It’s senior year for the infamous teenage faction heads who rule Haldwell right under its custodians’ noses—the final two semesters to ready the successors they’ve handpicked to continue stewarding the longstanding legacy of extracurricular opportunities their tandem organizations have provided this east coast boarding school’s student body for decades. The passing of the batons proves even more crucial for this graduating class, though, because of the ever-present desire to stop their behind the scenes activities by a newly instated headmaster (Jesse Williams) uninterested in turning a blind eye their way. Everything must therefore be perfectly planned and executed whether their senior prank, their usual series of clandestine parties, or their unfettered supply chain of the best narcotics a private campus student’s parents’ money can buy.

Amazon Studios has released the official trailer for writer/director Tayarisha Poe’s feature film debut, “Selah and the Spades,” which made its world premiere as a Next selection at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. Set in the closed world of an elite Pennsylvania boarding school, the Haldwell, where the student body is run by five factions, the film stars a young impressive cast of fresh new faces, including Lovie Simone as the titular Selah Summers. She’s joined by Celeste O’Connor, Jharrel Jerome, Jesse Williams, Gina Torres, and Ana Mulvoy Ten.
Of the Haldwell student body’s five factions — The Spades, The Sea, The Skins, The Bobbies, and The Prefects factions — Selah runs the most dominant, The Spades, who cater to the most classic of vices and supply students with coveted, illegal alcohol and pills. ABC has released the episode description for its American Crime TV show's season three finale. The question remains: will this also be the TV series finale? Executive producer Michael McDonald previously said if the crime anthology is renewed for a fourth season, it will focus on women in the workplace and sexual harassment. However, the third season, which centers on undocumented workers, drugs, and human trafficking has not fared well in the Nielsen ratings, so the series is likely to be cancelled.American Crime stars Regina King, Felicity Huffman, Connor Jessup, Richard Cabral, and Benito Martinez. It’s funny how time can change your perception on things. Back in 2014, I moderated a post-screening panel for the documentary film and festival favorite, “Food Chains.” Producers Sanjay Rawal (who also directed), Smriti Kasahari, and Eva Longoria were all on hand to discuss how their film documented criminal labor practices in the U.S. food industry. “Food Chains” focused on farmers who hire illegal immigrants and drive them into debt, claiming their hourly wages, production, and general efforts to make an honest living don’t cover the costs of feeding and housing these workers.
Even though the food is slop and the housing just a crate packed with 20 men, no one questions the system because they can’t. There’s nowhere for workers to go and no one they can call for help. They live in fear of being deported or of their bosses — who physically and mentally abuse them,...

John Ridley’s crime drama anthology series, American Crime is back for a third season and it remains the superbly written piercing examination of American life that’s electrified the small screen for the last two years. This time we’re introduced to the North Carolina farmlands that house a significant amount of undocumented migrant workers. Forced to work themselves to exhaustion in terrible conditions, their wages are garnished to pay for their debts to the owners. Keeping the workers in perpetual servitude, these so called debts are meant to pay for their even more horrendous living conditions and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
American Crime is a bold series unafraid of packing multiple tough controversial issues into its narratives and season 3 seems to be no different. Not only do we see the way migrant workers get trapped, but that...

In a story that explores how both power dynamics and past traumas can affect the creative process, Marya Cohn’s “The Girl in the Book” is a remarkable, ambitious directorial debut. Emily VanCamp stars as Alice Harvey, a young woman working in the New York publishing industry, and Ana Mulvoy-Ten plays Alice fifteen years ago, caught up in a complicated, abusive relationship with an older writer, Milan Daneker (Michael Nyqvist). The fallout from that relationship has followed Alice into her adult life, manifesting itself in her bad habits, writer's block and relationships with men. It all comes rushing back when Alice has to work on the re-release of “Waking Eyes,” the book that made Daneker famous, in which he captures “the essence of a teenage girl,” a “female Holden Caulfied.” When he re-enters her life, he wants to tenderly reminisce about old times, which is pure hell for Alice. She...
