"Is this the beginning of something crumbling, or is something that's gonna strengthen [the restaurant industry]." Gravitas Venture has already released this documentary film on VOD already - but we're just now catching up with it. Directed by Peter Ferriero, Sorry We're Closed takes a look into the personal trauma, mental health, and livelihood of some of the best chefs during the hardest time of their careers. In the summer of 2020, restaurants are hit doubly hard by the Covid-19 pandemic as well as the aftermath of George Floyd's murder. Chef Elizabeth Falkner checks in with her restaurateur colleagues across the country to see how they're coping, and whether or not they're able to keep on cooking. The film features appearances by Chef Elizabeth, Dominique Crenn, Nancy Silverton, Ann Kim, Gerald Sombright, Maneet Chauhan, and many more chefs from around the nation. This won the Best Feature Documentary award from the Pasadena Film Festival a few months ago.

Exclusive: Fatima Ali, a viewer favorite on Top Chef who died of bone cancer in 2019, is among a handful of subjects of documentary Her Name Is Chef.
Virgil Films & Entertainment will premiere the film in virtual cinemas March 26 before a digital HD release on April 27 and a DVD rollout on May 11.
The film examines gender equality in the restaurant business through interviews conducted by Leia Gaccione, herself a chef. Along with Ali, the film features Elizabeth Falkner, Hillary Sterling, Esther Choi, Juliet Masters and Caroline Schiff. Instead of the more straightforward look at female chefs initially planned, Her Name Is Chef took on a different shape in light of Ali’s illness and death. While it is not a solo portrait of Ali, her legacy is woven through much of the film.

At the annual Cool Comedy – Hot Cuisine New York gala, comedians, celebrities and supporters raised over $1 million for scleroderma research, a complex autoimmune disease that disproportionately affects women, usually striking in the prime of their lives.

Cooking competitions have had mixed success on network television. The Taste on ABC can hardly be considered a hit but it's survived for three seasons. Meanwhile, The American Baking Competition on CBS was dropped after one. How will Food Fighters perform for NBC? Will it be renewed for a second season or will it be cancelled instead? Stay tuned to find out.
On Food Fighters, home cooks compete with professional chefs to see who can make the cook's signature dish the best. The game show is hosted Adam Richman and the pro chefs include Cat Cora, Elizabeth Falkner, Duff Goldman, Lorena Garcia, Jet Tila, and G. Garvin.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings...

Patrick Duffy says he'd like to participate in a Step by Step reunion movie and that it would be interesting to see how the Lambert family grew up. I just hope such a series spawns a serious topical drama that desperately adds a laugh track when ratings tank, giving the Tgif generation a The Bradys of their own.
You've seen me complain that the dark side of a golden age of television is a too-full DVR that make it challenging to keep up with all the good shows (as well as the guilty pleasures and hate watching) available. It also means that shows like Southland and Switched at Birth don't quite get the attention they deserve. I'm still looking for time to get caught up on Game of Thrones, much less time to get to that third episode of Top of the Lake.

A new Iron Chef has been crowned, and celebratory spoilers are being served.
On the finale of Next Iron Chef Super Chefs (Sunday, Food Network; series completed), the Chairman's challenge -- pressure -- lived up to its threat. Aside from the coveted title being at stake -- who doesn't want to be in the Chairman's stable? -- there were "surprises" promised. Or threatened, depending on your point of view.
The contest boiled down to an east coast/west coast thang with New York-based chef Geoffrey Zakarian going mano a womano with San Francisco treat Elizabeth Falkner. Best known as a pastry chef, Falkner's facile hand with weird ingredients, such as tuna jerky soufflé and bagel ice cream, took her to the culinary version of an Ultimate Fighting Championship. But Zakarian, a master of Mediterranean cuisine, was ready to inflict the kind of damage a truckload of Hello Kitty bandages wouldn't fix.

Who: Elizabeth Falkner: San Francisco celebrity chef, Citizen Cake and Orson founder and "The Next Iron Chef" runner-up.
Years in Sf: 25 years
Current Gig: Falkner became "The Next Iron Chef" runner-up on Sunday night, focusing the spotlight squarely on San Francisco. But with the sudden closure of both of her restaurants -- Citizen Cake and Orson -- the local dining scene is wondering what's next for our culinary star.
Elizabeth, on Sunday, you competed in the finale of "The Next Iron Chef," with Geoffrey Zakarian taking the prize. What's it like competing on a show like that? It's totally fun, but it's insane at the same time. It's a completely different environment than working in a restaurant. In the kitchen, if one of your chefs is going down in flames, you're not going to let them just burn up in the corner -- you're going to help them get it together.

With Iron Chefs Masaharu Morimoto and Bobby Flay joining the judging panel for this season finale, the tension was never higher in Kitchen Stadium on the finale of "The Next Iron Chef: Super Chefs" (Sun., 9Pm Et On Food). It was an exciting venue for the two remaining finalists, Elizabeth Falkner and Geoffrey Zakarian.
!!Spoiler Alert!!
Christmas was the theme of the day, with the Chairman throwing plenty of surprises at them along the way. At one point, they pulled in former competitor Alex Guarnaschelli to assist briefly, but in the end it was down to these two world-class chefs.
With a dramatic flourish, the curtain dropped to reveal the winner of the season: Chef Geoffrey Zakarian. "It's extremly humbling to be an Iron Chef," he said, surrounded by his fellow Iron Chefs. "To be in this group is very gratifying to me."

'Iron Chef' winner: Did Geoffrey Zakarian or Elizabeth Falkner win 'The Next Iron Chef: Super Chefs'
Geoffrey Zakarian took the prize on Sunday's Dec. 18 "The Next Iron Chef: Super Chefs" finale, beating out Elizabeth Falkner.
Noted chefs Bobby Flay and Masaharu Morimoto joined Michael Symon and Judy Joo as judges, while the contestants competed to continue on to "Iron Chef America."
Zakarian, a New York chef who had competed in "Iron Chef: America" and served as a judge on "Chopped," won the Heat and Meat challenge and the Hamptons Beach Cookout. Meanwhile, Falkner, who is based in San Francisco, won the Movie Theater challenge and the Food Auction challenge. Her experience as the executive pastry chef of Citizen Cake and the executive chef at Orson gave her an edge... though clearly not quite the edge Zakarian's Hello Kitty bandages gave him.
Do you think the best chef won? Weigh in below in the comments section.

On Next Iron Chef: Super Chefs (Sun, 9 p.m. Et, Food Network), the remaining chefs -- Geoffrey Zakarian, Michael Chiarello, Elizabeth Falkner, and Alex Guarnaschelli -- faced freaky chefonomics: each got $500 and two hours to make a three-course seafood menu for 20 Hamptons residents. The result would subtract not one but two chefs.
To make the challenge a little more, well, challenging, the chefs had to cook outdoors. Chiarello got burned, Falkner worried about losing a finger due to jostling, Guarnaschelli tore a lobster limb from spiny limb, and Zakarian sported a number of Hello Kitty bandages.
Guarnaschelli presented the judges with raw fluke with tomato jam, smoked clam chowder, and lobster hollandaise, which showed her passion for nose to tail cooking. The judges -- Iron Chef Michael Symon, Iron Chef America Judy Joo, and Simon Majumdar -- served warm praise and...

var brightcovevideoid = '1247033368001'; Talk about making something out of nothing! On the season premiere of The Food Network's The Next Iron Chef: Super Chefs, the 10 contestants are brought out to the middle of nowhere, where they're divided into two-person teams and told to build a fire and cook a meal using minimal supplies. Check out this exclusive clip of the chefs battling heat and wind in a desert-like setting as they prepare their dishes. "We are working under extreme conditions in the wilderness," contestant Anne Burrell says. "The level of the cooking that is happening is some of the best ever.

Understatement alert: This wasn't Seth Caro's week on Top Chef: Just Desserts. On Wednesday's episode, the New York-based pastry chef suffered quite the emotional breakdown. There were tears, plus paranoia, crumbled desserts and self-pity - and the derision of his costars. The drama started immediately when the chefs were asked to make a dish celebrating penny candy for their Quickfire challenge. For Seth, the challenge was apparently an emotional one. In fact, he ended up doubled over in tears under his kitchen workspace. Related: Top Chef Fan Favorites Returning for All-Stars CompetitionThe chef explained that...

In our annual Visibility Awards, we formally recognize the people who have positively or negatively impacted lesbian and bi visibility in American entertainment during the year. (See previous years here: 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004.)
From Best Movie to Worst Song to Lesbian/Bi Woman of the Year, these awards recognize the television shows, movies, music, books and people who entertained, inspired, or disappointed us in 2009.
Last year, some of the category winners were chosen by both the AfterEllen.com staff and AfterEllen.com readers. This year, AfterEllen.com staff and contributing writers chose the winners for each category, as readers will be given the opportunity to vote on a wider range of topics and categories in our first annual Lesbian/Bi Women's Choice Awards in January.
Once again this year, we've included international people, shows and movies as a reflection of the increasing awareness of lesbian and bisexual visibility around the world made possible by the Internet.

Bravo's Top Chef Masters airs again tonight. Bravo fired over some clips from the action as the chefs are operating on an extremely tight budget and must create the perfect amuse bouche using only what they can find in a vending machine (a la Top Chef season 2). Master chefs Wylie Dufresne, Suzanne Tracht, Graham Elliot Bowles and Elizabeth Falkner find themselves .lost. as they are challenged to make a meal inspired by the hit TV show, using ingredients such as fish, wild boar, fresh fruits, and other island specialties. "Lost" co-creators, executive producers and writers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof guest star, and one chef moves on to the Champions Round. Vending Machine Amuse Bouche:...

Lesbian/bi visibility on primetime American television this summer is not much better than it is the rest of the year — which is to say, it's pretty slim pickings.
Among the shows premiering or returning in the next few weeks, there are a few with supporting lesbian/bi characters (Mental, The Closer); one with an out actress in a supporting role (Hawthorne); and a reality show featuring two out female contestants (Top Chef Master).
Here's a review of the pilot or first new episode(s) of all four series, and a short list of the premiere/air dates of other shows that may interest you.
Warning: some mild spoilers, but no major plot points revealed
Mental (Drama, Fox)
Dates: Tuesdays at 9pm Pst/Est, premiering May 26
Cast: Chris Vance (Prison Break), Annabella Sciorra (Queens Supreme, The L Word), Derek Webster (Stargate), Jacqueline McKenzie (4400), Marisa Ramirez (General Hospital), Nicholas Gonzalez (CSI: Miami...
