If this morning’s Academy Awards announcement proved anything, it is never bet against Diane Warren in your Oscar pool. Or John Williams.
Warren’s 15th nomination in the Best Song category (with no wins but an Honorary Oscar to show for it) and Williams’ 54th overall in music categories were the most predictable of a mostly predictable Oscar nomination list. The surprise would be if either of them were not nominated in a year in which they had eligible work. For Warren, it’s “The Fire Inside” from Flamin’ Hot, and for Williams it is Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, marking the fourth Indy movie among his noms.

Three films scored a double-digit number of Oscar nominations on Tuesday morning — Universal’s Oppenheimer (13, one shy of the all-time record shared by All About Eve, Titanic and La La Land), Searchlight’s Poor Things (11) and Apple’s Killers of the Flower Moon (10) — a rare feat. But for many, those impressive showings were overshadowed by the lack of directing and lead actress nominations for Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, respectively, of Warner Bros.’ Barbie.
Though those categories reflect the preferences of only the directors branch (less than 6 percent of the full Academy) and the actors branch (just over 13 percent), and though Gerwig and Robbie are nominated in other categories (for writing and producing), and though Barbie did receive eight nominations (including best picture), the optics of excluding the women most responsible for a critically acclaimed film that became the biggest blockbuster of 2023 from the directing and lead actress categories are not good.

Jonathan Glazer’s unusual Holocaust film The Zone Of Interest opens in four theaters in New York and LA today as Cord Jefferson’s satirical comedy American Fiction debuts in seven, the latest trenchant specialty offerings in a fall market full of strong titles as year-end approaches and the awards season clicks into high gear after Golden Globe nominations this week.
From A24, The Zone of Interest premiered at Cannes (Deadline review here), winning the Grand Prix, and the Fipresci Prize. The (actual) commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel) and his wife Hedwig strive to build a dream life for their growing family in a lovely villa and garden whose back wall abuts the concentration camp. The film opens with the family picnicking and frolicking on a lush riverbank, then trekking happily home.

The fact that Warners’ Barbie so dominated the Critics Choice Award nominations that were announced on Wednesday morning — it landed a record 18 noms, five more than the next-highest scorers, Universal’s Oppenheimer and Searchlight’s Poor Things, which had 13 each — is obviously very interesting. But does it mean that Barbie is truly that much more popular among Cca members than anything else, or is it just more reflective of the fact that there are categories at this awards show that don’t exist elsewhere but inherently benefit Barbie (e.g. best comedy, best young actor/actress, a best song category without a cap on noms from one film, etc.)? Only time will tell.
However, several specific Critics Choice noms, or lack thereof, are more obviously significant.
In the best picture category, two of the three non-English-language films that have performed extremely well this season — all three earned best drama picture...

The first Golden Globe Award nominations issued by the new Golden Globes organization — an overhaul of the late Hollywood Foreign Press Association, with a lot of new members, new rules and a new broadcasting partner in CBS — were issued early Monday morning, and you know what? They’re pretty unobjectionable.
Yes, the categories are larger than they used to be, expanding from five to six slots, which certainly helps to make more stakeholders happy on a morning like this — but also increases the possibility of more bizarre nominees of the sort the HFPA was famous for, like Burlesque, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen and The Tourist. And yet, with only a couple of exceptions — a best musical/comedy actress nom for Jennifer Lawrence’s turn in the summer rom-com No Hard Feelings and a best original song nom for a Bruce Springsteen song from a film that I didn’t even remember existed,...

Sandra Hüller doesn’t stand on protocol.
“Oh, it’s you,” she says, slipping quickly into the informal German “Du” when she recognizes me. “Can you give me five minutes? I just have to dump my shopping and make sure the dog’s Ok.”
We’re meeting early at a designer hotel in Cologne, Germany, a spot favored by visiting film crews for its proximity to the train station — just across the street — and its relative anonymity. Hüller, dressed in bell-bottoms and sneakers, a jean jacket thrown over a plain white T-shirt and with no makeup, has the morning off after an outdoor shoot for her next film was canceled due to a thunderstorm. She gets her dog sorted with a walker — more on the dog later — and sits down to talk.

People have been arguing the “who was comics’ first costumed hero” question for decades. Some feel it was Mandrake the Magician, by Lee Falk and Phil Davis (1934), others cite the truly obscure Red Knight created by John Welch and Jack McGuire, and still others prefer to credit E.C. Segar’s Popeye (1929). But I think it’s safe to say that most comics fans and scholars bestow that honor upon The Phantom, created by Lee Falk and Ray Moore 80 years ago this past week.
Neither Mandrake nor Popeye are “costumed heroes.” They perform their feats of daring in their regular work clothes. Whereas the Red Knight got his start in 1934 as a guy named Bullet Benton, he did not don the Red Knight costume and, therefore, the costumed hero persona until April of 1940. I suspect somebody at the Register and Tribune Syndicate took a gander at the McClure Syndicate’s success with Superman.

Bluetista is out of our lives for now. That’s a good thing. The Shield is no more. That’s a bad thing. RyBaxel lost on SmackDown. That’s an indifferent thing. Well, overall it was a pretty notable week in WWE that set up some big storylines for the next few months. We watched Seth Rollins turn heel, Rusev receiving a nice medal that was possibly made of delicious chocolate, and saw Hornswoggle wear a wig. Don’t bother going outside this summer when you have entertainment like that!
With ratings alarmingly low the past few weeks, Vince had to shake things up. Time will tell if he made the right call, but continuing Evolution vs. Shield may end up being a losing battle no matter what was done. As of right now, Tna is in a period of disarray. Wrestlers, including big time stars like Rob Van Dam and Mr Anderson, are going by the wayside, and plans of introducing Bellator’s Mma stars to the program backfired massively when Bellator took them off the show.
And now, more and more Tna wrestlers are being linked with a jump to the big dogs in the yard. Hulk Hogan is just one of many rumoured to be signing for the WWE in the near future. One in particular has been speculated about ever since details of his expiring contract broke on the internet…Aj Styles.
Aj Styles, as far as I’m concerned, is Mr. Tna. Since day one, he’s been with the company and his career has been like a massive yoyo. Constantly, Aj has been in and out of the main event picture at the company in the Asylum,...

Two of our favorite horror shows are already casting for next season, with two people added each to Dexter and True Blood.
First up, True Blood has added two young women to the cast in Amelie Rose Blaire and Jurnee Smollett (our name of the week!)!
Smollett, who charmed my heart on Friday Night Lights (and has been on The Defenders, Cosby, Full House and a bevy of other TV shows), will play Nicole, “a do-gooder who possesses the rosy outlook of someone that life hasn’t beaten down yet. She’s not concerned with money and more concerned with the doing what’s right.”
Blaire will be Willa, the daughter of the new Louisiana governor, played by newcomer Arliss Howard.
HBO’s competitor, Showtime, has also added two new names to its premier show, Dexter. British actress Charlotte Rampling and Sean Patrick Flanery join the cast.

Another day, another schedule for the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con. Next up is Day 3 - Saturday, July 14th - which is just about as chock-full of events for the horror crowd as Friday the 13th!
As always, our focus is the horror panels, but included are a few others that we think will be of interest as well. Remember that times and participants are subject to change so keep your eyes on the official Sdcc site for updates. And hopefully they'll provide a fix soon for the Sdcc smartphone app - in years past it's been extremely helpful.

"Integrity Check" put the cops of Southland on display, as the Lapd used a film crew to try and garner some good PR. In the end, though, it was the film crew's integrity I found questionable.
Tang Throws a Tackle. For a petite woman, Tang sure knew how to make a tackle. Unfortunately for the suspect, the knife was facing the wrong way when she fell. Should Tang have tackled her, shot her, tazed her or just waited to see how it all played out?
There was plenty of second guessing but Tang did what she thought was right. When a suspect has a weapon, there's no way to guarantee that no one will get hurt no matter what your response.
A Badge Bunny Threesome? Ben and Sammy's day started off all laughs. Ben woke up with not one, but two badge bunnies, although Sammy jibed that he had his beer goggles on this time.
