I Love Lucy ran on CBS for six seasons from 1951-1957. The series, which centered around Lucy and Ricky Ricardo and their friends Fred and Ethel Mertz, was a sensation in its time and still lives in syndication seven decades later.
I Love Lucy is considered one of the funniest shows of all time. Lucy and Ricky Ricardo were played by real-life husband and wife, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. Much of the comedy stemmed from their real-life issues and Lucy’s ability to always get herself into trouble.
The Ricardos did not go it alone. Their landlords, neighbors, and friends were couple Fred and Ethel Mertz. Ethel was alongside Lucy for most of her shenanigans, but there was a lot more to the Mertzs than just being sidekicks to the Ricardos.
Who played Ethel Mertz on ‘I Love Lucy’?
Lucy’s bestie, Ethel Mertz, was played by Vivian Vance.

Television shows often contain plot holes that eagle-eyed fans catch, and The Rookie is certainly not immune to these mistakes. Most of the time, episodes have minor errors that can be easily forgotten. But every now and then, writers overlook major elements that completely contradict their storytelling. And unfortunately, one of Lucy Chen’s central storylines in The Rookie Season 5 contains a significant plot hole.

After Lucy was promoted to Police Officer II in The Rookie Season 3, she became interested in undercover work. Nyla Harper, who previously was an undercover police officer, took Lucy under her wing and helped her with her first operation. Lucy proved to be a natural at it, much to Tim Bradford’s dismay.
Lucy went undercover again in the season 3 finale to help take down La Fiera.

Even before he started kicking the ball downfield as Jamie Tartt in the Emmy-winning "Ted Lasso," Phil Dunster was kicking around the film and television industry as a working actor. Dunster is one of those faces that you might have already seen in a minor role somewhere and forgotten before he gained more visibility in "Ted Lasso." Who remembers his 2017 appearance, for instance, in Kenneth Branagh's star-studded film adaptation of "Murder on the Orient Express," where he played the father of a girl named Daisy?
With "Ted Lasso" now midway through its third season on Apple TV+, and Nicolas Cage currently chewing scenery and veins in theaters in Universal's wacko Dracula movie "Renfield," the unlikely Venn diagram of vampire movie fans, Phil Dunster stans, and supporters of the fictional soccer football team AFC Richmond has perhaps never had more overlap. That's presuming that "Renfield" and "Ted Lasso" are...

Ben Affleck may call Matt Damon his best friend, but he admits he would not recommend living with him.
During an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden on Thursday, Affleck reflected on what it was like in the early days of living with Damon and his brother Casey Affleck.
“Matt’s never paid a bill to this day, that I know of,” Affleck joked. “We’re like, ‘Why are the lights not working?’, and that’s because the utility company needs money to continue to fund our electricity.”
When Corden asked whether Damon was a good roommate, Affleck didn’t shy from explaining why he wasn’t.
“Matt’s a beautiful guy. I love him. He’s my best friend. He’s been great to me my whole life. He’s a brilliant guy. I would not suggest living with him,” Affleck said. He explained that it...

Hmmm, now this is a strange bit of film release synergy. Now the big studio-wide release this weekend is Renfield which can be called a horror/comedy hybrid (though it’s also an action thriller satire). The other small studio flick also blends comedy with another very popular genre, crime. To be more specific it’s a crime-family comedy, hence the use of that “reviled” (to some) word. Oh, and there’s a “gender-switch” as a woman takes the seat at the head of the table for the “sit-down”. Hey, if there can be a godfather, then why not a Mafia Mamma?
The story kicks into high gear “across the pond” in the “old country”, Italy, soon after a gun battle that produces lots of casualties for both warring factions. This prompts a long-distance phone call from the Balbano family “advisor” Bianca (Monica Bellucci) to a relative in the States,...

Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus are taking their supergroup boygenius on the road in celebration of their great debut album, the record. They started things off with a warm-up show Wednesday at the Fox Theater in Pomona, California, in a set that included the live debut of many of the album’s songs.
The trio began the show with a shortened version of “Without You Without Them” before going straight into the record highlight “$20” — and they just might be braver than the marines for pulling off that guttural scream so early in the night.
From there, boygenius played every song on the new album, including instant fan-favorites like “Emily I’m Sorry,” “True Blue,” and “Not Strong Enough.” Fans of the band’s still-great 2018 EP will be happy to know that the main part of their set also included “Me & My Dog,” “Souvenir,” and “Salt in the Wound,...

Keith Thibodeaux, then billed as Richard Keith, landed the role of Little Ricky in I Love Lucy at the ripe old age of five. A drumming prodigy, Thibodeaux beat out 200 or more child actors to become the fictional son of Lucy and Ricky Ricardo. He went on to appear in over 20 episodes of the iconic series and several of its spinoffs. Believe it or not, it wasn’t his first brush with fame. Thibodeaux was already a veteran employee when I Love Lucy came around. In fact, he was making $500 per week by the age of three.

As Netflix continues to lean into the realm of adult animated comedies, the streaming platform is proud to announce the voice cast for Mulligan, an upcoming series from the team behind Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. The order for 20 episodes of Mulligan gained approval from Netflix in March 2020, shortly after the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. The concept is from co-creators Robert Carlock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt writer and executive producer Sam Means.
Per Netflix’s official logline, “After Earth is destroyed by an alien attack, a rag-tag band of survivors has to start society over from scratch. We, just like most fans of ABC‘s The Rookie, waited for what felt like forever for Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen to become a couple. And when they finally did, we were ecstatic. “Infidelity Can Be Fatal” is not as over-the-top thrilling as it sounds. It is very predictable, but it manages to hold onto our attention and makes us wait to find out how things turn out compared to our expectations. It has a tight plot, and it’s a good watch too. While some things are absurd, we accept them and move on with the storytelling, knowing that it’s just a film.

This week HeyUGuys sat down with acclaimed film director Kelly Reichardt at the BFI Southbank to discuss her latest film Certain Woman. Regarded by many critics as one of the seminal figures of the minimalist movement, Reichardt discusses the other films she has adapted such as Wendy and Lucy and OldJoy. She also talks about if she would ever consider transitioning to the medium of TV and how films can be interpreted and crafted in unpredictable ways.
Your films, I think, are often beautiful observations of characters and their stories. You have a unique way of making the audience wonder what a person is thinking or feeling deep underneath the surface, even when it is a character we glimpse briefly. That being said, Certain Women is adapted from Maile Meloy’s Both Ways is the Only Way I Want It, which is a collection of 11 stories in total.

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

Looks like most of those rumors turned out to be true. The director of modern minimalist classics like “Wendy & Lucy,” “Old Joy,” “Meek’s Cutoff,” and “Night Moves” — that latter film we just placed on our 50 Best Films Of The Decade So Far list — a new Kelly Reichardt film is always cause for celebration. And so we greatly anticipate her upcoming project, an untitled, vignette-driven drama set in small town Montana. And the already-terrific cast just got even better. Kristen Stewart, coming off two great performances in “Clouds of Sils Maria” and “Camp X-Ray,” has joined the film. According to Deadline, she will portray a lawyer from Boise, Idaho who takes a teaching job several hours from her house. Stewart’s character develops a friendship with a local woman who’s auditing her class. Michelle Williams “stars” (or just might be the biggest name in the cast), and the cast also includes Laura Dern,...

Part of our continuing partnership with the online film journal, cléo. Every month, cléo will be presenting a great film to watch on our video on demand platform. In conjunction, we'll be hosting an exclusive article by one of their contributors. This month the journal's managing editor, Julia Cooper, writes on Kelly Reichardt's Old Joy, which is available to watch starting July 31 in the Us and Canada.

Deliberate and the measured, the oeuvre of Kelly Reichardt—which has included films "Old Joy," "Wendy & Lucy" and "Meek's Crossing"—isn't for everyone. That said, she's been able to attract some pretty terrific talent for her films, with Michelle Williams making two movies with the director. Her next project, "Night Moves," she rounds up Jesse Eisenberg, Dakota Fanning and Peter Sarsgaard for a tale with a more provocative punch. One of the 21 Best Films Of 2014 We've Already Seen, the film follows three people who come together to bomb a hydroelectric dam, and follows them as they plan their subversive action. The result is a movie that we called in our review "a crackling little suspense thriller/morality play indebted to Dostoyevsky and Hitchcock." For Sarsgaard, working on the movie allowed him to take a closer look at the world defines and deals with terrorism. "I actually really dislike the term 'eco-terrorism,...

With a trio of measured dramas under her belt — “Old Joy,” “Wendy & Lucy” and “Meek’s Cutoff” — Kelly Reichardt has established herself as a filmmaker whose storytelling style is patient and considered. But when news arrived that her latest "Night Moves" would take on eco-terrorism and feature a Hollywood-ish cast with Jesse Eisenberg, Dakota Fanning and Petes Sarsgaard, it certainly grabbed our attention. The result? As our review out of Venice notes, a "perfect reminder that Reichardt is one of the most exciting directorial talents we have right now." And with the film now on its way to Toronto, the first clip from "Night Moves" has arrived and unsurprisingly, it's quiet and contemplative. The story itself follows three people who come together to bomb a hydroelectric dam, with the film less focused on those mechanics, than in investigating the the principles and ethics of those who participate in this kind of extreme action.

After the acclaimed trio of “Old Joy,” “Wendy & Lucy” and “Meek’s Cutoff,” Kelly Reichardt was already proving hard to pin down. The three films that made her name (plus her lesser-known earlier works “ Ode” and “River Of Grass”) are immediately recognizable as the work of the director, but very different from each other thematically, if perhaps not formally. Whatever her next move was going to be, it was going to be interesting, but few would have predicted that it would be “Night Moves”—a crackling little suspense thriller/morality play indebted to Dostoyevsky and Hitchcock. But while it’s a left turn, it’s at least as good as the films that came before it, and still with the same recognizable DNA intact. The film picks up, without much in the way of scene-setting, with a trio of individuals: Josh (Jesse Eisenberg), who lives on a self-sustaining eco-friendly commune,...

Meek’s Cutoff
Directed by Kelly Reichardt
Kelly Reichardt had a stellar if hushed 2000s, and then she commenced the current decade with a film that is already beginning to feel like an unsung modern classic. Meek’s Cutoff is one of those exhilarating instances in which a marriage of disparate styles produces something tricky to imagine, but perfect to behold: a period piece set in mid-1800’s Oregon, shot in academy ratio and classically beautiful for it, but with Reichardt’s signature severe naturalism. The result is so stark and understated that it begins to feel graceful, weirdly epic. A small caravan of settlers (featuring Michelle Williams and a once again devout Paul Dano) hires a guide, big-talking Stephen Meek, to help them navigate the Oregon Trail. As the terrain grows less forgiving and water evermore scarce, the settlers begin to wonder if the route Meek...

Director Kelly Reichardt has made three of the best indies in recent years-- Old Joy, Wendy & Lucy and Meek's Cutoff-- but there are still plenty of people who've never seen her work. That may start to change as she not only works with bigger and more famous casts, but starts tackling the kind of hot-button issues that start getting peoples's attention. So don't be surprised if you hear a lot of chatter around Reichardt's name next year, as she prepares to go to work on a thriller about eco-terrorists who plan to blow up a dam-- and especially now that she's cast two fairly famous young actors to do all that plotting. According to Variety, The Social Network star Jesse Eisenberg and now-grown child actress Dakota Fanning are in talks to star in Reichardt's upcoming Night Moves, which also has Peter Sarsgaard on board. Reichardt also wrote the script...

Robert here w/ Distant Relatives, exploring the connections between one classic and one contemporary film. This week the first in a three part series on how one classic film can have many children.
After a year that celebrated films about redemption and sentimentality, it's difficult to look at movies about poverty and struggle and not feel like a downer. But there's a reason why a film like The Bicycle Thief, or its neo-realist brethren is considered among the best of all time. Similarly, there's a reason why enough young filmmakers today are inspired to take on that same topic of hardship to make up a small movement that's frequently labeled "neo-neo-realism" (if you're into things being labeled), including Wendy and Lucy. And it has nothing to do with presenting a vision of a world devoid of hope or happiness.
The old joke phrase, "I'm not a pessimist, I'm a realist" doesn't apply here.

Michelle Williams is so good as the title character in Simon Curtis‘ My Week with Marilyn that watching the film is like watching Some Like it Hot for the first time — or whichever film it was that made you fall in love with Marilyn Monroe at first sight. It’s like falling in love with the icon all over again, and at the end, you have to remind yourself that you were watching somebody else. It would be superb if this film — an absolute crowd-pleaser — makes a commercial splash, because Williams, so often appearing brilliantly in little-seen projects (Wendy and Lucy, Blue Valentine, Meek’s Cutoff), deserves a much bigger audience.
Based on a pair of Colin Clark memoirs, each piece of writing contributes to the film’s storyline. Clark is played in the film by Eddie Redmayne as a boyish, wide-eyed 23-year-old who dreams of working in the entertainment industry.

Draws Parallels Between His Character And The Documentary 'If A Tree Falls' It's no secret that Kelly Reichardt is one of our favorite filmmakers, a unique voice in cinema whose films to date, such as "Old Joy," "Wendy & Lucy" and "Meek's Cutoff," have arrived in deceptively low key packages, and upon viewing, open up a rich interior world. Word has been quiet since the director dropped her 'Cutoff' but it appears that after delivering that hard scrabble western, she is looking to make a distinct swing into a new direction. Writer Jon Raymond has a pretty impeccable resume thus far, having written Kelly Reichardt three films, Old Joy, Wendy & Lucy and Meek’s Cutoff. Todd Haynes has an equally impressive resume, best known for his feature films Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story, Poison, Safe, and the Academy Award-nominated Far from Heaven and I’m Not There. Well what if these two talents came together to write and direct a feature film? Wouldn’t it be something incredible?
In an interview with Time Out London, Haynes announced that he would be working with Raymond on his next project, a feature about contemporary conservative politics in America. Haynes didn’t reveal any other details, and in fact went on to say that he was still trying to sort out the details.
This would mark the third time the duo works together since Haynes produced Cutoff and Raymond co-wrote the first three parts of Mildred Pierce.

A hero of the indie circuit with a legitimate knack for homing in on the current American spirit, filmmaker Kelly Reichardt has become recognized by many as tragically overlooked by many, many others. Well look over no longer, Toronto, as this week the Tiff Bell Lightbox begins a retrospective on the filmmaker, screening her catalog of films from the past two decades, including Wendy and Lucy, Rivers of Grass and her latest, Meek’s Cutoff. I had the pleasure of watching a selection of some of the films to be played and can give you an idea of why the Lightbox is deeming her qualified for the title of New Auteur.
Meek’s Cutoff, 2010
Her first period piece and easily most ambitious feature to date, Meek’s Cutoff is a film that wraps its style of narrative not only around a core themes of hope, trust and ambiguity, but the hindrance of limited perspective.

The Old Joy and Wendy And Lucy director spins great stories on micro budgets, but still has no plans to give up her day job
She has made some of the most haunting and enigmatic movies in recent American cinema, but chances are you won't recognise Kelly Reichardt's name. Although she's been directing since the early 1990s, she still has to rely on her job teaching at New York's Bard College for a steady income. Indeed, cash is so tight that the 46-year-old, Florida-born film-maker couldn't even afford an extra day's shooting to finish off the original ending for her latest.
This is Meek's Cutoff, a brooding western of sorts which trails three families inching across the Oregon desert by foot and wagon in 1845. Their guide is the maddening Stephen Meek (Bruce Greenwood), whose flawed navigational skills have left them plodding from one parched and featureless plateau to another as supplies and energies dwindle.

Today's indie trailer we're featuring via Apple is for a drama called Meek's Cutoff set on the Oregon trail in the 1800's directed by Old Joy and Wendy & Lucy director Kelly Reichardt. The film, which stars Michelle Williams, Bruce Greenwood and Paul Dano, is being released this spring by Oscilloscope. This received great reviews from various festivals (see criticWIRE). However, I've heard from numerous other folks who've seen it that it's incredibly slow and boring. If you enjoy these slow-burn period flicks, then it may be exactly what you're looking for, otherwise if that stuff isn't your cup o' tea (like me), then I suggest keeping away from it. Don't get too excited, but Meek's Cutoff is a Western starring a nigh-on unrecognisable Michelle Williams, alongside Shirley Henderson, Zoe Kazan, Paul Dano and Will Patton, directed by indie stalwart Kelly Reichardt (of Old Joy and Wendy & Lucy fame). These are the facts as we know them. Here are some more facts (as we know them): The plot revolves around a group of wagons in 1845 who decide to take a shortcut on their way to Willamette Valley. The name of the shortcut? You guessed it, Meek's Cutoff. You're probably thinking there are some troubles along that shortcut, right? You guessed it again, right on the button. As you can tell from the tone of the trailer below, it's not a rootin'-tootin' shoot-the-hats-off-your-head western, and more of a sombre, thinky indie drama, beautifully shot and wonderfully realised. Okay, it's not The Dark Knight Rises here, but it's all good stuff.

Here he plays Lenny, a divorced father of two young boys who has little grasp on parental responsibility and skill, and even less good judgment. When we first meet Lenny, he pompously mouths off to the school principal in a juvenile defense of his two boys. That scene sets our teeth on edge for what's to come. Lenny takes his sons on vacation with a woman he first met at a bar the night before. He brings the kids to his job as a projectionist, then lets them run wild and even operate the projector—badly. Marley & Me leads a strong list of contenders for the film awards
Put your paws together for the third annual Fido awards, the Oscars for canine actors, which will be presented at the BFI Southbank in London on Sunday. This year has been particularly strong for performances by four-legged film stars. It would be a huge oversight if the golden labrador (actually, all eight of them), who really got under the fur of naughty dog Marley in Marley & Me didn't run off with a prize in the romcom rover category. The nomination list for comedy canine is particularly strong – the dogs in Beverley Hills Chihuahua and the CGI film Bolt are both serious contenders, and the ensemble in Hotel for Dogs showed canine chemistry at its best.
"It has been an incredible year, and it has been great to see dogs in central roles," says Toby Rose, the founder of the Fido awards.

- Does one call it a trend if two remarkably talented indie filmmakers are looking to explore (and make their next project) the Western. Ramin Bahrani (Chop Shop, Goodbye Solo) is saddling up for a 2010 shoot for his Untitled Western, and now comes word that the Western might receive the revisionist, minimalist and low budget treatment via Kelly Reichardt. The filmmaker who overwhelmed us with her co-directed debut Old Joy, and received tons of accolades for the Michelle Williams-starring Wendy & Lucy (I'm among the small percentage of those who didn't cling to the 2008 semi-road trip drama), will according to producer, mentor and friend Larry Fessenden, is currently fleshing out some of her characters for her screenplay. If we do find out more info Reichardt's Untitled Western it'll probably be when her producers look for some coin in 2010 - regardless, we look forward in keeping her fans in the loop.

The Feature:
Wendy and Lucy, amongst other things, is a film of great compassion. It’s very nature is quiet, calming, observational and small - but it’s overwhelming strength is the ability that Michelle Williams’ performance has to dig deep into the core understanding of our own experiences and knowledge of the current social and economic conditions in the world, enabling us to emphasize with and have compassion for, her struggles.
We first meet Wendy when her barely running Honda car breaks down on a stopover in Oregon. She is on her way to Alaska to find work and appears to have all of her earthly possessions in the boot of her car. Things become more complicated for Wendy when her only friend and companion, a dog named Lucy, is lost.
