Los Angeles – Saban Films announced today that they have acquired North American rights to Richard Bates Jr.’s horror thriller Tone-Deaf. You guys, this trailer for Olivia Wilde’s new movie A Vigilante is here, and it is freaking amazing. This is pretty much my dream, to be a badass vigilante that takes out abusive men on a power trip, giving them a taste of their own medicine, a la Evelyn Couch from Fried Green Tomatoes when she channels Towanda and says, “…And after I wipe out all the punks of this world, I’ll take on the wifebeaters, like Frank Bennett, and machine gun their genitals. Towanda on the Rampage!” Not that I’ve thought much on the subject… but I digress.
Wilde plays the character Sadie, “who has decided to devote herself to removing domestic abusers, using specific methods to obscure her identity and guarantee they won't return to bother their victims ever again.” The cast also includes Morgan Spector, Tonye Patano, Kyle Catlett, and C.J. Wilson. The film...

"You start to feel like there's no escape." Saban Films has debuted the first trailer for an indie dramatic thriller titled A Vigilante, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Sarah Daggar-Nickson. This first premiered at the SXSW Film Festival last year to some strong reviews, and has been playing at smaller fests, arriving in Us theaters this March. Olivia Wilde stars as a woman who has decided to devote herself to removing domestic abusers, using specific methods to obscure her identity and guarantee they won't return to bother their victims ever again. The cast includes Morgan Spector, Kyle Catlett, C.J. Wilson, and Tonye Patano. This is definitely a provocative, and maybe controversial film (depending on your views), where violence is being used for good - but this is what makes it an interesting film worthy of your attention. North American rights to Johnny Depp’s drama “Richard Says Goodbye” have been sold to Saban Films and DirecTV for about $3 million with a 2019 theatrical release planned.
Depp portrays the titular Richard — a college professor who is given a life-changing diagnosis and then decides to throw all pretense and conventions to the wind and live his life as boldly and freely as possible. He smokes, drinks, has sex, and insults anyone who annoys him. The cast also includes Zoey Deutch and Rosemarie DeWitt.
CAA Media Finance brokered the deal. The film was screened in Toronto on Sept. 6, the opening day of the Toronto Film Festival, but was not part of the official festival lineup.
Wayne Roberts directed from his own script. The project was first announced last year at the Cannes Film Festival with Stuart Ford’s Im Global — which was subsequently acquired by the now-bankrupt Global Road — fully financing the project.

Women directors will feature strongly in the main competition section of the Bucheon International Film Festival, Asia’s largest genre movie event. Women also take growing screen time.

A Vigilante is one bitter taste of gender-fueled revenge that doesn’t immediately kick-you-in-the-teeth, yet still packs its punches in small but measured doses. I applaud the film Sarah Daggar-Nickson created versus the one preconceptions made me assume. Women protagonists in these positions are usually subjected to unspeakably demeaning atrocities (shown to viewers) – hence why “rape revenge” is an entire subgenre – but Nickson doesn’t require such instigation.
Enter a grieving female forced into action, failed by systems and teachings ingrained in our societal constructs that make victims out of the innocent. You’ll get your revenge here, but more importantly, the message that comes along with it. Harrowingly doled out, bloody-knuckled and raw as hell.
This isn’t I Spit On Your Grave. Nickson’s “hero” survives a hauntingly attainable catalyst that leads to salvation for many more current and would-be casualties. Cinematography and direction stress what’s most important,...

A taut revenge fantasy that takes the traumatic roots of its crime-fighting spree very seriously, Sarah Daggar-Nickson's A Vigilante casts Olivia Wilde as a woman who narrowly escapes an abusive household, then turns herself into a mysterious champion for others. Putting a deliberately unromantic spin on its wish-fulfillment scenario, the film scratches a genre itch without using it as an excuse, a la Eli Roth's morally bankrupt Death Wish remake, for vicarious sadism. Though its austerity limits commercial appeal, the timely pic will earn support on the fest circuit and would likely fare well in arthouses.

Rockin' The Suburbs In Sydney's lush northern suburbs, writer Sarah Daggar-nickson, actor Xavier Samuel and director Scott Otto Anderson are working away on the dark drama Dream Life, the winner of last year's Optus ONE80Project. The crumbling mansion had been empty for some time. The ageing dwelling, located in one of Sydney's wealthiest districts, is especially spooky today with a wind and rain show outside. It's the ideal setting for what writer Sarah Daggar-Nickson calls "modern gothic suburbia". Inside, most of the Dream Life crew is on the lower floor, working on a pivotal scene of the hour-long TV drama.
