When he’s not fighting for democratic principles on Twitter, you can find Jeffrey Wright inquisitively peering over his glasses in a whole host of recent scientist roles. From Source Code to The Hunger Games franchise to Westworld, Wright has basically inherited the Jeff Goldblum mantle of playing likable but vaguely bumbling scientists in seemingly everything. Yet when Brandon Hardesty of the YouTube channel No Small Parts decided to dig into Wright’s filmography for an IMDb video, he discovered that “severely unrated character actor Jeffrey Wright” has actually had a far more diverse career than we’ve been giving him credit for recently.
Hardesty explains that while most character actors start their careers getting cast as a specific type before expanding into a wider range of roles, Wright has taken the opposite approach. Though he’s well known for his scientist persona now, his early career featured all kinds...

Whether or not you know his name, odds are you’ve seen James Hong on screen. The 88-year-old character actor has more than 400 credits to his name. And this new hour-long episode of the YouTube series No Small Parts dives into Hong’s lengthy career. Born in 1929 in Minneapolis to parents who emigrated from Hong Kong, Hong spent his childhood in both the U.S. and China. After showing an early aptitude for impressions (his Jimmy Stewart is uncanny), Hong eventually found his way into a showbiz career that has now spanned six decades.
The episode delves into the specifics of Hong’s career and also also zooms out to look at larger issues of Asian representation. Host and creator Brandon Hardesty discusses representation in a nuanced but comprehensible way, acknowledging the complexities and contradictions of the issue. For instance, Hardesty explains he was surprised that many of ...

Plenty of actors find themselves typecast in Hollywood (as cops, gangsters, etc.), but few are as highly specialized as Canadian performer Christopher Hart. A still-active stage magician by trade, Hart played a number of disembodied and/or possessed hands in films and television in the 1990s. Whenever a movie script called for a hand to crawl around on its own, Hart was the man for the job. His signature role, one he played three times, was that of Thing in The Addams Family, and this successful franchise led Hart to assignments like Idle Hands, the TV movie Quicksilver Highway, and even an episode of Angel. Hart’s singularly weird screen career is discussed and analyzed in an episode of No Small Parts, a YouTube series about character actors hosted by Brandon Hardesty. This mini-documentary should give viewers a whole new appreciation for what Hart was able to accomplish onscreen without...

The criminal caper that goes wrong is always good for a suspenseful, absorbing thriller movie. Just from memory there is The Asphalt Jungle, The Killing, (almost any classic film noir dealing with a criminal undertaking, if it didn’t go wrong it wouldn’t be noir now would it?) Odds Against tomorrow, Reservoir Dogs, Bob Le Flambeur, Rififi, and Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead.
The list is just about endless, in fact, precious few movies about criminals show the heist going off without a hitch. Add to that list 7 Minutes, a tough, unblinking look at a caper done by amateurs so desperate they are willing to risk everything to try and pull it off.
Sam (Luke Mitchell), Mike, (Jason Ritter, son of John and showing some good acting chops) and Owen (Zane Holtz) lead small town lives of quiet desperation. They try and make some money through drug...

A couple of clicks away on the web are scores of films made by fans – by turns hilarious, ingenious and ambitious. Lurking among their makers might be Hollywood's next generation.
Many still regard them as flatulent waste products of the socially deficient unemployed-layabout community. In most cases, they're pretty much right. But it looks increasingly likely that some of the amateur fan films that pervade YouTube and other online broadcasters will one day be cherished by movie-lovers as the formative works of the next generation of cutting-edge film-makers.
The idea of the fan film – an amateur, not-for-profit work inspired by a commercial movie, TV show or comic book – isn't new. Even before science fiction conventions in the 1970s began to provide sizeable audiences for homemade homages to much-loved sci-fi/fantasy franchises, teenage movie geeks such as Hugh Hefner and Batman fan Andy Warhol were finding their film-making feet making short...

Baked goods have a shelf life for good reason. I don't care how good the original pie was, after ten fucking years, it's going to be shitty and nauseating. Now on its Seventh incarnation, I'm praying to the god Flickus, god of direct-to-dvd, and Frattus, god of collegiate antics, that the lame American Pie series be taken out back and given the ol' double-barrel buh-bye. Bury the remains in hallowed earth, and then salt it so nothing may grow from it again. American Pie is now prepackaged like dollar store cake-mix boxes molded from a warehouse flood. The jokes stopped being funny four movies ago, they've run out of things to stick it in or have stuck in themselves, and they're recycling hit-on/burn lines that were old when the Pie was still fresh. The first film might have been my generation's Breakfast Club, igniting a few careers with a...

Why I kept watching the American Pie series after the third film was beyond me. They all involved a member of the Stiffler family, and were all terrible. But for the first time since American Wedding, the series takes an upturn with a smaller, funnier film that only has a few truly dumb hiccups along the way.
The Book Of Love is the first film since the original that doesn’t follow a member of the Stiffler family, and for that it deserves some credit. The Stiflers are obnoxious characters and every single one of them is just doing a bad impression of Seann William Scott’s performance of the original. It’s like they exist in some weird universe where every member of the family acts the exact same way, which is something I don’t think anyone can really relate to. The focus this time is on Rob...

Believe it or not, it’s now been 10 years since the original American Pie movie. It was a huge success costing around $10m to make and creating around $235m at the box office. It spawned two further theatrical releases and American Pie Presents: The Book of Love is the 4th straight-to-dvd release in the franchise making it the 7th in the series. None of it’s predecessors have managed to live up to the standard of the original movie but read on to find out if this seventh movie cu the mustard!
American Pie (1999) didn’t just start a franchise that would go for ten years or longer, it created (or possibly revived?) a whole new genre which sparked many other college based comedies, none of which have quite lived up to the daddy that is American Pie. All the elements have been there in the sequels but there seems...

Yup, Universal is releasing yet another direct-to-dvd American Pie sequel/spin-off. And yes, the jokes have gotten progressively less funny. This time around, the story focuses on three friends at Great Falls High, who like the original group, are "determined to succeed in their mission of manhood and score with the ladies of their dreams." But before that can happen, they must reconstruct "the bible". After some uproarious attempts with less than successful results, they accidentally discover a legendary guide to seduction hidden in the school library. It turns out to be a rarely-seen, often-sought manual about the secrets to sexual success, penned by some of the school's previous generations. But a few missing pages leads to hilarious surprises for everyone... including the alumni. The film stars Eugene Levy, Rosanna Arquette, Bug Hall, Kevin M. Horton, Brandon Hardesty, Beth Behrs, Melanie Papalia, Jennifer Holland, John Patrick Jordan, Louisa Lytton, Sherman Hemsley,...

Back in October, rumors were swirling that the American Pie series was going to make a triumphant return to theaters after finding so much success in the direct-to-dvd market. While that doesn't seem to be happening just yet, we've got one better for you: According to Moviehole, Tara Reid will reprise her role as Vicki Lathum in the next bargain-bin sequel, currently titled American Pie: Skank Patrol! I kid, of course, they're calling this installment American Pie: Book of Love, and it apparently follows a group of kids who discover the so-called "sex-bible" from the original film in their school library and set out on a quest to lose their virginity. Reid appeared as Vicki in the first two American Pie films, and will join Eugene Levy as the only other original cast member still munchin' on that tasty pie.

In Bart Got a Room, nerdy high school senior Danny (newcomer Steven Kaplan) has spent six hundred bucks on the hotel room, the limo and the tux for his prom. He's only missing one thing-the girl. Hampered by well-intentioned but clueless advice from his newly-divorced parents (William H. Macy, Cheryl Hines) and unsympathetic mocking from his best friends (Brandon Hardesty, Alia Shawkat), Danny battles peer pressure, teen angst and his own raging hormones as he desperately searches for a prom date. "What other evening in your life is as big? Maybe your wedding night, but odds are that's gonna end in divorce anyway," muses Danny's friend Craig as the two pals lounge poolside in the decidedly unhip retirement community town they call home. Danny's luckless quest turns to panic when he learns that even Bart-the school's biggest dweeb-has secured not only a date, but also a hotel room for the...

There is nothing like indie comedies that aren't afraid to approach the topic of high school dating or, even more racy, high school sex. Bring in prom and it's impossible to avoid the topic. Director/writer Brian Hecker gives us Bart Got a Room, what looks to be a terrific comedy starring William H. Macy, Cheryl Hines and Steven Kaplan.
