Sean Penn, Matthew Fox, and Kick Gurry are heading to Mipcom Cannes to talk about their satirical comedy series C*A*U*G*H*T.
In a major coup for the TV market, they’ll discuss the Australian show in an exclusive Media Mastermind Keynote on Wednesday, October 18 at 12pm local time in France, alongside distributor Fremantle.
Two-time Academy Award winner actor Penn, who serves as an executive producer (and acts as himself in the series), will feature in the panel in at the Palais des Festivales’ Grand Auditorium, alongside Fox (Lost), and Curry (Edge of Tomorrow), moderated by TV and film critic Rhianna Dhillon.
The session will feature footage and an ‘In Conversation with’ segment featuring Penn, Fox and Gurry, bringing insights about approach taken for the series, which explores themes of identity, fame, and the absurdity of the viral age and looks to comedically deconstructs the intellectual ideas humanity faces.

Great White is an aptly, if not particularly creatively named movie. It is merely one in a long line of movies that vilify the species of shark, and not even especially a good vilification. It starts out with promise, a young honeymooning couple enjoying a dip in a peaceful lagoon, only to become the first people eaten by the titular beastie. This is the highest quality the movie will achieve however, as from here on out there is clunky dialogue, strange character building, and the one thing that kills a movie faster than a speeding shark, the requisite stupid, predictable mistakes it takes to put otherwise apparently intelligent people in to dumb, dangerous, and almost always fatal positions. There are unexplored plot threads, unlikeable characters, and unnecessary things that serve no purpose other than to drag the viewer in to a “this character is flawed” or...

One has to imagine that conceptualizing a shark attack scene must be relatively easy. There’s a reason that these animals have become such evergreen villains in nature thrillers, and the basic cinematic architecture of an attack scene hasn’t changed all that much since “Jaws.” But the scariest part of a shark attack is the element of surprise, and for that to work, a shark film faces its toughest challenge: thinking of something for its potential chum to do in the moments when a shark is not attacking them.
This is a challenge that is poorly met by Martin Wilson’s “Great White,” a paint-by-numbers shark survival slog which strands five people on an inflatable life raft besieged by a hungry fish. Though boasting a few adequate action sequences, and foregoing the more gonzo schlockiness of peer projects like “The Meg” and “Shark Night,” the film’s human characters make for drab company,...

There’s a legend of sorts about a shipwreck on the island locale most tourists ask Charlie (Aaron Jakubenko) and Kaz (Katrina Bowden) to take them off the Australian coast. Only one man survived the ordeal and natives, like the Captain’s cook (Te Kohe Tuhaka’s Benny), have never forgotten his name. It thus means something when the trio’s latest fares (Kimie Tsukakoshi’s Michelle and Tim Kano’s Joji) take out an urn of ashes and a photograph of that very same man. He was her grandfather and always said he wanted his final resting place to be with the men who didn’t make it. Just as his journey back then proved deadly, however, Michelle’s is about to get arduous, too, after stumbling upon a legless cadaver washed ashore.

Of the creature feature subgenre, shark movies represent a unique sect capable of encompassing a range that spans from Jaws to Sharknado. Shark films can be truly exceptional pieces of film and they can be so off-the-wall and ridiculous that they achieve a whole other form of greatness. From the frightening to the ludicrous, shark movies are easy to love and offer a simple blueprint for filmmakers to follow. Which is why it’s almost impressive how much Great White manages to miss the mark.

Who doesn’t love a good shark movie? Hell, who doesn’t love a bad shark movie?! There’s certainly a wide variety of shark movies available these days (and I think we’ve reviewed most of them here on Nerdly too), from ridiculous films like Ouija Shark, Ghost Shark and Virus Shark, to The Asylum’s Sharknado franchise and more mainstream fare such as 47 Metres Down, The Shallows and The Reef.
And it’s with the latter film that Great White feels most in common. Both films come from Australian filmmakers, both films feature a small group of people stranded at the beck and call of great whites… But then aren’t all shark film usually about a small group of people trapped by sharks?

It doesn’t bode well for the success of your shark thriller when the audience wills the sharks to win. Kaz (Katrina Bowden) needs things to change for the better. In nine months her life is going to be very different but the laissez-faire attitude of her former marine biologist boyfriend – and budget McConaughey – Charlie (Aaron Jakubenko) doesn’t exactly scream secure future, their seaplane rarely climbs above the dock and the phone is ringing off the hook with calls from the bank.

This has the same vibe as The Shallows or The Reef, with survival sitting in the ocean being the focus of the narrative. And there's not one, but Two, big bad sharks out to get them. Scary stuff. This film looks like it might be seriously thrilling. Here's...
