ReviewIf Kalki’s literary magnum opus belongs to Arunmozhi Varman, Mani Ratnam’s film belongs to Aditha Karikalan. And who can resist Vikram when he’s at the top of his game?Courtesy: Twitter/ Lyca ProductionsThe first part of Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan, co-written with Jeyamohan and Elango Kumaravel, began with Aditha Karikalan (Vikram) defeating the Rashtrakutas but refusing to behead their king. He circles the king on his horse, but when the moment arrives, his face clouds with a memory. He knocks off his headgear instead of his head. This is a battle-ready, aggressive prince but his rage is directed most at himself. The love he once harboured has twisted itself into hate. The first film ended with Arunmozhi Varman (Jayam Ravi) falling into the sea, but the second film doesn’t begin from there. Instead, it goes back to that love story once again. A young Karikalan...

Mani Ratnam’s larger-than-life epic recreation of Kalki’s Ponniyin Selvan is concluding. Part one of the two-part movie was received with great admiration for sticking to the plot points in the book. Though I have not read the book myself, the movie as a screenplay did justice to all the characters and kept me hooked till the end. With Part 2 just a few days away from release, it is interesting to see all the characters coming back to life in the grandest manner possible. Mani Ratnam’s eye for detail must be acknowledged here, and the first movie left quite an impact on me as a cinephile and a sucker for historical fiction. It ended at a point where the film created a genuine buzz among the filmgoers about what would happen in the second installment. The wait is about to end, but before that, let us talk about...

He was the voice of reason, the one sticking to the rules and protecting the people from the usurping landlord. The next morning, during the first show of Mani Ratnam’s ambitious Ponniyin Selvan I, Kishore appeared again as Ravidhasan, the bodyguard of the slain king Veerapandian, who is out to kill the Chola prince. Again, he was pitch-perfect. Cut to mid-October and the trailer of the Aha Tamil series Pettaikaali, starring Kishore and Kalaiyarasan dropped.

Lucy Chen is a badass when she's undercover.
We got more undercover Lucy on The Rookie Season 5 Episode 7, which made for an intense hour. The case managed to bring most of the characters together, which was interesting in and of itself.
And we also got some forward movement with Elijah, and it's not looking pretty.
First, we have to give props to Castle alum, and This is Us veteran Jon Huertas for directing the installment. He did a fantastic job!
But when it comes to the storylines, we'll kick things off with the weakest one: Nolan and Bailey's plotline about her feeling uncentered in his home was so inconsequential it's barely worth mentioning.
It was one of those things where one didn't even realize that she hadn't fully moved into Nolan's place or didn't feel like it was hers yet.

Tamil filmmaking legend Mani Ratnam takes on the formidable task of adapting Indian bestseller “Ponniyin Selvan” as a two-part epic, the first of which released to excellent box office at home and abroad on Sept. 29. Streamlining the source material considerably, this impressive franchise starter — co-written by Ratnam, Jayamohan and Kumaravel — remains mostly faithful to Kalki Krishnamurthy’s five novels, first serialized in the 1950s in the Tamil magazine Kalki before being translated into multiple other languages, including English.
The books were based on the great ruler Raja Raja Chola, who expanded his empire from modern-day Tamilnadu all the way north to the Ganges. Set to the music of Oscar winner A.R. Rahman (“Slumdog Millionaire”), “Ponniyin Selvan: Part One” boasts great battles on land and sea. The spy-vs.-spy nature of the story suggests a 12th-century Bourne movie, interspersed with song and dance.

It is often said that ‘the fruit of patience is sweet’. Mani Ratnam’s ‘Ponniyin Selvan: I’, a period drama based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s Ponniyin Selvan, serves as a perfect example of this idea.
Tamil superstar Vikram, who plays 10th century Chola prince Aditha Karikalan in the film, shares his thoughts on the movie as well as giving a peek of the intricacies that happened behind the scenes.
On being asked about his preparation for the jaw-dropping action scenes of the movie, Vikram explains: “We took a basic sword training and horse-riding training. It is the team which made it possible for us to do all this without taking any damage. We learned from each other.”
The movie, ‘Ponniyin Selvan: I’, have Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as the queen Nandhini and Chiyaan Vikram as the Prince Aditya Karikalan, a fierce warrior, and Karthi plays a grey-shaded role of a spy as Vanthiyathevan.

Make no mistake about it, Mani Ratnam’s ‘Ponniyin Selvan – Part I’ is a masterpiece that deserves all your adulation and love. The auteur does a phenomenal job of bringing to life the exceptional characters of eminent writer Kalki’s finest creation, ‘Ponniyin Selvan’.
The beauty of Part one of the two-part film lies in the fact that Mani Ratnam has not only made the story concise but has managed to do so carefully, taking adequate care not to dilute the essence of the novel or its charm.
He narrates with flair the intense and gripping story that has all elements ranging from bravery to conspiracy to romance to revenge to loyalty and manages to showcase the multiple layers of most of his characters.

The unit of director Mani Ratnam’s upcoming magnum opus, ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’, has now released a sneak peek in to the movie, much to the delight of fans who are waiting with bated breath for the film to release on September 30.
The one-minute 32-second long video clip released by the unit shows the Pandyas swearing an oath to wipe out the royal lineage of the Cholas in the presence of Goddess Kotravai.
A dialogue that a character utters indicates that the Pandyas have been defeated in battle and have retreated to the jungles.
“The brave Pandyas will wash your feet with Chola blood. The Pandyan kingdom is where the Pandyan Emperor lives. This forest is Madurai to us,” he says and adds, “Behold Amarabujanga Pandyan, son of Veera Pandiyan. He graces the Pandyan throne.”
The warriors then pledge their lives to Goddess Kali and to the Pandya flag and its emperor.

Recalling the glorious deeds of the great Chola kings who ruled Tamil Nadu in the ninth century, actor Vikram said that the benevolent and thoughtful acts of the great kings who ruled Tamil land was one of reasons why the popular Tamil phrase, ‘Tamilan Endru Sollada, Thalai Nimrnirndhu Nillada’ existed.

When it comes to dog movies, Hollywood usually piles on extraneous family-friendly melodrama to build up a narrative. A new documentary hailing for Chile, however, puts our stars–and pretty much only our stars–front and center. Los Reyes is a formally impressive, heartfelt look at canine best friends who more or less govern a skate park and those that cross their path. Told with a patient eye and little frills, one comes away with a raw, poignant feeling of camaraderie.
Bettina Perut and Iván Osnovikoff’s documentary, which I caught at Film Comment Selects earlier this year, will now get a theatrical release this August, courtesy of Grasshopper Film, starting at New York City’s Film Forum on the 14th of the month.
