this character’s motivation and humour would have been missed as a result.
That said, Urban Explorer still wasn’t a film I enjoyed.

The Fantasia Film Festival is by far my favourite film festival in the world and I’ve been impatiently awaiting some news of what films they’ll be screening this year. Considered the world’s largest genre film festival and running over three weeks long, the event is celebrating it’s 15th edition this year and the lineup is already pretty incredible. In the past I’ve seen some of my favourite films premiere at the fest and last year I wrote up a list of the best films ever screened at the fest which you can read here. This year Kevin Smith’s Red State opens the festival and directors Robin Hardy (The Wicker Man) and Richard Stanley (Hardware, Dust Devil) will be in the house to discuss the occult on film. The full lineup which includes 130-feature titles will be announced on July 7. For now here is the...

Director Andy Fetscher asks an interesting question with Urban Explorer. What if evil isn't out there, somewhere, off in some foreign place. What if evil is right here, hiding away in the places we're so familiar with that we've simply forgotten they're there.Anxious to explore the mysterious hidden world under metropolitan Berlin, an international group of four urban explorers hires a local guide, Kris, who leads them into the maze of escape tunnels and subterranean fortifications under the city. When their guide has a bad fall, two of the girls in the group frantically set off to seek help while Denis, the young American, stays behind. Armin, a former East German border guard suddenly appears from nowhere. Out of sheer desperation, Denis allows Armin to...

There are just a few days left in Indie Horror Month, and today we bring word of an upcoming independent German production entitled Urban Explorer from director Andy Fetscher via Papermoon Films and The Little Film Company.
Urban Explorer was written by Martin Thau and stars Nathalie Kelley, Nick Eversman, Klaus Stiglmeier, and Max Riemelt.
Synopsis:
Anxious to explore the subterranean underbelly of Berlin, a group of foreign urban explorers meet for the first time and follow their local guide into an eerie maze of escape tunnels and underground fortifications in search of the walled up "Fahrerbunker" because of its forbidden Nazi graffiti.
When their guide falls, breaking his leg, two of the girls in the group frantically set off to seek help while Denis (Eversman), a young American honeymooner, and Lucia (Kelley), his breathtaking Latina wife, stay behind. It is then they meet Armin (Stiglmeier), an affable "guardian" of the underworld,...

Armin, a former East German border guard suddenly appears from nowhere. Although the film sounds like yet another tired excursion into the wonderfully oversaturated world of “corridor horror”, the trailer for director Andy Fetscher’s “Urban Explorer” actually looks rather cool. Trying to ascertain what, precisely, is going on during this brief but intense little clip is difficult, but there’s enough interesting elements to make yours truly stand up and pay attention. Then again, who in their right mind doesn’t like watching people being terrorized while they’re trekking through endless tunnels located beneath the earth’s surface? As someone who once fancied the idea of exploring abandoned places, the premise alone is worthy of serious investigation. A synopsis, you ask? Why sure: Anxious to explore the mysterious hidden world under metropolitan Berlin, an international group of four urban explorers hires a local guide, Kris, who leads them into the maze of escape tunnels and subterranean fortifications under the city.

German writer-director Andy Fetscher is digging deep beneath the streets of Berlin to find terror. Making its 2010 American Film Market debut (yes, it's that time of year again) is the filmmaker's Urban Explorer . The story focuses on four "urban explorers" who suddenly realize they have made a big mistake when a brutal border guard suddenly appears from nowhere. Sounds like a mix of Creep , Stag Night and maybe The Descent .
