The new film from Johan Renck, efficiently titled Spaceman, offers two central conceits. The first: that a vessel en route to a cloud of purple dust, somewhere in the region of Venus, might be visited by a benevolent alien with the ability to guide a human through their own memories. The second: that the Czech Space Agency’s chief representatives, on earth and off, might be played by Isabella Rossellini and Adam Sandler. Besides directing the music video for David Bowie’s “Blackstar,” Renck is best-known for Craig Mazin’s TV show Chernobyl, on which he helmed all five episodes. With Spaceman Renck borrows that show’s aesthetic: the sickly green-and-yellow color palette, the retro-futurist Soviet designs, the stifling solemnity. One thing you won’t find in Chernobyl, however, is Hanuś: an arachnid with Paul Dano’s voice, a body the size of a labrador, and six unblinking eyes, each...

On Wednesday, Fremantle revealed that it had secured worldwide distribution rights, outside of German-speaking territories, to the premium fantasy drama “Hagen” — a working title — from Constantin Film. Variety spoke to Jan Ehlert, one of the producers on the show, and Jens Richter, CEO commercial and international at Fremantle, about why they backed the ambitious production, which is budgeted at around Euros 45 million ($48.8 million) and will be produced as a six-part series and a feature film for theatrical release.
“Hagen,” which is based on Wolfgang Hohlbein’s bestselling novel “Hagen von Tronje,” is a reimagining of the medieval “Nibelungen” folk saga. The story is considered to be one of the inspirations behind modern fantasies such as “Game of Thrones” and J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings.”

Enough with the winter gloom: Feel-good shows are about to take over TV market London Screenings, as distributors echo Russell Crowe’s Maximus iconic words: “Are you not entertained?”
“Most platforms are looking for entertaining shows. Escapism is a big thing,” says Fremantle International CEO Jens Richter.
“You want to take the audience somewhere else and make sure they forget about their reality for a minute. ‘We want to entertain you.’ That’s the headline, basically.”
Beta Group’s chief distribution officer Oliver Bachert agrees – in a world challenged by many conflicts, watching something “accessible and easy” feels more appealing than ever.
“We see things that are maybe not that ambitious, but they work as entertainment. A bit of blue sky helps us deal with everyday news. Even up north, Nordic Noir just got lighter.”
Crime and thrillers are still “major export genres,” notices Rachel Glaister of All3Media International, but...

Tales of Babylon, an Indie dark crime comedy by Pelayo De Lario, is a testament to why I love cinema. Pelayo de Lario is not yet an established name in the industry, but I have a feeling that it’s going to happen very soon. This movie is also a reason why I like British humor. Well, I’m not going to lie, British humor can be pretty disturbing and even very contextual, but it’s also quite eccentric and deadpan nonetheless. Perhaps the most accurate word to describe this form of humor would be ‘cheeky.’ Coming back to this movie, one can’t help but draw similarities between Martin McDonagh’s In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths, Taratino’s Pulp Fiction, and Pelayo De Lario’s Tales of Babylon. As a matter of fact, one of the characters quite openly breaks the fourth wall by referring to Pulp Fiction during...

‘Ghosts’ Producer Developing TV Version Of Podcast About Prolific British Con Woman
Ghosts producer Monumental Television is developing a TV version of a Global podcast about one of the most prolific fraudsters in British history. The indie has secured rights to Filthy Ritual, which is about Juliette D’Souza, who at the turn of the century wreaked havoc on a number of people’s lives until a rag-tag team of her victims came together to fight for justice. Described by her neighbors as being like ‘a knife in a velvet glove’, D’Souza claimed to have a special connection to an ancient source of power and wisdom deep in the Amazonian jungle, and she is said to have made at least £1M through extortion and manipulation. ITV Studios-backed Monumental makes BBC One smash Ghosts, which has been adapted for CBS, along with the likes of ITV’s Maryland and UKTV’s The Marlow Murder Club.

Beef and The Bear, the shows that joined Succession in a three-way domination of Monday night’s Emmy Awards, have a surprising amount of shared DNA.
“I think there’s a real yearning for authenticity right now,” said Elaine Frontain Bryant, EVP and Head of Programming Genres for A&e, Lifetime and Lmn. Beef and The Bear “have a vibe that feels like you’re a fly on the wall.”
Bryant’s comments came during a panel discussion Tuesday at the reborn NATPE Global conference in Miami, which has returned under new ownership after two dark years due to Covid and financial woes. The exec was joined onstage by Courtney Thomasma, EVP, Streaming, at AMC Networks; Jens Richter, CEO of Commercial and International for Fremantle; Paolo Koelle, Head of Prime Video Latin America; and Scott Herbst, Head of Scripted Development and EVP at Lionsgate Television.

Before “The Last of Us” and “Arcane,” it was Netflix’s and Powerhouse Animation’s “Castlevania” (now in its fourth season) that broke the video game adaptation curse with a highly stylized, anime-inspired horror-action show based on the Konami video game series. Now, the spinoff series “Castlevania: Nocturne” moves the action forward 300 years to the time of the French Revolution. With the new time period comes new themes, an expanded worldview, and a big change to the show’s visual style. Unsurprisingly, the biggest change was in the action, all thanks to one invention: Firearms.
“We had guns,” director Sam Deats told IndieWire. “A rifle-axe was my favorite thing, inspired by a trip to a New York museum that had a whole display of different weapons mixed with guns, and I just wanted to incorporate some of that in the show.”

Netflix’s Castlevania series has proven to be one of the streaming service’s most consistent surprises. Bursting onto the scene with relatively few (or perhaps just low) expectations, the animated series has since gone on to not only capture some of the best elements of the Castlevania games but forge quite the legacy in its own right.
That legacy was recently furthered with the release of Nocturne: the latest chapter in the acclaimed series that shakes a few things up while retaining the show’s high standard of quality. In this case, though, the thing that fascinates me most about Nocturne isn’t how it works so well as its own thing but rather how it pays tribute to the Castlevania games it is largely based on. My greatest hope is that Nocturne may even revive interest in the most underrated Castlevania game: Rondo of Blood.

With artificial intelligence currently front and center across the creative community, YouTube has published a set of AI music principles and launched something it’s calling the YouTube Music AI Incubator with a group of artists, songwriters and producers from Universal Music Group.
The principles, which the giant Alphabet/Google-owned platform said “are rooted in its commitment to collaborate with the music industry alongside bold and responsible innovation in the space” are three. They were developed with Umg chairman-ceo, Sir Lucian Grainge, and shared today by YouTube CEO Neal Mohan.
They include: a commitment to embrace AI responsibly in partnership with the music industry; protections “that help balance the interests of copyright holders with those of the creative community on YouTube”; and scaling up safeguards to AI-generated content to address challenges like trademark and copyright abuse, misinformation, spam.

Toledo, Spain — Global producer-distributor Fremantle has dropped an international trailer for “Negotiator,” a sleek, slick and chic eight-part São Paulo crime thriller produced by two prominent players on the Latino and Latin-American TV scene – Miami-based Spiral International and Brazil’s Boutique Filmes.
Acquiring world rights outside Latin America and Portugal, Fremantle will use Conecta Fiction in Toledo, Spain to introduce “Negotiator,” which underscores building market trends coursing through the international TV scene.
The busy trailer begins with a desperate kidnapper bursting through big church doors, revolver in hand pointing to a victim’s head. “I’m going to kill him,” he shouts hysterically.
Cut in counter-shot to a close up of the late-‘30s granite featured face of Captain Gabriel Menck (Malvino Salvador), head of negotiations for Gate, a special police unit charged with resolving crisis situations across Brazil’s São Paulo. “Nobody dies today,” Menck states categorically.

Michael Ironside's strong jaw lost him the role of Robocop in Paul Verhoeven's sci-fi classic — he tells BFI that "Robocop" special effects creator Rob Bottin said, "If we were to do [the Robocop look] on Michael, he'd look like a Mack truck." But his stern look has gained the Canadian actor plenty of work as assorted villains and tough guys across decades. In the 1980s and '90s, he would be known for roles like the telepathic psycho killer in Darryl Revok in early David Cronenberg work "Scanners," and for the hard-boiled Naval Aviator Lieutenant Commander "Jester" Heatherly in Tony Scott's "Top Gun."
After missing out on "Robocop," Ironside would get his chance to work with Verhoeven in 1990 with "Total Recall," where he would play the foil as ferocious enforcer Richter. He would reunite with the polarizing director again seven years later, this time in an adaptation of a controversial work.

Berlin, Nov 6 (Ians) Bayern Munich climbed atop the Bundesliga standings on Saturday after three first-half goals paved the way for a 3-2 win over Hertha Berlin in the 13th round.
Hertha started brightly on home soil, but clinical Bayern Munich broke the deadlock with its first chance in the 12th minute when Sadio Mane dispossessed Suat Serdar before setting up for Jamal Musial, who made no mistake and drilled the ball from ten meters into the top left corner.
Bayern pushed forward as Mane forced Hertha goalkeeper Oliver Christensen into action following a combination in the 24th minute.
Berlin suddenly had the chance to level the score, but Bayern custodian Manuel Neuer was equal to the chances of Davie Selke and Marco Richter at the half-hour mark.
Bayern added two goals in quick succession as in-form striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting wrapped up his brace within one minute, establishing a 3-0 lead in the 38th minute,...

Everyone's got to start somewhere, and if you were a child actor living in New York City during the 1980s and '90s, there was a decent chance you might get called up to appear on a sketch on NBC's "Late Night" when it was hosted by David Letterman and, later, Conan O'Brien. These hosts and their writing staff loved writing skits where the star got to interact with little children. With Letterman, there was a bit of an aloof, quasi-w.C. Fields vibe, whereas O'Brien was warmer and prone to getting upstaged by his precocious guest. It was a formula they went back to time and again because it always worked.
Take for instance a 1993 "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" sketch where the host and his sidekick, Andy Richter, welcome young Sarah Hughes, winner of the West Hartford Middle School Spelling Bee. If she looks awfully familiar, that's...

Netflix’s original Castlevania anime series may have come to a close with its fourth season, but the streaming service isn’t done with this universe of monsters and vampire hunters just yet. As longtime Castlevania fans know, just because Trevor Belmont, Sypha Belnades, and Alucard defeated Dracula in the 1400s doesn’t mean the Dark Lord will stay dead forever.
A sequel series called Castlevania: Nocturne will continue the story of the Belmonts never-ending battle against the forces of evil but it’ll focus on a whole new protagonist. Meet Richter Belmont, Trevor and Sypha’s descendant and heir to the family’s long legacy of vampire hunting.
