Jerry Moss, the Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer who co-founded A&m Records with Herb Alpert more than 60 years ago and helped build it into one of the most successful independent record labels in history, died today in Los Angeles. He was 88.
His family shared the news in a statement to the Associated Press.
Nazareth’s Top 10 hit ‘Love Hurts,’ 1975
Named for its co-founders, the artist-focused A&m Records was launched in 1962 and has boasted such hitmaking and influential acts as The Police, Quincy Jones, The Carpenters, Carole King, Styx, Janet Jackson, Peter Frampton, The Go-Go’s, Supertramp, Rita Coolidge, Joe Cocker, Sheryl Crow, Bryan Adams, Humble Pie, The Tubes, Oingo Boingo, Cat Stevens/Yusuf, Nazareth and, of course, Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass. Billy Preston had a pair of No. 1 singles for the label with “Will It Go Around in Circles” and “Nothing From Nothing” in the mid-1970s.

Relativity Media will bring you Loomis Fargo, an action/heist/comedy starring Jim Carrey.
How do I know? This fancy press release told me so:
Relativity Media has acquired worldwide rights to finance, produce and distribute the action-comedy heist film currently titled Loomis Fargo starring Jim Carrey, it was announced today by Relativity. The project, directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre), based on an original screenplay by Emily Spivey (Up All Night) and written by Chris Bowman (The Wrong Brother) and Hubbel Palmer (Humble Pie), is targeted to start production in North Carolina this April.
Inspired by true events, Loomis Fargo tells the story of a disgruntled bank employee who is ready to take a chance and risk it all for love, money, and a life he’s only dreamed of. Teaming up with his work crush, they conspire to rob the financial institution. Together with their accomplices,...

Now the only thing tougher than pulling off the heist – will be getting away with it.

Why Watch? In 2007, Kate Hudson made her first movie as a director (complete with a Humble Pie reference), and the free spirit of youth and antique love is on full display. Kristen Stewart‘s best work might also be on display. She and Dakota Fanning play young girls discovering true desire, but instead of dumb boys, they’re swooning over a classic car and a sweet guitar. Virginia Madsen and Kurt Russell play a father and mother (each responding to their offspring’s Must Have Mentality), and the whole simple story plays out with the tension that comes naturally from needing something badly without knowing if you’ll get it. It’s something anyone who has ever had to haggle over the price of something they’re pretending not to care about knows. Hudson and company capture the sentiment well – the heart of it residing in Stewart’s eyes as she first spots a shiny Cutlass with...

2009 is about to end with a bang, though probably not the apocalyptic kind predicted in the long-awaited adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" or Chris Smith's terrifying doc "Collapse," though those will both be playing at your local arthouse. Instead, audiences will be able to enjoy a winter of wildly different indie film offerings to reflect the wildly different tastes of moviegoers as we leave one decade and move into another. (There are also many different ways to watch them, as you can tell from our Anywhere But a Movie Theater section.)
From November through January, there will be musicals ("Nine"), comedies (Broken Lizard's "The Slammin' Salmon") and stop-motion animated wonderments ("A Town Called Panic") to entertain and new films from Michael Haneke, Pedro Almodóvar, Richard Linklater, Terry Gilliam and Werner Herzog to ponder. And if new movies aren't necessarily doing the trick, you can always cozy...
