Marianne Metivier’s debut feature “The Splendour of Life” (“Une splendeur de vivre”) is set to start principal photography at locations across Canada and the Philippines, the producers revealed at the Cannes Film Festival.
The ensemble cast includes Camille Rutherford (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Garance Marillier (“Raw”), Sue Prado (“Your Mother’s Son”), Kyrie Samodio (“Hito”) and Amaryllis Tremblay (“Genesis”).
Set against a lush countryside backdrop, Marie (Rutherford) questions her relationship, while Noée (Marillier) grieves her father. In a stifling Montreal, Eva (Kyrie Samodio) searches for stability as Jeanne (Tremblay) plans her departure.
Canadian-Filipino Metivier won acclaim for her short “She Who Wears the Rain” that was selected for the Berlinale Short Film Competition in 2020.
Geneviève Gosselin-g. of Canada’s Le Foyer Films, known for “Richelieu”, partners with Alexa Rivero of France’s Altamar Films (Venice 2021 winner “The Great Movement”) and Wilfredo Manalang of the Philippines’ Fusee Media (Cannes 2022 winner “Plan 75”), as producers.

Winner for Best Director – Short Film from Cinemalaya, “As He Sleeps” is a very intriguing, bordering on blasphemous one could say, short that deals with the concept of the ‘sanctity of marriage” in a rather unusual way.
In a visual style that reminds intently of Lino Brocka, the movie begins with a woman smoking in an apartment, while a voice condemning adultery is heard. The woman is named Christina, is in her 30s, and it turns out she has to take care of her paralyzed husband, Hector. As she cleans him with a sponge in his bed, a photo of them being happy in the past shows how their relationship was before he became bed-ridden. A man who has come to buy their TV arrives a bit later, taking the appliance with him. She has just also got rid of their goldfish, throwing them in the sink, perhaps in a...

With the last of the anti-covid measures being lifted, shops being reopened and people being able to walk through their hometowns without wearing masks all the time, we have to question what this new normal is. The concept itself suggests, one the one hand, a way back to the way things were, but also a different kind of awareness on the other hand. While the former certainly seems true for many, the latter is rather vague, with many societies, politicians and companies returning to their status quo, often repeating the same formula that has made things worse to begin with. When Filipino director Jun Robles Lana started making his new feature “Your Mother's Son”, the news of the being infected or killed by the virus was one horror next to the reports of people being shot by then-president Duterte's henchmen. Infamous for his provocative approach to his subjects and themes,...

Filipino filmmaker Jun Robles Lana is making his second appearance at Toronto International Film Festival with Your Mother’s Son, which is receiving its world premiere in the Centrepiece section.
Co-scripted by Lana and Elmer Gatchalian, the film tells the story of a hard-working mother and her delinquent son whose relationship is challenged when she invites one of her students to move into their home, so he can escape his violent father. Initially, it seems the son is suffering from a severe case of Oedipus complex, but as the film progresses, a more shocking tale of abuse of power and sexual dynamics begins to unfold.
Sue Prado (Barber’s Tales) plays the mother, with Kokoy de Santos (Gameboys) playing the son, and Elora Españo and Miggy Jimenez rounding out the cast. Lana, Perci Intalan and Ferdinand Lapuz produced the film through The IdeaFirst Company, Octobertrain Films, Quantum Films and Cineko Productions.

"Are you asking me to wait for bodies to get to shore?" The first trailer has debuted for a very interesting mystery horror titled Aurora from The Philippines. Made by Filipino director Yam Laranas, the film is about an island nation that is disrupted when a massive passenger ship named Aurora mysteriously collides and overturns. The story follows a young woman, the owner of a rundown inn, who must work to stay alive by finding missing dead bodies for a bounty - while at risk of danger from visitors who seek shelter in her home. Starring Anne Curtis (who also stars in BuyBust) with Mercedes Cabral, Andrea Del Rosario, Sue Prado, Ricardo Cepeda, Ruby Ruiz, Allan Paule, and Arnold Reyes. The imagery of the boat in this reminds me of the Costa Concordia disaster, it's just so eerie seeing a boat half flipped like that. Freaky. Here's the official trailer...
