Hallmark Channel to adapt The Chicken Sisters as a series
Hallmark Channel has had much success with its original series, including When Calls the Heart, The Way Home, and more. Now, a brand new series is heading to the feel-good channel, based on the 2020 novel “The Chicken Sisters,” written by K.J.
Dell’Antonia. Starring Schuyler Fisk, Genevieve Angelson, Lea Thompson, and Wendie Malick. Meanwhile, Annie Mebane is the showrunner of the series and executive producer of the eight episodes.
New Hallmark Channel series The Chicken Sisters
The Chicken Sisters is a family drama, set in the fictional town of Merinac. Here, a generations-old rift continues between two fried chicken restaurants, Mimi’s and Frannie’s.
This has left the founders’ families fractured, while locals in the town started taking sides. However, when a popular cooking show comes to town, things get even more complicated as sparks begin to fly and secrets are uncovered.

"You run out on every guy you've ever been with!" Decal Releasing has unveiled the trailer for a romantic comedy called Which Brings Me To You, arriving in theaters in January 2024 next month. It's from the same filmmaker who previously made the romcoms Then Came You and The Hating Game, and this one will probably be just like those two. Lucy Hale and Nat Wolff star in this hilarious tale of love and disaster. Two romantic burnouts meet at a wedding and almost hook up in the coatroom before putting the brakes on. They agree to exchange candid confessions about their pasts on the off chance that this might be the real thing. "Trading candid confessions of messy histories and heartbreak" - revisiting their own "past lives" on screen. The film's supporting cast includes John Gallagher Jr., Ward Horton, Genevieve Angelson, Alexander Hodge, Britne Oldford, Marceline Hugot, and Laura Kai Chen.

By the time the fifth season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” rolls around, Serena Joy Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski) is already in dire straits. Still stuck in a detention facility in Canada, she has lost most of her allies, as well as her power and status in Gilead. But it’s after she learns that her husband, Fred (Joseph Fiennes), has been murdered that her world truly comes crashing down, as she’s left to fend for herself and her unborn child, in a foreign country and with the lingering fear that her former handmaid June (Elisabeth Moss) — who, alongside a group of other erstwhile handmaids, is responsible for Fred’s murder — could come for her next. While the grieving, desperate widow summons June to the battlefield in an act of retaliation, her main goal going forward, Strahovski argues, is to keep her head above water.

[This story contains major spoilers from the season five finale of The Handmaid’s Tale, “Safe.”]
After beginning its current season with the smirk seen ’round the globe, The Handmaid’s Tale ended with another telling expression.
The fifth season of Hulu’s dystopian series began by pitting June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) against Serena Joy Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski). At the end of the two-episode premiere, Serena had brought June’s Gilead-captive daughter, Hannah (Jordana Blake), into view during a global broadcast of the funeral for her late husband, Commander Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) — and shot the camera a knowing smirk intended for June. Thousands of miles away in Canada, June received the message loud and clear.
But the world of The Handmaid’s Tale moves quickly and, by the pivotal seventh episode, June was faced with the impossible choice of helping Serena deliver her newborn baby or letting her die when the pair were stranded together in No Man’s Land,...

To stay in business over a long time, a series has to evolve. I understand that. But reinvention is tricky and in the search for more road, a series can also lose its way. The Handmaid’s Tale is not the taut, menacing thriller it once was.

Don’t celebrate yet. Don’t you know what show you’re in? Until Hannah is stretched out on your couch tossing M&Ms into her mouth, sharing TikTok videos on her phone and groaning when you ask her how school is, she’s not home. A lot can go wrong between ‘The US army has planned a raid’ and a happy ending – maybe save dancing to The Cure and hugging grocery clerks until your girl’s out of Gilead.
However Season 5’s ‘get Hannah’ storyline ends, happy is guaranteed not to be the sum total of it. It never is on The Handmaid’s Tale, a drama powered by emotional complexity. If June and Luke get Hannah back, she won’t just be a nearly-teenager (challenging enough to parent), she’ll be a nearly-teenager ripped from everything she’s known,...

Alanis Wheeler showed her true colors — turns out, they’re all teal! — in this week’s The Handmaid’s Tale.
The episode found the Gilead-sympathizing Canadian lashing out at her houseguest, Serena, when she mentioned that she might not want to remarry anytime in the near future. This was seen as anathema by the young ideologue, who’d previously put the pregnant Mrs. Waterford on a very high pedestal. As Alanis’ anger increased, she eventually ordered Serena to go to her room, cementing something Serena must’ve feared for a while: She’s essentially the Wheelers’ handmaid. (Read a full recap.

Get in, loser: We’re going to subvert a theocracy?
Ok, that’s not exactly the gist of what happens at the end of this week’s very exciting Handmaid’s Tale. But we do have Serena killing someone who was about to kill June, then ordering June to hop in a car with her and drive. So, until next week’s episode proves me wrong, I’m going to live in a fantasy world in which Mrs. Waterford and the Artist Formerly Known as Offred pull some Thelma & Louise-type shenanigans.

Warning: contains spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale season 5 episode 4 ‘Dear Offred’.
Introducing Fred and Serena’s Canadian fan club was one of The Handmaid’s Tale’s most grimly realistic and cruel surprises. The whole time we were trapped in Gilead with June, we’d been led to see Canada as the promised land. If only June could get over that border, she’d be able to leave the zealotry and false piety behind. Waiting for June in Canada was political, religious and sexual freedom – all the marks of a progressive society.
Then, the Waterfords walked out of their war crimes trial and were greeted by a bunch of candle-bearing dupes who’d chosen to martyr these rapists and make them their new celebrity It Couple. With them came a gut-punch realisation. What was waiting for June in Canada? More of the damn same.
After all, Gilead wasn’t only established via military might.

I was pleased to see that The Americans masterminds Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields were teaming up again to create the new psychological drama The Patient, and that Steve Carell had signed on to star. But the moment that really made me happy? When I saw that the premiere episode was only 21 minutes long. (I may have actually muttered “Hallelujah” under my breath.)
In this era of Too Much TV, every minute is precious, and it’s a blessing to see a drama decide to tell its story economically, rather than bloating every episode out to an hour-plus with unnecessary subplots.

There's a Serena storm brewing on The Handmaid's Tale. With the knowledge that season five of the Hulu drama, premiering September 14, highlights the rise in popularity of Serena (Yvonne Strahovski), we now know she's getting reinforcements in the form of The Afterparty star Genevieve Angelson. Angelson will play "Mrs. Wheeler, an affluent Canadian who idolizes Serena and who is a driving force behind the rise of Gilead in Toronto," according to TVLine. The actress confirmed the news on Twitter July 14, posting a photo of herself in the trademark teal of the commanders' wives on Handmaid's, with the caption: "Blessed be the project reveal @HandmaidsOnHulu...

Steve Carell is used to dealing with difficult personalities on TV — but his new role on Hulu’s The Patient is on a whole other level.
In a new trailer for the psychological thriller, which you can watch above, the former Office star plays Alan Strauss, a therapist who helps his patients deal with their conflicting emotions… even as he has a few of his own. (He and his wife are now sleeping in separate beds, for example.) He has one particular patient, a troubled young man named Sam (Domhnall Gleeson), who is desperate for Alan’s counsel: “I’m not normal…...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for New Amsterdam Season 4, Episode 16 “All Night Long.”] A New Amsterdam-Urgent Medicine karaoke night takes a very serious turn in the first new episode of the NBC drama since February 22. Dr. Elizabeth Wilder (Sandra Mae Frank) organizes the night out at the bar, and everyone takes a turn on the stage. She and Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) team up for a duet, as do Dr. Lauren Bloom (Janet Montgomery) and Casey Acosta (Alejandro Hernandez) and Dr. Floyd Reynolds (Jocko Sims) and Dr. Iggy Frome (Tyler Labine). Dr. Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman), visiting from London, sings a solo. But it’s not all fun. By the end of the episode, the following day, Helen, Wilder, Casey, Trevor Vaughn (Ryan Faucett), and Dr. Mia Castries (Genevieve Angelson) are all Mia. “There is a very clear reason why certain people were targeted, and it’s hopefully surprising,” executive producer David Schulner tells TV Insider. “But if ...

“The Afterparty” on Apple TV Plus is a wildly ambitious storytelling exercise; over the course of its eight episode run, the series’ first season tells the story of a high school reunion that ends in murder in wildly different genres, as the various suspects recount their recollections of the night through the lens of their own worldviews. And in order to successfully embody the different genres, be they rom-com or thriller, the show needs to adapt itself to every episode: a single moment might be romantic one episode or comical the next, through the use of music and editing to change the mood of the scene.
The music of “The Afterparty” is composed by Daniel Pemberton, who came to the project after working with creator and director Christopher Miller and executive producer Phil Lord on the critically acclaimed animated film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” He was attracted to working on...

Welcome to a very millennial murder mystery.
The Afterparty Season 1 Episode 1 is a light-hearted, breezy take on the murder mystery. Many of the tropes are present, but the stacked cast, as well as the execution (pun intended), keep it engaging and dynamic.
Playing the untimely death of a celebrity for laughs may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I'm here for it.
The concept is that each episode will contain a witness account told in a different style/genre of film. In Episode 1, we get two.
One comes from Indigo (played to pretentious perfection by Genevieve Angelson), who tells her version of events as a high-concept, black-and-white art film.
This is more than a prank. This is a metaphor for society’s illusion of stability.

Described as a “genre-defying series,” Apple TV+’s “The Afterparty” features a murderer’s row of comedic talent, all joined together for creator and sole director Chris Miller’s murder mystery. Set on the night of a 15-year high school reunion where a murder has occurred, nearly every segment in the eight-episode season (of which seven were provided for this review) comes from the perspective of one of the night’s attendees. That individual provides testimony to the detective on the case — Detective Danner (Tiffany Haddish) — who considers these accounts “mind movies.” According to Danner, “we’re all the stars of our own movie” — which creates the basic angle of the series.
Based on these individual episode-length “mind movies,” “The Afterparty” sets out to build a complete picture of what actually happened on the night of the murder of a high-profile celebrity (and the suspects’ former classmate), Xavier (Dave Franco...

We should all be so lucky to have Tiffany Haddish sit us down for an unauthorized police interrogation, and stipulate that our witness statements be delivered in the form of a specific movie genre. What fun! Except she’s Tiffany Haddish, and she suffers fools the way giraffes suffer pesky insects—with a huff and a slap. “The Afterparty,” the new Apple TV+ series from Chris Miller, is stocked with fools, so Haddish has her work cut out for her, which means we have the pleasure of watching her raise eyebrows at an ensemble comprising Sam Richardson, Ben Schwartz, Ilana Glazer, Zoë Chao, Ike Barinholtz, John Early, Dave Franco, Tiya Sircar, and Genevieve Angelson as self-centered neurotics each suspected of murder most foul.

By the time the credits roll at the end of this week’s This Is Us, you’ll either be supremely bummed or significantly uplifted. After the year we’ve had/are having, I’m choosing the latter.
The hour focuses on Nicky, both in the present and throughout his very sad past. It’s one thing to know that his Vietnam War experience scarred and shaped Jack’s brother’s life in profound and lasting ways. It’s another thing to watch that play out in a series of near-misses, poor choices and deep regrets that pile up as the years pass.

Last spring, with film screens dimmed and a disproportionate number of folks left with extra time to fill, the TV world was ready to be an escape vehicle. Plenty of people stuck to the recent classics or embarked on catch-up projects, but for people trying to tackle the slew of new releases, there was plenty of room to fully embrace a different kind of darkness than the one happening outside their doors.
While “Flack” may not have gruesome killings or spawn Change.org petitions, the razor-like sensibilities of the celebrity-centered drama might be just the turn-into-the-skid entertainment to light a spark underneath Amazon Prime Video’s 2021 programming slate. Originally a 2019 premiere on erstwhile “Schitt’s Creek” home network Pop, the show centers on Robyn (Anna Paquin), a main employee at a crisis PR firm tasked with cleaning up the messes of star athletes, actresses, and public figures, who all have something to sponge from the headlines.

Anna Paquin’s dark comedy drama Flack may well find another home in the U.S. after it was abruptly pulled by Pop TV.
Yesterday, it emerged that the ViacomCBS-backed network was pulling three of its five original series, including Flack, Florida Girls and Best Intentions. Flack was set to launch its second season on Pop on March 13.
However, Jimmy Mulville, who runs Flack producer Hat Trick Productions, told Deadline that he was “confident” of finding a new Stateside home for the series, which is co-produced by Paquin and Stephen Moyer’s Casm Films. A co-production with British broadcaster UKTV, it will still air on UKTV’s W network in March.
“It’s sad to end the show on Pop, the first season did well for them and UKTV,” said Mulville. “I’m confident that we’ll be able to find another home for the show. There’s no shortage of platforms.

Titans Season 2 Episode 6
With nary a mention of him since his tease at the end of season one, Conner Kent swoops into Titans with a great episode that’s charming, sweet, and exciting for what it sets up for the series. Oh, and Krypto!
Picking up after the stinger scene from last season’s finale, “Conner” has a bare-assed Lex Luthor/Superman clone busting himself, and Krypto the Super-Dog out of Luthor’s Cadmus Labs. What follows is a road-trip of self-discovery as the young naïve boy learns his powers, taps into his anger, and hopefully develop into a good person.
I really commend Joshua Orpin on his performance as Conner. Playing a full-grown adult newborn is a minefield because it tiptoes along the lines of some very well-tread tropes.
