Exclusive: Jane Fleming, a producer and president emeritus of Women In Film, and Dear White People and Real Women Have Curves producer Effie Brown have joined the board of advisors at Dwf-la, the new name of the annual Los Angeles-based film festival Dances With Films.
The additions, which also include bringing aboard Fine Line Films acquisitions executive Jackie Tepper as Dwf-la’s first producing partner, will bolster the group’s plan to grow as a destination for filmmakers and buyers (a void partially left in the city by the shuttering of the Los Angeles Film Festival after last year).
“Jane and Effie have both been leaders for many years where they have both been recognized for their achievements while breaking the glass ceiling,” festival co-founder Leslee Scallon said. “They are not only exceptional and successful producers, but leaders in their field. With Jane and Effie joining our advisory board, this...

Steve Elzer, senior VP of media relations for Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group, will be leaving Sony in December after a 12-year run at the studio, the PR executive disclosed in an email to colleagues Tuesday. “I have had an extraordinary run here and I have nothing but the greatest respect for the team at Sony,” wrote Elzer, who will remain onboard to assist Marc Weinstock and Charles Sipkins with the transition. Sipkins joined the studio several weeks ago as its new senior communications executive; Weinstock is Sony’s head of marketing. Elzer was informed of the decision on Monday and was caught off-guard,...

Some of Hollywood’s funniest guys and gals came out for the L.A. premiere of the pizza-boy-turned-robber-with-a-bomb movie, “30 Minutes Or Less,” Monday night.
Jesse Eisenberg and Aziz Ansari, who star in the film, hung out with producer Ben Stiller, as well as Dane Cook and co-stars Nick Swardson and Michael Pena at the star-studded event.
Other celebs spotted on the red carpet? Joe Jonas, Brody Jenner and Busy Phillips -- just to name a few.
But while the film may deliver some big laughs, there’s one group that isn’t laughing at the story of a pizza delivery driver forced to rob a bank with a bomb strapped to his chest.
In 2003, pizza delivery man Brian Wells was killed when a metal bomb collar he was wearing exploded. Wells was reportedly forced to rob a bank while wearing the explosive device.
Sound familiar? It's probably because that's kind...

I'm not sure how many of you already read my piece detailing the true story behind this weekend's new release 30 Minutes or Less, but you will probably want to read it before devouring this piece as the Associated Press is reporting Jean Heid, sister to Brian Wells, the pizza delivery driver who was killed when a bomb handcuffed to his neck exploded following a bank robbery, is none-too-pleased the true story has been adapted into a Hollywood comedy. The studio, however, is claiming ignorance.
"Neither the filmmakers nor the stars of 30 Minutes or Less were aware of this crime prior to their involvement in the film," said Steve Elzer, the senior vice president who handles media relations for Sony Pictures' Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group, in a statement. "The writers were vaguely familiar with what had occurred and wrote an original screenplay that does not mirror the real-life tragedy." Based...

The sequel to The Da Vinci Code has become one of the first motion pictures to be impacted by the writers strike.
With the strike about to head into its third week, Sony issued a statement on Friday saying that Columbia Pictures has decided to postpone production of Angels & Demons, in which Tom Hanks is to reprise his role as symbologist Robert Langdon with Ron Howard once again directing. The studio said the screenplay by Akiva Goldsman, an adaptation of the Dan Brown novel, was not ready to go before the cameras.
"While the filmmakers and the studio feel the screenplay is very strong, we do not believe it is the fully-realized production draft required of this ambitious project," said Sony spokesman Steve Elzer. "We do not expect any other film on our 2008 slate to be affected."
Angels had been scheduled to begin production early next year and was slated for a Dec. 19, 2008 release. While no new start date has been set, its release date has been moved to May 15, 2009, a week before Fox has scheduled its release of James Cameron's 3-D feature Avatar.
Sony's 2008 lineup includes the 22nd Bond film, Hancock starring Will Smith, Step Brothers starring Will Ferrell.
