Although the aliens are invisible and the human survivors run around with a weapon that looks like it is leftover from Ghostbusters, The Darkest Hour keeps the audience entertained. The movie manages to craft some tension, but is easily forgettable once the final credits roll. Produced by Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) and directed by Chris Gorak, the film features a screenplay by Jon Spaihts (who also wrote the story with Leslie Bohem and M.T. Ahern). It stars Emile Hirsch (Speed Racer), Olivia Thirlby, Max Minghella (The Social Network), Rachael Taylor (Transformers), Joel Kinnaman (The Killing), and Veronika Ozerova. The film opens with Americans Ben (Minghella) and Sean (Hirsch) arriving in Moscow with dreams of...

Summit Entertainment has provided the group of visitors an exclusive look at concept art of the locations from the film. The Timur Bekmambetov-produced alien invasion movie titled The Darkest Hour has been described as a 28 Days Later-type thriller following a group of American tourists visiting Moscow Russia when an alien invasion occurs. The film stars Emile Hirsch (Speed Racer, Into the Wild), Olivia Thirlby (Juno, The Wackness), and Max Minghella (Bee Season, How to Lose Friends & Alienate People, Agora, The Social Network). Summit Entertainment will distribute The Darkest Hour in theatres later this year (December 23rd). This is a film that, as part of a group, seems to be selling xenophobia to theatre goers. Gone are the days of a friendly E.T.: The Extraterrestrial (1983). Instead, film producers are more interested in creating menacing alien invaders e.g. Skyline, Battle: Los Angeles. Apparently fear sells better than friendliness, as ticket sales tell us.
Generalizations aside, the first trailer for The Darkest Hour deals with ball lightning and the aforementioned alien invaders. These other worldly beings are invisible, except when dismantling atoms via lightning strike. Have a look at the sci-fi thrills inside and remember to greet any real aliens with a gun, rather than an open hand.

The Darkest Hour is Summit's 3D alien attack thriller that started shooting in Moscow earlier this summer. The film's title came true in an unlikely manner, however, and production was shut down due to overwhelming smog from nearby forest fires. Now the production is back on track, so Emile Hirsch and Olivia Thirlby can get back to work. That's right -- Hirsch and Thirlby, a fairly unlikely duo for a film about " five young Americans who find themselves stranded in Moscow, fighting to survive in the wake of a devastating alien attack." Also in the film are Max Minghella and Russian actors Gosha Kutsenko, Dato Bakhtadze, Nikolai Yefremov and Arthur Smolyaninov. Timur Bekmambetov is producing and Chris Gorak directs.[THR] Previously: Gorak and Josh Zetumer revised the original script penned by M.T. Ahern and Leslie Bohem with revisions by Jon Spaihts. Max Minghella is a young actor best know from titles like Agora and The Social Network, and today we’re here to add his name to an upcoming Chris Gorak’s alien invasion movie The Darkest Hour.
Few weeks ago we wrote about this interesting project, so we’re sure you all agree that Minghella, Olivia Thirlby and Emile Hirsch make quite a good team for this kind of story, right?
The story involves a group of young Americans trying to survive an alien invasion in Russia.
At this moment we know that Emile Hirsch will play “a young American tourist,” while Olivia Thirlby will portray “a trust fund girl” and, of course they will team up with others and try to survive the attack of the invaders.
We have no details about Minghella’s role, but we guess that he’ll also be the part of this anti-alien team.
