All I wanted for Christmas was to find out who Riverdale‘s Black Hood killer is… and you know, kids, sometimes wishes do come true.
It’s Christmas time in Riverdale, and Kevin is having a Secret Santa party for the gang… which gets awkward fast, since Archie and Jughead are still freshly broken up with Veronica and Betty. Think Riverdale‘s Black Hood killer is regretting picking up the phone to call Betty Cooper yet?
Betty sprints over to Nick St. Clair’s hotel room as this week’s episode opens, wracked with guilt that she gave the Black Hood his name last week. She finds him angry but alive — just as Sheriff Keller arrives to haul him downtown for drugging Cheryl. The Black Hood tells Betty he didn’t kill Nick because he’s not a Riverdale native, but he liked seeing Betty’s true self: “It was beautiful,...

The Southside may be a dangerous place on Riverdale, but it is certainly filled with some gorgeous eye candy. Jughead's brooding good looks and Toni Topaz's fierceness aside, there is another serpent who is giving us a lot of mixed emotions this season: Sweet Pea. While his character has done some pretty questionable things thus far, the actor who plays him, Jordan Connor, couldn't be sweeter. See what we did there? From his adorable smile to his perfect hair, you will no doubt become a little obsessed after looking through his hottest pictures. The Black Hood’s killing spree is driving everybody bonkers on Riverdale, leading to a violent (and very wet) throwdown between Archie and the Southside Serpents.
With the whole town on edge, wondering who the next victim will be, Archie’s gang responds by doing what they do best: Jughead hits the library to research serial killers, Archie takes his newly acquired gun out for target shooting and Veronica shows her support for Archie’s Red Circle by designing a line of cute T-shirts and handing them out at school. The year was 1924; the place, New York City. A group of animals from the Central Park Zoo marched down a street in Harlem accompanied by a very special group of people: a handful of immigrant Macy’s employees, who wanted to express how thankful they were for living in the United States that year. And thus, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was born.
Though today the event is a big blowout, with A-list stars, Broadway performances and millions of spectators on hand to watch the marching bands, floats and balloons make their way downtown, the parade had humble beginnings,...

Dog and cat people can both equally rejoice at The Secret Life of Pets, the latest animation project by Chris Renaud and other talent behind the Despicable Me series. Canary, rabbit, and viper lovers get thrown a bone as well. The film, premised on what pets really do behind closed doors when no humans are watching, touches in a heart-warming way on the relationship between humans and animals. It’s also a wacky and sometimes over the top comedy adventure epic with gorgeous animation and a clever soundtrack. While it does not rise to the level of the tear-jerking, moralistic films that have come to define the Pixar pantheon, it at least offers a few laughs along with one or two “aw” inducing situations.

Australian director John Hillcoat’s got four features under his belt now, and I’m a massive fan of the previous three. All four of them share a few things, most prominently brutality and the darker side of humanity. What his latest film Triple 9 is noticeably different for is a modern setting; both The Proposition and Lawless are tales of the past and The Road is set in the bleak, bleak future. I wasn’t sure how his style would translate to a current story, but the short version is that it’s gritty, dark, and intense in ways his other films couldn’t capture. This is where Heat and Training Day meets The Town, and all of those films are better as a whole. Don’t count it out though.

The Russians Are Coming: Hillcoat Juggles Strands in Sprawling Heist Thriller
About half way into John Hillcoat’s impressively staged heist thriller Triple 9, it becomes apparent the audience won’t be allowed to develop any sort of sympathy for any of its various characters, a pity considering the potentially rich subtext. Rather than lob gobs of exposition our way, Matt Cook’s screenplay attempts to streamline characterization into the full-tilt madness of criminal legacies and the corresponding demise gilding the future of the powerful and greedy. At times, this congeals into intoxicatingly energetic and disturbingly violent moments of survival play, but whenever the narrative returns to moments of static calm the film has a nagging sense of perfunctory ornamentation, it’s more important elements given short shrift in an effort to balance a variety of odds and ends.

Blake was the first to turn around, and for a while it looked like he would get John on his team by default, but then Gwen turned around, soon followed by Pharrell. John told the coaches he saw himself writing “cheesy love songs,” prompting Gwen to wave her hands in the air and say, “That’s me!” In the end, Blake’s early turn won John over. John Martin: Team Blake.

You know when your restaurant table has a wobbly leg and the waiter promises to fix it, but no amount of wadded-up napkins or coasters or old baguette can seem to even things out? That’s kind of how I felt about most of the performances from Night 3 of The Voice‘s Season 7 Blind Auditions.

After years of development hell, news broke in December that Gal Gadot would become cinema’s first Wonder Woman in Zack Snyder’s Batman vs. Superman. The story is under wraps, and only time will tell what sort of role Diana will play in the superhero battle. Will she kick ass? Will her appearance Sucker Punch us with badness like David E. Kelley’s quickly killed series and Snyder’s shitty femme film? Could she end up on the editing room floor like Shailene Woodley in Spider-Man 2? These questions feel all the more pressing since Marvel head Kevin Feige recently expressed pride in how the company has chosen to show its female characters. Black Widow has been relegated to supporting player, and Captain Marvel is still floating around the rumor mill like so much lip service, rather than becoming an official part of one of Marvel’s carefully planned release phases.
