David Yates’s Pain Hustlers puffs itself up as a dynamic epic about the American dream but ends up glorifying some truly grotesque characters. Wells Tower’s script pulls loosely from Evan Hughes’s book about how executives at pharmaceutical company Insys Therapeutics were convicted in 2019 of conspiring to bribe doctors to overprescribe the fentanyl spray Subsys. The story has every ingredient for gripping melodrama: greed, timeliness, money, drugs, death, betrayal, and an Icarus-like fall. Thomas Jennings’s Frontline episode “Opioids, Inc.” and the second part of Alex Gibney’s The Crime of the Century have already turned the sordid tale into powerful, infuriating nonfiction. But in the course of fictionalizing the Insys story, Yates and Tower lose sight of what made it compelling to begin with.
Though ostensibly about the 2010s’ epidemic of synthetic opioid overdoses, Pain Hustlers really hangs its story on the oh-so American grit and determination...

Editor’s note: This review was originally published at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. Netflix releases the film on its streaming platform on Friday, October 27.
A smirking (and heavily fictionalized) rise-and-fall story of American greed that aspires to do for fentanyl what “The Wolf of Wall Street” did for Steve Madden, Netflix’s seriocomic “Pain Hustlers” is the first magic and/or Tarzan-free movie that “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” maestro David Yates has directed since 1998’s “The Tichborne Clarinet.” On paper, that sound like a combination of tone, subject matter, and storyteller that probably shouldn’t work. On screen, it absolutely doesn’t.
The problem with “Pain Hustlers” isn’t that its approach to the opioid crisis feels glib (it does), or that Yates keeps digitally inserting Dobby the elf into scenes of pharmaceutical sales reps pushing their latest drugs on morally flexible doctors (he doesn’t...

Most of the movies we’ve enjoyed over the last hundred years consist of 24 frames per second, but we’ve seen directors experiment with a high-frame-rate more and more. One director who has pushed Hfr to its limits is Ang Lee, who shot his last two movies, Billy Lynn’s Halftime Walk and Gemini Man, at 120fps. When it was announced that Ang Lee would be directing a Bruce Lee movie, many expected that he would once again shoot the film at 120fps; after all, Bruce Lee was known for his lightning-fast moves, which a traditional camera could barely pick up. Our own Chris Bumbray recently spoke with Ang Lee about the upcoming re-release of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, where the director revealed that he will not be shooting the Bruce Lee movie in Hfr.

Mason Lee, the son of famed filmmaker Ang Lee, will play Bruce Lee in a forthcoming film of the same name for Sony’s 3000 Pictures. Ang will direct the project from a script written by Dan Futterman. Futterman is taking over scripting duties after Jean Castelli, Alex Law, Mabel Cheung, and Wells Tower penned previous versions of the story.
It’s challenging to overestimate Lee’s astronomical impact on the martial arts film genre. Already a star in Asia, Bruce Lee’s Enter the Dragon catapulted his star into the stratosphere in the West. Had he lived beyond the age of 32, Lee would have achieved the success of actors like Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Donnie Yen, and more. Still, Lee is a household name despite his early passing, and few martial artists have risen to his level of notoriety since. Lee’s death was labeled “death by misadventure” by authorities,...

Three Lees are better than one. Legendary director Ang Lee will direct his son Mason Lee in “Bruce Lee,” a biopic about the life and career of the iconic martial artist and movie star, IndieWire has confirmed.
Lee is set to direct the film for Sony’s 3000 Pictures banner, with a script written by Dan Futterman, best known for his work on the Oscar-nominated films “Capote” and “Foxcatcher.” Futterman’s script is the latest in a long line of scripts written for a potential biopic on the “Enter the Dragon” star. Past versions were written by Jean Castelli, Alex Law and Mabel Cheung, and Wells Tower.

We find the remnants of our band stalking the pits of the Sinspire, patiently and calculatingly ascending lady luck’s ladder in Lynch’s Monte Carlo, the city-state Tal Verrar, marked on any map as the destination for the apex of high society and high stakes. The absurdity of the back in-saddle starting point exhibits the author’s greatest strength, his decisions on how to pace a novel. As Deadline reported late yesterday, Alec Baldwin has signed on as the star and executive producer of HBO's as-yet-untitled political drama. In the series, written by the award-winning Wells Tower, Baldwin plays Joe Byrne, an affluent real estate developer thrust into the spotlight when he becomes the mayor of New York City. Described by Deadline's Mike Fleming as an effort to "hit the tone of the lightest and most entertaining episodes of 'The Sopranos'," the series sounds like fresh competition for Netflix's "House of Cards," CBS' "The Good Wife," and ABC's "Scandal." For now, though, HBO, Baldwin, and Baldwin's co-executive producer, Cary Brokaw, have yet to decide on which director will helm the pilot. Toh! offers a few options for the premium network to consider: David Fincher David Fincher may have convinced himself that "The Girl Who Played with Fire," his follow up to "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,...

Alec Baldwin hasn't been a regular fixture on TV since 30 Rock went off the air in 2013. But Deadline reports he's set to make a comeback in a new untitled HBO series, where he'll play an NYC mayor named Joe Byrne, who's described as "a billionaire real estate developer philanthropist and celebrated socialite" thrown into NYC politics when "tragedy strikes the incumbent mayor and he is drafted to replace him." The show will be written by noted New Yorker "20 Under 40" writer Wells Tower. No word on how clear or unclear the dishwasher will be at his Gracie Mansion.

Alec Baldwin is headed back to TV. The 30 Rock veteran is set to star as a billionaire real estate developer, divorced father, philanthropist, society fixture and celebrated libertine who unexpectedly becomes mayor of New York City. After a heated bidding war, the hourlong entry has landed in development with a production commitment at HBO. Baldwin, who has been vocal about his own political ambitions in the past, will serve as an executive producer should it move forward. I'll say this much for him: Alec Baldwin is keeping pretty busy these days. Not only is the "30 Rock" actor in talks to join the Christopher McQuarrie-directed "Mission: Impossible 5" as the head of the CIA, he's also circling the previously-announced football concussion movie starring Will Smith, according to a report today over at Deadline. His prospective role in the latter film is unknown at this time. On the TV side, meanwhile, Baldwin is currently developing a show in which he'd play a Rob Ford-esque mayor of New York City (Ford of course being the infamous Toronto mayor whose erratic public behavior set off a media firestorm last year). Written by Wells Tower and executive-produced by Baldwin, the budding project is an NBC Productions property but will be developed as a one-hour cable series. Though his frequent public outbursts have tended to obscure his career endeavors as of late,...

Daniel Radcliffe is having a go at a Dave Eggers' adaptation, "You Shall Know Our Velocity." Radcliffe will star as the the bookish Will, opposite a yet uncast co-lead to play Will's more gregarious and skirt-chasing buddy Hand, who embark on worldwide excursion to give the $32,000 insurance fallout from their friend's death to those in dire need. Peter Sollett ("Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist," "Raising Victor Vargas") is at the helm, with production eyeing a start next spring. Wells Tower penned the adaptation. The film marks Radcliffe's sixth since he wrapped his decade-long, adolescence-spanning "Harry Potter" franchise: 2012's horror hit "The Woman in Black": Beat generation mystery drama "Kill Your Darlings"; "What If," an indie rom-com opposite Zoe Kazan originally titled "The F Word"; "Horns," where Radcliffe plays a man who sprouts horns in the aftermath of his girlfriend's death; and "Frankenstein," where Radcliffe plays the bumbling Igor...

"The Old Man at Burning Man" by Wells Tower (GQ): The author takes his father to a mega-rave in the Nevada desert, and it's about as weird as you'd expect. "Capote Classic In Cold Blood Tainted by Long-Lost Files" by Kevin Helliker (Wall Street Journal): Newly uncovered documents from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation deal another blow to Truman Capote's claim that his seminal nonfiction book was "immaculately factual."
