Loosely organised documentary shows Swedish singer-songwriter González musing about mental health and drifting around his luxurious-looking house
A portrait of Swedish singer-songwriter José González, who is also part of the beat combo Junip, this low-key documentary plays like a cross between a home movie aimed at González superfans, a showreel demonstrating visual effects techniques and a video lookbook for a Scandinavian lifestyle brand specialising in leisurewear and throw rugs. In practice, that means this narratively unstructured piece splices together footage of González hanging out, reading or exercising as the camera pans slowly around the Swedish countryside where he lives in a lovely house. Sometimes we see his pregnant partner Hannele Fernström, an illustrator and designer, resting and reading a book. Occasionally, we follow the couple’s very young daughter Laura as she capers about in the grass and high-summer light while wearing adorable, covetable Scandi kids clothes or babbles charmingly.

Ruben Östlund and Erik Hemmendorff’s company Plattform Produktion has issued an apology to Berlin-based Argentinian artist Lola Arias over the use of her name in the 2017 Cannes Palme d’Or Winner The Square.
“We understand that the use of Lola Arias’ name, which was not discussed as clearly as it should have been, created a misunderstanding connecting her work as an artist to the artwork The Square (Rutan) shown in the film,” the company said in a statement.
“After meeting the artist in Berlin and discussing the misperception caused, we would like to emphasize that The Square (Rutan) is an artwork originally created by Ruben Östlund and Kalle Boman for the city of Värnamo, Sweden in 2015. All reference to the artist Lola Arias as the creator of the artwork is fictional,” it continued.

Oscar-nominated and double Palme d’Or winning film company Plattform Production has premiered its latest film, “A Tiger in Paradise,” by director and editor Mikel Cee Karlsson, as part of a live event that received a standing ovation at Cph:dox, one of Europe’s leading documentary film festivals.
Set in the picturesque Swedish countryside, the doc takes viewers on a surreal journey into the inner world of Swedish indie folk singer-songwriter José González.
Peppered with songs from his latest album “Local Valley,” introspective musings, self-deprecation and playful special effects involving moving portraits, looping techniques and Conway’s famous Game of Life computation model, the film opens with a disarmingly candid disclosure by González about his past mental health issues.
Karlsson tells Variety: “We used José’s mental illness as a jumping off point, in a way, to discuss themes that both of us think are really interesting. We read a lot of the same books.

Ace Eddies: ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ ‘Everything Everywhere’ win over Oscar rivals for Best Film Editing
“Top Gun: Maverick” got a big boost in its bid for Best Editing at the Oscars with a win at the Ace Golden Eddie Awards on March 5. It prevailed in the drama race at these awards bestowed by American Cinema Editors over two of its Oscar rivals –“Elvis” and “Tár ” — as well as “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “The Woman King.”
Another of the Oscar nominees, “Everything Everywhere All at Once ” won the comedy/musical category over the fifth Oscar contender, “The Banshees of Inisherin,” plus “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”, “The Menu” and “Triangle of Sadness.”
Since 1990, the film that came up with one of the ACEs went on to win the top prize at the Academy Awards 18 times, including the 2020 winner for best drama editing, “Parasite.” And in 10 of the 14 years when the Ace barometer was wrong, at least one of the Eddie champs was a contender for Best Picture.

American Cinema Editors announced winners in 14 categories March 5 during the 73rd annual Ace Eddie Awards. And all five Oscar nominees were included among the nominations — though spread out between two categories.
Historically, the Eddie winner for theatrical drama has also won the Academy Award 13 of 22 times‚ but not in the last three years. Whether or not that streak will hold remains murky since Oscar nominees “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” both took home trophies.
“The Woman King” director Gina Prince-Bythewood received the Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award, while film editors Lynne Willingham and Don Zimmerman received Career Achievement Awards.
Other winners included awards season faves “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” “Fire of Love,” and “The Bear.” See the complete list of winners, marked in bold, below.

The best movie involving a boat since “Titanic” with the best vomiting sequence since “Team America: World Police,” Ruben Östlund’s “Triangle of Sadness” is an energetic and wacky examination of class, gender norms and culture, woven into a dynamite script. After debuting at Cannes, Östlund’s English-language debut will finally introduce the Swedish writer and director to more mainstream American audiences, and possibly even Oscar voters.
The film tells the story of Carl (Harris Dickenson) and Yaya (Charlbi Dean), two fashion models and a celebrity couple who in three narrative chapters explore their roles in each other’s lives — following a dinner date, a luxury cruise and a shocking x-factor that presents an interesting turn of events.

5) The Flaming Lips & Bon Iver “Ashes In The Air”
Kicking off this week’s 5 Best Music Videos Of The Week is the latest from both The Flaming Lips and Bon Iver. This collaboration caused quite a stir and the video created an even bigger outrage. The pairing of The Flaming Lips and Bon Iver on paper sounds really cool and promising but in reality the outcome is a bit too weird and disappointing. The video follows the adventures of an astronaut which feature splattered brains and half-nude figures. This is probably the strangest thing the Lips have placed their name against in a decade.
4) Tyler, The Creator “Ifhy”
Directed by Wolf Haley

It's pretty embarrassing that I live in New York City and haven't been to a Rooftop Films event yet, since their whole thing is showing awesome indie movies -- many of them New York premieres -- in awesome outdoor venues (in my defense, I'm incredibly lazy). I met the guys who founded and run Rooftop at South by Southwest this year, and they're smart, passionate, and cool. They even funnel one dollar from every ticket sold to Rooftop screenings to a grant they dispense to filmmakers they like in order to help them fund future projects (SXSW selection "The City Dark," for example, was made with Rooftop funds).
For their fifteenth summer film series, Rooftop's pulled out all the stops. Highlights include the NYC premieres of Fantastic Fest favorite "Sound of Noise" (with a live performance by the film's "musical terrorists" [!!!]) and "Bellflower," one of my favorite films of the year so far,...

Indie singer songwriter Jose Gonzalez - don't let the name fool you, he's Swedish - has followed an unlikely path to become one of the darlings of the music scene. A sort of modern Nick Drake, Gonzalez was charting a career path as low key as his music until the day came that Sony decided to use one of his songs in a global ad campaign. And, boom, an international star was born. A painstaking, meticulous writer, Gonzalez takes his time between albums to make sure everything is exactly right and now Swedish documentary The Extraordinary Ordinary Life Of Jose Gonzalez offers an intimate look at his creative process.
With a combination of video diary, surveillance camera, concert and tour footage as well as animations the filmmakers Mikel Cee Karlsson and Fredrik Egerstrand have followed one of Sweden's most interesting artists José González. The film was shot over a three...
