Exclusive: Compelling Pictures is coming on to produce and finance the high-concept psychological horror thriller The Blur, written and being directed by emerging director Joe Miale. Denis O’Sullivan and Jeff Kalligheri are producing for Compelling, alongside Scott Carr and Josh Crook. Carr brought the project to Compelling back in 2020 as a pitch and Miale wrote the script.
The film follows a visually-impaired family tormented by a ghost only seen by those who have severe myopia. It introduces a villain named Smudge to the horror pantheon, and will use innovative visual techniques–largely in-camera–to bring the terrifying character to life. Producers cited a 2021 study by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness estimated that 43 million people worldwide are considered legally blind, while 295 million people worldwide live with moderate-to-severe visual impairment. And also noted the World Health Organization has estimated that approximately 2.2 billion people worldwide have some level of near or distance vision impairment.

"Skyfall" has occupied a strange place in the James Bond canon since its release 10 years ago. Simultaneously celebrated for reviving the franchise following the dismal "Quantum of Solace" and criticized for too often relying on hokey nostalgia plays, the film nonetheless maintains its status as one of the more significant entries in the 007 saga. It's also the most financially successful of the series, bringing in an impressive worldwide total of 1.1 billion at the box office.
Much of this is down to the producers ordering a serious overhaul for the 23rd 007 outing, leading to a host of new characters and the return of some beloved series mainstays including Q (Ben Whishaw) and his gadgets. But director Sam Mendes clearly didn't want to repeat the Bond tech of old. In fact, he took a remarkably restrained approach to the gadgets in "Skyfall," though the classic Aston Martin DB5 does make a comeback,...

"What is it to have all that power?" Well Go USA has released an official trailer for a strange indie feature titled Valley of the Gods, made by a Polish filmmaker named Lech Majewski. This first premiered at the Gdynia Polish Film Festival last year, and it screened at the Warsaw and Camerimage Film Festivals also in Poland. The film entwines Navajo lore with a reclusive trillionaire and his would-be biographer, creating a fascinating, mysterious and idiosyncratic vision of America. With three storylines following a middle-class writer, an eccentric trillionaire, and a struggling Navajo community under existential threat. Starring John Malkovich as Wes Tauros, and a main cast including Josh Hartnett, Bérénice Marlohe, Jaime Ray Newman, John Rhys-Davies, Keir Dullea, Saginaw Grant, and Joseph Runningfox. Whoaaa - this looks especially compelling and more than a bit trippy, almost like a Polish Jodorowsky film about America. Here's the first official trailer...

Well Go USA has acquired the North American rights to Lech Majewski’s Valley of the Gods. The company is set to release the surrealist drama starring Josh Hartnett and John Malkovich in theaters and on digital platforms on August 11.
Known for pushing the envelope when it comes to dreamlike visuals and fantasy, Majewski’s Valley of the Gods contrasts opposing social extremes — namely abundance and poverty – through three separate storylines. The story follows a middle-class writer, an eccentric trillionaire and members of a struggling nearby Navajo community. After a difficult divorce, copywriter John Ecas (Harnett) takes on the biography of the richest man on earth (John Malkovich), who is both his boss and the man behind a plan to mine sacred Navajo lands for uranium. Things take a turn when modern advancement runs afoul of the...

Torun, Poland – In his latest work, “The Valley of the Gods,” director Lech Majewski explores the ancient mythology of a downtrodden people and the absurd wealth of the world’s richest man in a surreal vision of modern America. The film screened at the EnergaCamerimage Intl. Film Festival as part of special showcase honoring Majewski, who received the Special Camerimage Directing Award. “Valley of the Gods,” which stars Josh Hartnett, John Malkovich, Keir Dullea, Bérénice Marlohe and John Rhys-Davies, presents the clash between the ancient civilization of the Navajo and the ultra-modern, high-tech world of multi-billionaires. The Navajo “live in really very harsh conditions and their territory is surrounded by this super civilization, the Roman Empire of today, with this epitome of technical innovation,” Majewski told Variety. “I don’t know whether there is another place in the world that has this kind of absolute opposite sides.” Majewski contrasted his...

"The machines are hunting everyone down. Machines programmed to kill." Vertical Entertainment has unveiled a new official Us trailer for the sci-fi indie film titled Revolt, from director Joe Miale making his feature debut. The film stars Lee Pace as a Us soldier in Africa attempting to fight back against a brutal alien invasion. This kind of seems a bit like a mash-up between District 9 and Transformers, with robot-like alien creatures taking over. Also starring Bérénice Marlohe (who was also in the sci-fi Kill Switch, as well as Skyfall and Song to Song), plus Jason Flemyng, Alan Santini, and Tom Fairfoot. Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. It's great to be in the know. To have a moment (hopefully more than one) when the veil drops and, per that old song, the mysteries of love (of life) come clear. Part 12 of Mark Frost and David Lynch's revived Twin Peaks opens with just such a scene, as FBI Agent Tammy Preston (Chrysta Bell) is initiated into the Blue Rose Task Force by her superiors Albert Rosenfield (Miguel Ferrer) and Gordon Cole (Lynch). The references Albert drops—to things like "Project Blue Book" and to people like "Chet Desmond"—will be familiar to any Peaks obsessive who has pored over the original series, the Fire Walk with Me movie, or Frost's 2016 tie-in novel The Secret History of Twin Peaks. But remember that...

It took 12 whole episodes, but Audrey Horne (Sherilyn Fenn) has finally returned to our television screens.
The Twin Peaks chat rooms, message boards and Twitter feeds have been speculating for years on end about where we would find her and how (Is she in Hollywood? Is she the mysterious billionaire in New York? Is she still in a coma? Was she horribly disfigured in the bank explosion? Is she now running One Eyed Jacks?). But I am fairly certain that no one saw this outcome, this development, this new Audrey.
At first I found it confusing and jarring: that weird guy is Audrey’s husband?...

Quiet Earth has debuted the trailer for Joe Miale's Revolt. Aka Prisoner of War, this sci-fi thriller was shot in South Africa. Completed in 2015, the film will see its premiere in Japan, this Summer. A North American release date remains elusive. Revolt stars Lee Pace (The Fall, 2006) as a U.S. soldier, fighting off an alien invasion. Though, the aliens look very robotic. Revolt also stars: Bérénice Marlohe and Amy Louise Wilson. The film's official trailer, courtesy of Dutch FilmWorks, is hosted here. The synopsis, from distribution house, Voltage Pictures, mentions a French aid worker. Together, Bo (Pace) and Nadia (Marlohe) stave off mankind's extinction as the world is overrun by robotic juggernauts. The war looks hopeless, unless new technology can be developed, to thwart the onslaught. The trailer shows some of the film's special effects. The alien force is almost entirely developed via CGI. I really don't know what's going on, but it does seem very cool. This looks like it's half video game, and half movie combined into one, and I'm not sure it's going to work. But I'm definitely curious anyway. Get ready. Here's the full-length trailer (+ poster) for Tim Smit's Kill Switch, direct from YouTube (via Tmb): You can also still...

A brand new trailer for sci-fi action movie Kill Switch, starring Dan Stevens, has landed...
Update: A second trailer has now landed for this one. Which looks like this...
Here's our story on the original trailer from the start of the month...
Dan Stevens has been a busy man these past few years, evidenced by the debut trailer for one of the many projects on his docket: sci-fi action film Kill Switch. However, the trailer showcases a rather unconventional effort with cinematography so reminiscent of a first-person-shooter video game, you’d think that this was a trailer for a movie adaptation of Half-Life. For the record, it’s not.

The Kill Switch trailer is a teaser for its video game cinematic style, showcasing flying ships and things falling from the sky amidst a story about an experiment for unlimited energy gone awry.

"This is the opportunity to explore impossible frontiers." What the heck is this? Saban Films has released a very weird teaser trailer for a sci-fi film titled Kill Switch (not related to the Steven Seagal action film Kill Switch). This one is actually based on a Pov concept short film called What's in the Box?, which a visual effects supervisor has turned into a feature-length film. And it still has some video game-esque Pov shots in it. Dan Stevens stars, with Charity Wakefield, and Bérénice Marlohe. I don't even know what is going on in this trailer, only that Dan Stevens plays a pilot, and there's very weird sci-fi stuff happening. Fire it up. Here's the first teaser trailer for Tim Smit's Kill Switch, direct from YouTube (via Tmb): A pilot (Dan Stevens) battles to save his family and the planet after an experiment for unlimited energy goes wrong.

Dan Stevens is everywhere these days. The star of this year’s “Colossal” and “Beauty and the Beast” will appear next in “Kill Switch,” the sci-fi action film from first-time feature director Tim Smit. In the movie, Stevens stars as Will Porter, a pilot who battles to save his family (and the planet) after an experiment for unlimited energy goes drastically wrong. Charity Wakefield and Bérénice Marlohe (“Skyfall”) co-star.

Once upon a time, Terrence Malick was a filmmaker who took a legendarily long amount of time between projects. He has since shrunk his turnaround time significantly, becoming, at least by his standards, rather prolific. Sadly, that’s also led to diminishing returns, at least in this writer’s humble opinion. This week, Malick unleashes another film in Song to Song, one that’s spiritually similar to his last few flicks. It’s not the outright misfire that the last two were, but it’s nowhere near the quality that he was previously known for. It’s a shame, but this might be the new normal for him. Alas. The movie is a romantic drama set against the music scene in Austin, Texas. Plot and dialogue are essentially non-existent, but there’s a love triangle of sorts between musician Bv (Ryan Gosling), aspiring musician Faye (Rooney Mara), and producer Cook...

The music scene in Austin, Texas, is alive with talent and energy – and you hope that energy would inspire Terrence Malick, who lives there, to bust out of the filmmaking funk of his recent work (Knight of Cups, To the Wonder). No such luck. Despite a few glimpses of Iggy Pop, Flea, Lykke Li and Big Freedia in live performance, Song to Song has no music in its DNA, not to mention its soul. Instead, Malick indulges in his usual visual tropes, having characters wander around aimlessly while muttering their mock-profound thoughts in voiceover.

Music, sex, rock ‘n roll….”Song To Song” (formerly titled “Weightless“) doesn’t sound like your average Terrence Malick movie, and perhaps that’s what makes this latest entry from the suddenly prolific director so intriguing (don’t forget, he’s already wrapped his next movie, the WWII pic “Radegund“). But some things remain the same, including his bonkers ensemble.
Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Haley Bennett, Natalie Portman, Michael Fassbender, Val Kilmer, Benicio Del Toro, Clifton Collins Jr., Angela Bettis, Bérénice Marlohe, Florence Welch, and Holly Hunter all star in the movie set against the backdrop of the Austin music scene, where relationships collide.

Update: See the trailer here.
The first of two new Terrence Malick films this year will premiere in less than a month, and arrive in theaters in almost exactly four weeks. While we’re still waiting on the trailer for Song to Song, Broad Green Pictures have now unveiled its first poster ahead of an SXSW premiere. The film was recently rated R for “some sexuality, nudity, drug use and language,” and this colorful one-sheet features our main four leads behind an LP — fitting for the music-heavy project.
It’s definitely starring Rooney Mara, Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender, Natalie Portman, and Cate Blanchett, and maybe also featuring Haley Bennett, Val Kilmer, Benicio Del Toro, Clifton Collins Jr., Angela Bettis, Bérénice Marlohe, Florence Welch, and Holly Hunter. We’ve heard the trailer will be out as early as next week, so check back soon. In the meantime, see the poster and synopsis below.

The distributor announced at the Efm it has picked up North American rights to Tim Smit’s sci-fi starring Dan Stevens and Bérénice Marlohe.
The sci-fi is based on Smit’s short What’s In The Box? and takes place in a futuristic world where a pilot battles to save his family when an energy experiment goes wrong.
Patrick Chu produced for FilmNation alongside Smit, and Sander Verdonk and Denis Wigman for Ctm Films.
FilmNation’s Aaron Ryder and Milan Popelka are executive producers with SquareOne Entertainment’s Al Munteanu, RainMaker Films’ Clay Pecorin and Russell Geyser, and Thibaut Niels.
“Smit’s previous work in VFX is evident throughout this film, and his experience working within the action and sci-fi genre takes his feature debut to a spectacular level,” Saban Films’ Bill Bromiley said.
“This will be a unique film that will captivate our audiences with its heavy visuals and thought-provoking plotlines.”

You might wind up being cut from his movie or spending days on set to have your role reduced to a fleeting glimpse in the background of an innocuous scene, but actors have no problem lining up to work with Terrence Malick, and “Weightless” — now titled “Song To Song” — is no different. Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Haley Bennett, Natalie Portman, Michael Fassbender, Val Kilmer, Benicio Del Toro, Clifton Collins Jr., Angela Bettis, Bérénice Marlohe, Florence Welch, and Holly Hunter are among those who signed up for the director’s latest, and the first look at the long developing movie is here.

In an uncharacteristically busy year for Terrence Malick, he has, in the past 12 months, had the theatrical release of Knight of Cups, Criterion’s unveiling of his director-approved restoration of The New World, the premiere of two documentaries, finished shooting a new WWII-set feature, and even had time for a rare live appearance. He’ll now kick off 2017 in a major way: his Austin-set drama formerly titled Weightless, which follows intersecting love triangles in the world of music, has received an official release date, new title, and the first look.
Along with their exclusive photo debut above, Indiewire announced today that Broad Green Pictures has set a March 17, 2017 release date for the film now titled Song to Song starring Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Haley Bennett, Natalie Portman, Michael Fassbender, Val Kilmer, Benicio Del Toro, Clifton Collins Jr., Angela Bettis, Bérénice Marlohe, Florence Welch, and Holly Hunter.

Halt and Catch Fire, AMC’s smart, slick series about the fledgling computer industry of the 1980s, is California dreamin’. Joe, Cameron, Gordon, and Donna have all left Texas’ Silicon Prairie for Silicon Valley. “It gets out of the garage very quickly and we’re in the big leagues now,” series star Lee Pace tells HitFix of Halt’s new season debuting later this month. Halt and Catch Fire (which takes its name from an early computer command) started off with salesman/visionary Joe MacMillan’s race to compete with Ibm’s personal computer. Season 2 shifted its focus to online gaming. Now Halt and Catch Fire is going into its third season, which is longer than either of Pace’s previous television shows lasted. His team-ups with Bryan Fuller, Pushing Daisies and Wonderfalls, were canceled before their time, in the former case cutting short Pace’s endearing, Emmy-nominated role as the pie-maker Ned.

It may have first entered production all the way back in 2011, but thanks to directing duties on both To The Wonder and, more recently, the Christian Bale-led Knight of Cups, Weightless fell far down the pecking order for esteemed filmmaker Terrence Malick.
It’s finally starting to display signs of life, however, with the British Board Of Film Classification (via The Playlist) posting not only the movie’s official running time – just north of 145 minutes in length – but also the ensemble cast that will be headlining Malick’s latest creative effort.
Pulling together some of the talent that also featured in existential feature Knight of Cups, the filmmaker will reteam with Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett and Natalie Portman for the musical drama, while there’s also roles for Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara, Haley Bennett, Michael Fassbender, Val Kilmer, Benicio Del Toro, Clifton Collins Jr., Angela Bettis, Bérénice Marlohe, Florence Welch,...

With Knight of Cups arriving on Blu-ray soon (albeit with some embarrassing cover art) and Voyage of Time finally getting a release date, the year of Terrence Malick looks to continue as promised. His other feature in the can is the Austin-set Weightless, which follows intersecting love triangles in the world of music. Today finally brings confirmation it’s complete with an official running time, rating, and cast.
Thanks to an update at the British Board of Film Classification, we know they’ve given the film a 15 rating for “infrequent strong sex” and “sex references,” which makes it likely the MPAA will slap the film with an R rating. They also note that Weightless runs 145 minutes and 45 seconds — nearly 30 minutes longer than Knight of Cups — and confirm the cast: Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Haley Bennett, Natalie Portman, Michael Fassbender, Val Kilmer, Benicio Del Toro, Clifton Collins Jr.,...

17 years ago today, long before we knew the Force would have an awakening in 2015, Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace brought new tales of a galaxy far, far away to the big screen for the first time since 1983’s Return of the Jedi. It was the beginning of a much-maligned prequel trilogy that would give us Jar Jar Binks, midi-chlorians, and a love story for Anakin Skywalker. (And some good things! Don’t forget podracing! And Darth Maul!) Ultimate backlash didn’t stop audiences eager for a new Star Wars movie from turning out in droves, though: Phantom Menace was 1999’s highest grossing film, and all three prequel films ended up earning over $2.5 billion at the worldwide box office. Revenge of the Sith was also released on the 19th of May. Today marks 11 years since the prequel conclusion hit theaters worldwide, after premiering at – believe it or not – the Cannes Film Festival.

It was no secret that David Lynch‘s new season of Twin Peaks (Twin P3aks is the name I’m trying to get off the ground) will be big — around 18 hours in length, if early reports are to be believed, perhaps split into two new seasons — and, this being a David Lynch production, contain a few off-kilter casting choices to fill out its many new roles. The names thrown around have been hugely promising, eyebrow-raising, or some combination: Jennifer Jason Leigh, Laura Dern, Naomi Watts, Jim Belushi, Robert Forster, Ashley Judd, Amanda Seyfried, Tom Sizemore — whether they’re previous collaborators or newcomers to the Lynch fold, all making more uncertain the matter of what, exactly, he and Mark Frost have planned.

Somehow not a low-budget, Croatia-shot thriller, To the Bone has added Keanu Reeves to its cast. The feature debut of writer-director Marti Noxon, it’ll see him star opposite Lily Collins, playing “Dr. William Beckham, the doctor with an unorthodox style who pushes Ellen (Collins) to choose life and commit to getting better.” Being that this comes from the helmer’s own experiences, one expects something a cut above the standard afterschool special.
