A man’s inability to tell dreams from reality makes for a smart premise but alarms sound when the plot begins to unravel
At one point in this British drama, Theo (Cristian Solimeno), the sharp-tongued bullying employer of protagonist Zel (Laurie Calvert), describes the latter as having all the charm of a “pubic hair in a cheese sandwich”. That’s maybe a bit harsh, but not entirely wrong. Introverted, shuffling young twentysomething Zel is far less engaging than practically every other character in the film, from his nagging mum (Sadie Frost) who swings by briefly to complain about his flat’s hygiene and is barely seen again, to the more compelling figure of Elliot (Billy Zane), Zel’s enigmatic, only-a-bit-creepy neighbour who gets him into lucid dreaming as way to deal with his social anxiety.

Zel (Laurie Calvert) is sleepwalking through life, part-funded by parental handouts and interrupted only occasionally by other people. He has a crush on a neighbour (Felicity Gilbert) and is in conflict with his boss at work, situations that he lacks the confidence or constitution to resolve. When another neighbour, Elliot (Billy Zane), suggests that he use lucid dreaming to rehearse different problem solving scenarios in his sleep, Zel starts to draw strength from his successes in the subconscious. However, when these increasingly vivid extrapolations become indistinguishable from real-life decisions he starts to lose his grip on reality.

Cast: George MacKay, Donald Sumpter, Felicity Gilbert
Steve McQueen, Ben Wheatley and Andrea Arnold might be leading the charge of new British filmmaker talents and are already well-established internationally with more than three features in, but filmmaker Duane Hopkins (2008′s Better Things) will surely become a household name member of the clique. Hopkins revisits a shipwrecked youth generation featuring George MacKay (who recently shined in another new filmmaking talent in Paul Wright’s For Those in Peril) and Felicity Gilbert (appears in Lars Von Trier’s Nymphomaniac: Volume I as the dissed secretary). Worth mentioning: Danny Bensi & Saunder Jurriaans also collaborated on the project.
Gist: This shows in graphic detail the life of Tim (MacKay). His habits, his hustle, his family, his responsibilities, his conflicts, his hopes, his fears, his character, his existence. Through this we understand his present,...

The first full, official trailer for Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac has released and to no surprise it looks like a Lars von Trier film. While the explicit nature of the film is sure to rouse the most attention, there clearly is a storyline here and it could prove to be fascinating, though talk of a five-and-a-half-hour cut does seem to be pushing the boundaries of what an audience may be able to take given the snippets we see here. Nymphomaniac tells the story of self-diagnosed nymphomaniac, Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg), from birth to the age of 50. On a cold winter's evening the old, charming bachelor, Seligman (Stellan Skarsgard), finds Joe beaten up in an alley. He brings her home to his flat where he cares for her wounds while asking her about her life. He listens intently as Joe over the next 8 chapters recounts the lushly branched-out and multi faceted story of her life,...
