When her overbearing mother dies, young Melanie (Amy Crowdis) is understandably torn by grief. To cope with her loss, she does what any teenager would do – craft a life-size doll to fill the void. Not only does her doll keep her company, but she also communicates with her. Yeah, Melanie is a little bit off, but she’s not harming anyone right? Things get a little better for Melanie when Dukken (Robin Lord Taylor), a poor man’s mishmash of Pete Wetnz and Billy Joe Armstrong, stumbles in to her life when he asks her to help him find a book on Nietzsche in their local library. The pair begin to forge a relationship based on their obsession with the macabre and just how unique and on the fringe of society they are,...

Lucio Fulci, Frankenhooker and more in our round up of new horror Blu-rays and DVDs...
So, what’s your personal idea of hell? For this writer, it would almost certainly involve being chained down in the audience of an eternal live filming of Loose Women as Donald Trump waves a slice of tiger bread, forever just out of reach. Yours is likely to be similar, though it would have to be pretty grim indeed to come anywhere near Lucio Fulci’s 1981 career-best infernal vision and perhaps the definitive (obviously other than Little Nicky) cinematic depiction of eternal damnation, The Beyond.

Director/writer: A.D. Calvo. Cast: Amy Crowdis, Robin Taylor, Josh Caras, Geneva Carr, and David Pirrie. This reviewer is a big fan of A.D. Calvo's previous film endeavor, The Other Side of the Tracks (aka The Haunting of Amelia). However, his latest production, The Melancholy Fantastic, is such a small film that tone and pacing are almost forgotten in the first two acts. Calvo offers another curious open ending, but The Melancholy Fantastic is more depression than extraordinaire. In the end, this critic was left with the question: what is missing? And, this review will offer a few answers. The film focuses centrally on Melanie played by Amy Crowdis (Breadcrumbs). Her mother recently passed away after a suicide attempt. Now, Melanie is alone in her house. Her schizophrenic thoughts keep her company while inciting her to murder. Then, Dukken (Robin Taylor) enters the picture. Will he turn her away...

There seems to be no shortage of modern day fairy tales turned to horror these days. With all the talk about Hansel and Gretel turning to action heroes and Little Red Riding Hood wanting to lose her virginity, it's no surprise really to find Bread Crumbs waiting patiently for me in my pile to review. I've said a few times now that Hansel and Gretel is one of the all time creepiest fairy tales, but Mike Nichol's Bread Crumbs seems to take the story into very unfamiliar territory. There's nothing wrong with change of course, but Bread Crumbs ends up being less like a spin on Hansel and Gretel and more of a lesson on how not to update a fairy tale--and unfortunately there is something very wrong with that.

Plenty of passionate filmmakers decide to give it a go in the horror genre. While some of them have the drive, the ambition, the talent, a lot of them fail to create a distinctive film in a genre that has seen it all before and will see it again a million times more. So when a director and writer like A.D. Calvo comes along, we here at Big Daddy Horror Reviews take notice. What sets him apart from so many others that have tried so hard at creating something original is his ability to create narratives that seamlessly blend elements of horror, psychology, drama, romance, fantasy, even a bit of nostalgia and whimsy. He did solid work in The Other Side of the Tracks (now titled The Haunting of Amelia) starring Brendan Fehr and Chad Lindberg. Now he is following that up with The Melancholy Fantastic starring Amy Crowdis, Robin Lord Taylor,...

We've a new trailer embedded below for evil doll film The Melancholy Fantastic just for you. This one has a definite May-esque charm to it and features one downright creepy doll.
Described as a 'psychological thriller', The Melancholy Fantastic revolves around a delusional young girl, Melanie Crow, who's trying to recover from the harsh blow of her mother's recent suicide. Her best friend is a life-size doll and reports are that it just might talk. Melanie strikes up a new relationship with a young gothic fellow - who likely is going to make the mistake of misinterpreting her growing psychosis and insanity for normal old girlish quirkiness. His bad!
The Melancholy Fantastic is set during the Christmas season and is loosely inspired by several different novels. The strongest inspiratioin is from The Sickness Unto Death by Søren Kierkegaard, though there are also reportedly references to Parable of the Madman by...

A huge film favorite around the Dread Central offices is Lucky McKee's debut feature, May, which pretty much played as a national friggin' anthem for the misunderstood soul. A.D. Calvo's latest feature, The Melancholy Fantastic, looks to echo that film and up the ante in terms of freaky! Dig it!
The film stars Amy Crowdis, Robin Lord Taylor, Josh Caras, Geneva Carr, David Pirrie, and Shirley Knight and is said to be "an alternative Christmas story with a shockingly happy ending".

Here’s a tip of the hat to all you eccentric kids out there — you can talk to that life-sized doll sitting in the corner of your room, but when the doll starts whispering sweet nothings back to you, it’s time to get the hell out of the house. Or at least, burn the damn thing. That’s not what our heroine in A.D. Calvo’s “The Melancholy Fantastic” does, which is good for us, because the result is this moody, atmospheric trailer. Calvo says he’s submitted the film to Sundance, and I presume other festivals as well. So if you’re one of those festival going types, keep an eye out for it. Suffering from her mother’s recent suicide, a delusional young girl falls for an alluring Goth, against the objections of a life-size talking muslin doll. The Melancholy Fantastic is a psychological thriller set during the holidays.

We've been following Calvo for some time now. We first broke news on his planned flick Snow White which went wide, but that was shelved for the time being and he shot another part of his "gothic mental illness trilogy" called The Melancholy Fantastic which I saw the trailer for over a month ago, and they finally decided to drop it today and we got the first heads up. I had some input on the trailer, so naturally I'm biased, but I like the whole idea from beginning to end and can't wait to see it.

Stunning stills for the first in A.D. Calvo's gothic mental illness trilogy The Melancholy Fantastic
Back when we first reported on Calvo's planned Lynchian Snow White adaptation, the news went far and wide, ending up on the AP wire. In the meantime, funding came through for The Melancholy Fantastic, the first in a trilogy of films "featuring a strong female lead character suffering from mental illness", which started shooting this past weekend, and now, we have the first incredible looking stills to show you. What's it about? Something wholly fantastic. Read on.
Against the objections of a life-size paper doll, a delusional young woman falls for a Goth in this unconventional holiday story. The Melancholy Fantastic weaves elements of classical existentialism into a disturbing psychological holiday thriller.

When it's dark enough, you can see the stars.
QuietEarth reports that there's a macabre and awesome new version of the Snow White fairytale being made by director A.D. Calvo (The Other Side of the Tracks). The film will star newcomer Amy Crowdis and begin filming october 2009. Calvo says, "We believe the film will resonate strongly with both David Lynch and Nine Inch Nail fans."
After wavering on her end of a suicide pact, Snow White, a young woman who appears to be the fairest of them all, finds herself trapped in a fantastical nightmare world. As she journeys through seven portals in search of an escape, she comes to realize the cause of her tremendous sense of guilt, the secret she's been hiding, and the reason behind her travels.

From A.D. Calvo (The Other Side of the Tracks) comes a project which falls in the line with the growing trend of macabre fairytale adaptations to screen (eg. Malice in Wonderland). While I've been in touch with the director, we still know little about the project other then that it's in development, they're still raising funds, and it will star newcomer Amy Crowdis. Calvo hopes to begin production this October and says: "We believe the film will resonate strongly with both David Lynch and Nine Inch Nail fans." I'm hoping for a visually stunning tale of psychadelic madness.
