10. ‘Grotesque’ (2009) L-r: Hiroaki Kawatsure as Kazuo Kojima and Shigeo Ôsako as The Doctor | Media Blasters
A mysterious man identified only as “the doctor” kidnaps a young couple (Hiroaki Kawatsure and Kotoha Hiroyama) and begins to perform extreme torture on them. He puts them through a game for survival designed to slowly destroy their hopes of making it out with their lives.
Kôji Shiraishi’s Grotesque falls into the “torture porn” sub-genre that James Wan’s Saw and Eli Roth’s Hostel popularized in the 2000s. However, this Japanese exploitation horror flick pushes all boundaries, introducing...

Generally regarded as one of the more controversial exploitation pictures of all time, 2010’s A Serbian Film has been the subject of multiple bans and debates over its extensive violence and sexual material. Although it may not quite live up to the hype, it’s definitely a unique watch and is now getting an uncut 4K HD, feature-packed Blu-ray and DVD release this January from Unearthed Films.
For those not aware, the movie is the work of Srđan Spasojević, and deals with a semi-retired porn star who agrees to take part in an independent production that quickly spirals out of control. It’s sufficient to say that the filmmakers don’t hold back in packing the title with numerous unpleasant acts, many of which are difficult to read about, let alone actually see on screen.

The Daniels (Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert) a music video directing duo, who unleashed the internet breaking visuals for DJ Snake’s Turn Down For What back in 2014, make their feature debut with this bromantic comedy between a marooned millennial and a farting corpse, hardly the easiest sell to a movie going safe-spacer. And it’s true, when Swiss Army Man, the hottest ticket at last year’s Sundance Film Festival unspooled before the sold-out audiences’ eyes, many just got up and left, totally disgusted. Okay, let’s be clear here, this isn’t Robert Zemeckis’s Castaway that’s for sure, but it ain’t Srdjan Spasojevic’s A Serbian Film either. Beneath their scatological obsessed humour, the Daniels have crafted a bizarre little indy film about isolation and sexual shame, which at times is beautifully lo-fi and tender.

Late last month, I posted the trailer for Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala's upcoming horror film "Goodnight Mommy" and called it "the scariest trailer I've seen in a long time." I wasn't kidding! After my post went up, multiple other outlets proceeded to call it the scariest trailer of All time, which I found a tad hyperbolic. Nevertheless! The Austrian scare flick may have just received a competitor for scariest trailer of 2015 from a twisted little Turkish film entitled "Baskin," which is set to premiere in the Midnight Madness section at this year's Toronto International Film Festival. The plot? "A squad of unsuspecting cops goes through a trapdoor to Hell when they stumble upon a Black Mass in an abandoned building." Which sounds like the storyline to a cheesy, borderline incoherent Lucio Fulci movie! Except "Baskin" appears to be less "The Beyond" and more "Hellraiser" (only even more perverse...

There were a lot of great ideas presented at this year's Pitch Sessions during the opening day of the Frontières International Co-Production Market. It was a full morning of nineteen presentations from filmmakers both local and international. Unfortunately for Serbian filmmaker Srdjan Spasojevic (A Serbian Film) he had visa issues and could not complete his trip to Montreal to present his project Whereout. Every filmmaker or producer had eight minutes to present their project and hook the many industry professionals in the room that morning. Some of the aspirations are lofty and some are meager. One of the projects, El Gigante, already made progress the following day, as we reported before the weekend. These are some of the projects that caught my attention that morning. ...

Recap of 'Without Your Head Horror Radio' Interview with 'A Serbian Film' director Srdjan Spasojevic
by Vic Schiavone
Without Your Head Horror Radio hosts Nasty Neal and Annabelle Lecter welcomed Serbian filmmaker Srdjan Spasojevic to Wyh Horror Radio for a rare hour-long interview on March 13, 2014 . Srdjan is best known as the director of the controversial movie A Serbian Film (review).
Highlights included the following:
• Nn: In the early stages of “A Serbian Film”, was it always the intent that the movie would be a metaphor for life and art in Serbia, or did you just want to make a movie?
SS: “For me, it’s let’s make a movie. I was never much of an analyst or a critic or reviewer guy. I’m trying to make a film, and to say or just to incorporate my feelings inside it. So it’s on other people, people who are analysts or movie critics, to talk about that. For me, the beginning was let’s make a movie.

Popular in the 1960s and early 1970s with more rare appearances in the 1980s, 1990s and the 2000s, the anthology-style horror film has made a solid resurgence in recent years with such portmanteau releases as The ABCs of Death films and the V/H/S series.
With Mexico Barbaro, Fear Paris and other projects in various stages of completion, the anthology horror film looks to continue to be an important part of the horror cinema landscape.
Some anthology films employ a framing or wraparound sequence in an attempt to connect the segments that make up the film while others dispense with this classic Amicus-style approach entirely and simply present a collection of short films connected by genre.
Either way, a horror anthology film is ultimately about the quality of its individual segments and this article will take you on a tour of the greatest horror anthology segments of all time.

Digging into the dark underbelly of the human psyche can be an ugly business. Just ask any of those involved in the making of some of horror’s most notorious movies. As filmmaking and storytelling methods evolve, it allows more freedom to those who choose to explore areas that many would prefer remain hidden. But this often prompts us to ask rabidly debated questions like, ‘Just how far is too far?’
Way before the days when watching a film banned in your country was simply a matter of a quick illegal download to side step the censors, the MPAA and BBFC were much more of a force to be reckoned with. Now it seems that films are usually old news way before the censors can even touch them.
We have highlighted seven films that were particularly contentious for audiences and censors alike. Most are from those dark days before the internet,...

As Hit Girl swears again, Charlie Lyne remembers Hollywood's other broken taboos
There's a key scene at the beginning of this month's lacklustre superhero sequel Kick-Ass 2 in which Hit-Girl, the film's deadly teenage heroine, protests against a household swear jar recently installed by her legal guardian. It's a knowing callback to the first Kick-Ass, in which the same character – then just 11 years old – famously addressed a gang of villainous henchmen with a word borrowed from the vocabularies of Derek and Clive. With that in mind, the remainder of KA2 plays out as a tedious slog towards the inevitable reprise, which dutifully arrives in the film's final moments. Because we all know it ain't over til the little girl says "cunt".
Ever since cinemagoers declared themselves too sophisticated for the simple thrills of Train Pulling Into A Station, filmmakers have sought out more and more extreme methods of shocking their audiences.

A lot has changed since Alan Jones from Total Film coined the term Splat Pack referring to a group of gory movie makers who sought to stretch the boundaries of what would be considered acceptable in an R rated film. The sea of blood and guts that rolled across the cinema screen starting in 2002 gradually pulled back to low tide. PG-13 became the new R rating once again and the MPAA decided to pull itself up by its bootstraps to enforce its code. For the Splat Pack, originally consisting of Rob Zombie, Eli Roth (the Frank Sinatra of the Pack according to Quentin Tarantino), James Wan, Leigh Whannell, Robert Rodriquez (added later by association), Greg McLean, Neil Marshall, Alexadre Aja and Darren Lynn Bousman, filmmaking has gone as usual, and each has made a substantial contribution to the horror genre in a positive way, testing the limits of our stomach...

Chicago – “The ABCs of Death” may easily rank as the most repugnant two hours I’ve ever had the displeasure of being condemned to review. But don’t let that entice you, gorehounds. It’s also uninspired and thoroughly monotonous. The only thing that scared me was my realization after the first short film had ended that I still had 25 films left to go. This isn’t entertainment. It’s an endurance test.
Consider the vignette about an obese woman who decides, in a fit of depression, to slice off her fat. Her self-mutilation is juxtaposed with footage of a skinny model striking poses in a commercial. The director, Xavier Gens, cuts back and forth between the imagery with such mechanical repetition that the viewer develops a mixture of nauseation and whiplash but not, alas, fear. What a sad encapsulation of modern horror’s exceedingly sorry state. Horror used to be about atmosphere,...

★★☆☆☆ Considering the subject matter of The ABCs of Death (2012), the new compilation horror from producers Ant Timpson and Tim League, it was always going to be - to some degree, at least - controversial. With segments by directors such as Srdjan Spasojevic (A Serbian Film) and Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police), how could it be anything else? Imagine 26 different film directors each being given a letter of the alphabet, before being told to think of a word starting with said letter and base a horror short around it. The result is The ABCs of Death - a film so frankly off-the-radar, it almost defies description.

Plot: 26 filmmakers from around the world were each given one letter of the alphabet. From there they had free rein to create a killer short horror film based around words ranging from “Apocalypse” to “Zetsumetsu.”
Who’S It For? Some segments will be loved, others hated, but anyone who likes the idea of a horror anthology needs to check this out.

It’s also a wildly uneven anthology collection from some of the most well-known horror directors working today. The film was announced a few years ago and rolled out at the Tiff and Fantastic Fest film festivals in 2012. The premise is intriguing. A letter of the alphabet was assigned to 26 different directors with one stipulation: they must create a short starting with that letter and pertaining to death. Then let them have it, no holds barred.

26 directors got together and put together a film that depicts various ways of being killed according to the alphabet. The result is filled with blood and boobs, and it’s totally insane.
The ABC’s of Death is what happens after people in Hollywood decide to make a film after spending a whole night indulging in hardcore drinking and controlled pharmaceuticals. The trailer doesn’t offer much in way of plot but there’s plenty of gore to go around, along with boobs, blood, and various furry animals doing nasty things to different parts of the anatomy.
From a woman stepping into a shower with a chainsaw to give herself a home-style breast reduction to a guy punching a dog during a unique fight-to-the-death, this is one film where you won’t be able to guess what’s coming. Oh, did I mention the Claymation horror story? Yeah, there’s one of those,...

Right from the start, the anthology horror film The ABCs of Death, produced by Ant Timpson and Tim League, comes with one major handicap: The film is divided into twenty-six individual chapters, each helmed by a different director (spanning fifteen countries), and each assigned a letter of the alphabet. The directors were given carte blanche to indulge in their most grotesque impulses. Each letter is presented sequentially, and the director’s chosen word is revealed only at the end of each short – sometimes as a punch line or a revelation, and often to underscore or enlighten the segment’s theme.

Alright, before you jump the gun and judge Remy and I based on David Edelstein’s over-reactionary yet sickly fitting genre-describing term, just know “torture porn” doesn’t exactly depict the actions on-screen with exact duplication. No, we aren’t watching people fornicate and kill each other simultaneously. Well, at least I’m not, can’t exactly speak for what Remy does in his free time, but the term “torture porn” is more of a horror sub-genre description which focuses mightily on artistic visual gore over deeply rooted story material. Stress on the torture, soft on the porn, depending on the film that is.
Remy: So, you’re telling me “torture porn” Isn’T when my girlfriend and I…
Nato: No, whatever you’re about to say, no.
The History
“Torture porn” isn’t new by any means, but like other recent movements, the past decade has seen a large resurgence of sub-genre specific films.
