The Hong Kong International Film Festival Society (Hkiffs) unveils its glittering line-up of Firebird Awards competitions and Fipresci prize jury members. The announcement follows the decision to continue with the competitions despite the earlier cancellation of the 44th Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF44) due to an escalation in Covid-19 cases. Through online judging, five panels of independent juries will select a total of 13 winners from the 42 competition titles.
Hkiffs will announce the results on 20 August.
Leading the jury for the Young Cinema Competition for Chinese Language Films is revered Hong Kong director Stanley Kwan, who has been an iconic figure in local and international cinema for decades. Joining him are fellow director-cum-cinematographer O Sing-pui; and acclaimed independent art and cultural worker May Fung. Together they will identify four winners among the emerging talents in recent Chinese language cinema.

All We Do Is Run! by Samuel Ho
The Walking Dead is back and already in my nightmares. (If your sleep is too sound, try adding in some flaming zombies. That’ll keep you tossing and turning for sure.) To celebrate, or synergize, the Hero Complex Gallery is hosting a show of officially liensed Walking Dead-themed art with contributions from a bunch of Poster Posse members. And, of course, it is up to the usual standard of awesomeness. All of them are fantastic, but I am partial to Samuel Ho’s All We Do Is Run! and Glen Brogan’s* Love at First Bite because I have realized that I want the show to end with Glenn and Maggie safe and happy on some compound where they have a million babies. When (spoiler!) that dude with the baseball bat kept getting interrupted just before he knocked out Glenn, I was dying.

Keanu Reeves' 47 Ronin looks like it's going to be a very cool fantasy-martial-arts-action film. In anticipation of the film's release, Blurppy is back with an awesome new collection of fan-made poster art for it. The posters come from several different artists, including Linda Hordijk, , Chris Skinner, Salvador Anguiano, John Hughes, Berkay Daglar, Doaly, Samuel Ho, Matt Needle, Rich Davies, Paul Ainsworth, Matt Ferguson, Mat Weller, Juan Hugo Martinez, Joe Vetoe, Khoa Ho, Chris Garofalo, and Paul Shipper.
From ancient Japan’s most enduring tale, the epic 3D fantasy-adventure “47 Ronin” is born. Keanu Reeves leads the cast as Kai, an outcast who joins Oishi (Hiroyuki Sanada), the leader of the 47 Ronin. Together they seek vengeance upon the treacherous overlord who killed their master and banished their kind. To restore honor to their homeland, the warriors embark upon a quest that challenges them with a series of trials that would destroy ordinary warriors.

Check out this radical collection of illustrations for a show at the Gauntlet Gallery focusing on art inspired by the French electronic music duo Daft Punk.
The show is called "ReDiscovery", and it was put on to "celebrate the release of Daft Punk’s first album in eight years, Gauntlet Gallery will feature works by over 40 painters, sculptors, digital and screen print artists, each of whom has created an original work of art inspired by Daft Punk."
I've included a bunch pieces from the show below. A lot of them are extremely cool. Check 'em out!
Here's a not from the artist, Paul Shipper on the piece above:
I approached my piece as a promotional poster for the first single that was to be released from 'Random Access Memories' - 'Get Lucky' featuring Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers. I instantly loved this track and had it practically on repeat during...

HONG KONG -- The all-important Chinese New Year boxoffice season has led to a stepping up in the battle against illegal camcording.
The move to stem the flow of illegally distributed new releases over the holiday period was announced Tuesday by the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department, the Hong Kong Theatre Assn. and the Motion Picture Assn.
"Illegal camcording can cause serious economic damage to the film industry as copies of the movies can be available on the Internet and pirated DVDs within hours of movies opening in theatres," said Sam Ho, MPA director of operations Greater China.
The increased measures include the deployment of plain clothes officers in cinemas, the distribution of anticamcording leaflets and a reward plan that offers HK$2,000 ($256) for theater employees who successfully detect a patron illegally recording a film.
Hong Kong law stipulates that it is illegal to take video recording equipment into a place of public entertainment, an offense that carries a fine of HK$50,000 ($6,410) and up to three years in jail.

HONG KONG -- Anti-piracy training seminars for law enforcement agents in Hong Kong have been conducted by the MPA in association with the CJ Mark Committee of the Content Overseas Distribution Assn., the MPA said Friday.
"Enforcement is an essential component of an effective IPR protection strategy," said Sam Ho, MPA director of operations, Greater China.
Sixty customs officers attended the seminars, which updated them on the latest trends in piracy and how to identify pirate products and equipment.
"As new products are from time to time launched in the market, ways to quickly differentiate the pirated goods are increasingly important to law enforcement officers," said Ben Ho, head of Hong Kong Customs Intellectual Property Investigation Bureau.
