South Australian Anthony Frith’s close encounter with “Sharknado” prodco The Asylum in “Mockbuster” is among five handpicked titles to be showcased at the Adelaide Film Festival Goes to Cannes showcase, held at Cannes Marché du Film on May 17.
The five works in progress range from queer adult anime, comedic doc, and traditional non-fiction to family dramas, helmed mostly by newcomers, and reflect the dynamic filmmaking community of Southern Australia, set to tempt potential co-financiers in Cannes.
So far two titles have received international backing. “Mockbuster” has been pre-sold to Giant Pictures and Drafthouse Films for North America, on top of domestic distribution in Australia via Umbrella Entertainment; Kelly Schilling’s drama “With or Without You,” handled locally by Icon Film Distribution, has been picked up by global sales agent LevelK.

“Bhaag Milkha Bhaag” (2013) and “Dangal” (2016) are both biographical films based on the lives of Indian sportspersons. However, while representing actual events, the two films — either directly or indirectly — highlight various themes about sports arenas in India being extremely gendered spaces. The most important of these become the strict creation and demarcation of the feminine and masculine binaries, something that goes on to shape the overall narratives of the films.

Even though nationalism, as a concept, remains central in both movies, something that comes in its way is the masculine ego of different sportspersons. In “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag”, this happens when the main character, Milkha Singh (Farhan Akhtar), who has all the abilities to win an international medal for his country, is roughed up by his fellow athletes as they fear competition. Susan Sarandon, playing the U.S. Secretary of State Alaska Adams, gets the better of Bryan Brown, as the Australian prime minister, in a fast-paced verbal duel that represents the first footage from the Sean Penn-produced satirical comedy series “C*A*U*G*H*T.”
An elite team of Aussie soldiers is sent to an island nation to retrieve a secret file that has gone astray. Mistaken for Americans, they are captured by freedom fighters and produce a hostage video that goes viral. When the soldiers achieve celebrity status on social media, they realize that being caught might just be the best thing that could’ve happened to them.
“C*A*U*G*H*T” explores themes of identity, fame, and the absurdity of the viral age. “Why can’t we comedically deconstruct the intellectual ideas that humanity is facing right now?” says Kick Gurry who directs, produces and stars in the six-part series.

There’s nothing quite like having an Oscar-winning actor in your corner, or perhaps a star of one of the biggest TV Series of all time. In the case of Kick Gurry, creator, producer and actor in the forthcoming Stan Original Series “Caught,” the backing of Sean Penn and Matthew Fox has undoubtedly been a boon.
After Gurry shared an early teaser of the show crafted with friends in Australia, Penn’s reaction was music to his ears. As Gurry shared with Variety, “He said everyone’s afraid of stories right now and we have to be pushing forward with courage in storytelling.”
Indeed, the courage to tell bold, new stories has resulted in an audacious six-episode satirical comedy series slated to premiere later in 2023. The series boasts a formidable cast that Gurry describes as a “murderer’s row of talent.” Among them, Sean Penn, who also serves as an executive producer,...

Saying goodbye to Legacies is not going to be easy.
Legacies Season 4 Episode 19 perfectly highlighted that there's still a lot of life left in the series.
It's just unfortunate that we've been waiting all this time to see any form of stakes.
The Vampire Diaries and The Originals killed off characters as the shows deemed necessary, but Legacies has predominantly found loopholes to keep everyone safe.
In some aspects, the message of the series is that good will prevail, but sometimes, there are war casualties, and allowing big characters to die isn't something the series should be shying away from.
We'll start with Aurora. If you watch Legacies online, you know the broader aspect of her arc has been coming to terms with the past.
Whether that involves killing the Tribrid or realizing there's more to life than being filled with hate, it's all been part of her journey.

Joseph Morgan played Klaus Mikaelson to perfection for seven years across The Vampire Diaries and its spinoff, The Originals.
Recent social media posts have left fans wondering whether he will appear in the forthcoming series finale of Legacies following its cancellation.
The third series in The Vampire Diaries Universe has featured plenty of faces from the past, and fans have been begging for more Klaus content since The Originals Season 5 Episode 13.
If you watch The Originals online, you know Klaus was killed off in the final scene of the New Orleans-set drama.
Morgan took to social media Wednesday to address the speculation.
“First of all, I haven’t seen any cast from the Tvdu in years, not in person at least, I promise you that,” Morgan tweeted.
“All this speculation is gonna drive you crazy."
"Let go of these nonsense theories about hidden codes, Everyone knows Klaus Mikaelson is dead.

Just when I thought I finally understood the inner workings of Legacies‘ Underworld, Hope decided to go and change the rules. Typical Mikaelson.
After bringing Landon up to speed (“Whoa, wait, there are gods now?!”) atop Thursday’s episode, Hope laid out her plan to kill the Ferryman, something Landon was big-time against. “People come to Limbo to learn lessons, not to repeat the same mistake,” he told her, conveniently forgetting that repeating mistakes is Hope’s family’s favorite pastime. Cut to Hope killing the Ferryman with his own scythe. Real cold.

Cruelty, destruction and perfect hair are all in a day’s work for Luke Mitchell, who’s currently playing one of the biggest, baddest Big Bads that Mystic Falls has ever seen.
Though we’ve caught glimpses of him in flashbacks, Mitchell’s character — a thousand-year-old god who just woke up from the longest nap ever — quite literally crash lands on Legacies this Thursday (The CW, 9/8c). And no tribrid is safe.

Saying goodbye is always tough, but at least Josie left town in one piece.
Legacies Season 4 Episode 9 said goodbye to Kaylee Bryant as a series regular, possibly ending Josie's storyline for good, and quite frankly, we should have seen it coming.
If you watch Legacies online, you know Josie has struggled mainly with what is expected of her, and her co-dependency on people has not helped.
The events of Legacies Season 4 Episode 8 gave her this reckoning that she needs to make a change in her life before it's too late.
Buying the ticket for Finch without even thinking it through solidified that, even though they are no longer together, Josie will struggle to proceed without any of the people she loves in her life.
You wanted someone who loves you enough to stay and fight, even if it’s a lost cause.

Legacies is throwing it all the way back to The Originals again.
Legacies Season 4 Episode 8 brought Rebecca Breeds back into the fold as Aurora de Martel, a villain from The Originals Season 3.
The milestone installment found Aurora tricking Hope into swapping bodies with her, and now, Hope is no longer the Tribrid.
Aurora's feud with the Mikaelsons stems back hundreds of years, and she's not the type of person to give up without a fight.
"Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) finds herself involved in a game of cat and mouse as Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) sets out to make things right," reads the official logline for Legacies Season 4 Episode 9.
The "cat and mouse" game is likely Aurora chasing her to try to get her own back for the torment she went through at the hands of the Mikaelsons.

Aurora de Martel has been a crafty individual since her days on The Originals Season 3, so it was inevitable she would return to cause some havoc for Hope Mikaelson.
Legacies Season 4 Episode 8 confirmed the fan theory that the person contacting Hope on the phone under the guise of working with Triad was indeed Aurora.
When you consider how Aurora's storyline played out, she had to come back at one point, and it's nice to have her back in this universe all these years later.
Aurora's sentiments on the Mikaelsons were right on the money, and the way she managed to trick Hope into swapping their bodies proved there's a lot more carnage on the menu between these enemies.
Rebecca Breeds slipped into the role very well, and I hope she becomes a recurring player instead of a special guest star for a few episodes.

Spoiler Alert: The following story contains details from the season finale of CBS and MGM Television’s Clarice.
On Thursday, Clarice came to the end of its first (and likely final) season, presenting resolution in the case of the Anacostia River murders, as well as signs of personal growth on the part of the titular FBI agent, and a couple of major deaths.
By the time finale, “Family Is Freedom” kicks off, ViCap has uncovered most of the dark secrets of Alastar Pharmaceuticals and its emotionally disturbed CEO, Nils Hagen (Peter McRobbie). Putting her career on the line to aid them in their investigation is Clarice’s fellow agent and best friend, Ardelia (Devyn A. Tyler), who is told by her boss to stay out of the matter, but refuses to do so.

Clarice Episode 13
Clarice, episode 13, “Family is Freedom,” only closes some of the cliffhangers “Father Time” ended on. We still don’t know whether Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds) will be reinstated into the ViCAP team, and we never find out what happened to young Clarice when her Sheriff father left her at the mercy of some pissed off criminals.
The last image we saw of that encounter, when Clarice ran it through her repressed memory bank, was a young Clarice with a gun held to her head as her father hangs his head in shame in the distance. The men who said they were cheated, and called Clarice’s dad a criminal and a coward, warned him he couldn’t hide behind his little girl. We never learn how that scenario plays out. How does she live through that incident to become the wild card federal cop she is today?...

Clarice Episode 12
In Clarice episode 12, “Father Time,” Agent Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds) finally loses her shit and clocks someone, and the series is better off for it. The young agent who rose to the top of a media circus on her first serial killer case has been scrutinized, chastised, hypnotized, and downsized since returning to the field. She’s had to run amok straight into danger just to get a point across which will solve cases. Tonight, Clarice lashes out at everyone, packs her boxes, and runs until her legs give out. It provides the most satisfying episode the series has given so far.

Delivering series follow-ups to Jonathan Demme’s iconic “The Silence of the Lambs,” beloved kids projects “The Mighty Ducks” and “Saved by the Bell,” and Marvel Cinematic Universe characters all seem like daunting, if not impossible, challenges on the face of it.
Yet, in the burgeoning era of franchising, studios are digging deeper than ever into their IP mines. This results in old favorites needing to feel both familiar and new again, to captivate a broad audience. Much of that task fell to those who created the visual landscapes of series, including CBS’ “Clarice,” Peacock’s “Saved by the Bell” and Disney Plus’ “WandaVision.”
According to Maja Vrvilo, helming the pilot episode of “Clarice” was the most intimidating challenge of her career to date. “Being a fan of ‘Silence of the Lambs,’ it was incredibly exciting and incredibly terrifying at the same time,” she says.

Clarice is poised to be silenced by CBS in the coming weeks.
The Silence of the Lambs prequel was initially set to move to Paramount+ following its low-rated CBS run, but now the series is in a more precarious position than before.
Deadline is reporting that talks between the streamer and co-producer MGM have fallen through, with neither side able to agree on a deal to keep the show alive.
The news is not that surprising. Clarice was reported to be in contention to move from Paramount+ alongside Evil and Seal Team, but when the streamer officially picked up the other two, Clarice was notably absent.
Moving a series from broadcast to streaming is not an easy business because it means that new deals have to be struck, and Deadline says that the license fee for the show was set to increase from the $1.2 million - $1.3 million fee on CBS...

It looks like Agent Starling will be turning in her badge. Last month, it looked like the Clarice TV show, was poised to move from the CBS network to the Paramount+ streaming service (along with Seal Team and Evil) for its second season. Now, Deadline reports it's looking more likely that the show will be cancelled instead.
Based on The Silence of the Lambs, the Clarice TV series stars Rebecca Breeds, Michael Cudlitz, Lucca de Oliveira, Kal Penn, Nick Sandow, Devyn Tyler, and Marnee Carpenter. The series is a deep dive into the untold personal story of FBI Agent Clarice Starling (Breeds) as she returns to the field in 1993, one year after the hunt for serial killer Buffalo Bill (Simon Northwood). Brilliant and vulnerable, Clarice’s bravery gives her an inner light that draws monsters and madmen to...

Clarice Episode 11
Clarice, episode 11, “Achilles Heel,” could almost be called the “I-told-you-so” episode. After half a season of knocking down Agent Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds) as a rogue, unreliable, dangerous or mentally unbalanced cop, almost every character who got screen time this season gets to say their version of “we should have listened to Clarice.” This bodes well for the investigation, but also for the psyches of her closest acquaintances.
In the last episode, Clarice decided Catherine Martin (Marnee Carpenter) had to face some consequences for her actions. The surviving victim of the serial killer Buffalo Bill took his mother hostage, not entirely intentionally, but functionally enough to warrant observation. Catherine’s mother, the Attorney General Ruth Martin (Jayne Atkinson), is incensed over the idea her daughter is being victimized by the system, especially since she gave strict orders to the agent she forced to go rogue,...

“Clarice” may take place in 1993, but its issues surrounding race and gender in the workplace feel right out of 2021. According to the people in front of and behind the camera, that was a huge part of the reason for doing the show.
“For me, the thing that was exciting about telling a story in 1993, while being in 2021, was the prism that we get to look at our world from. It feels like a really safe way to investigate issues that are topical today: What it means to be a woman in the workplace. What it means to have a friendship from people who are culturally diverse from one another,” Elizabeth Klaviter, showrunner for “Clarice,” told TheWrap. “It’s a very rich and fertile ground for us in terms of storytelling.”
Klaviter was joined by “Clarice” co-creator Jenny Lumet and fellow executive producer Heather Kadin (also president of Secret Hideout), and the show’s stars,...

Clarice Episode 10
Clarice, episode 10, “Motherless Child,” finally addresses the elephant in the room. Well, almost. The Silence of the Lambs spinoff is a series of almosts. Agent Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds) almost gets killed every episode, as well as nearly always coming to the edge of getting fired, sometimes twice in an installment.
Tonight, Clarice almost helps Catherine Martin (Marnee Carpenter), who almost kills Buffalo Bill’s mom, Lila Gumb (Maria Ricossa). She also almost helps Attorney General Ruth Martin (Jayne Atkinson), who nearly fires her for it. Ultimately, neither one gets what they want, while Starling gets to decide what they deserve. Lila, who never wanted anything to begin with except to be left alone, loses even that. With great power comes greater entitlement.
Clarice also almost derails Agent Ardelia Mapp (Devyn Tyler) in her fight for equal representation within the FBI. Adelia is...

In a television landscape riddled with reboots, sequels and revivals, audiences are primed for stories that pick up where another tale has left off. Figuring out how to continue the narrative of a longtime franchise or beloved character isn’t always easy, but when done well, can translate to loyal fans — and even Emmy attention, as in the case of AMC’s “Breaking Bad” prequel, “Better Call Saul.” This season, several TV series are keeping well-known lore alive, but evolving their stories in new and sometimes unexpected ways.
Among the shows that are continuing journeys of known characters are everything from “Power Book II: Ghost” at Starz, to NBC’s “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” the latter of which has revived beloved detective Elliot Stabler, played by Christopher Meloni. Other series pick up characters or universes in slightly less conventional ways.

“I wanted to honor Jodie, but couldn’t copycat her,” admits Rebecca Breeds about playing Clarice Starling in “Clarice.” The character, from the 1988 novel “The Silence of the Lambs,” won Jodie Foster an Oscar for the 1991 film of the same name. For our recent webchat, she continues, “It was such a wonderful experience reading the book. Gleaning all the Clarice parts. Jodie would have done the same thing. Julianne Moore would have done the same thing (for ‘Hannibal’ in 2001). Now I am a part of that legacy.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
The CBS drama takes place in 1993, one year after the events of “Lambs,” when Starling returns to FBI field work. “Seal Team” and “Clarice” could soon be on the move. Variety has learned from sources that there are plans taking shape to move the series off of CBS to the ViacomCBS streaming service Paramount Plus.
According to sources, the current plan would be to air a few episodes of the fifth season of “Seal Team” on CBS before moving it over to the streamer, though deals for this are still being worked out. The move would also likely mean a reduced episode count for the series, which ran for 22 episodes its first two seasons, then 20 in Season 3, and 16 in Season 4, with the Season 4 set to wrap up on May 26. “Clarice,” meanwhile would move to Paramount Plus for the entirety of its second season.
Reps for CBS and CBS Studios declined to comment.

In what could be a glimpse of the future of a symbiotic relationship between broadcast networks and their streaming siblings, I hear two high-profile CBS drama series on the bubble, Seal Team, and Clarice, will be moving to Paramount+ next season.
The deals are still being finalized but I hear the David Boreanaz-starring military drama, which is wrapping its fourth season, will kick off its fifth season on CBS next fall and air its first several episodes — likely four — on the broadcast network before migrating to Paramount+. Freshman Clarice‘s second season will stream exclusively on Paramount+. Reps for the streamer and CBS Studios, which produces both series, declined comment.
Already seen with the moves of A.P. Bio from NBC to Peacock, Search Party from TBS to HBO Max and Younger from TV land to Paramount+, broadcast/basic cable series, owned or co-owned by the net’s parent company,...

Clarice Episode 9
Clarice episode 9, “Silence is Purgatory,” offers a taste of temporary hell by exploring the connections of the show’s past and getting blocked from forward movement. The team is finally looking into the links between the River Murders and Alastor Pharmaceuticals. The company’s drug Reprisol is responsible for multiple cases of babies born with birth defects, and their well-connected attorney Joe Hudland (Raoul Bhaneja) keeps someone on the payroll just to kill anyone who steps forward.
“Silence is Purgatory” opens in the midst of the pre-shoe-leather phase of the investigation. The ViCAP team is working in the basement, out of sight from the prying eyes of the Bureau. They can’t even see each other that well. Even several levels beneath the FBI offices, behind closed doors, the agents are apparently still too wary to turn on the overhead lights. It makes...

Clarice Episode 7
Clarice, episode 7, “Ugly Truth,” is a monster-of-the-week exploration of a cold case procedural. It also moves the overall arc along as true ugliness is found within. “Some monster killed two little kids,” Ardelia Mapp (Devyn Tyler) says. The episode opens with a hideous image, foreshadowed and cinematically darkened by the growing buzz of a swarm of flies.
The opening shot is quite masterful. It takes a while for the idea to register that flies are drawn to dead things until just a moment before we see what died. The flies should be given credit, as they will continue to recur as both a character and mood-setter over the course of the early investigation. Clarice routinely plays with forced perspective and stalled chronology to move the inner story. The camera-work goes into overtime this episode as clues, details and emotional states are captured through the shifting flow of time.

In this exclusive clip from tonight, April 1's all-new Clarice, Agent Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds) is roped into an awkward dinner with U.S. Attorney General Ruth Martin (Jayne Atkinson) and her daughter Catherine (Marnee Carpenter). Clarice Episode 4
Clarice, episode 4, “You Can’t Rule Me,” is a misnomer. Unlike its source material, The Silence of the Lambs, it plays by a lot of rules. Agent Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds), and the ViCAP unit she works at under Deputy Assistant Attorney General Paul Krendler (Michael Cudlitz) are under investigation for a regulation infraction. A witness died on their watch. The thing which raises the episode, however, is something we didn’t see coming, though it follows the rules.
Right after the spiel about what happened previously on Clarice, the head investigating agent, Krendler’s Bureau rival, Sa Anthony Herman (David Hewlett), goes through it again in the form of an accusation. To hammer the point home, autopsy scenes are intercut where we can see and, much more importantly, hear limbs being sawed through. It’s an effective opening which brings a very...

Clarice Episode 3
Clarice, episode 3, “Are You Alright?,” almost allows Agent Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds) to overcome the typecasting of her role in the events in the film The Silence of the Lambs. The federal cop practically changes the venue by sheer force of will, as if she could burn the idea of a serial killer from the network series. Sadly, her flame is still attracting too many moths.
The episode again begins in the therapist’s office, so we know the scene will be brief. Both the patient and the doctor appear to be sparring rather than psychoanalyzing. Every sentence is a game of chicken, and it begins to feel more like an interrogation than a session. What makes it interesting are the cuts, which bring doubt to the proceedings. Is Clarice being paranoid? Yes, of course, but that doesn’t mean no one’s after her.

Clarice Episode 2
Clarice episode 2, “Ghosts of Highway 20,” takes the series further from The Silence of the Lambs, and deeper into federal cop procedural territory. FBI Agent Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds) went rogue at the end of the debut episode, “breaking the chain of command” and telling the press that an apprehended suspect just might not be a serial killer, but part of something larger. Now she is waiting for repercussions.
Clarice is already doing penance as the episode opens, counting off pushups to metal music. Pushups are a military punishment for rookie infractions and, back in the ‘90s, heavy metal music was blasted at hostile prisoners of war. To further distance themselves, the Vicap squad gets deployed to Tennessee. Starling’s superior officer, Deputy Assistant Attorney General Paul Krendler (Michael Cudlitz), only called her up there to keep an eye on her.
This is not a serial killer situation.
