Red Rainbow, a drama series with Lgbtqia+ elements set in 1979 Soviet Union, has been selected as the winner of the Series Mania Forum Best Project Award to kick off European TV confab’s annual Co-Pro Pitching Sessions. A check for €50,000 was presented Monday to producer Alexander Rodnyansky of Ar Content/Non-Stop Production and writer Matt Jones for the eight-episode series, which was selected by a jury who heard pitches from 15 projects.

Italian actor Toni Servillo (“The Great Beauty”) is set to star in “Il ritorno di Casanova,” a drama about what happens to a great lover when he gets older, to be directed by Oscar-winner Gabriele Salvatores (“Mediterraneo”).
Loosely based on Austrian author Arthur Schnitzler‘s novella “Casanova’s Homecoming,” in which the Venetian libertine is having trouble contending with the fact that he’s over 60, “Ritorno di Casanova,” which translates as “Casanova’s Return,” is co-written by Salvatores with “The Great Beauty” screenwriter Umberto Contarello and Sara Mosetti.
Taking his cue from Schnitzler’s use of parallel narratives — Schnitzler’s novella “Dream Story” was the basis for Stanley Kubrick’s non-linear “Eyes Wide Shut” — Salvatores is weaving his new take on the Casanova myth using that technique.
One story strand sees the ageing Casanova hosted by a friend in the Venetian countryside “where one of the guests is a proto-feminist named Marcolina,...

English-language version of story that was adapted into 1963 Luchino Visconti film announced.
Italy’s Indiana Production has acquired rights to Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s acclaimed novel The Leopard and is lining up an English-language TV adaptation.
Fabrizio Donvito, Marco Cohen and Benedetto Habib of Indiana Production, Daniel Campos Pavoncelli and Ilaria Castiglioni will produce the chronicle of Sicilian society at the time of Italian unification.
“It will be a saga that retells the story of a country during its most profound changes, which involved the whole of Europe,” Donvito, founding partner at Indiana Production, said.
“As so clearly said in the novel, ‘Everything needs to change, so everything can stay the same.’ I can’t think of a more contemporary phrase to describe the times we currently live in, where some forces want to prevent real and needed changes, and the indecision of a few will weigh on the majority.”
