Demons, witches, and devils have been around in religion and life for nearly as long as people have been around. This extends into movies as since the very beginning of motion pictures, we have attempted to capture the fears of these types of fears on film in a number of ways. Most of the media we see on it is built out from existing ideas to create a new narrative that looks to capture the interests of the general public enough to make a profit or base a movie on it. While many people know both the book and movie of The Exorcist, something like The Rite (watch it Here) that more or less came and went in the early 2010s proves that it also has an interesting story to tell. Whether or not you believe in the religious supernatural events found in either the book or the movie, it...

The Rite is jumping out onto Blu-ray and DVD in a few days and we’ve managed to tie down Matt Baglio, the author of the original book The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcism, and ask him about his involvement with the film and his experiences with the exorcism class which inspired the project.
Baglio attended the class whilst working as a journalist in Rome and the experience was compounded by his relationship with Californian parish priest Father Gary Thomas whom Baglio shadowed as he went through the course and the result was The Rite – an examiniation of exorcism and religion in the 21st Century.
Here’s the interview,
Was it a journalistic instinct to attend the Exorcism class? Or were there any spiritual questions you hoped to address?
In the beginning it was strictly journalistic. I heard about this course being offered at a university that...

The Film:
Based on a 2009 book called The Making of a Modern Exorcist by Matt Baglio, The Rite tackles exorcism in the least theatrical of ways. As Fr. Lucas (Anthony Hopkins) says during an exorcism: “What were you expecting? Spinning heads and pea soup?” But that’s The Rite‘s downfall. It’s fairly average in these terms of cinematic boos we’ve now been accustomed too, in thanks to The Exorcist and its zillion clones.
Mikael Håfström tries to make the most out of a film that’s idea is more interesting theologically than cinematic. The Rite is moody and well-acted, even if Hopkins overshadows the film’s lead, newcomer Colin O’Donoghue. Doubt is religion’s old friend. Without doubt, we wouldn’t seek the truth, either spiritually or logically, which makes for an interesting if not well-worn angle for an exorcism film. It’s no wonder Christian websites are praising the film.

Although it doesn.t come close to the scares provided by The Exorcist or even the moderate chills provided by The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Rite does manage to give a goose bump or two thanks to the performance from Anthony Hopkins and the use of its Rome setting. Based on Matt Baglio's book The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist, The Rite was directed by Mikael Håfström (1408 and the underappreciated Derailed) and sees Hopkins joined by Colin O'Donoghue, Alice Braga, Ciarán Hinds, Toby Jones, Maria Grazia Cucinotta, and Marta Gastini. It also features a chilling performance from Rutger Hauer (who manages to be the creepiest part of the movie without even really seeming to try).

There was a time when a good "inspired by true events" film would be able to pull me in, and despite the idea that "true" is used to mean that nothing can be proven, and the basis in reality is "some guy said this happened," they were often fairly entertaining movies.
These are generally films about aliens, major government conspiracies, and otherwise things that people look at you funny if you start talking like they are "true." Exorcism, and or demonic possession would be another prime example, and now we have The Rite.
I tend to like these movies a little more than most (certainly most critics), basically because, who cares? It's an excuse to have a film that hopefully builds some tension, delivers a fair amount of entertainment value, and if we start the discussion with things that are completely fictional, or tie them to some "true" events, what's the difference?...

Anthony Hopkins stars as a senior Vatican exorcist in The Rite, charged with overseeing the education of a young American seminarian chosen to study the ancient rite of casting out devils. Hopkins.s character teaches him by example allowing the young man to watch and share the truths and realities of the mysterious practice. The seminarian is doubtful of the veracity of what he.s seeing and becomes increasingly alarmed when it appears his teacher is losing his grip on reality, even as he loses his own faith. The film is based in part on American journalist Matt Baglio.s book .The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist.. Monsters and Critics spoke to Baglio from his home in Rome,...

Even Anthony Hopkins in fine scenery-eating form can't save this pompous demonic possession flick based on 'true events'
This cornball tale of demonic possession is "inspired by true events", "suggested by" a book by Matt Baglio and almost certainly prompted by back-to-back viewings of The Exorcist and the second Da Vinci Code movie. The candles are guttering and the darkened corridors ring with hollow laughter. Then along comes Sir Anthony Hopkins as Father Lucas, a Jesuit priest turned vessel of Satan, who starts beating children on the steps of the palazzo and hanging Jesus upside-down. Hopkins' wild ham acting helps raise the deadening atmosphere and prick the mood of pomposity. What he can't do, sadly, is save his co-star. Colin O'Donoghue's performance as the hunky American sceptic is so listless, ill at ease and lacking in authority that it lends a curious poignancy to his inevitable crisis-of-faith during the final exorcism.

Exorcists are back. There has been a slew of flicks over the past few years that have seen Satan and Christ’s soldiers repossess the silver screen for epic battles to condemn/save souls. Next up is Mikael Håfström’s The Rite, based on a true story (spooky).
In this UK exclusive, the director talks about the ins and outs of making a horror film, tackling the Exorcist and working with the legendary Anthony Hopkins. The Rite opens in the UK from 25th February.
Do your personal beliefs enter into how you approach this material? Did you have to come to terms with your own beliefs in order to be faithful to what the story is representing?
Mikael Håfström: Not to become faithful for the story, but I think doing a film about this subject matter and these questions definitely triggers you to ask yourself things, without a doubt.

Anthony Hopkins is an exorcist, but one with a bit of a problem. Ron checks out The Rite...
Sometimes, you have a calling. Sometimes, you're born into the family business. Michael Kovak (Colin O'Donoghue) is dealing with a bit of both. He's the son of an undertaker, and has the family funeral home to run, if he so chooses. Otherwise, if he doesn't want to be a mortician, he can follow the other family vocation and become a priest. Spending his whole life wrist-deep in corpses doesn't sound appealing, so Michael takes up the collar and heads off to seminary.
The only problem with this whole line of work is that Michael doesn't exactly believe in God or want to be a Catholic priest. His initial plan, to attend four years of college on Rome's dime, doesn't work out so well when he is told by his advisor that...

Based on the book by Matt Baglio, The Rite is exactly what you would expect from another film about exorcism. The advantage of this film is that it is based on the factual tale of Rev. Gary Thomas, changed to Michael Kovak for the film. I'll use the term factual lightly as it really is up to the viewer to determine what their belief on the entire matter is....
Now, in any film dealing with exorcism we always seem to get the same story. Someone has no faith, witnesses an exorcism, now they have faith. It seems like pretty typical territory and there's no surprises here. Even knowing exactly where the story is going from the first moment didn't change how much I enjoyed the film. Hell, (no pun intended) even the obvious Hollywood ending didn't ruin the movie for me.

The Rite
Directed by Mikael Hafstrom
Starring Anthony Hopkins, Colin O’Donoghue, Marta Gastini
Rated PG-13
Release date: January 28, 2011
An excessively verbose film, The Rite clumsily observes exorcism as being either a satanic occurrence or a descendant of a psychological one that can warrant scientific explanations. It is the credulous of one belief always trying to sway and convince the incredulous of the other belief. We’ve seen the skeptic and the believer clash numerous times before in cinema, and this film continues the redundancy of such an argument.
In a weird by yet mildly surprising way, The Rite, directed by 1408 director Mikael Hafstrom and adapted from a true story based on Matt Baglio’s book The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist, relies heavily on such intense arguments rather than having a clinging dependence on the unpleasant and abhorrent images that tend to go along with films depicting exorcisms.

The Rite starts out interestingly enough, following a young man who enters the priesthood, questioning his faith, but it soon goes straight downhill. The film appears to be an examination of religion vs. science, but ends up a cliched horror fest without much substance.
Based on the book The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist by journalist Matt Baglio, the film follows Michael Kovak (Colin O'Donoghue), a young man who begrudgingly enters the seminary. His spiritual leader urges the young priest to take a class on exorcism in Rome to find inspiration and faith. In Rome, he meets Rev. Lucas Trevant (Anthony Hopkins), an exorcist, who sets out to prove to Kovak that the devil exists and exorcisms are real.

"What were you expecting, spinning heads? Pea soup?," Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins) asks of both his young liege (Colin O'Donoghue) and the audience for 'The Rite,' which is no 'Exorcist' and it knows it. Heck, it even pales in comparison to 2010's 'The Last Exorcism' when it comes to weighing a skeptic's reasoning against displays of supernatural mischief. But for a good while, it's got a handsome sheen in its favor and it dares to evoke something resembling a nuanced performance out of Hopkins, before having him succumb to his recent scenery-chewing habits.
This movie is proudly "inspired by true events," of course; Michael Petroni's screenplay was "suggested" by reporter Matt Baglio's book, so make of that what you will. "What did you expect? Spinning heads? Pea soup?" Anthony Hopkins as Father Lucas asks Michael Kovak (Colin O'Donoghue), a four year seminary student at the Vatican whose doubt of the existence of God and the Devil has him running from his pursuit of the priesthood. In his attempt to leave Michael never knew he'd end up here, in the hands of a veteran exorcist so used to the craft he's not against answering his cell phone in the middle of a demon removal session, "I'm sorry, I'm in the middle of something."
Such theatrics and a blase approach to exorcisms won't help in subsiding Michael's doubt of the Devil's existence. Fortunately for this film's narrative,...

The new Anthony Hopkins exorcism thriller The Rite may be a work of fiction, but it was inspired by the real life experiences of Father Gary Thomas, an American priest who studied under a master exorcist in Rome and became the subject of Matt Baglio's book The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist. Naturally, Movieline seized the chance to ask the energetic Father Gary to play film critic and weigh in on eight possession horror classics, from The Exorcist to Paranormal Activity to Tim Burton's classic comedy about a lovable "bio-exorcist."...

The cast and crew of Sir Anthony Hopkins' scary new movie The Rite had extra help on set from a real life exorcist, whose story inspired the thriller.
The movie focuses on a disillusioned young priest, played by Colin O'Donoghue, who finds his true calling after training to perform exorcisms. The film is based on the life of Father Gary Thomas, whose story was told in Matt Baglio's book The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist.
Thomas, who works at a parish in Saratoga, California, spent a week in June on the set of the movie in Budapest, Hungary, acting as an adviser to director Mikael Hafstrom.
He admits he's pleased with the finished film and hopes audiences will find the story inspiring, rather than frightening.
Thomas tells Mercurynews.com, "There's nothing in the movie I'm ashamed of. You walk out of there with a sense of hope... I just want to do what I can to inform. I'm not offended if someone doesn't believe it. What I've described, I've seen."...

One can argue that Anthony Hopkins, nineteen years after winning an Academy Award for his memorable turn as Hannibal Lecter in "The Silence of the Lambs," could not shake off the image of his iconic serial killer portrayal.
In the new thriller "The Rite," Hopkins plays a legendary priest who has performed thousands of exorcisms. Look closely in his performance, and you can see an evil cannibal glint in his eyes.
Silencing demons is the main subject of the movie. The first part of the film introduces us to Michael Kovak (Colin O'Donoghue), an American student who is sent to study exorcism at the Vatican. He has doubts not only about the controversial practice, he also questions his own faith.
Things get really interesting when Michael meets Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins). As the apprentice of the exorcist, Michael witnesses Lucas' unconventional way of casting out demons.

Ever since The Exorcist became a worldwide phenomenon in 1973, I've been a sucker for exorcism movies. They don't even have to be good exorcism movies. All I need is a demon, a priest and a woman in a bad mood (and, yes, it's almost always a female who's possessed, but that's a whole different article). So, when I started seeing commercials for The Rite, I became way too excited.
Starring Anthony Hopkins, Ciarán Hinds, Toby Jones, Alice Braga and Colin O’Donoghue, The Rite seems to be the rare movie that will allow a man to be possessed. Plot points are hard to come by, but it appears that what we have here is a version of The Exorcist with a demon-infested Father Merrin and a younger Father Karras, still grappling with his beliefs, forced to do the deed. Needless to say, it sounds awesome to me.

Exorcism flicks are a dime a dozen these days, though Mikael Hafstrom’s forthcoming supernatural thriller “The Rite” has a little something extra going for it. The film, which is based on author Matt Baglio’s novel “The Making of a Modern Day Exorcist”, is more of a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to cure the demonically possessed than a traditional, run-of-the-mill exorcism flick. Tonight while working on horror articles and watching the Sugar Bowl in the background I glanced up and noticed the third spot for The Rite playing during a commercial.
Even though I had the sound down and was jamming to some tunes, the preview seemed pretty cool...then I was distracted by the fact that my Christmas tree was still up (note to self; gotta take that down soon).
Anyway, I thought about checking out YouTube in order to see if I could track down the trailer, and then something magical happened; a post about the spot came across my Twitter feed and vuala, HorrorNews.net already uploaded the spot to their Daily Motion page.

And now there is a new film poster for the film from either New Line Cinemas, or Warner Bros. Entertainment, or both.
