Spoilers are hard to avoid for the second round of Welcome to Wrexham, the engaging FX series about the fate of a historic football club in northern Wales purchased by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds (of the Deadpool franchise) and Rob McElhenney (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia). While famously losing a couple of key games that ended Season 1, the Red Dragons thrillingly won promotion back to the English Football League in April after a 15-year drought — the perfect capper for these new episodes. (Credit: Getty Images) “Anyone who’s been following the Wrexham story will have seen that we got promoted,” says Humphrey Ker, the McElhenney-Reynolds pal who serves as the club’s executive director. (The comic actor also occasionally appears as Tall Paul opposite McElhenney on Apple TV+’s Mythic Quest.) “I think a big theme that will be stressed will be the challenge we faced in terms of expectations.

As ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” continues to be hailed as a revelatory comedy series that puts classic networks back on the TV awards map, attention should also be paid to the other great non-streaming sitcoms of its age. Take, for instance, “American Auto,” which, after two strong seasons, has proven a worthy successor to past NBC workplace comedies like “The Office” and “Superstore.” At a time when increasingly dark dramedies dominate much of the television landscape, it’s important to keep part of the spotlight on feel-good laffers, and “American Auto” stands as proof that there is more than one such model on the lot.
“American Auto” primarily takes place in the Detroit corporate offices of fictional car company Payne Motors, which has recently fallen under the control of ill-equipped CEO Katherine Hastings (a perfectly cast Ana Gasteyer). With each passing episode, her central goal of at least keeping pace...

NBC has yet to make decisions about three of its comedies.
American Auto, Grand Crew and Young Rock all remain on the bubble after the network unveiled its fall schedule with these three shows absent from fall and midseason.
NBC said “decisions are yet to be made” on the trio.
American Auto comes from Superstore creator Justin Spitzer. The series premiered its second season in January and it ended its 13-episode run in April.
Starring Ana Gasteyer, Harriet Dyer and Jon Barinholtz, American Auto hails from Spitzer and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment. Written by Spitzer, American Auto is set at the headquarters of a major American automotive company in Detroit, where a floundering group of executives try to rediscover the company identity amidst a rapidly changing industry.
Harriet Dyer, Humphrey Ker, Michael B. Washington, Tye White and X Mayo also star.
Spitzer executive produces via his Spitzer Holding Company with Kapital’s Kaplan.

Hackers seem to be getting the upper hand more and more these days and the fictitious Payne Motors on NBC’s “American Auto” is no exception. In the episode that airs Tuesday, the automaker’s servers get hacked, causing chaos that gets even crazier when Wesley is locked out of his bank account “forever” and Katherine (Ana Gasteyer) learns they accessed some naughty photos of hers.
Katherine and the team are told the company’s server was hacked and the culprits got a small amount of data. To get back on track, everything has to go offline, causing pandemonium to erupt. Check out the exclusive clip above.
“I doubt it’s exactly ‘easy’ for anyone to hack a major corporation like this, but we usually only become aware that someone was trying to hack us when the hackers succeed,” executive producer Justin Spitzer told TheWrap. “Being in entertainment, we talked...

On August 24, FX premiered “Welcome to Wrexham,” a documentary series that follows actors Rob McElhenney (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) and Ryan Reynolds (“Deadpool”) as they navigate running the 3rd oldest professional football club in the world. The docuseries tracks the dreams and worries of Wrexham, a working-class town in North Wales, UK, as two Hollywood stars take ownership of the town’s historic yet struggling football club, the Red Dragons.
With a freshness rating of 88 on Rotten Tomatoes, the consensus reads, “Plunking two famous funnymen into the unpredictable journey of a sports documentary, Welcome to Wrexham is a calculated gamble that pays off.” But what are some of the top critics saying?

“Welcome to Wrexham” is maybe the closest that a sports documentary has come to a chicken and egg question. Does the FX series exist because Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took a flyer on buying Wrexham Fc, a downtrodden Welsh soccer squad? Or was the possibility of “Welcome to Wrexham” a main reason for the purchase in the first place?
The fact that both answers seem plausible is never all that far from the show itself. McElhenney and Reynolds talk in early interviews about their elaborate pandemic purchase, a gambit made between social media buddies whose first in-person meeting is captured by these documentary cameras. They’re the marquee attraction in the charming opening episode, which gets as close to off-the-cuff and unguarded as press-savvy comedy stars get.
Before long, though, the pair have to embrace the fact that they’re mixing an entrepreneurial endeavor with some real-life human emotion hanging in the balance.

If you’re as online as I am, the premise of Welcome to Wrexham might bring to mind a Gif. Specifically, the one from Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle of Ryan Reynolds in surgical scrubs, asking: “But why?” Why did Reynolds and fellow movie/TV star Rob McElhenney decide to buy a fifth-tier (official designation, not my personal judgment) football team in Wales together? Why did they then decide to make a docuseries about it for FX?
Truth be told, after watching the five half-hour episodes sent to critics (of 18 total for the season), I still don’t have clear answers. Welcome to Wrexham is mostly concerned with delivering feel-good fluff, and that it delivers in big heaping piles. But cotton candy has its time and place too. If you’re in the mood for a bit of uncomplicated sweetness — and...

Yes, it is sort of like “Ted Lasso.” Except in the docuseries “Welcome to Wrexham,” the focus on the newbie football club coach pivots to focus on the Hollywood stars – “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and “Mythic Quest” creator and star Rob McElhenney and “Deadpool” star Ryan Reynolds – as they invest millions of dollars and become the joint owners of the Wrexham Dragons, the world’s third oldest professional association football team.

Comedian Humphrey Ker has shared Ryan Reynolds‘ reponse to being called a “c***” at the first Wrexham match he attended.
The Hollywood actor, 45, recently bought the football club with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney, and, in February 2022, took full control of the club.
The story of their £2m investment will be told in documentary series Welcome to Wrexham, which will be released on Disney Plus.
The pair have attended several matches, but according to comedian Ker, who they appointed Executive Director, fans have not always been nice.
In a new Reynolds and McElhenney interview with The Times, Ker revealed that he “had to explain” to the duo “that no matter how successful the team is, someone will come up to them and call them a c**”.
Ker added: “The first game they attended at Maidenhead they received abuse, and I think they actually enjoyed it.”

“American Auto” has been renewed for its second season at NBC.
From “Superstore” creator Justin Spitzer, Season 1 of “American Auto” debuted in December 2021. Katherine and her team of executives must work to adapt to the changing times or be sent to the junkyard.
Harriet Dyer plays Payne’s chief communication officer Sadie, Katherine’s right-hand woman who constantly saves Katherine from herself. She also struggles to fight her feelings for Jack (Tye White), a Payne assembly line worker she had a one night stand with who Katherine suddenly promoted to the corporate office, making him impossible to avoid. NBC has picked up a second season of comedy series American Auto, Deadline has learned. We hear the order is for 13 episodes.
The news is not surprising as the freshman from Superstore creator Justin Spitzer had been the clear front-runner for renewal among NBC’s current comedy series. More NBC pickups are expected to follow today. Yesterday, the network handed a series order to its comedy pilot Lopez vs. Lopez.
Cancellations/Renewals Scorecard: TV Shows Ended Or Continuing In 2021-22 Season
Starring Ana Gasteyer, Harriet Dyer and Jon Barinholtz, American Auto hails from Spitzer and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment. Chicago – Jon Barinholtz keeps on rolling. After having wrapped a six season run on NBC-tv’s “Superstore” portraying Marcus, he landed another role – with the same sitcom creator (Justin Spitzer) and network – as car industry executive Westey Payne in “American Auto,” which premiered last month. And all this as he co-created “Chicago Party Aunt” for Netflix.
As opposed to to “Superstore,” where the focus was on the store level employees, “American Auto” is a workplace comedy that takes place in the executive suite. Ana Gasteyer (“Saturday Night Live”) portrays Katherine, a hard charging just-appointed CEO of Payne Motors. Barinholtz as Wesley Payne is part of the family who owns the company, and they interact with put upon VP Sadie (Harriet Dyer), Dori (X Mayo), Cyrus (Michael Benjamin Washington) and newly promoted Jack (Tye White). The quick-witted sitcom takes place as the company is in transition.

ABC is basking in the primetime spotlight of the NFL as its coverage of the Los Angeles Rams-Arizona Cardinals game on Monday Night Football was the night’s top-rated program.
The Rams’ 30-23 victory earned a 1.5 demo rating in the adults 18-49 demographic and 6.69 million viewers, per Nielsen fast affiliates. However, numbers are set to rise as they usually do with major live events, like sports. ABC’s coverage was significantly behind NBC’s Sunday Night Football coverage the previous night.
Coming in second in the demo Monday was the latest episode of The Voice on NBC, the evening’s most-watched program among the broadcasters. Going up against both Mnf and The Voice was Fox’s Gordon Ramsay’s Road Trip and the CW’s All American.
Monday’s numbers marked season highs for the CW drama in both demo rating and viewership. Last night’s...

Coming off a five-year run as writer-producer on NBC’s The Office, Justin Spitzer in August 2013 sold another single-camera workplace comedy, American Auto to NBC, with a put pilot commitment. The script did not go to pilot, and Spitzer went on to create Superstore. After he stepped down as Superstore showrunner in summer 2019 to focus on development under his Universal TV overall deal, he took a new stab at American Auto, which was redeveloped and went to pilot — and then to series — at NBC.
The comedy, starring Ana Gasteyer, Jon Barinholtz, Harriet Dyer, Humphrey Ker, Michael B. Washington, Tye White and X Mayo, is set at the headquarters of a major American automotive company in Detroit, where a floundering group of executives try to rediscover the company identity amidst a rapidly changing industry.
