In John Carpenter’s horror classic The Thing, R.J. MacReady (Kurt Russell) somberly explains to his tape recorder, “Nobody trusts anybody now, and we’re all very tired.” The now iconic quote summarizes the exhaustive state of sustained paranoia induced by the shape-shifting, extraterrestrial threat that has infiltrated the ranks of an isolated Antarctic research station, seamlessly assuming the identities of its inhabitants.
Isolation, mistrust, and intense paranoia drive Carpenter’s classic 1982 horror movie, heightening the effectiveness of the horror to a tangible degree; and it’s far from the only horror movie to effectively wield paranoia like a sharp blade. This week’s streaming picks highlight intense horror movies that unfurl their unrelenting tension, disorienting distrust, and discomfort through a heavy emphasis on paranoia, whether internal or external.

The V/H/S saga reached a high point in 2023 with V/H/S/85. This Nineties-set instalment, which features work from accomplished directors Jennifer Reeder and Chloe Okuno, was made two years earlier, but some fans will only be getting their hands on it now. Unfortunately, whilst it gets closer to the spirit of early entries in the series and may be seen by some fans as a welcome return to form, it’s unlikely to win over anybody new.
Whereas V/H/S/85 was firmly rooted in the relevant time period and engaged with the condition of the medium at that time, there’s relatively little here to tie it to ’94. Most of the trends it picks up on from that era still apply today, beyond the fact that apes themselves have largely disappeared, so it’s not clear why the title has been chosen. Rather than focusing on anything temporally relevant, the five stories comprising.

I don’t think there’s too many bigger fans of the V/H/S horror anthology franchise than myself. I’ve loved all three that have come before V/H/S/94 – they feature a range of brilliant directors and actors in original and gory short films. I loved that this newest movie would be hitting Shudder in time for Halloween.
We start with what is the wraparound segment ‘Holy Hell’ directed by Knives and Skin director Jennifer Reed. It shows a S.W.A.T. team slowly working their way through a building which is showing on various monitors or TVs, the videotapes that lead to each other segment.
And the first segment is ‘Storm Drain’ directed by newcomer Chloe Okuno. Shown as a TV news reporter and her single camera guy following up on a local mythical creature. There’s...

It's a good time to be an R.L. Stine fan. After adapting his "Cheerleaders" trilogy in 2021, Netflix is back to adapt another "Fear Street" novel, this time as a standalone movie. Stine himself announced the news on X/Twitter yesterday:
"A new 'Fear Street' movie is about to go into production for Netflix. It's based on my 'Fear Street' book, 'The Prom Queen.' Good news!"
The 1992 novel takes place once again in the appropriately-named town of Shadyside. The town's high school has prom coming up, and there are five potential Prom Queen candidates in the running. But somebody starts killing the girls one by one, and it's up to main character Lizzie McVay to get to the bottom of things before she herself is murdered. In 2022 it was reported that Chloe Okuno (director of "Watcher" and "Slut") had closed a deal to direct the next "Fear Street" movie,...

Finally, however, we’ve been getting bits and pieces of information about the fourth movie, which is currently beginning pre-production in Canada – we also know it’ll be adapting the 15th book from R.L Stine’s vast library.
As a quick recap, Fear Street Parts One, Two, and Three were all released on Netflix over the summer of 2021, having previously been set up in development at 20th Century Fox.

All six filmmakers participate for their respective segments: Maggie Levin for “Shredding,” Johannes Roberts for “Suicide Bid,” Flying Lotus for “Ozzy’s Dungeon,” Tyler MacIntyre for “The Gawkers,” and Vanessa & Joseph Winter for “To Hell and Back.”
Here are seven things I learned from the V/H/S/99 commentary…
1. The film almost didn’t have a wraparound story.
Wraparound segments are traditionally used to make an anthology feel of one piece rather than a random collection of shorts, but the producers originally intended to forgo the framing device on V/H/S/99.
It was later decided to use the increasingly ambitious stop-motion...

Jackass Forever (Jeff Tremaine)
Jackass has been in our lives for more than two decades. Since October 2000, when the original show premiered on MTV, Johnny Knoxville and his gaggle of goofballs have appealed to lowest-common-denominator comedic impulses. They’ve slammed their testicles into things and had them slammed into by other things. They’ve gleefully dove into danger and gotten legitimately hurt. They’ve aggravated and disturbed an entire generation of people who got Reagan and Clinton elected. But then, for another generation, they brought laughter and some earnest sense of camaraderie. Since the halcyon days of the show (which Knoxville quickly ended himself after the ire of a boomer nation called for censorship), Jackass has endured in cinematic form. The first...

To celebrate the release of Watcher – released on DVD & Blu-ray 6th February – we have a Blu-ray up for grabs!
The debut film from Chloe Okuno is a sleek, remarkably assured thriller that puts a thoroughly modern spin on Hitchcock’s classic Rear Window. Featuring a superb cast including Maika Monroe (It Follows), Karl Glusman (The Neon Demon) and Burn Gorman (The Dark Knight Rises), Watcher was nominated for awards at Sundance and SXSW festivals, and won Best Feature at last year’s Boston Underground Film Festival.
The film features a really outstanding central performance from Monroe (who shot to fame in the horror phenomenon It Follows in 2014), as a young woman who begins to think something is amiss when she spots a lone figure staring at from the window of a neighbouring flat. Recalling Mia Farrow in Rosemary’s Baby, Monroe is note-perfect as a woman in alien surroundings, plagued with lurking anxiety,...

On Friday, Fangoria and Fangoria Studios released their 2023 Chainsaw Award nominations, which recognize outstanding achievements in horror film and television. First established in 1992, the Chainsaw Awards honor works and artists in a genre frequently overlooked by traditional organizations and critics groups. Past recipients include Wes Craven, George A. Romero, Lupita Nyong’o, Anthony Hopkins and Elisabeth Moss.
“Nope,” Jordan Peele’s follow-up to “Us,” received the most nominations of any film in Chainsaw Award contention, with 10 nominations including best wide release movie and best director. Other nominees include “Barbarian,” “Pearl,” “Hellraiser,” “Chucky” and “Yellowjackets.” Fangoria also introduced two new categories this year: Best Short and Best Cinematography.

Every month during 2022, I had a new film competing for my favorite horror film of the year. Significant theatrical experiences like "Barbarian" and "Nope" surprised me with ingenious storytelling. The small screen independent movie experiences with films like "Terrifier 2" and "Bones and All" broke free of my expectations. Even the wide selection of straight-to-streaming movies on my many apps like "Hellraiser," "Prey," and "Fresh" challenged in every way their theatrical counterparts. 2022 was one hell of a year for horror films. We had movies to celebrate, discover, grow reacquainted with, and travel to new territories. It was amazing to see such a variety of genre filmmaking on so many different levels. Here are my favorite horror films of 2022.
Watcher: Director Chloe Okuno's "Watcher," a story about a young actress who moves to a foreign country and believes someone is watching her from the apartments across the street, was a...

Humanity is going to hell in a handbasket. At least, that seems to be the rearview consensus on 2022: a year that saw some things get better, a lot of things get worse, and the consequential uncertainty further taking over politics and pop culture.
Anyone reading this list knows horror movies mean some kind of catharsis. But as worldwide trends get more dreadful year over year, the thematic link between “our trying times” and the satisfaction we get from nightmares playing out onscreen has become stronger and more apparent. Now, perhaps more than ever before, scary movie fans can acutely consider why some new terrors captivate and excite, while others don’t or can’t.
Take last year’s inexplicable cannibalism trend: “Bones and All,” “Fresh,” “Resurrection,” all great movies that make our list. But why did consuming flesh consume our interest? And why did that subject matter so often intersect with sex?...

Last week, news leaked out that Chloe Okuno, who recently made her feature directorial debut with the thriller Watcher, starring Maika Monroe (read our review Here), would be following in the footsteps of Fear Street Part One: 1994, Fear Street Part Two: 1978, and Fear Street Part Three: 1666 director Leigh Janiak to direct a new Fear Street movie for the Netflix streaming service. Syfy Wire has since been able to confirm the scoop that Okuno will be directing a new Fear Street movie, and done one better. Actually two better, as Syfy Wire revealed that they have heard Okuno will be directing a whole trilogy of Fear Street movies, just like Janiak did!
Here’s how they put it: Syfy Wire has confirmed the streaming giant will enter production on a second trilogy of films inspired by the best-selling YA book series from prolific horror author, R.L. Stine. Up-and-coming director Chloe Okuno...

This essay is one of several contributed by filmmakers and actors as part of Variety’s 100 Greatest Movies of All Time package.
It’s an image that is so powerful it’s now seared into our collective memory — a skinny teenage girl in a baby pink prom dress, bathed from head to toe in blood, her eyes wide with cold fury as the school burns around her. In my estimation, few films have reached the heights of Brian De Palma’s classic tale of psychic vengeance.
I can’t exactly remember the first time I saw “Carrie,” only that I was young enough for it to be one of those films that gets under your skin and stays there. It was so beautifully and audaciously filmed, a testament to the boldness and vision of De Palma, where every moment is staged with operatic style. But just as crucially, Stephen King...

As one half of /Film's Scariest Scene Ever Boyz™ with Chris Evangelista, it's my pleasure to present the scariest movie moments of 2022. Yes, they're mostly horror films — but terrifying sequences can exist outside rigid horror boundaries. You might not be shocked to find "Smile" or "Barbarian" mentioned below, but what about the awards contender that starts things off? Or my favorite film of 2022 that no one's talking about coming in at the top spot? It's been a rock-solid year for being scared senseless. Let's go ahead and recount all the extra nightmares that cycled through my head.

After Netflix's "Fear Street" trilogy came and went last year to all sorts of critical and audience acclaim, the streaming giant has made the objectively correct choice to let the scary times keep rolling. Not content to leave the impressively well-realized story (as explained in detail by /Film's Joshua Meyer in his spoiler review) at just three movies, it appears that the next film in this fun new franchise is about to get a big boost in talent behind the camera.
After Leigh Janiak wrote and directed all three of the previous movies, Above the Line (via Bloody Disgusting) reports the exciting news that Chloe Okuna will step into the director's chair to helm the next "Fear Street" film. Director Leigh Janiak and the Netflix streaming service brought us a really fun horror event back in the summer of 2021 with the Fear Street trilogy. Three films that were filming back-to-back-to-back and then released over the course of three weeks – those films being Fear Street Part One: 1994, Fear Street Part Two: 1978, and Fear Street Part Three: 1666. There was always a chance that Fear Street would continue beyond the trilogy, as author R.L. Stine has written over 100 books that have been published under the various Fear Street banners. And now Above the Line has confirmed that another Fear Street movie is in the works at Netflix. This one is set to be directed by Chloe Okuno, who recently made her feature directorial debut with the thriller Watcher, starring Maika Monroe.
Okuno also directed the Storm Drain segment of V/H/S/94 and an episode of Showtime’s Let the Right One In series.

A lonely resting actor in Bucharest becomes more and more disturbed by nearby events and is not reassured by her husband
Not to be confused with the recent Netflix hit series, this is in fact a very solidly engineered Hitchcockian throwback. Company man Karl Glusman and resting actor Maika Monroe are the upwardly mobile young Americans relocating to a Bucharest bolthole boasting a prominent picture window; with hubby out schmoozing clients, his better half has time enough to dwell on a gruesome local murder spree, and the silhouetted figure peering down from an adjacent property. Suspicion shifts and moves closer and closer to home, but on one point Chloe Okuno’s film remains resolute: these characters would have avoided a lot of grief had they invested in net curtains.
As recently as Wes Craven’s Red Eye in 2005, we could take this species of medium-budget runaround for granted. Yet Watcher...

IFC Midnight and Shudder are acquiring North American rights to “Consecration,” a supernatural thriller from AGC Studios. The film boasts a cast that includes Jena Malone of “The Hunger Games” franchise, Danny Huston from “Wonder Woman” and “Children of Men,” and Janet Suzman, a stage and screen doyenne who received an Oscar nomination for her work in “Nicolas and Alexandra.” Christopher Smith (“Detour”) directs from the script he wrote with Laurie Cook (“The Banishing”).

This story about the best film schools in the U.S. first appeared in the College Issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Before diving into this list — TheWrap’s seventh annual film school rankings — keep one critical caveat in mind: The dream campus for one student can turn out to be an academic nightmare for another. It’s all subjective and to some degree a barrel full of apples and oranges. After all, the best schools for learning how to direct aren’t necessarily the best for learning how to write or produce. Just because a college or university has a high number on these pages doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the right place for you.
That said, there is something of a science to how we put together these rankings. For starters, TheWrap reached out to every school listed and collected data points on everything from class size...

"V/H/S/" has been a formidable mainstay in the horror genre ever since its first entry back in 2012. Since then, three sequels have been released, with last year's "V/H/S/ 94" being exclusive to the genre streaming service Shudder. Despite the longevity of the franchise, it has never strayed away from its core creative manta: hire up-and-coming horror directors to direct a found-footage short film, then present them as long-lost videos that connect to a larger story. This draw helped launch the careers of several now-prominent genre directors, such as Radio Silence ("V/H/S/"), Timo Tjahjanto ("V/H/S/ 2"), Justin Benson ("V/H/S/: Viral"), and Chloe Okuno ("V/H/S/ 94").

Anna Kendrick is a woman of many talents — she's a great actor, a fantastic singer, a hilarious Twitter follow, a wonderful Barbie spokesperson, and now she can finally add "director" to her growing list of multi-hyphenates. The star of films like "A Simple Favor," "Pitch Perfect," "Up in the Air," and a flurry of teen films that people mock her for having starred in will be directing, starring in, and producing the true-crime thriller "The Dating Game," based on the real story of 1970s would-be bachelorette Cheryl Bradshaw. The script comes from Ian McDonald, whose original draft "Sheryl & Rodney'' wound up on the prestigious unproduced list of screenplays, The Black List.
For those unaware of the story behind the film, Kendrick's Cheryl Bradshaw was a real-life contestant on "The Dating Game," who ultimately picked contestant number 1, a man by the name of Rodney Alcala. He seemed charming and handsome enough...

Back in April, we heard that Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect) was in advanced talks to star in the true crime serial killer thriller The Dating Game – and at that time, Watcher director Chloe Okuno was attached to direct the film. Well, things have changed since April. Deadline reports that Okuno is no longer involved with The Dating Game, and instead Kendrick will be making her directing debut on this film.
Scripted by Ian MacAllister McDonald, The Dating Game is
based on the stranger-than-fiction true story of Cheryl Bradshaw, who was a bachelorette on the hit 70s TV matchmaking show The Dating Game and chose handsome and funny bachelor number one, Rodney Alcala. But behind Alcala’s charming façade was a deadly secret: he was a psychopathic serial killer.
Stuart Ford’s AGC Studios is financing and producing The Dating Game with Kendrick, BoulderLight Pictures’ J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules, and...

A24 gave their satirical slasher Bodies Bodies Bodies (you can read our 8/10 review at This Link) a wide theatrical release back in August, and now it has been announced that Bodies Bodies Bodies is heading to Blu-ray and DVD on October 18th – so it’s coming home just in time for Halloween. Copies are available for pre-order on Amazon.
A24 first purchased Kristen Roupenian’s Bodies Bodies Bodies spec script back in March of 2018. The script was said to show “heightened sensitivity to character development and social dynamics in a subversive way”, and was described as
a shrewd character study where mystery and deep-seated scares blended in such a way that the company saw an opportunity to make a horror movie that could also be culturally relevant.
The script got some touch-up work from Sarah DeLappe, Chloe Okuno, Joshua Sharp, and Aaron Jackson in the time between acquisition when it...
