Jason Kothari, Hong Kong-born entrepreneur and film producer who was an executive producer on Vin Diesel-starring “Bloodshot,” has acquired all rights to The Silent Flute, the spiritual martial arts project co-written by martial arts icon Bruce Lee in 1970. The project is to be set up as a limited series with John Fusco (“Marco Polo”) as screenwriter and executive producer.
The story of “Silent Flute” is set in a dystopian future after mankind has suffered from pandemics, fires and civil wars, and where all weapons and combat arts are banned. It follows a raw fighter who overcomes grave obstacles and loss to reach enlightenment and become the best fighter in the world.
“The Silent Flute” film script was a five-year collaboration between Lee and his friends and martial arts students, Oscar-winning writer Stirling Silliphant and Oscar-winning actor James Coburn. It encapsulated Lee’s vision for the true essence of martial...

Marvel and DC aren’t the only two comics companies churning out page-turning, pulpy action, and now they won’t be the only two studios duking it out for superiority on the big screen either.
Valiant Entertainment last month received a huge investment in their movie and TV development arm, and THR today reported that the comic publishing company has signed a five movie deal with Sony to bring two of their flagship titles, Bloodshot and Harbinger, to the big screen.
Bloodshot and Harbinger will each receive two films, with the first Bloodshot movie planned to arrive in 2017. The fifth film, Harbinger Wars, will bring the two properties together, effectively creating a Vcu to rival Marvel’s. This move was inspired by a 2013 crossover comic series of the same name.
This is an exciting move, as we’ve been interested in Valiant here at Sound on Sight for some time.

MTV Geek recently caught up with J. Michael Straczynski and inquired about his current project of penning a feature film for Valiant Comics’ Shadowman property. Much like Marvel/Disney and DC Comics/Warner Bros., Valiant is currently looking to explore bringing some of their stable characters to an expansive cinematic universe, focusing first on Bloodshot and Shadowman. Valiant CEO Jason Kothari has stated that “Shadowman is the first in a large slate of film projects that we are developing and funding internally at Valiant.”
At this current rate, MTV reports that the first draft for Shadowman may be submitted as early as this Spring with plans to begin filming in early 2014. The film is currently being produced by Valiant’s Jason Kothari and Dinesh Shamdasani and the Sean Daniel Company’s Daniel and Jason Brown. Straczynski is currently slated to serve as the executive producer.

A film adaptation of Valiant Comics' Harbinger was previously set up at Paramount Pictures, with X-Men: The Last Stand director Brett Ratner attached to helm. However, the project wa stalled at the studio due to rights issues, and according to Variety, Valiant Entertainment Group will be making the adaptation themselves. Stephen Susco, who most recently wrote Texas Chainsaw 3D and originally developed Harbinger for Paramount, has been hired to write the script. The site says that the film is still "a potential directing vehicle" for Ratner. Instead of having a studio develop the project, Valiant "sought financing and was given a capital infusion from private investment company Cuneo & Co. and partnered with former Marvel CEO and vice chairman Peter Cuneo to relaunch and independently develop their library of over 1,500 titles." Alexandra Milchan and Jay Stern will produce with Valiant Entertainment Group CEO Jason Kothari and chief creative officer Dinesh...

Although the film was a no-go at Paramount Pictures, Valiant Entertainment is moving forward with their Harbinger adaptation. The company has brought back Stephen Susco to write the script as a possible directing vehicle for Brett Ratner, reports Variety . Susco and Ratner were previously attached when the project was at Paramount. Alexandra Milchan will produce with Jay Stern along with Valiant Entertainment CEO Jason Kothari and chief creative officer Dinesh Shamdasani. Created by former Marvel Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter, the "Harbinger" comic book series was a hit in the 1990s, selling over five million comic books and was named Comic Book of the Decade. Back in March of 2010, we brought you a rumor about director Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class) reportedly gearing up to direct the comic book adaptation of the Valiant comic book series Bloodshot as his next film. That seemingly bogus report stated that Vaughan was writing the script alongside Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass, The Woman In Black), and fully financing the film himself.
Now, Deadline reports that Sony‘s Columbia Pictures has grabbed the rights to the Valiant comic from a spec script penned by Jeff Wadlow (Hail Mary), and the project will be produced by Neal Moritz of Original Film, alongside along Jason Kothari and Dinesh Shamdasani of Valiant Entertainment.
The Valiant series Bloodshot focused on mob assassin Angelo Mortalli, who was forced into an experimental procedure where his body was injected with nanites that enhanced his strength and skills but erased his memory in the process.

It's been a long time in the making, but it seems like a "Bloodshot" adaptation is finally coming together. There had been rumors Matthew Vaughn would be adapting the Valiant Comics series back in 2010, but nothing ever came to fruition on that. Now new reports are saying that Sony Pictures has acquired the comic with new talents attached to the script.
Deadline is reporting that Jeff Wadlow will write the script for Sony. Wadlow's most well known screenplay is for the 2007 horror film "Prey," but he is also known for directing "Never Back Down" in 2008.
What the Deadline story doesn't mention is any reference of Vaughn's script. Back in March 2010, it was said that Vaughn was writing a "Bloodshot" screenplay, though it was unclear if he would direct it as well. Deadline makes no mention of Vaughn's screenplay -- if it was even finished -- and simply said that he "isn't part of this equation.

Weird things happen to comic book characters when they're adapted for the big screen. Sometimes a studio can nail it (Batman Begins), and sometimes, well, sometimes we get crap like Spawn and even worse Faust. Hopefully the powers-that-be can get Bloodshot right!

Remember Valiant Comics? Yeah, that's a weird memory. Still, they delivered some incredible storylines while Marvel and DC destroyed the '90s with their awesome art, terrible storytelling and over-priced holographic cover special editions.
