Kamasi Washington has unfeiled “Get Lit,” the latest single from his upcoming album Fearless Movement. The track features funk icon and Parliament Funkadelic member George Clinton and rapper D Smoke. Stream the song below.
In comparison to the meditative, eight-minute “Dream State,” Washington’s previous single featuring André 3000, “Get Lit” is a more straightforward, fun-loving bop. Living up to its name, the tune boasts a dance-worthy groove, swirling production, and an overall celebratory tone, as well as Clinton’s funkadelic performance and D Smoke’s impressive verse.

Kamasi Washington has recruited André 3000 for “Dream State,” the latest offering from the musician’s forthcoming album Fearless Movement.
Across a hypnotic eight minutes, Washington’s saxophone and André 3000’s flute interweave and enchant. As the song’s title suggests, there’s a dream-like trance that envelops the song, but it becomes much more active and vibrant when Kamasi Washington’s rhythm section enter. “Dream State” is more meditative than previous Fearless Movement cut “Prologue,” but it still features some dazzling, stirring moments of improvisation.

Accomplished jazz musician Kamasi Washington has confirmed his new album, Fearless Movement, set for release on May 3rd.
Fearless Movement is Kamasi Washington’s first album in six years, and the saxophonist refers to the record as his “dance album”: “It’s not literal,” Washington clarifies in a statement, “Dance is movement and expression, and in a way it’s the same thing as music —expressing your spirit through your body. That’s what this album is pushing.”
Another significant theme of Fearless Movement is new fatherhood, inspired by Washington’s experience having his first child several years ago. In addition to his daughter appearing on the album, Fearless Movement features contributions from André 3000, Thundercat, George Clinton, Bj the Chicago Kid, D Smoke, and fellow member of Washington’s collaborative group Dinner Party, Terrace Martin.

If last year’s Time Skiffs left you wanting more from Animal Collective, you’re in luck: the band have shared another new album called Isn’t It Now?, out today via Domino.
Like many artists, Animal Collective’s plans were changed when the pandemic hit. The experimental band wrote about 20 songs before the world went into lockdown, and Time Skiffs comprised nine compositions Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Deakin, and Geologist were able to record separately to a click track. They saved nine more, however, for Isn’t It Now?, longing to work together in the same room.
The band teamed with Russell Elevado for the project, recording its songs in late 2021 before road-testing them on tour in 2022. Featuring the 22-minute long single “Defeat,” Isn’t It Now? marks Animal Collective’s longest record to date. Pre-orders for physical formats are ongoing, and you can stream the album via Apple Music or Spotify below.

The big movie studios opted out of San Diego Comic-Con 2023, meaning the event didn't have all the air sucked up by the next big Marvel Cinematic Universe news for once. One of the most exciting announcements was "Lazarus," a new sci-fi thriller anime from Shinichirō Watanabe and Studio Mappa.
The announcement came with a teaser trailer; Watanabe's animes always have a musical theme and it looks like "Lazarus" will have the same jazzy score as "Bebop" (this time performed by saxophonist Kamasi Washington). Rather than a U.S. import like most anime, "Lazarus" will premiere on Toonami (the production team is aiming to be finished by the end of 2024). The American influence doesn't stop there, for the action scenes will be designed by "John Wick" director Chad Stahelski. Watanabe crafts animated action with unrivaled fluidity, so him and Stahelski working together is a dream team.

Adult Swim has given the green light to a new anime series from Shinichirō Watanabe, Lazarus.
The series will mark Watanabe’s return to the sci-fi action genre with a globe-trotting thriller set in the near future.
The year is 2052 – an era of unprecedented peace and prosperity prevails across the globe. The reason for this: mankind has been freed from sickness and pain. Nobel Prize winning neuroscientist Dr. Skinner has developed a miracle cure-all drug with no apparent drawbacks called Hapuna. Hapuna soon becomes ubiquitous… and essential. However, soon after Hapuna is officially introduced, Dr. Skinner vanishes.
Three years later, the world has moved on. But Dr. Skinner has returned – this time, as a harbinger of doom. Skinner announces that Hapuna has a short half-life. Everyone who has taken it will die approximately three years later. Death is coming for this sinful world – and coming soon.

Adult Swim has greenlit “Lazarus,” a new Toonami series from renowned anime director Shinichirō Watanabe, known for his work helming episodes of “Cowboy Bebop,” “Samurai Champloo” and “Kids on the Slope.”
Produced by Sola Entertainment and animated by Studio Mappa, “Lazarus” also recruits the contributions of “John Wick” series director Chad Stahelski, who designed several action sequences for the series, along with the musical talents of saxophonist Kamasi Washington; producer, DJ and musician Floating Points; and producer, DJ and musician Bonobo. The trio will provide a jazz and electronic score for the project.

Musical tag-teaming doesn’t have results much more fruitful than what came about when the showrunners of “A Small Light” picked Ariel Marx to compose the score for the limited series and Este Haim to serve as executive music producer. Neither Haim nor Marx was in a position to take anything about the job lightly, given that the eight-episode series for National Geographic and Disney+ tells the story of a Dutch woman, Miep Gies, who helped hide Anne Frank and her family from the Nazis. Yet, in their very separate roles, both found ways to bring musical light or even levity into a drama that inevitably skews toward tension.
Este Haim took on the Emp job for the first time with “A Small Light” after previously scoring or co-composing “Maid” and “Cha Cha Smooth” — on top of her day job as one-third of the rocking sister trio Haim. For “A Small Light,...

R&b is one of the biggest genres not only in music consumption but in the awards conversation. Artists like Beyoncé, Silk Sonic, Jazmine Sullivan, Jon Batiste, and H.E.R. have made a lot of noise due to their success at the Grammys, and it’s likely that one or two breakouts from this year will join their ranks. Let’s take a look at some buzzing names in R&b contention this year.
SEEBillboard Hot 100: Every #1 song of 2023
If you’re talking about R&b in 2023, you have to talk about Sza. The singer-songwriter has had a great year with the success of her sophomore album, “Sos.” It’s indisputably the frontrunner for Best Progressive R&b Album. There is, perhaps, a chance that the record could be moved to the pop field because it juggles many genres at once, but let’s assume it’s in R&b for now.

Dinner Party — the jazz/hip-hop supergroup composed of Robert Glasper, Terrace Martin, Kamasi Washington, and 9th Wonder — brought the whole family to Jimmy Kimmel Live! for a performance of their single “Insane” with guest vocalist Ant Clemons.
Following an introduction by the host that misidentified the track as coming from their “self-titled EP” rather than their new sophomore LP, Enigmatic Society, the scene opened to the quartet and Clemons huddled on couches for a casual, impromptu hangout that was immediately inviting and effortlessly cool. The laidback and intimate setting perfectly fit the song’s vibey tone and lovelorn lyrics, while the band’s close proximity only added to the intense and intricate interplay between Glasper’s keys, Martin’s synth and vocoder acrobatics, Clemons’ vocals, and Washington’s saxophone flourishes. Dinner Party — the jazz/hip-hop supergroup comprised of Terrace Martin, Robert Glasper, Kamasi Washington, and 9th Wonder — have shared “Insane,” a new song recorded with Ant Clemons. Listen to the single below.
“Insane” boosts a sampled drum loop from Mtume’s “Juicy Fruit” with fuzzed out bass, layering Glasper’s famous piano and Clemons’ vocals on top of the 1983 track’s syncopated rhythms. The result is what Dinner Party does best, blending the soul of R&b with hip-hop production.
Dinner Party formed back in 2020, when the group released a self-titled album that they quickly refreshed with Dessert, a new version of the LP that featured Snoop Dogg, Herbie Hancock, Alex Isley, and more. One such song, “Freeze Tag,” was one of the best releases of the year.

It’s been nearly nine years since the Robert Glasper Experiment released Black Radio II, the second, Grammy-winning installment of his mélange of contemporary jazz, beat-heavy hip-hop, and neo-soul melodies. Since then, Glasper disbanded the Experiment, embarked on soundtrack work such as the 2020 film The Photograph and the Bel-Air TV series with Terrace Martin, and engaged himself in damaging social media controversies. There has been a resurgence in popular support for jazz, too, and that’s partly thanks to Glasper (he contributed to Kendrick Lamar’s 2015 masterwork To Pimp a...

With past winners ranging from budding talents like H.E.R. and Anderson Paak to R&b icons like Beyoncé, Luther Vandross, and Usher, the R&b field at the Grammys tends to be a huge honor. The energy bouncing around San Francisco’s Chase Center for Metallica’s second 40th anniversary concert felt electric even before the band took the stage Sunday night. The first concert on Friday was all about anticipation — how could the thrash-metal pioneers commemorate their legacy in a fresh, exciting way? Well, that night they played a career-spanning set list in chronological order, blending big hits (“One,” “Nothing Else Matters”) with deep cuts (“Trapped Under Ice,” “Fixxxer”). Now that the group’s fans knew what to expect, Sunday night’s concert was all about catharsis.
