In March 2017, Disney’s live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast opened to a monstrous $357 million globally. It marked the seventh-largest domestic debut ever and the top start for a PG title, eventually finding its place on the list of the highest-grossing films of all time with lifetime box office earnings of $1.27 billion.
Leading up to the release, Disney said the movie represented a massive step forward in visual effects — playing up the CG rendering of Dan Stevens’ Beast — through the use of VFX technology called Mova Contour Reality Capture. “When you see Beast onscreen, there is something so human about him,” said Emma Watson, who played Belle, at a press conference in Paris for the film, noting that the patented tech “really captures the subtlety of Dan’s facial expression.” She stressed, “I don’t think the world has seen anything like it before.”

One of the most interesting developments during the recent part of the precursor season is the surprising strength that Deadpool has shown. From the Golden Globes to the Writers Guild to yesterday the Producers Guild, this odd little blockbuster has popped up in a number of places. Not only has it given rise to plenty of folks speculating about its Oscar chances, some are even making the case that a Best Picture nomination could be coming its way. That’s silly, but it does seem likely that the Academy could nominate the film somewhere. Just a few months ago, that would have been inconceivable. Deadpool is certainly one of the little movies that could this time around. A quick summary, for those still in the dark about it. The flick is perhaps the most meta comic book tale we’ve ever seen. Sure, this is also an origin story about...

It’s been a VFX season dominated by giants in a range of superhero, sci-fi and action-adventures. They include Mark Rylance’s 25-foot dream catcher in “The Bfg,” Christopher Walken’s King Louie in “The Jungle Book,” the heptapods from “Arrival,” the 7-foot K-2So droid from “Rogue One” and the Moon Beast and Skeleton from “Kubo and the Two Strings.”
Whittling down the preliminary list of 20 contenders to 10 for the VFX bake-off on January 7th won’t be easy. There is so much outstanding work. Yet the great hybrid achievement of Disney’s “The Jungle Book” makes it the favorite, and “Rogue One” offers a new, gritty “Star Wars” look that should provide serious consideration. Here’s a list of 10 prime contenders:
1. “The Jungle Book”
Jon Favreau set out to achieve a photo-real Disney adaptation with two-time Oscar-winning VFX supervisor Rob Legato (“Hugo,” “Titanic”). The results are so impressive...

The fight first broke into the open at the 2014 Sci Tech Academy Awards. Digital Domain 3.0 employee Greg Lasalle and three others had just accepted a technical achievement award for their use of Mova, a prized facial-motion-capture technology. Absent from the stage that night was Steve Perlman, a Silicon Valley inventor who owned the patents to the Mova tech and had once employed Lasalle. In a letter to the Sci Tech judges obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, Perlman let loose with a torrent of fury directed mostly at Lasalle, calling him "no more than a trainee"

Colossus proved to be a great foil for Ryan Reynolds' snarky anti-hero in the smash hit "Deadpool," which required a complicated bit of animation by Digital Domain to pull off the 7-foot mutant giant. In fact, Colossus was Frankensteined together with the the help of voice actor Stefan Kapicic, motion capture performer Andrei Tricoteux for fighting, actor T.J. Storm for regular body motion, actor/stunt performer Glenn Ennis for initial facial shapes, and mocap supervisor Greg Lasalle for final facial performance. First-time director Tim Miller (owner of Blur Studio, the VFX/animation/design studio, which also contributed to "Deadpool") envisioned a Colossus very different from the "X-Men" movies. As a nerd, he wanted a return to the comic book look: a bigger body builder type who's Russian but totally photoreal. "For body, we looked at Arnold Schwarzenegger during his body building days, but we wanted him to be much more.

After what seems like decades of waiting (oh wait: it was actually about 10 years!) the Deadpool movie finally opened in theaters this past weekend to the tune of a record-shattering $135 million at the box office; and it was everything I’d hoped for. It was exactly the Deadpool movie that we needed at this point to get the franchise rolling – a dynamic R film that pulls no punches about who Deadpool is and why he’s not a traditional hero, yet invests us in his unorthodox character and worldview and gets us rooting for him anyway. And as I walked out of the theater, despite any minor critiques I may have, I felt distinctly the warm, zen-like glow of happiness from having just experienced the fulfillment of longtime hopes I’ve cherished for the manifestation of just such a Deadpool film.

Over the long holiday weekend, we saw some box office records fall. Yes, Deadpool had one of the very best early year openings ever, setting the mark for the month of February, as well as the one for an R rated feature. Considering what a struggle this was to even see the superhero come to the big screen, this is a massive success. You’ll see all of the numbers below, but while this isn’t something on the level of what Star Wars has done at the box office, it’s still tremendous. Especially when you consider the type of comic book property that this is, it makes the numbers that the film has taken in all the more impressive. Suffice to say, we’ll be seeing a sequel in pretty quick fashion if the powers that be at Fox have anything to do about it. Here’s a quick refresher on the flick,...

Cleverly figuring out the most captivating way to express your intentions and motivations through your emotions and expressions can be a daunting task. But when people are determined to connect with the people they’ve sworn to protect and serve, they can powerfully overcome that and challenge. That’s certainly the case with the cast and crew of the highly anticipated superhero film ‘Deadpool,’ which is based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. The eighth installment in the ‘X-Men’ film series was directed by Tim Miller and written byRhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The action-adventure movie, which is set to be released in theaters on Friday by 20th Century [ Read More ]

When I saw Deadpool at a press screening last week, I was expecting to like it. What I wasn’t expecting was to absolutely love it, wholly and fully. Deadpool is a character I’m indifferent to, but the way he was brought to the screen just made me fall in love with the so called Merc with a Mouth. The antihero is finally getting his own film after star Ryan Reynolds and fans of the character basically demanded it, along with test footage leaking and starting a bit of a frenzy. Well, the end result is an absolute blast. Not only is it easily the best film of the year so far, it’s also one of the best comic book adaptation/superhero movies to date. It opens on Friday and it’s an absolute must see. Trust me folks, you’ve never seen anything like it. The flick...

Although he may be the star of the show, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) won’t be the only iconic super powered Marvel character rampaging through his upcoming solo adventure. As we’ve known for some time, the Merc with the Mouth will also be joined by X-Men Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) and Colossus (Stefan Kapicic/ Greg Lasalle). Colossus is known for his ability to coat his bare skin in a form of protective organic metal, but he won’t be taking down his defenses at any point during Deadpool. Colossus’ facial actor Greg Lasalle spoke recently to Comicbook.com and explained that the character will remain in his metallic form for the duration of the film: Well actually, this film he’s only in his metal form. I don’t know if you knew that. So you won’t see a human ...

And the Oscars go to … the Mat-Towercam Twin Peek, the Biscuit Jr., the Mova Facial Performance Capture System, the Ilm PhysBAM Destruction System and the early conceptualization of sparse-tiled voxel data structures.
That may be Greek to most of us, but it makes sense to the Academy’s Scientific and Technical Awards Committee, which on Tuesday announced that those achievements, and 16 others, will be the recipients of this year’s Scientific and Technical Academy Awards.
