One picketer said it best: “The longer this strike goes, the more detailed these signs get.”
Judging by some of those Simpsons-themed placards, he’s not wrong. But there have also been lots of not-so-veiled references to some of the ongoing strike coverage. (Don’t recognize the reference to Carol Lombardini and The Cheesecake Factory? Read this story. Can’t remember the exact quote about putting people out of their homes? That notorious line originated here.)
Some of the signs also just show signs of fatigue. “I’m gonna be honest I’m running out of clever sign memes,” said one. “Cause, like, seriously?”
It’s now day 120 of the WGA strike and Day 47 of the SAG-AFTRA strike. Here’s what some picketers have to say these days about walking the line.

Marvel Studios celebrated Simu Liu’s birthday by giving us all a present: the first trailer for Shang Chi and the Ten Rings. And there’s a lot to get excited about: a ripped Liu kicking several things; some of the best looking fight shots in the MCU to date; Awkwafina being generally delightful.
Watch it here if you haven’t already…
But buried in the middle of the trailer was a very quick flash of something fascinating:
Was that an Iron Fist?
Iron Fist and the MCU
Up until now, the first character who jumps to mind when you think “Marvel martial artists” is likely Danny Rand, the Iron Fist. Rand was part of Marvel’s wave of characters capitalizing on mid-70s pop culture. He was created by Roy Thomas, Gil Kane, and Bill Everett, and he had some staying power: he was spun out of Marvel Premiere...

Written by Duane Swierczynski | Art by Simone Guglielmini, Raffaele Semeraro | Published by Titan Comics/Hard Case Crime
Titan Comics’ imprint, Hard Case Crime, comes out with this collection of the Breakneck series, written by Duane Swierczynski, a man certainly familiar with the crime comic genre. He’s worked on Marvel books in the past, such as Deadpool: Wade Wilson’s War and some of the Idw Judge Dredd books. His writing is gritty and on-point and the experience he’s cultivated over the years is felt strongly in Breakneck.
Artists Simone Guglielmini, whose prior work includes Near Death and Bubbles O’Seven, and Raffaele Semeraro, who worked on The Dragonfly from Kid Comics, do a good job too, the visuals are mottled and grungy yet with the right amount of vibrancy that makes things pop at the right times. The colour work, from Lovern Kindzierski and Chris Chuckry is very nice too.

"...right before they kill you, they'll start to twitch..." Its eerie music (coupled perfectly with artwork by Richard P. Clark) is reminiscent of a John Carpenter movie, but the trailer for John Carpenter's Tales of Science Fiction: Twitch #2 teases a new adventure on the printed page rather than the big screen, one that looks to be just as cinematic—and scary—as the stories told from Carpenter's lens.

Rogue One‘s motley crew of traitors, saboteurs, terrorists and criminals made for a fascinating departure from usual Star Wars fare, their all-too-brief on-screen appearances leading fans to speculate about the exciting adventures they’d been on prior to the events of the film. One of the biggest questions was how Cassian and his droid buddy K-2So came to travel with one another. It’s something that many fans have been wondering about and now, a new comic book is going to fill in that particular blank, telling us precisely how Cassian first encountered K-2So and liberated him from the slavery of Imperial servitude.
The full title is Star Wars: Rogue One – Cassian & K-2So Special #1, to be written by Duane Swierczynski and illustrated by Fernando Blanco. As yet, we don’t know what the meat of the story is, but we do have the cover for...

X-Force/Cable: Messiah War #1, X-Force (Vol. 3) #14-16, Cable (Vol. 2) #13- 15 (2009) Written by Craig Kyle, Chris Yost, and Duane Swierczynski Art by Michale Choi, Clayton Crain, Ariel Olivetti, and Sonia Oback Colored by Sonia Oback Published by Marvel Comics
There’s a certain trend in most stories where the characters go through some sort of change or growth by the end of the story; they’re no longer the same or in the same position as they were in the beginning. After all, this is the point of a story. “Messiah War”, the Cable/X-Force crossover, completely ignores this crucial aspect of storytelling and winds up being the crossover where nothing happens. “Messiah War” is a seven part crossover that never needed to happen, starring Cable the babysitter and the worst X-Force roster ever assembled.[1] Although it’s not the worst X-Over of all time, “Messiah War” has very little working in its favor.

One of my favorite aspects of the Og Valiant comics were the cameo first appearances. It was a two-piece of goodness, making it fun for the reader, never knowing when the next star of their own book was going to make a benign presence in the background of any panel of a comic they were reading, while also feeding the speculation machine keeping your books hot in the street. Such a simple tactic made the reader feel like they were part of the process; that anything could matter. I think this was important post-Unity because a lot of the Valiant readership came late to the party, which is part of the reason those initial backissues skyrocketed, and giving those people something that was “theirs” definitely worked for me. You weren’t too late. You were fashionably late. It was the unique mix of getting great story plus picking up and...

The launch of Archie Comics' mature division is spearheaded by The Black Hood #1. Reminiscent of the now classic tales of the Minutemen and resembling Hooded Justice from that team, you have a rather solid idea of what direction we can expect the new monthly title to move in. However, it is darker in tone if you can even imagine that.
The first issue of The Black Hood kicks off the five-part story arc entitled "The Bullet's Kiss." When Philadelphia police officer Greg Hettinger stepped into the middle of a gunfight, hot lead shredded his face—and he pulled the trigger, blind. Now Greg is waking up in a world where he’s a killer, hopelessly scarred and hooked on painkillers. What does a man do when he can no longer face the world, yet still wants to do good? He puts on a hood…
I really enjoyed the rough imagery...

I know it says “Dark Circle” on the cover. In the past the cover has said “Red Circle” and before that “Archie” and before that “Mlj.” But it’s all Archie Comics to me, and I mean that as a compliment.
I think their first “Dark Circle” comic book was The Fox, by Dean Haspiel and Mark Waid. I loved it. I say “I think” because comics publishers do reboots faster than elves make shoes. Maybe the next Fox by Haspiel and Waid will restart the series again. But, for conversation’s sake, let’s say last week’s Black Hood #1 by Duane Swierczynski and Michael Gaydos was the second Dark Circle title.
And that’s where I got confused.
First, for the record, I liked this latest Black Hood. Like most contemporary comics, there wasn’t enough story in the first issue for me to make a real commitment,...

Archie Comics is undergoing a creative renaissance. It started with Afterlife with Archie (2013), which re-imagined the kid-friendly world of Riverdale as a survival-horror zombie series. It made Archie the most culturally relevant it’s been in years, and they’ve been capitalizing on that book’s success with more forays into mature-reader comics. The Black Hood #1 launches Archie Comics’ new superhero universe, which will be published under the imprint Dark Circle Comics.
Launching a superhero universe in comics from scratch can be a daunting task with the Big Two destined to remain the top competitors in this industry for many more years to come. Valiant did so admirably when they relaunched their entire world in 2012 to great success. Three years in, and they’re still expanding. Dark Circle...

In this all-new tale, we learn of the pair’s first meeting, well before their first comic book appearance in New Mutants #98, as Cable and his soon to be X-Force race through the timestream to stop the reckless mercenary Deadpool before he destroys American history for good! “Deadpool's gone back to key points in American military history: the Battle of Germantown during the Revolutionary War; Gettysburg during the Civil War, and then... well, I can't say anything else, because you know how one little musket ball has a funny of changing the course of human events,” says series writer Duane Swierczynski. Harkening back to the earliest days of X-Force, this series promises to offer a time-jumping tale featuring that truly resonates the style and tone of the 90’s as Swierczynski is quick to emphasize, “Oh There Will Be Guns, 90s style, although in some cases they'll be fused with some...

Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Price: $3 (Digital)

Coined “Project Dark Sky,” there’s no real narrative for the event other than some half-assed Arg hinting at psychic powers and alien invasions. It apparently has seven core titles, some of which I’ve only just glimpsed passing over on the rack on new comics day. That’s ambitious. But the whole gig is kind of pointless to me, because they...

Writer: Duane Swierczynski
Art: Nelson Daniel & Steve Scott
Colours: John-Paul Bove
Letterer: Shawn Lee
Publisher: Idw & 2000Ad
Purchase: http://www.tfaw.com/Profile/Judge-Dredd-17___444681
One of the reasons Judge Dredd has been an iconic character for decades is the series’ ability to mimic any number of styles all within the same city. From sci-fi epics, to thought provoking examinations on the American Dream, Judge Dredd may encompass any style at any given time. But every once in awhile fans are treated to sheer chaos and horror in the form of the Dark Judges. The fan favourites from the 2000 Ad line make the leap over the pond in Idw’s Dredd stable. But is this another classic or are the creative team in over their head?
Writer Duane Swierczynski wastes no time in getting to the carnage. From page one to the very end, Mega-City One is engulfed in chaos.

Martin Amis, Ian Rankin and Jackie Collins are among fellow authors and fans paying tribute to the Us crime writer
Fans and fellow writers have paid tribute to Us crime writer Elmore Leonard after he died yesterday, from complications associated with a stroke suffered in July.
Award-winning crime writer Ian Rankin told the Guardian: "Elmore Leonard could write hard-boiled and soft-boiled. He could make you laugh at a one-liner and wince at a scene of brutal violence. He could write westerns, crime stories, and political satire. And all of it in the leanest prose imaginable. In short, he was a master."
The style and humour of Leonard's writing won him fans across the globe during a 60-year career in which he wrote 45 novels, including Get Shorty in 1990, which catapulted him to fame when it became a blockbuster film starring John Travolta.

Horror fans will have a lot of choices to make as the "Bates Motel" panel battles the one-two punch of Godzilla and Seventh Son. Later in the day you'll be faced with choosing to learn more about "True Blood," Telltale's The Walking Dead video game, or "Being Human." Right now 20th Century Fox's presentation that runs at the same time remains "To Be Announced," but once details are revealed, we'll provide an update.
Other panels vying for your attention throughout the day are "The Originals," "Grimm," I, Frankenstein teamed with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (that combination should make for some interesting audience reactions), a look at gameplay from Dead Rising 3 on the Xbox One, more games, comics,...

It’s payback time! After Dr. Emanuel Kuretich freed Bloodshot from Project Rising Spirit, he promised that the answers to Bloodshot’s identity would be found inside Prs’ secret Nevada facility. He lied. Instead, Bloodshot discovered two dozen super-powered psiot children – children that Kuretich then manipulated him into setting free. Now that the kids are out and have ignited the Harbinger Wars on the Vegas strip, Bloodshot is all that stands between them and the opposing forces of Toyo Harada and Peter Stanchek. But Bloodshot hasn’t forgotten about Kuretich. And he’s about to reap his revenge.
