When college friends Courtney L. Branch and Noel Braham launched the Micheaux Film Festival five years ago, the event, designed to put a spotlight on diverse and underrepresented creators, was limited to just a one-day affair.
“Really, [we] just wanted to do it as a proof of concept to see if this is something that people wanted, that they needed,” Branch told The Hollywood Reporter. “And they have responded in droves.”
The now-weeklong festival, which wraps on Sunday, is a testament to how much it has grown and the variety of the projects involved. Key premieres included Scrap, a film starring Vivian Kerr and Anthony Rapp about a single houseless mother; The Good Egg about a woman grappling with infertility who gets entangled with a con artist; and the documentary Bad Things Happen in Philadelphia about the effects of gun violence in the city.

The reason why so many people struggle to get the hang of roller skating is that it’s counter intuitive. All the things which one might normally do to try and steady oneself, like leaning forwards, aligning one’s feet or throwing out one’s arms, make it easier to fall. The only way to find one’s balance is to relax and let go. Beth (played by writer/director Vivian Kerr) glides across the rink like a swan on a lake. Her brother Ben (Anthony Rapp) flounders, quickly losing his balance. He doesn’t get out of there without serious bruising – but in life, it’s the other way around.
When we first meet Beth, she’s sleeping in her car. It’s too nice a vehicle for her to have been poor for long, and she tidies herself up with make-up from an expensive box in a shade...

Los Angeles, CA – March 23, 2023 – “LA Medical” tells the story of Dr. Porter, who loves her patients and finds such meaning in her work. As she loses a long, arduous battle in her own life, it’s the patients and their battles that help her navigate her own. Nicole Peplinski wrote, produced, and starred in the film alongside actor Michael Sun Lee. “LA Medical” has finished production and is now headed to film festivals.
Nicole Peplinski says, “I created this film to use art as the medium for analysis of the human experience. As our heroine navigates helping her patients, she juggles endometriosis and infertility, theories on what makes you feel unlovable, career success, and the painful reality of success having enemies and still trying to embrace all the opportunities in front of her.
Both socially and personally, it felt like the right time to artistically create work that would propel conversations regarding these social issues.

Can a person be scared to death? Are haunted videos real? These are questions that the "Castle" episode, "Scared to Death" asks. Even the photos from this one are creepy.
Before you get too worried, we can assure you that this is not one of those serious, dark episodes of "Castle." It's instead a silly, dark episode of the show! The presence of Wes Craven as a guest star helps to prove that.
The case begins with the death of a young woman. She appears to have been literally scared to death.
Of course, Castle (Nathan Fillion) can't ignore something like death by fear. Is this book responsible?
The evidence actually points more in the direction of a "haunted" DVD that the victim watched three days before her death. Castle watches this video as well. Does that mean he is next?
In the meantime, the victim's roommate (guest star Vivian Kerr) comes home.

For actor Vivian Kerr, one casting notice on Back Stage's Facebook page set in motion a series of events that included booking a role, being invited to join a theater company, and earning a 2011 Ovation Award nomination. In January, Kerr saw a casting notice for Theatre Banshee's production of Arthur Miller's "The Crucible" on the Back Stage Facebook page. She was immediately interested because she had always loved the play and had been hearing great things about the theater company. So she emailed her submission and got called in for a general audition, at which she performed a monologue. When it came time to fill out the audition form, she was interested only in the role of Mary Warren, but she didn't want to put that on the form. She says, "It's funny because I think Abigail is the part that most girls are drawn to, but I always just.

We Are With The Band premiered this past week on KoldCast TV. Reminiscent of the indie version of WB’s Echo Park rock drama Rockville, CA, it centers on Elle and Marci, two “professional hipsters” (Heleya de Barros and Vivian Kerr) trying to navigate the East La “scene” while modeling their lives off a 24/7 American Apparel ad. [We Are With the Band] ITV Fest, the Independent Television Festival is heading into its fifth year already and has started its spring fundraising push with a kickoff party and silent auction in Los Angeles slated for April 21. Added bonus: the first 50 people to register will get ITVFest gift bags. [ITVFest Fundraiser] Revision3’s new series Unboxing Porn sounds dirtier than it is. But to some technophiles there is no greater turn-on than some high-definition tech gear de-robing, otherwise known as unboxing. And what better to launch a new geek web series around than some gratuitous unboxing of Apple’s...

Due out in early April, We Are With the Band follows internet blogger Elle and recently unemployed Marci as they dive bottle-first into the Silverlake hipster scene. The series was conceived and produced by Vivian Kerr and Heleya de Barros as an outlet for their frustration at not finding quality roles for women in Hollywood. "I know Heleya's strengths as an actor and I thought I could write something that would showcase her," said Kerr. "I was watching a lot of Peep Show, a British comedy about two male best friends, and I was wondering what a female equivalent of that show would be like. La has such rich fodder for parody and hipsters are such an easy target. It sort of wrote itself." Barros continued, "Wawtb is about finding yourself, finding balance in your life. It's about being done with college, but still having no direction. Having dreams but...
