Master of horror Wes Craven gave our favorite genre one of its greatest icons when he introduced Freddy Krueger in 1984’s A Nightmare on Elm Street, but he had very little to do with what happened to Freddy after that. As his character’s story continued, Craven had zero creative control over the Nightmares – aside from when he co-wrote the third film and wrote and directed the seventh film – and didn’t see much money from them. As he told Fangoria, creating Freddy gave him great credibility, but not a great payday. So when Alive Films asked him to create a new horror franchise that he would have control over and a financial stake in, he jumped at the chance. Alive gave him complete creative freedom, and he gave them Shocker (Watch It Here), mixing ideas from some of his previous films, like A Nightmare on Elm Street and The Last House on the Left,...

In gearing up for today’s 30th anniversary of “The X-Files” premiere, which debuted back on September 10, 1993, I recently re-watched the series finale, titled “The Truth.” Yes, I know Fox’s sci-fi show later spawned two revival seasons in 2016 and 2018, but I’m still calling this episode, which aired on May 19, 2002, the official series finale. When “The Truth” originally aired, fans and critics alike were decidedly mixed on the two-part ender written and directed by series creator Chris Carter. But 21 years later, I can safely say that it’s better than you remember.
Scroll through the videos and photos below revisiting the nine best moments from “The X-Files” series finale, which featured the return of Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) as he went on trial for murdering an alien super soldier, while Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) and Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi) tried to secure his release. Few TV shows have had the seismic impact of The X-Files – with its swirling mysteries, long-running conspiracies, and shocking monster-of-the-week episodes. Factor in the legendary roles of Mulder and Scully (the incredible David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson) and you have the recipe for a multiple-decade-spanning phenomenon, that began on the small screen, moved to the big one (twice), and was revived for two additional series just when fans thought it was all over. Packed with alien encounters, supernatural shenanigans, and moments of very human horror, the show – spawned by Chris Carter – brought audiences into a world where you never quite knew what the next episode would bring.
30 years later, the impact of The X-Files hasn’t been diluted – and throughout its reign on big screens and small, Empire spoke to several of its key voices. Take a rifle through the X-Files Interview Archive…

Brace yourselves, “The X-Files” fans: your favorite TV show is turning 30 years old. Yep, it’s true. Fox’s Emmy-winning sci-fi juggernaut that followed FBI Agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) in their investigations into the paranormal debuted on September 10, 1993. Nine complete seasons aired until the series finale on May 19, 2002, with two movies premiering at the box office in 1998 and 2008, and then two additional revival seasons dropping in 2016 and 2018. All told, a whopping 218 episodes were produced for television — think of all those discarded cigarette butts! In Gold Derby’s photo gallery above, fans rank the 30 best episodes in honor of the 30th anniversary, according to IMDb.com votes.

Things changed forever on September 11, 2001, both in real life and in the world of entertainment. There's a clear line drawn through history; a pre-and-post 9/11 line. The most obvious example of this line is when you watch a film or TV show set in New York. If it was shot prior to 9/11, there's a good chance you'll see an establishing shot of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center somewhere in there.
If you lived through the events, even seeing the Twin Towers in an older film or TV show can be a momentarily jarring experience. After the terrorist attacks, a trailer for Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" showing a helicopter caught in a web strung between the towers became a kind of time capsule. Posters for the film that showed the World Trade Center reflected in Spidey's eye were pulled. And some films that came out shortly after the attacks...

Raise your hand if you had “Ryan Coogler reboots ‘The X-Files'” on your 2023 Bingo card.
In the March 27 episode of the podcast “On The Coast with Gloria Macarenko,” “X-Files” creator Chris Carter claimed that Coogler is remaking the beloved Fox sci-fi/horror show for a new audience. “I just spoke to a young man, Ryan Coogler, who is going to remount ‘The X-Files’ with a diverse cast,” Carter stated. Fox has yet to make an official statement about the rumored project.
The original showrunner later added that Coogler “has got his work cut out for him, because we covered so much territory.” Indeed, “The X-Files” first aired for nine seasons between 1993 and 2002, with two feature films in 1998 and 2008. Fox then revived the series for two more seasons, which were broadcast in 2016 and 2018. The last episode to air was its 218th overall.

We've got another promo spot for you to watch for The X-Files Season 11! As you'll see, the tension is building as Agents Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) are looking for their son. They also are forced to reluctantly team up with Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi), who they seem to have lost trust in.
This next season will consist of ten episodes. Two of them will continue the saga story, and the rest will be more standalone "monster of the week" episodes. I'm so excited to see what creator Chris Carter and his team have in store. When teasing what we can expect, a previous report revealed:
With more monster-of-the-week episodes this season, fans can expect season 11 to be united in theme but varied in tone. After episode one delves into the Cigarette Smoking Man’s (William B. Davis) backstory and apparent family ties to Mulder, the second hour...

So get the popcorn ready and set the DVR up for Wednesday, January. 3rd. The ‘X-Files‘ have now be re-opened for the agents to discover the truth.
Fans can expect some familiar faces this upcoming season. Mitch Pileggi will return as FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner. The Cigarette Smoking Man (William B Davis) will also return to expand his secret agenda and give Mulder some more worrisome nights. The ‘Lone Gunmen’ (Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund, and Bruce Harwood) have been confirmed for the upcoming season. It sounds as if Season 11 will center on searching for William ( Mulder & Scullly’s baby with “special power’s”). Season 11 will also deliver 8 monster of the week episodes that is not connected to the alien mythology of the series.

The X-Files Season 11 is going to open the door a little further on the character Walter Skinner as it will include an episode that will dive into his history and origin. Actor Mitch Pileggi, who is coming back to reprise his role, teased what the episode would entail, saying:
“You’re going to find out a lot more about his past. Fans will find out who he is, where he comes from and why he is the way he is.”
Skinner has always been a great and fascinating character in the series and it will be really interesting to learn about the shit that he has gone through in his life to turn him into the hardass man that we've come to know in the series.

A year after Fox revived The X-Files, Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny are once again stepping into the roles of Dana Scully and Fox Mulder for a new audiobook. After nine years of monsters, aliens and shadow government conspiracies, The X-Files closed its doors during the spring of 2002. Taken off air as a result of declining ratings and a general drop in quality, its loss left a large hole in the hearts of many who’d followed along since the early 90s.
Thankfully for us Xphiles, what was once thought to be dead didn’t stay buried long. In 2008, creator Chris Carter brought his now iconic series back into the limelight with the stand-alone movie, I Want to Believe. However, while it brought fans the married Mulder and Scully tandem that they’d been pining for for years, an uninteresting plot, some embarrassing writing and poor casting decisions led to a box office flop.

We’re now a little over a week since The X-Files concluded its long-awaited tenth season. In only six episodes, it managed to hit some wonderful highs and disappointing lows, but the thrill of seeing Agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder back on the small screen was palpable all the way through.
Throughout its brief run, the newest season also featured the return of original X-Files characters Walter Skinner, the evil Cigarette Smoking Man, Monica Reyes, and – all too fleetingly – the lovable Lone Gunmen. With the series’ future pretty bright once more and new episodes seemingly a lock somewhere down the line, it’s hard not to look back at the original nine seasons of the series and wonder who else could return, from some of the duo’s fellow FBI agents to friends and foes alike whose fates are still left dangling since we last saw them.

After many years away, The X-Files has returned to television as a limited series. The show was very popular in the 1990s but the series' ratings saw big drops at the end of its original run. There's been a lot of hype surrounding The X-Files' return and all involved say they'd be interested in producing an 11th season at some point. But, will the audience and the Fox network be interested? Stay tuned.
The series takes place 14 years after the closure of the original X-Files. FBI special agent Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) is contacted by his former partner, Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) at the behest of Assistant Director Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi). [Originally appeared in Deadly Magazine #5] In 1993, The X-Files premiered on Fox, forever changing genre television, and after 20 years, its influence is still felt. No series since The X-Files has even come close to creating such incredibly nuanced and compelling storytelling than what Chris Carter’s series delivered each week for nine seasons.
What made The X-Files so remarkable was that it hit the ground running from its first episode and maintained that momentum. While Seasons 8 and 9 aren’t remembered fondly by fans, I’d argue that the storytelling still remained strong until the series finale in May 2002.
Known generally for its overarching alien and governmental conspiracy plots, The X-Files always managed to find clever and unusual ways to celebrate so many horror and sci-fi tropes, much like its predecessors (The Twilight Zone and Kolchak: The Night Stalker influenced Carter when he was first conceiving the series in the early ’90’s.)

[Originally appeared in Deadly Magazine #5] For nine seasons (and two feature films), fans of The X-Files became engrossed with FBI Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully’s search for the truth and along the way, we were introduced to numerous supporting characters that helped them (or did their damnedest to foil their efforts) along the way. Here’s a look back at some of The X-Files’ greatest unusual suspects.
Deep Throat (Jerry Hardin)
Mulder’s first informant when the X-Files division of the FBI was established. A member of The Syndicate who wanted to expose some of the secrets the government had tried desperately to keep hidden, Deep Throat was tragically gunned down while trading an alien embryo for Mulder’s life in the first season finale, “The Erlenmeyer Flask.”

Now that the return of The X-Files is upon us, it’s the perfect time to revisit all nine seasons and 202 episodes* of the original series before we’re thrust back into the world of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully (and Walter Skinner and John Doggett and, yes, Monica Reyes). In the ’90s, there was no better place to get a dose of conspiracy paranoia and nutty sci-fi, not to mention butterflies in your stomach watching David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson’s tension build. At its heart, the series was about confronting the darkness within ourselves — you know, the crippling doubt of the unknown, the fear of what’s to come. It just used aliens and monsters to explore that in a way that decades later, still resonates with viewers. As a refresher course for the series we all fell in love with, and then slowly fell out of love...

On Sunday, January 24th, Fox will bring back Chris Carter’s brilliant series, The X-Files, for a six-episode revival run that will reunite beloved FBI Special Agents Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) for more alien-related exploits.

Mythology in regards to The X-Files could mean various things: the existence of aliens and how our government plays into that, various characters that fit in with different prophecies, the “Black Oil” that became a prominent antagonistic force during season three, the various conspirators and their attempts to derail Mulder and Scully’s work on the X-Files, Scully’s...

Believe it or not, The X-Files is coming back to TV. (See what we did there?) To celebrate the return of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson's beloved Mulder and Scully, Fox has gone all out with the creepy posters, including the one above which invokes the classic poster from Mulder's office (one he rips in half in the premiere episode!). Duchovny and Anderson are definitely not alone (sorry, can't stop with the puns) in their return to The X-Files. Along for the ride are familiar faces William B. Davis as the Cigarette Smoking Man (yes, he died at the end of the series) and Mitch Pileggi as Walter Skinner. New pals for Mulder and Scully include Joel McHale, Robbie Amell and Lauren Ambrose as new FBI...

Fox has unveiled three promo posters for the highly anticipated return of The X-Files. I’ve been binge watching the series again for the past month, and I’m currently deep into the fourth season. I love reliving these paranormal adventures.
Mulder and Scully have been heavily featured in most of the marketing material for the upcoming revival, but one of the promo banners here includes both Walter Skinner and The Smoking Man. I imagine there are going to be some good times ahead for X-Files fans. it’s going to be great to see the old gang back together again proving that the truth is out there.
