Exclusive: Warner Bros has Paul Thomas Anderson set to direct Oscar winners Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn as well as Regina Hall in an untitled film that will begin production this year in California. Anderson wrote the script, and he will produce the film with Sara Murphy and Adam Somner.
The film is currently untitled and they’re keeping the logline under wraps. We have learned that it is a contemporary setting and it is the most commercial one PTA has attempted, with commensurate budget. It came out of a relationship that Warner Bros Picture Group co-chairs/CEOs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy built making PTA’s last film, Licorice Pizza, while they ran MGM. That film got three Oscar noms for Best Picture, and Best Screenplay and Best Director for PTA.

Sold for a whopping 10 million to Fox Searchlight at Sundance back in ’17, Patti Cake$ became a major calling card for Geremy Jasper — and that forward momentum brought it to the Cannes Film Festival’s closing the Director’s Fortnight section that same year. Jasper doesn’t only write screenplays but lyrics too – and this will be the case once again with O’Dessa (and with co-writer Jason Binnick) – his sophomore project which would have gone into production this past May. Searchlight re-teamed with the filmmaker and there is probably no rush to premiere the film at Sundance but it’s a definite possibility with a line-up of Regina Hall, Sadie Sink, Kelvin Harrison Jr.…...

When IndieWire conducted its annual survey of all the cameras used by cinematographers at the Sundance Film Festival, a striking trend quickly emerged: Over 75 percent of the DPs with narrative films at the festival utilized either the Arri Alexa Mini or its large format sibling, the Alexa Mini Lf, as their camera of choice. The Mini was introduced in 2015 as a compact version of the Alexa designed primarily for use on drones and gimbals, but its combination of a traditional Alexa sensor with increased mobility eventually led to its use as the A camera on Hollywood studio movies like “A Star is Born” and “Get Out” — and now, it seems, for a majority of cinematographers in the independent realm.
The Mini’s presence in independent film began to be felt at Sundance’s 2017 iteration, where festival favorites “Patti Cake” and “Thoroughbreds,” among others, were captured with the camera. “It was a very ambitious shoot,...

Fresh from Fox Searchlight’s exuberant Oscar celebration for Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” (six wins) and Martin McDonagh’s “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” (two wins), Sean Berney is leaving his post as director of acquisitions to join Netflix’s original films division. After its stunning Oscar run, Searchlight is expected to make a smooth transition to new Fox owner Disney, which does not have a specialty distribution arm and might want a presence at the Oscars. However, that’s not guaranteed and the division’s trajectory remains unclear, which...

Guillermo Del Toro takes home the top prize at the Directors Guild AwardsGuillermo Del Toro takes home the top prize at the Directors Guild AwardsAdriana Floridia2/5/2018 10:30:00 Am
We know who to put on our Oscar ballot for Best Director.
At this rate, it would be shocking if anyone other than Guillermo Del Toro went home with that prize come Oscar night. He has been winning again and again for his film The Shape of Water, and that trend continued when he won the DGA on Saturday night from the Directors Guild of America.
A visionary filmmaker ever since audiences were first introduced to him with Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth, this is the year for Del Toro, and we're very excited for him. The other big winner of the night in the film categories was Jordan Peele, who took home Best First Time Director for Get Out.

Greta Gerwig and Jordan Peele both land DGA NominationsGreta Gerwig and Jordan Peele both land DGA NominationsAdriana Floridia1/11/2018 1:47:00 Pm
Today the Directors Guild of America announced their 2018 nominees.
It's a pretty big deal, because the winner of the DGA prize often goes on to also win Best Director at the Oscars. We certainly hope that two directors that have been underdogs in this race, Get Out's Jordan Peele and Lady Bird's Greta Gerwig, see the same recognition there.
It's very significant that Gerwig landed this nomination. The Golden Globes and the BAFTAs received backlash for nominating only men for their director prizes, in a year where there were many worthy women. Gerwig is only the eighth woman to be nominated for Feature Film Director by the DGA, and Peele, who is nominated both for Feature Film and for First Time Feature, is only the fourth black director to be nominated.

The Directors Guild of America has announced its nominees for the 70th Annual DGA Awards in the feature film categories, including both feature film and first-film feature film. Heavy hitters like Guillermo del Toro (his first DGA nod) and Christopher Nolan (his fourth) made the cut, along with awards season favorites like Greta Gerwig for her “Lady Bird” and Jordan Peele for his “Get Out,” who pulled in nominations in both categories. Other first-timers of note include Aaron Sorkin and Taylor Sheridan, who both made the jump to directing with their newest features, along with “Lady Macbeth” helmer William Oldroyd and “Patti Cake$” director Geremy Jasper.
Notable missing names include Steven Spielberg for his “The Post,” Denis Villeneuve for his “Blade Runner 2049,” and Ridley Scott for his “All the Money in the World,” all of whom have received best director nods during the season from various guilds and voting bodies.

Just a few moments ago, the 2017 Film Independent Spirit Award nominations were revealed to the public, continuing on with Phase One of the awards season. This precursor marks another new point in the race, as many of these movies nominated today will be contending for Oscar attention as well. Removed from the Academy Award race though, this is just a great precursor because of what it nominates. The films are small in budget and often need a leg up, so this is a spotlight on what the viewing public should be searching out in theaters and at home on Blu-Ray or VOD. Congrats to the nominees and read on to see who and what they were… You’ll see all of the nominees below, but as you’ll be able to tell, it appears to be a race between Call Me By Your Name, The Florida Project, Get Out, and Lady Bird,...

Danielle Macdonald stars as an unlikely rapper in a feelgood film with attitude whose characters all convince
As generous and fleshed-out as its lead character, 25-year-old aspiring rapper Patricia Dombrowski (Australian actor Danielle Macdonald), aka Patti Cake$, aka Killa P, this first feature from writer/director/composer Geremy Jasper is a triumphant air punch of a movie. The fact that it is a formulaic underdog story – poor, white and podgy, Patti is not obvious rap star material – which dutifully hits all the required story beats, matters less than you would imagine. This is what feelgood cinema looks like and it’s plus-size, trashy and full of attitude.
Jasper brings a music video aesthetic of neon, graffiti and bling into a story that regularly trips out into Patti’s vivid daydreams. But the real strength of the film is in the writing. Not just the characters, but also the complex relationships...

Stars: Danielle Macdonald, Bridgett Everett, Siddharth Dhananjay, Mamoudou Athie, Cathy Moriarty | Written and Directed by Geremy Jasper
Written, directed and largely composed by Geremy Jasper, a New Jersey music video director making his first feature, Patti Cake$ is an exceptionally well made film, displaying the sort of rawness and authenticity only possible in street-level filmmaking. It’s a fresh take on some very familiar underdog story traits.
23-year-old Patricia (Danielle Macdonald), Aka Patti, lives a meagre existence of microwave meals, tinned lager and daytime TV. She lives with her mother, Barbara (Bridgett Everett) – a “friend” to many a local gentleman – and her sarcastic, chain-smoking Nana (Cathy Moriarty). Patti dreams of taking the star-studded crown from her hero, O-z (Sahr Ngaujah), and becoming “Killa P”, the sickest rapper on the East Coast. But her reality is merely sick: her family’s declining health is costing them dearly in insurance bills.
