In the first half of the 20th century, futuristic fiction often focused on shining cities with amazing spires and flying cars but, in this uncertain and faithless age, the utopian dream has faded away.
Instead we have dystopian nightmares of armageddon and, often, a scorched earth dominated by disease, aliens, machines, vampires, zombies or other horrors.
Tapping into this trope of man's fight for survival in a razed world is the upcoming British indie thriller Island, directed by London-born filmmaker Rehan Malik and co-written by Malik and Leon Hady.
Billed as a modern-day Lord of the Flies, it is set during a nuclear disaster. A group of students are trapped in a school and while some desire to build a new society, others attempt to subvert the situation for their own purposes.
From studio European Broadcast Ltd, this film-noir thriller, now in post-production, stars a young British cast including Donald Bentley,...

Actor Thomas James Longley, star of the 2010 teen slasher 'Sparrow', has reportedly left the cast of found-footage style indie flick 'Hayze'. Produced by UK company Birmingham to Blackpool and headed by James Layton (director of 2010's WebKam) the film was expected to shoot on location in Birmingham throughout March and April. After problems with the script and alleged multiple cast line-up changes, the film is said to have now moved away from production and back into the stages of early development. Longley was to play the role of lead character Thomas Vinterburg, but has since removed himself from the project....

Sparrow Movie PosterThe Polish shot, campers-in-the-woods film Sparrow now has a blood red poster, with a tagline. The lines on the graphic read: "If you go down to the woods today you're sure of a big surprise." The teaser seems to echo that, as six friends find a stalker and a machete instead of campfires, ghost stories, and natural landscapes. This film has set a goal of releasing in 2010, possibly September, and this independent film hopes to bring a unique take to the cliche of campers being slaughtered in the woods theme. All the available info', including a second poster - showing the killer, is below.
The synopsis for Sparrow here:
"Six teenage friends, Matt, Cindy, Kirsty, Duncan, Sitcom, and Dawn set off on a camping trip in the forest. However ‘Camp Happy Dreams’ turns out to be ‘Camp Nightmare’ as legend states it’s the site of a presumed historic murder.
