- Youngest US Navy beachmaster on D-Day (6 June 1944) in World War II at age 23. At the invasion of Normandy, he was one of the first personnel off a landing craft at Omaha beach, directing the arrival of new troops and the evacuation of the dead and wounded.
- In February 2012, the French government awarded him the Legion of Honor Chevalier (Knight) for his contributions to the liberation of France in WWII.
