Zombies seem to be a popular focus in the horror genre at the moment, with TV shows The Walking Dead bringing a new rejuvenated interest in the horror sub-genre. The success of the series seeming to be infectious, with a variety of zombie themed projects coming out every week, although most shuffle along without offering anything new to the genre.
Amongst the horde however you occasionally come across a breakout horror such as Shaun of the Dead (2004). A film which offers something different to the normal formula as both a homage and parody of the sub-genre. Where Shaun (Simon Pegg) pays homage to the influence of George Romero’s “of the Dead” series, Shed of the Dead uses Shaun as a familiar template and follows a similar infected vein with the balance of horror and comedy. Throw in amazing cast of horror icons, role play fantasy and a more sophomoric humour,...

Drew Cullingham, writer/director of the Western vampire flick Umbrage: The First Vampire, returns with The Devil’s Bargain, a apocalyptic tale set in 1974 and shot on a shoestring budget in twenty-four hours over four days, using an experimental ‘pinhole’ technique and distributed outside the UK’s censorship regime via streaming service Distrify.
With earth about to be obliterated by a massive asteroid, Adi (Hurn) and his young wife Ange (Farnworth), haunted by memories of the death of their son, journey to the idyllic rural setting where he was conceived, determined to shed clothes, inhibitions and psychological traumas before the planet is destroyed forever. But the arrival of Luca (Burman), a charismatic and mysterious young photographer, turns what’s left of their world upside-down and the horror to come is of biblical proportions.

The theme for this year’s B-Movie, Underground and Trash Film Festival, held in the city of Breda in the Netherlands, is “Apocalypse.” So get ready to watch the world end dozens of different ways on Sept. 5-9 at various venues around the city.
The fun kicks off on the 5th with the German movie Hell by director Tim Fehlbaum. If you didn’t know, “hell” means “bright” in German and, given that title, this flick is set appropriately in a post-apocalyptic future where global warming has decimated the planet and surviving tribes battle for water and food.
Other post-apocalyptic visions include Milan Konjevic’s Zone of the Dead starring legendary zombie killer Ken Foree; Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro’s Bazillian underground hit Beyond the Grave about a world where magic and madness rule the world; and Rob van Eyck’s bizarrely twisted Afterman and Afterman 2.

Our dark fairy tale opens in the old west, where an unidentified gunslinger (Hurn) is a gunnin' for a mysterious stranger in a bar. Did you know that before Eve existed Adam had another wife named Lilith? Did you know vampire cowboys can be fans of Buffy? These are two of the things you will find out when you watch Umbrage: The First Vampire.
When this movie starts off like some cowboy movie with a vampire attack you think this may be the setting for the movie, but you would be wrong. After this initial attack we are taken to Europe, yet the music in the background keeps the whole country and western feel which gives it an odd feeling really. This does fit the movie as a whole though as I would describe it as odd.

Quite often, the universal definition of the vampire gets bent out of shape in cinema. Either there is too much lust, or not enough blood. Writers and creators have often spun a new take on the creature of the night and there is no escaping the romance. The flavours that exist can vary, and for filmmaker Drew Cullingham, Umbrage: The First Vampire is his vision of two loves—or should that be three?
"I guess I couldn't decide whether I wanted to do a western, a horror, or a drama," jokes Cullingham.
This auteur has no problems with mixing up the genres, and sometimes it can lead to an exciting product. At other times, the product is simply misunderstood.

The depths of December and a frozen wood in the heart of the English countryside; acrid smoke drifts through the bare trees… could you dream of a better place to watch a running battle between a small band of military survivors and a horde of blood thirsty zombies?
The original Zombie Diaries was shot in a video diary style and told the interweaving stories of three groups of people in the immediate aftermath of a zombie virus apocalypse. It’s a great movie and was shot for zero budget. This time, with the help of producer Rob Weston (and those Weinstein chaps) there is more money and there are more zombies.
The film makers, however, have stayed true to their original guerrilla spirit, witness the fact that they recruited their zombie extras via Facebook, and also through an open casting call broadcast on local BBC TV news.

Umbrage Movie PosterDirector/writer: Drew Cullingham.
Umbrage is a genre bender of a film shot in London, which was completed in 2010. The film might receive a release in the United Kingdom in 2010 with a forthcoming release in Australia later this year. North American rights have not been sold by the distributor, Left Film; yet the film is deserving of a release here as Umbrage, another word for a shadow or apparition, utilizes bits and pieces from vampire films, westerns, bible stories and even be Greek mythology. The director correctly notes that the film is "ambitious" (Quiet). However, the use of so many genres increases the likelihood that fans will like all, or at least some part of this vampire-styled flick.
The short version of the film's plot involves the traditional journey of a hero to the underworld like many before e.g. Achilles, Orpheus, Theseus and many more. Except this time the hero is a fanged cowboy with a bone to pick with hell's ruler and in this story, the devil has a more feminine, womanly physique.

Have we not really seen a good vampire film since Near Dark? The Forsaken? Nope. Let the Right One In comes very close, but despite that beautiful film's merits, when was the last time we were introduced to an iconic vampire character? Buffy and Angel maybe, but they are T.V. icons. Perhaps more to the point; when have we been given what we always craved? An Irish cowboy vampire! The answer is never - until now. Drew Cullingham’s soon-to-be released debut indie feature, Umbrage, is a very unique type of horror film – if that’s even what you want to call it.
