Lyn and a guest have been summoned to Staufen House by the estimable Dr. Justus Frost. I’m not sure if that sounds more ominous or pretentious, but either way Lyn and her guest, boyfriend Elijah are on their way to the doctor’s retreat.
Joining them for the weekend are Tara, a famous and full of herself media personality, and Joe an entrepreneur specializing in self-help programs. They have a messy divorce in common, his fourth no less.
Writer Yuri Baranovsky and director Mark Meir lay on the tropes right from The Summoned’s opening scenes. A cryptic prologue, a creepy encounter on the drive to the retreat, undercurrents of trouble between Lyn and Elijah, etc. And, as you might expect, he also turns out to be the only...

"We are baptized in shame, and in shame we live." And shame we must break free from! XYZ Films has revealed an official trailer for The Summoned, an indie horror thriller that's landing on VOD in July. This recently premiered at the 2022 Overlook Film Festival this month, a good horror festival to show a film like this. It's described as a "Faustian morality tale" from a script by Jewish-Ukrainian writer Yuri Baranovsky. Elijah attends a self-help retreat with his rockstar girlfriend Lyn, unaware that the enigmatic doctor, Dr. Frost played by Frederick Stuart, who runs the estate has summoned him here to settle a generations-old supernatural debt. The film stars J. Quinton Johnson as Elijah, with Emma Fitzpatrick, Salvador Chacon, Angela Gulner, and Freddy Douglas. This looks like it has some good thrills and chills, better than your average indie horror. That between-the-legs axe shot is the best shot from the trailer.

Starve, binge, purge, repeat. This is the endless cycle of life for anyone suffering from bulimia. Since they always say ‘write what you know’, that’s exactly what actress-turned-creator Angela Gulner has done – twice. First, Angela launched the pilot episode of the dark comedy web series, Binge, late last year. The project gained much critical acclaim and public attention for its non-glamorous yet comedic approach to this very real topic. As a follow-up, Angela recently unveiled the prequel short film, The Blind Girl, providing a love-versus-bulimia backstory to her edgy eating disorder tale. To help her get both from script to screen, Angela turned to producing partner and director Yuri Baranovsky. They also brought in actor Drake Bell, the star of Nickelodeon’s Josh & Drake...

It’s a great pitch: A comedy about bulimia. It sells itself. So well, in fact, that more than one person had the idea. “When I saw ‘The Skinny,’ I had a meltdown,” Angela Gulner, creator and star of “Binge,” told IndieWire. “I was like: ‘My story has been told. There’s no room for it anymore.’ But then I calmed down a little bit.”

She realized that there was room for more than one eating disorder comedy. The success of Jessie Kahnweiler’s “The Skinny” (the web series premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was co-produced by Jill Soloway) did not mean the failure of “Binge.” Quite the opposite — it meant there was an audience for her story.
Not only that, but such a universal and pressing issue deserves more than one story.

When Machinima announced the re-launch of its Machinima Prime channel, execs promised a return to the network's roots. Sure enough, the first original series from the new Prime is a classic combination of video games and comedy. It's called Dr. 1Up, and it stars Noel Carroll as the titular doctor, who provides medical advice to video game characters. Each episode features a diagnosis of a famous video game character. In the debut, Solid Snake arrives at Dr. 1Up's clinic and learns that 30 years of nonstop cigarette consumption has caused him to contract aggressive lung cancer. He doesn't seem to mind, because he's too busy hiding in boxes and launching into 30-minute long soliloquies. Meanwhile, the doctor's receptionist (played by Bree Essrig) hatches a plan to get the stars of The Last of Us to stop annoying her. Dr. 1Up was written by Woody Tondorf (who is co-leading Machinima Prime's return...

Budweiser’s premiere commercial spot for Super Bowl Xlviii has already racked up 34 million views (and counting, quickly) since it went live on YouTube on January 29, 2014, four full days before the ad was set to air on television broadcasts nationwide. The advertisement and its viewership numbers reveal a few important things. One, Budweiser is very good at advertising. Two, everyone loves puppies and Clydesdales, and everyone especially loves puppies and Clydesdales together. And three, you’ve most likely already seen a lot of the big-budget Super Bowl ads hours or even days before the game was set to take place. The videos on YouTube’s Super Bowl commercial destination, for instance, have so far been viewed a collective 77+ million times. But what you may not have seen already are some of the fake Super Bowl ads entities that aren’t major commercial brands. YouTube, for instance, enlisted a handful of...

Yuri Baranovsky knows what it takes to make a successful web series. The writer/producer/self-described "web celebrity" has had a hand in creating winning shows such as Leap Year, Break A Leg, and LoveMakers. Baranovsky has long used his blog as a way to pass on the secrets of online video success. However, a new textbook is taking things to the next level by providing an official outlet for his thoughts. Baranovsky is one of the authors of Scriptwriting 2.0: Writing For The Digital Age, a scholastic publication now available for purchase. The textbook purports to be the first academic text aimed at new media screenwriting, and is already drawing positive reviews from various new media professors. "The important aspect of this book is...the blend of traditional story structure skills with heart, soul, conflict, and imagination residing in the discipline required to make the transformation from notions in...

It’s important for proprietors of small business to have small business insurance. Especially if that small business is a startup in possession of $500,000 in seed capital, the technological knowhow to make the kinds of holographic images that brought Tupac back to life as commonplace in internet savvy households as webcams, and a handful of cutthroat entrepreneurial enemies that thrive in the seedy underbelly of Silicon Valley. At least that’s the sentiment - and the premise - of the sophomore season of the the original branded entertainment web series Leap Year. Yuri Baranovsky recently asked a silly question on Facebook. The creator of one of the original original web series Break a Leg and principal at Happy Little Guillotine Productions wondered to his friends “Would you be more inclined to watch a high-quality, extremely well-shot, -scripted, and -acted web series if it was longer (22 mins)? Or shorter (7 mins)?” The answer’s obvious. No one watches Modern Family, Breaking Bad, or There Will Be Blood and says, “I wish there was less of that!” If the entertainment property is high-quality and engaging, we want to see more minutes of it, regardless of the medium. The people at Funny or Die agree with me. The new media studio and online comedy destination’s CEO Dick Glover recently told Jessica Vascellaro at the Wall Street Journal he’s on the lookout for longer, feature-length comedies “that could live online.” Glover isn’t searching for big budget homeruns,...

$1 million isn’t what it used to be, but in the web series culture of “favors and waivers,” it’s a small fortune. Even Joss Whedon’s widely popular Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, with its cast of Hollywood notables, came in with budget just under $300k. To scrappy indie web series creators, Madison Avenue’s ad agencies and their branded entertainment series don’t even seem to be playing in the same league. But some of the lucky creators have embraced this new flood of ad dollars in online video, and found there’s a living to be made crafting these sponsor driven, heavily product integrated made-for-web originals. Yuri Baranovsky, creator of the 2007 hit indie comedy Break A Leg, he and his team at Happy Little Guillotine Films were one of those lucky crossovers. Break a Leg is a web series about creating a television show called Groomates, which is a sitcom about three ex-grooms living with their two ex-wives. Wordplay! Brothers Yuri and Vlad Baranovsky released Break a Leg online in late 2007, and it's bizarro Hollywood stylings, murder mystery hook, Arrested Development sensibility, and excellent use of a laugh machine quickly made it one of the web's first breakout hits. Unfortunately, the Arrested Development comparision goes beyond the show's sense of humor. Despite widespread critical acclaim, Break a Leg was never able to garner big money sponsorships and its YouTube viewcounts equated to little cash. At least that's what happened when the show aired in the Us. Perhaps it'll garner good reviews and fame and fortune in Italy. Happy Little Guillotine Films, the production company behind Break a Leg, recently announced a deal with Fox Channels Italy that will bring the web series overseas.

Not since the Streamy Awards have we seen this many web series stars in one place. Ok not really, but with the fourth season of The Temp Life, the Spherion-backed comedy about life inside a dreadful NY temp agency kicking off today, the cast is loaded up with notable web series stars. The casting moves are signs this four-year old web show is growing up with the medium in which it plays. Call it Web TV's version of keiretsu. Creator Wilson Cleveland, Cjp Communications' Head of Digital Media, built the show back in 2006 for the firm's client Spherion. Incidentally, Cleveland also stars in the The Temp Life, as Nick “Trouble” Chiapetta, the once-ceo of Commodity Staffing, the shoddy agency. This new season picks up with some major changes once Chiapetta returns to office after a 33-week Awol. Notable guest (web) stars: Thom Woodley — co-creator and star of All's Faire, The 'Burg and Vuguru's The All-for-Nots.

The Temp Life has kind of flown under the radar in terms of branded web series successes, but ever since it first convinced a blue-chip sponsor to back the web comedy back in mid 2006, it has trekked on steadily delivering for both audience and sponsor. At first glance it portends to be another blah-blah office comedy, but the concept is actually pretty novel, given the show's sponsor, real-life recruiting and staffing company Spherion. Take a comical look at small off-brand temp agencies, well known to job-hopping New Yorkers, and show what could happen if you don't end up with one of the big boys like Spherion. The fictional agency, Commodity Staffing, carves out its niche as the dredges of temp jobs—think changing crusty urinal cakes and 24/7 lifecasting of a stuck-up socialite. Streamy-nominated writer Yuri Baranovsky (Break a Leg) has been hired to write the new episodes and The Hayley Project...
