London, Aug 3 (Ians) Former England captain Nasser Hussain has backed veteran fast-bowler James Anderson to find his form and leave an impact during the side’s Test tour of India next year after an unimpressive time in the recent Ashes series.
Anderson struggled to leave an impact during the drawn 2-2 series against Australia, taking just five wickets at an average of 85.40 from four appearances. England’s next Test assignment is a five-match series in India from January 25 to March 11 next year, with Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Rajkot, Ranchi and Dharamshala being the venues.
Anderson, who has the most Test wickets (690) for any fast bowler in the history of the format, has picked six of his 32 five-wicket hauls in Tests against India, with his average in the country being 29.32.
“Jimmy’s got a very good record against India…and you need a balanced attack. You need that experience for younger players to come in.

London, July 31 (Ians) Veteran fast-bowler Stuart Broad got his perfect fairytale ending to a glorious cricketing career by picking the last two wickets as England beat Australia by 49 runs in the fifth and final Ashes Test at The Oval on Monday to level an enthralling series 2-2.
Resuming from 135 for no loss, Australia were going great guns with all ten wickets in hand, before a ball change in the 37th over took their top three batters out. Steve Smith and Travis Head led Australia’s recovery before the rain came in.
After the two-hour rain break ended, Chris Woakes and Moeen Ali blew Australia away as four wickets fell for only 11 runs. Todd Murphy and Alex Carey frustrated England for a brief period as Australia went from 264 for three to 294 for 8.

London, July 31 (Ians) Veteran England fast bowler James Anderson has revealed that Stuart Broad’s retirement from the game after the end of the fifth Ashes Test at The Oval has made him “even more firm” in continuing to play the game.

Anderson came into the fifth and final Ashes Test on the back of taking just four wickets in the series at an average of 76.75. London, July 31 (Ians) Former England captain Nasser Hussain has stated that the hosts are “slight favourites” to win the fifth and decisive Ashes 2023 Test against Australia as the pitch will offer a turn on Day 5 at The Oval which will aid Ben Stokes’ side to level the series 2-2.
The lashing rain in London on Sunday forced the umpires to call stumps early on Day 4, with Australia closing the day four on 135 for no loss, still 249 runs away from taking the Ashes 3-1 and England needing 10 wickets to level the series.
“My feeling is that England are still slight favourites, even after Australia’s start. The pitch is spinning and a day-five Oval pitch does turn,” Hussain told Sky Sports.
He further added the rain has provided Moeen Ali with some additional time to recover from his groin strain, indicating that off-spinner’s recovery might play a crucial role on...

London, July 30 (Ians) With veteran England fast-bowler Stuart Broad set to retire from all forms of the professional game post the conclusion of the fifth and final Ashes Test at The Oval, former captain Nasser Hussain feels his retirement won’t influence his long-time bowling partner James Anderson on following the same path.
Anderson turned 41 on Sunday, the fourth day of the fifth and final day, and is England’s all-time leading Test wicket-taker with 690 wickets. He came into the ongoing match with just four wickets in the series at an average of 76.75.
On Day Two, he struggled initially but was able to beat both edges of the bat and managed to take out Mitchell Marsh to pick figures of 1-67 in 26 overs, though Australia took a lead of 12 runs. England’s next Test assignment after the Ashes will be a five-match trip to India from January 25 to March 11.

London, July 29 (Ians) Former England captain Michael Vaughan has said that some of Australia’s batting on day two of the final Ashes 2023 Test at The Oval was the worst and he has never seen Aussies play with so much fear.
Half-century from Steve Smith, along with vital contributions from captain Pat Cummins and off-spinner Todd Murphy helped Australia take a lead of 12 runs against England after being bowled for 295 in the closing stages of the play on Friday.
Throughout the Day 2, Australia were content with a tentative approach as England’s seamers bowled with immense control and discipline.

Veteran fast-bowler James Anderson, who turns 41 during the fifth Test, has retained his place in the playing eleven despite taking only four wickets in his three Tests of the series so far.
Stuart Broad will also play at The Oval, making him the only England bowler to play all five matches of the Ashes, with Chris Woakes overcoming a soreness issue in his quadriceps to be fit to play in the fifth Ashes Test.

Dubai, July 25 (Ians) Australia legend Ricky Ponting has labelled as “ridiculous” suggestions by former England captain Joe Root to help combat bad weather and slow over-rates by extending Test sessions into the evening.
“That’s a ridiculous thing to say,” said Ponting adding that it is not within the current laws of cricket.
Root has suggested after Manchester’s fickle weather cost England any chance of levelling a riveting Ashes series at 2-2 when the recent fourth Test at Old Trafford petered out to a tame draw. Root was left frustrated at the circumstances surrounding the finish of the match that saw the entire final day washed out.

London, July 24 (Ians) England have named an unchanged 14-member squad for the fifth Ashes Test against Australia starting at The Oval from Thursday. Australia have retained the Ashes with the fourth Test at Old Trafford ending in a draw due to rain on Sunday.
The result means that the Ashes urn will be headed back to Australia after this series ends. The Ben Stokes-led side were in a dominant position for the majority of the match but were denied a crack at victory due to rain not allowing any play to happen on Day Five. It’s also the first time that England have played a draw under Stokes’ leadership.

New Delhi, July 24 (Ians) Former England captain Michael Vaughan described the Australian cricket team as fortunate in retaining the Ashes, pointing out that rain helped the visitors.
The entire final day of the fourth Test was lost due to rain in Manchester on Sunday and the drawn match. The result means that the Ashes urn will be headed back to Australia regardless of the outcome in the fifth Test of an enthralling series at The Oval that starts on Thursday.
England needed five wickets to force a win with Australia needing 61 runs to force the hosts into batting again. The Ben Stokes-led side was in a dominant position for the majority of the match, but they were denied a crack at victory due to rain not allowing any play to happen on day five.

Manchester, July 23 (Ians) England seamer Stuart Broad feels that the hosts need “luck from the weather gods” to level the ongoing Ashes 2023 series on the final day of the fourth Test at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Broad firmly believes that it would be “unjust” if rain were to deprive them of a victory that could set up an opportunity for a series decider.
On Saturday, during the fourth day of the fourth Test, only 30 overs were played with the morning and evening sessions wiped out due to rain, as Australia reached 214 for 5 in 71 overs at stumps.
England head into the final day with a 61-run lead and need to claim Australia’s remaining five wickets in quick succession before any potential weather interruptions, if they are to level the series at 2-2.

Manchester, July 21 (Ians) Australia are sweating on an injury suffered by pace bowler Mitchell Starc as they get ready to go into the third day of the fourth Test at Old Trafford, trailing England by 67 runs.
Starc suffered a concerning shoulder injury late on Day Two after landing awkwardly while attempting a diving stop at mid-on.
The hosts rode on a scintillating century by opener Zak Crawley (189) and half-centuries by all-rounder Moeen Ali (54) and former skipper Joe Root (84) to reach 384/4 in 72 overs
England responded after bundling out Australia for 317 in their first innings thanks to a 5-62 haul by Chris Woakes with Stuart Broad claiming 2-68.
Australia’s bowling efforts were hampered as Starc, who at times had looked hobbled by a separate left leg issue on Thursday, was in clear pain after the shoulder knock and was forced to leave the field.

Manchester, July 20 (Ians) Opener Zak Crawley slammed a magnificent 189 off 182 deliveries and put England in commanding position against Australia as hosts were 384-4 with a vital lead of 67 runs at stumps on day two of the fourth Ashes 2023 Test at Old Trafford, here on Thursday.
With an eye on the weather in Manchester coming into play on days four and five, Crawley led England’s batting charge from the front, hitting 12 fours and a maximum to hit a sensational maiden Ashes century in just 93 balls, as Australia were left rattled by the opener’s blazing knock.
Moeen Ali justified him being slotted on number three with a knock of 54 before Mitchell Starc took him out. Crawley and Joe Root (84 off 95 balls) joined forces to hit a jaw-dropping 178 runs from 25 overs in an extraordinary show of stroke-play in the second session, as England bossed the day’s play, leaving Australia listless.

Manchester, July 20 (Ians) England cricketer Moeen Ali on Thursday entered an exclusive club of men’s Test all-round cricketers, who have the double of 3,000 runs and 200 wickets, on day two of ongoing fourth Ashes 2023 Test at Old Trafford, here.
Coming out to bat at number three, Ali was unbeaten on 31 at lunch. He became the 16th men’s cricketer to achieve the Test all-rounders’ double of 3,000 runs and 200 wickets.
Moeen had 200 wickets and 2,977 runs in Test cricket before the start of the ongoing Ashes Test at Old Trafford. He crossed 3000 Test runs after hitting back-to-back fours off Australia captain Pat Cummins in the 14th over, as England reached 61-1 at lunch.

Manchester, July 19 (Ians) Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad made impactful contributions to give England first day honours in the fourth Ashes 2023 Test as Australia were 299-8 at stumps at Old Trafford, here on Thursday.
Woakes picked 4-52 in 18.5 overs to be England’s best bowler of the day, while Broad took 2-68 in 14 overs. During the opening day, Broad also reached 600 Test wickets, becoming just the second fast bowler and fifth bowler overall to reach the landmark.
It was a day where all Australian batters got starts, but none converted it into a big total.
After England elected to bowl first as skipper Ben Stokes went against the narrative of batting first, Broad moved to 599 Test wickets when he trapped Usman Khawaja lbw for three early in the morning session. David Warner shared a second-wicket stand of 46 with Marnus Labuschagne (51), before being dismissed by Woakes for 42.

Manchester, July 19 (Ians) Veteran England cricketer Stuart Broad on Wednesday became the second fast-bowler to pick 600 wickets in Test cricket on day one of the fourth match of the Ashes 2023 series at Old Trafford, here.
The 36-year old Broad achieved the historic feat after taking the wicket of Australia’s left-handed batter Travis Head. His England team-mate James Anderson, is the only other fast-bowler to have more than 600 Test wickets.
Overall, Broad is fifth bowler to take 600 scalps in Tests after Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan (800), Australia’s Shane Warne (708), Anderson (688) and India’s Anil Kumble (619).
Broad began the ongoing Old Trafford Test on 598 wickets and soon moved to 599 when he trapped Usman Khawaja lbw early in the match. In the third session, Broad got his Test wicket number 600 when Head was caught by Joe Root on the boundary.

New Delhi, July 19 (Ians) Veteran Australian opener David Warner has expressed his fondness for the banter song created by England fans, which humorously references his less-than-impressive performance against his nemesis seasoned English seamer Stuart Broad.
Warner’s well-documented struggles against Stuart Broad are evident with the English pacer dismissing him a total of 17 times throughout his career.
In the Headingley Test, Broad got Warner for the 16th and 17th time in a battle that is now a decade old.
On the Vaughany and Tuffers Cricket Club podcast, Warner admitted that he enjoys the banter song that England fans sing about him adding that he relishes his rivalry with Broad and praised the pacer’s consistent ability to bowl in impeccable areas throughout the game.

Old Trafford (Manchester), July 18 (Ians) Fast-bowling all-rounder Cameron Green and pace Josh Hazlewood made their return as Australia announced their Playing XI for the fourth match of the ongoing Ashes 2023 series, with visitors to go into a Test without a specialist spinner for the first time in over a decade.
Scott Boland and Todd Murphy make way for Green and Hazlewood from the side that lost by three wickets at Headingley.
Fit-again Green, who missed the Leeds Test with a hamstring injury, has been listed to bat at seven, behind Mitch Marsh at No.6, with wicketkeeper Alex Carey to come in at No.8 as the Aussies rejigged the balance of their side to squeeze in their two all-rounders.
Marsh struck a blazing century in Leeds to guarantee his spot, leaving Murphy as the fall guy with Green coming back into the side to give captain Pat Cummins five pace bowling options.

Manchester, July 18 (Ians) Australia captain Pat Cummins expects David Warner will play in the fourth Test at Old Trafford as the visitors are aiming for a victory that would secure the Ashes and prevent the series from going to a decider.
Warner has made 141 runs from six hits this Ashes series and his place at the top of Australia’s batting order has come under scrutiny after his twin failures in Headingley Test, falling victim to Ashes nemesis Stuart Broad in both innings for 4 and 1.
“I think Warner has been going really well. I thought at Lord’s, he was really impressive. Last week, like many of us, he probably didn’t contribute as much as he would have liked with the bat,” Cummins said.

Manchester, July 17 (Ians) Veteran quick James Anderson has replaced fellow pacer Ollie Robinson in England’s playing eleven for the fourth Ashes Test starting at Old Trafford on Wednesday.
Anderson was rested from England’s playing eleven for the third Test at Headingley, where they won by three wickets to keep the series alive. He now comes in for the Manchester Test in place of Robinson, who experienced back issues during the victory at Headingley. The back issues meant Robinson bowled only 11 overs in the first innings and didn’t bowl at all in second innings.
In the ongoing Ashes, Anderson has taken just three wickets at an average of 75.33 in the first two Tests at Edgbaston and Lord’s. He will now have a chance to bowl from the James Anderson End at his home ground Old Trafford, something which was also indicated by skipper Ben Stokes.

Manchester, July 16 (Ians) Former Australia captain Ian Chappell slammed England for bringing tearaway quick Mark Wood late in the playing eleven for the ongoing Ashes, saying his belated inclusion highlighted a typical problem in the set-up of failing in making the right selections.
Playing in a Test for the first time since last year’s tour of Pakistan, Wood picked 5-34 from 11.4 overs and 2-66 from 17 overs in both innings of the match at Headingley.
The pacer, who has missed many matches in between during his career due to various injuries, proved to be a crucial point of difference for England in winning the Headingley Test by three wickets.

Manchester, July 16 (Ians) Former England opener Alastair Cook believes Australia’s top-order batter Marnus Labuschagne’s dismissal in the second innings of third Ashes Test at Headingley showed that he was struggling with himself and needs to find form if the visitors need to win in last two matches.
From appearing as an injury replacement for Steve Smith at Lord’s in August 2019 in the Ashes through to the start of this summer, Labuschagne averaged 62. However, the right-hander batter has averaged only 24 and is looking a pale shadow of himself in the current Ashes series, apart from losing his top spot in the Men’s Test batters ranking.

Manchester, July 16 (Ians) Though Stuart Broad has dismissed David Warner 17 times in Test cricket, the veteran England fast-bowler feels that dominating in the battle against the left-handed opener hasn’t been as easy as it looks.
In the third Ashes Test at Headingley, Broad got Warner out in both innings, taking the tally of him being dismissed by the pacer thrice in the series. The 37-year-old Broad had earlier dismissed Warner seven times in the 2019 Ashes series in England.

New Delhi, July 13 (Ians) Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has offered his perspective on the ongoing discussion surrounding the selection of David Warner and said the veteran opener has done enough in the past to warrant another chance.
Warner has made 141 runs from six outings in this Ashes series and his place at the top of Australia’s batting order has been further questioned after he failed twice during the most recent Test that England won in Headingley when dismissed by long-time nemesis Stuart Broad on both occasions.
While captain Pat Cummins has already come out and said Australian selectors will consider all options when settling on their XI for the crucial fourth Test, Ponting is inclined to stick with Warner.

Dubai, July 12 (Ians) Australia batter Travis Head has overtaken team-mates Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne to grab a career-best second position in the Icc Men’s Test Player Rankings released on Wednesday.
Head jumped two places and up to second behind New Zealand veteran Kane Williamson on the back of his tremendous Ashes series against England that has already netted him a total of 266 runs at an average of 44.33.
The 29-year-old’s previous best ranking was third, attained after the Icc World Test Championship Final against India last month, in which he had scored a decisive 163 in the first innings.
Head’s scores of 39 and 77 in the third Ashes Test against England at Headingly have taken him to within nine points of Williamson’s 883 rating points even as the batting rankings continue to be volatile at the top with five of the top seven featuring in the ongoing Ashes series.

London, July 11 (Ians) Former Australia cricketer Ian Healy reckoned that David Warner was not good enough in the third Test at Headingley but he still wants the 36-year-old veteran to open alongside Usman Khawaja in the fourth Test in Manchester, starting from July 19.
Warner was dismissed for just 4 in the first innings and 1 in the second innings, caught by Zak Crawley in the slips off the bowling of his arch nemesis Stuart Broad on both occasions as Australia lost the Headingley Test to England.
“What he put out at Headingley wasn’t good enough. His technique recently had been much better, head over the ball, but it all disappeared at Headingley,” Healy said on Senq Breakfast.
“He was jumping around, he was unstable at the crease and he was distracted by the crowd. It wasn’t good enough and we need better because he’s putting Marnus (Labuschagne) and Steve Smith...

Leeds, July 9 (Ians) Though Rain wiped out the first two sessions on Day Three of the ongoing third Ashes Test at Headingley, it didn’t stop the action from moving at a frenetic pace in the one session of play possible on Saturday.
In the end, England reached 27/0 at stumps in a chase of 251 after their bowlers made good use of the overcast conditions to bowl out Australia for 224. Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley remained unbeaten on 18 and 9 respectively for England to leave the required runs to 224.
Resuming from 116/4 and with their lead at 142 runs, the total could have been a lot less for Australia if Travis Head hadn’t struck a magnificent 77 in conditions that were very tricky for batting.
Chris Woakes (3-68) dismissed first-innings centurion Mitchell Marsh (nicked behind) and Alex Carey (chopped onto his stumps) in quick succession, while Mark Wood (3-66) took out Mitchell Starc and...

London, July 2 (Ians) When it mattered the most for England, captain Ben Stokes dished out yet another heroic and stunning 155 in the pursuit of chasing 371. But it was not enough for the hosts to avoid a 43-run loss to Australia on a thrilling fifth and final day of the second Ashes Test at Lord’s on Sunday.
Resuming the final day on 114/4, Stokes and Ben Duckett (83) added a further 63 runs before the former fell to Josh Hazlewood just after the first hour of the morning session was over.
Jonny Bairstow was run-out in controversial circumstances for 10, as wicketkeeper Alex Carey threw the ball at the stumps after the batter wandered out of the crease while avoiding a bouncer, leaving England at 193/6, with the crowd booing Australia and some confrontational scenes happening in Long Room at lunch break.
In between, Stokes went for an ultra-attacking approach with the bat, reaching his...

London, July 2 (Ians) Australia have asked for the Marylebone Cricket Club (McC) to investigate incidents of its players being abused and confronted by members in the Long Room during the lunch break at the Lord’s following Jonny Bairstow’s controversial dismissal on Day Five of the second Ashes Test.
“Australian management has requested the Marylebone Cricket Club (McC) investigate several incidents involving spectators in the members’ area during lunch on Day Five of the Lord’s Test.”
“It is alleged players and staff from the Australian team were verbally abused, with some being physically contacted, as they made their way to lunch through the members’ area,” said the Australian team in an official statement.
Bairstow was on 10 and England were at 193/5 in the 52nd over when he ducked under a bouncer from Cameron Green and inadvertently walked out of his crease. On seeing that, Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey immediately...

London, July 2 (Ians) On Fay Five of the second Ashes Test at Lord’s, England’s wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow was run-out under controversial circumstances in the hosts’ chase of 317, leading to high drama at the iconic venue.
Bairstow was on 10 and England were 193/5 in the 52nd over when he ducked under a bouncer from Cameron Green and inadvertently walked out of his crease. On seeing this, Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey immediately directed an underarm throw after catching the delivery, and jumped in joy after firing an accurate throw towards the stumps.
It led to chaos in the middle as Bairstow believed the ball was dead, with Australia immediately going for an appeal. On-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Chris Gaffaney sent the decision upstairs, where TV umpire Marais Erasmus confirmed Bairstow’s dismissal.
On seeing the out decision, the Australian players celebrated while the crowd began to chant “same old Aussies,...

London, July 1 (Ians) After setting a stiff target of 371, Australia put in a strong bowling performance to leave England at 114/4 at the close of day four’s play in the second Ashes Test at Lord’s on Saturday.
For England, Ben Duckett (50 not out) and captain Ben Stokes (29 not out) shared an unbroken 69-run stand for the fifth wicket after being reduced to 45/4, as the hosts now need 257 more runs for an improbable win on an exciting day five to level the five-game series.
In what was another enthralling day of Test, England pulled things back with the ball to bowl out Australia for 279 in 101.5 overs, with Stuart Broad the pick of the bowlers with 4/65 in 24.5 overs.
But Mitchell Starc’s burst with the new ball, one that accounted for Zak Crawley, caught down leg-side attempting an ambitious flick, and Ollie Pope, cleaned up a fast inswinging beauty, put Australia...

London, July 1 (Ians) Australia’s premier off-spinner Nathan Lyon got a standing ovation from the Lord’s crowd as he came out to bat with a seriously injured calf in his team’s second innings in the ongoing second Ashes Test on Saturday.
In their second innings, Australia were well-placed at 187/2, before falling prey to England’s short-ball ploy and slipping to 264/9 in the final session of day four’s play.
Very few people expected Lyon to walk out to bat after leaving the field on Thursday, with Cricket Australia confirming that the premier off-spinner has suffered a significant right calf strain which could rule him out for the rest of the Ashes, and him arriving at the ground in crutches.
But after Josh Hazlewood fell, broadcast visuals showed Lyon struggling to come down the pavilion steps before limping out to bat. Lyon’s commitment to his team was given...
