Directed by Joe Dante (Gremlins) with a screenplay by John Sayles (Lone Star) and groundbreaking special effects by Rob Bottin (The Thing, The Fog, Total Recall), The Howling has been stunningly restored for a new generation of horror fans. Mitigating abusive behavior on the Internet is a herculean task, but the European Union (EU) and four major media companies want to try. Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Microsoft have all signed an EU code of conduct that looks to combat digital hate speech.
As reported by The Guardian and others, the code defines hate speech as “all conduct publicly inciting to violence or hatred directed against a group of persons or a member of such a group defined by reference to race, colour, religion, descent or national or ethnic origin.” By signing the code, the four participating tech companies have agreed in principle to combat such conduct whenever it is brought to their attention. The goal is to review all relevant cases in the 24 hours after they are reported and summarily remove or disable all content that is deemed inappropriate.

As much as I hate to admit it now, I didn’t always love Howling II. But over the years, as I’ve revisited this cult classic time and time (and time) again, mostly due to Christopher Lee and his badass punk rock attitude in the film, I’ve grown to appreciate Phillippe Mora’s wonderfully surrealistic take on lycanthropes that feels like a modernized twist on the classic Hammer films I grew up loving. And while it may not be a flawless effort by any means, I can’t help but adore a film that gave us Sybil Danning as Queen of the Werewolves, put Lee in a New Wave night club (complete with zany sunglasses and leather jacket) and also gave the modern lycan mythology a bit of an unexpected twist.

Some horror movies go with a "slow-build" approach, and some go for the jugular right off the bat. The unexpected horror hit "It Follows" definitely falls into the latter category, as you can see in the opening scene embedded below (narrated by director David Robert Mitchell). Are you sufficiently unnerved? Good! That's what we're going for here. As the indie horror hit prepares to expand into over 1,600 theaters this weekend, below I've ranked 18 of the most iconic/frightening horror openings of all time from least to most scary. The result is a completely objective list that will remain set in stone for all eternity. Are you ready? Can you handle it? Countdown starts now... 18. "Night of the Living Dead" (1968) "They're coming to get you, Barbara." While I have no doubt that contemporary audiences covered their eyes in fright during the opening sequence of Romero's original "Night of the Living Dead,...

1. When is it back?
Detectives Alec Hardy (David Tennant) and Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) will return to ITV in January 2015.
We don't know the exact date, but if we were taking a punt it would be in the second week of the year. And ITV would have to be daft not to put it on Monday nights again - it was the perfect start to the week.
2. Who is returning?
Despite Hardy's funny turns and dicky heart, David Tennant is definitely back. Despite finding out that her husband was a child murderer, Olivia Colman's slug-stomper Miller will also return.
Perhaps more surprisingly, Jodie Whittaker and Andrew Buchan are also involved in series 2. The duo played Beth and Mark Latimer, the parents of victim Danny in series one and their reappearance suggests that the second series may in some way be connected to the first - rather than a second,...

With WolfCop out now on disc, Ryan takes a look at how werewolf myths have faded in and out of cinema history...
It might seem strange, from our interconnected, know-it-all 21st century perspective, that people really did once believe that werewolves existed. Legends of wolf-men date back to antiquity, but really began to bite into society’s fear centres in Europe of the Middle Ages.
Take, for example, Peter Stumpp, a 16th century man whose strange story was related in a pamphlet published shortly after his death. A resident of a small town in Cologne, Stumpp claimed to have been given a belt of wolf skin by the Devil, which when worn, gave him the ability to transform into a wolf. In this form, Stumpp said he’d killed and eaten a dozen or so people over the course of 25 years - crimes described in grisly detail in that old pamphlet.

Halloween is nigh, and that means horror movies aplenty, not that we need any more of an excuse to dust off the classics of our favorite genre. But Beyond Fest, an event taking place in La throughout this October, is making that experience interactive, bringing together some of the finest filmmakers, the best movies, and even infusing screenings with live music from the likes of Umberto, Goblin, and Alan Howarth.
Perhaps the day I was most looking forward to was this past Saturday’s “Full Moon” double feature, serving up perhaps the two best werewolf movies of all-time, right after one another. Kicking off the evening is 1981′s The Howling, followed by the movie that it (and every werewolf movie) is indebted to: Universal’s The Wolf Man, with Lon Chaney Jr., Claude Rains, and Bela Lugosi. Chicago – When I was a teenager discovering horror films for the first time, I naturally gorged on ’80s genre classics and was drawn to the trendy characters like Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Leatherface. Films like Tobe Hooper’s “Lifeforce” and Joe Dante’s “The Howling” didn’t have what I was looking for. I wrote them off as dumb kids often do. Only over time have I come to fully appreciate both films, recently released in glorious HD restoration editions from the great Scream Factory. They’re must-owns for genre fans, as so many Sf titles have been lately.
Rating: 5.0/5.0
Hell, for a lot of horror fans, these are must-owns just for the gorgeous cover art. Looking beyond the beautiful illustrations, the films have been perfectly restored. “The Howling,” in particular, looks remarkable. I had never considered the film one of Dante’s strongest. I had considered wrong. It’s a smart,...

Rectify Daniel Holden (Aden Young) is released from prison after serving 19 years on death row for the rape and murder of a teenage girl, but his return home opens up a world of troubled complications for everyone involved. The small, Southern community is divided on the issue of his innocence as the DNA evidence seems at odds with his own confession, and those doubts are just some of the issues he now faces. Character actor Ray McKinnon moves behind the camera here as the show’s creator, and the result is easily one of the year’s finest and most affecting shows. Monster movies had seen their heyday come and go by the time Joe Dante made The Howling in 1981 and it seemed as if everyone had seen everything. However, Dante manages to create a unique entry in the werewolf movie canon with a murder mystery with supernatural creatures in it. The Howling still stands as one of the most inventive and fun horror films from the 1980′s and this stacked to the rafters Blu-ray from Scream Factory is a must have.

The Howling: “Severely shaken after a near-fatal encounter with a serial killer, TV newscaster Karen White (Dee Wallace, E.T.) takes some much-needed time off. Hoping to conquer her inner demons, she heads for “the Colony,” a secluded retreat where her new neighbors are just a tad too eager to make her feel at home. Also, there seems to be a bizarre link between her would-be attacker and this supposedly safe haven. And when, after nights of being tormented by savage shrieks and unearthly cries, Karen ventures into the forest to find answers, she makes a terrifying discovery. 1981 was the greatest year ever for fans of werewolf cinema. Bold statement? Possibly. Plain silly in light of Sybil Danning’s 1985 entry into the genre? Most assuredly. But if you were to make a list of the top five werewolf movies of all time it’s a near certainty that two of them were released in 1981. Late summer ’81 saw the August release of John Landis’ classic horror/comedy An American Werewolf in London, and just four months earlier Joe Dante‘s The Howling tore its way onto screens across America. While the two films are often spoken of in the same breath thanks to their chronological proximity and successful mix of laughs and terror, they’re also bonded through their unique but equally mesmerizing werewolf transformation scenes. A very young Rob Bottin handled the effects for Dante’s film, and they’ve never looked better than they do on Scream Factory‘s brand new Blu-ray of the...

I can always count on Scream Factory to present me with opportunities to revisit the cult classic horror films of the 1980s. The Howling gets an upgrade, marking the first time the movie has ever been available on Blu-ray. Many werewolf fans are wondering if the film feels aged in a high-definition format. I'm happy to report It's not without its faults, but holds up quite well.
After news anchor Karen White (Dee Wallace) is attacked by a mysterious stranger (Robert Picardo), she starts having bizarre dreams and night terrors about the incident. Karen's doctor (Patrick Macnee) convinces her that she and husband Bill (Christopher Stone) should go through his treatment at "The Colony." Strange things start to happen as soon as they arrive. Could Karen be cracking up or is there something sinister going on in the secluded resort?
Like most movies from the 1970s and the 1980s, The Howling is a slow-burner.

Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall has spoken of his excitement at the audience's reaction to the whodunnit series.

In an interview with TV Choice, Chibnall said that the cast had also been overwhelmed by the reaction to the series.
"Talking to David Tennant, he said, 'Well, I've not really experienced anything like this for a long time'," the writer explained.
"It is the thing of people ringing you up and going, 'Oh, I was in the doctor's waiting room and people were theorising about it'.
"What's exciting is it feels like people have taken ownership of the programme in a really positive way.

Howling II: … Your Sister Is a Werewolf
Written by Robert Sarno, Gary Brandner
Directed by Philippe Mora
USA, 1985
If you couldn’t tell from the ridiculous title, Howling II: … Your Sister is a Werewolf is quite a bizarre film. Blending together the myths of Lycans and vampires to craft a profoundly confusing feature.
Starting off with a brief Christopher Lee intro then picking up immediately after the events of the first Howling. For those who are unfamiliar with that film let’s just summarize it as a female reporter, Karen White, who discovers a community of werewolves, gets bitten and then transforms on live TV to expose the world to the werewolf threat. It seems that somehow this broadcast was cutoff and covered up so the film takes place in a world still ignorant of the lycan existence. At the funeral of said reporter we are introduced to her brother...

David Tennant and Olivia Colman's brilliant Broadchurch premiered on ITV last night (March 4) amid a flurry of hype and lofty comparisons with the Godfather of Nordic Noir, The Killing.
Thankfully, the opening episode more than matched the hype, managing to create a gripping whodunnit balanced alongside an emotionally powerful tale of parental grief. There are still eight episodes to go and a crime drama can be made or broken by its resolutions, but in my opinion this first hour was ITV's best piece of drama since 2011's Appropriate Adult. I'm utterly hooked.
Every week, I'll be collecting up the clues and examining the latest twists from the seaside town of Broadchurch to discover the culprit behind the murder of 11-year-old Danny Latimer. In last night's opening instalment, Danny was found on the beach and his death is now being investigated by Di Alec Hardy (Tennant) and DS Ellie Miller (Colman).

One of the many Scream Factory titles scheduled to be released this year is Joe Dante’s The Howling. The movie will be released as a bonus feature-packed Blu-ray/DVD collector’s edition, and we have the first look at the cover art.
A specific release date has not been announced, but Scream Factory expects The Howling to be available this summer. We should have release information, including a list of bonus features, next month.
For those that haven’t seen the werewolf classic, it was released in 1981 and stars Dee Wallace, Patrick Macnee, Christopher Stone, and Kevin McCarthy. The movie was directed by Joe Dante before he’d go on to make Gremlins.
“From the director of Gremlins and Piranha comes the ultimate masterpiece of primal terror. Filled with edge-of-your-seat suspense, “genuine thrills [and] amazing special effects” (Us), this riveting werewolf tale sinks its teeth into your deepest fears and never lets go!

Halloween evokes imagery of all of the great myths and monsters. Witches cackling on broomsticks, Vampires screeching as they turn into bats and the ominous groan of the ever-loved Frankenstein‘s Monster. But is there anything so chilling as the stop-you-in-your-tracks anguished howl of a werewolf? A man reduced to his most base instincts. An unwilling killer. A victim.
Ever since I was a kid I have wanted to be a werewolf. They have always been my favourite monster and any Psychotherapist worth their degree would probably track it all back to the issues of growing up as an outcast, puny Geek. And they would most likely be right.
I don’t care. Issues or no issues, having the sheer raw ferocity to rend limb from limb always seemed quite romantic to me. Clearly I have missed the subtext of the human cursed, a murderer but not by choice. Maybe I do have issues.

Based on the best-selling novel by Gary Brandner, The Howling made effective use of the classic werewolf tale but more importantly the film deserves respect simply for being the innovative modern werewolf flick, that is the first to actually show the lycanthrope transformation process in slow, painstaking detail through a combination of clever edits and animatronics. The Howling may not be as polished or effective as John Landis’ 1981 An American Werewolf in London, but the film delivers more action, gore and true scares letting the wolves bite in and howl more often than not. Werewolves are the least-regarded of all the classic monsters. Unlike vampire films and Mummy films werewolves have never had much luck at the box office. 1981 changed all that with not one but two movies baring these hairy beasts. The combination of American Werewolf In London and The Howling (both released in 1981) further backs up the theory...

Now film distributor Anchor Bay have announced they’ve acquired the rights to release the film in all English-speaking countries. The Howling: Reborn is currently in post-production.

The Howling franchise has been around for what seems like forever. Yes, the sequels have been known to fly completely off of the rails sometimes, but hey, they're as tenacious as The Children of the Corn flicks! We're hoping this latest flick gets things back on track. We'll find out soon enough too as The Howling: Reborn has just scored itself some distro!

Any film directed by Joe Dante is a film for the fans and 'The Howling' is no exception. The director's 1981 horror flick about a news reporter trying to regain her memory at a mysterious resort after a near-fatal encounter with a serial killer is chock-full of classic horror references. Everything from the character's names (Dr. George Waggner - named after the director of 'The Wolf Man,' and so forth), as well as little in-joke references and cameos from genre gods like Roger Corman and Forrest J. If Frankenstein's monster represents man creating life without a woman and Dracula represents sleeping with a stranger, then the werewolf is no doubt the bestiality within man. We all have some form of a dark nature encoded in our genetic make-up, the beast within if you will. Even though Vampires seem to be all the rave nowadays, I was always a greater fan of the werewolf and find them sexier than those pale, angst ridden parasites. I can't really explain it and I'm sure my attraction to aggressive members of the opposite sex has something to do with it, but that's another story. In celebration of the epic Benicio Del Toro vehicle The Wolfman, which resurrects one of Universal Pictures' classic movie monsters, I took a look at a dozen of the sexiest werewolves in movies and TV. This is not a list about the best werewolf movies ever made,...

It appears as if our prayers have been answered friends, and werewolves will be following vampires in the great 'classic monsters rebirth' cycle of this century. Universal is hitting hard with The Wolf Man early next year, and there are remakes of An American Werewolf in London and An American Werewolf in Paris are being whispered about in the halls of Hollywood. The only potential downside to all of this is if the Twilight effect kicks in, and future werewolf movies are stripped of their grit and given a glossy, teen-targeted look. Insert the potentially problematic premise of The Howling: Reborn, announced today via Variety. Indie producers Joel Kastelberg and Etchie Stroh are setting up a remake of the 1981 Joe Dante film, which followed a news anchor being stalked by a killer who turns out to be a werewolf. This new film will follow more of a Gossip Girl meets Twilight, with...

Apparently the Powers That Be (aka the guys who own the rights to the franchise) have decided to reboot “The Howling”, a series of werewolf movies from the ’80s that, like all ’80s horror movie franchises, spawned a series of wholly unnecessary (and, presumably, increasingly shitty) sequels. I wasn’t a big fan of the franchise, so the news doesn’t really get me all riled up as reboot news usually do. But Arrow in the Head thinks they know what the reboot will be all about. Hint: It’s “Twilight”, but with werewolves. And we’re not talking about those giant wolves in the “Twilight” movies. I mean, what the frak are those about? The Reborn screenplay opens in a similar manner to the 1981 Dante film, with a young reporter – named Karen White – meeting up with a serial killer who is stalking her. In this version, however, there are...
