CNN reached a new record high with its 2024 New Year’s Eve special as hosts Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen brought booze back to the live celebration. The Sunday night telecast averaged 2.33 million total viewers during primetime across platforms through two days of viewing, 802,000 of which were among the adults 25-54 demographic. That’s a 12% jump from the previous year, making it the second largest audience on record since it began airing in 2007. The 2020 special currently holds the record with 2.6 million total viewers.
Viewership peaked during the 11 pm-12:30 am block, hitting 3.4 million viewers as those at home waited to ring in the new year. 1.24 million viewers within that group were also among the key adults 25-54 cable demo.
When looking digital viewing, that audience number grew to a combined average audience of 3.44 million total viewers across platforms, adding a 0.8% lift to the CNN TV average audience for New Year’s Eve.

In an interview, Amazon’s sports chief Jay Marine called playoff rights an ‘important’ part of the company’s potential NBA bid.
Is a deal between the NBA and Amazon already a slam dunk? Nothing is set in stone yet, particularly as the league’s exclusive negotiating window with Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery for its next broadcast deal doesn’t even start until March. But once that window concludes other suitors will be able to join the fray, and Disney and Wbd have both made it known they’re going to pursue smaller packages of NBA games when their current broadcast deal expires after the 2024-25 season.
A new report indicates Amazon wants playoff rights in any package of games it gets from the NBA. Currently, all NBA playoff games are shown on ESPN or TNT. Another report states Netflix is interested in making a documentary about the NBA,...

A 12-hour daily bloc of sports talk was first introduced to Freevee and Prime Video last year, but the experiment is already ending.
The sports entertainment business can be a brutal one to be employed in, as so many ESPN hosts and staffers found out earlier this year. Now it’s Amazon making cuts to its sports segment, specifically the 12-hour daily “Sports Talk” bloc that first debuted on the service in 2022.
Richard Deitsch, a writer for The Athletic first reported the news on Twitter. Deitsch said that Amazon had decided to sunset the “Sports Talk” lineup on Prime Video and Freevee by the end of October.

Stephen Colbert has a new game that many TV networks might like to play.

CNN+ is gone, but some of the big-name anchors who were hired for the service appear to be sticking around for a while.
Chris Licht, the new chairman and CEO at the Warner Bros. Discovery news operation, gave indications at a town hall meeting on Thursday that he intended to find places for some of the popular names that were lured to the company with the promise of new programs for CNN.+ The subscription-based streaming service was scuttled abruptly by the company’s new parent after it completed its acquisition of WarnerMedia from AT&T. Three people familiar with the conversations at the meeting said Licht indicated he wanted to find places for Chris Wallace, the one-time Fox News anchor, and Audie Cornish, the NPR veteran, appearing in parts of the company’s portfolio. He also said Kasie Hunt, who was hired from NBC News, has been appearing in current CNN programming.

Warner Bros. Discovery is shutting down CNN+ as of April 30, marking one of the company’s first significant maneuvers since completing the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery less than two weeks ago.
The decision puts an abrupt end to an ambitious and aggressive venture that people familiar with the matter say rankled David Zaslav, the new CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, from the start. Zaslav was annoyed by the decision of Jason Kilar, the former CEO of WarnerMedia when it was owned by AT&T, to launch CNN+ just weeks before Discovery was set to take over operations. But he was unable to communicate with WarnerMedia management, owing to legal boundaries surrounding the merger process.
“This decision is in line with Wbd’s broader direct-to-consumer strategy,” said Chris Licht, the incoming CEO of CNN, in a statement. “In a complex streaming market, consumers want simplicity and an all-in service, which provides...

A recent decision by parent company Warner Bros. Discovery will make it difficult to add viewers to CNN+.
Warner Bros. Discovery has decided to suspend external marketing for the recently launched subscription streaming-news service, according to a person familiar with the venture, making the task of luring new subscribers exponentially more difficult. CNN and Warner Bros. Discovery declined to make executives available to discuss the matter, which was previously reported by Axios.
And yet, life continues apace for the anchors and correspondents tasked with producing the programs for the new venue, which launched three weeks ago and was seen as CNN’s stab at bringing younger, cord-cutting audiences under its massive news umbrella at a time when more viewers are migrating to streaming video. None of the CNN+ shows have been canceled, according to three people familiar with the matter. A program for Audie Cornish, the celebrated NPR journalist who...

The long awaited, heavily promoted CNN+ debuts on Tuesday, with a lineup of live and on-demand programming and, in the media world, a dose of doubts.
Among them: Rivals already have staked their space in the streaming universe. The subscription streaming service needs more must-have programming to lure customers already satiated in monthly fees. And CNN+ is launching just weeks from the network getting a new parent, with the combination of Discovery and WarnerMedia, along with new leadership, with Chris Licht scheduled to take over as the network’s new leader in May.
Yet Andrew Morse, Executive VP and Chief Digital Officer, who leading CNN+, is insistent that what the service offers will be unlike anything else out there.
“We are not trying to launch just another streaming service,” he said in an interview late last week. “What we are building is the most essential and engaging direct-to-consumer news subscription service.

Allison Gollust, the chief marketing officer at CNN, has resigned from the network following corporate parent WarnerMedia’s investigation into “issues associated with Chris Cuomo and former Governor Andrew Cuomo,” according to a memo from Jason Kilar, the company’s CEO.
“Performed by a third-party law firm and led by a former federal judge, the investigation was comprehensive and definitive. It was commissioned in September and concluded this weekend, which now allows me to share additional information with you,” Kilar said. “Based on interviews of more than 40 individuals and a review of over 100,000 texts and emails, the investigation found violations of Company policies, including CNN’s News Standards and Practices, by Jeff Zucker, Allison Gollust, and Chris Cuomo.”
He added: “I realize this news is troubling, disappointing, and frankly, painful to read. These are valid feelings many of you have.”
In a statement, Gollust alleged WarnerMedia was trying to undermine her in public.

Covering the Olympics is like taking a car out for a drive every two years. You’d like to think that the engine will start up every time, but if it’s a machine that lies dormant for too many months in between, there’s no guarantee.
It’s not as if NBC and its various broadcasting partners haven’t been trying to prime their viewers for Tokyo 2020, but up to and through this version of the Summer Games, there’s been a vagueness to what the Olympics actually stand for. Is it a branding bonanza — a Trojan Horse for the bevy of Official Partners to talk up their cars, cleaning wipes, and exercise bikes? Is it a celebration of the virtuous pursuit of athletics? Is it a global symposium — a giant, two-week metaphor for international diplomatic relations (even if it’s one where you’re asked every Opening Ceremonies...

NBCU execs are wrestling with what could be their biggest sports challenge yet: the Quiet Olympics.
Broadcasting and streaming the Tokyo Summer Games already had a high degree of difficulty due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Then Japan declared a state of emergency late last week, and banned live crowds, adding all kinds of new hurdles to the massive production slated to kick off July 23. Will the events seem as powerful and captivating without the roar of the crowd? Can sportscasters communicate the spirit and substance of the games without the hoopla fans have come to expect?
NBC’s top sports exec insists they can.

Kevin Hart and Snoop Dogg are teaming up with Peacock to tackle a new endeavor: recapping the Olympics.
Pairing Hart and Snoop as the comedy guides through the Tokyo Olympics 2021, the commentary series “Olympic Highlights With Kevin Hart and Snoop Dogg” will be exclusively available on NBC’s streaming service. The pair will set out to summarize the Olympics’ most impressive displays of athleticism, as well as the moments that don’t go as planned.
NBCUniversal has remained confident with its plans to broadcast up to 7,000 hours of Tokyo Olympics events. “Olympic Highlights” only reinforces the notion that Peacock will be a critical asset of their strategy.
In addition to Hart and Snoop, late-night host Amber Ruffin will offer her commentary for the streaming service from the ground in Tokyo. Cari Champion and Kenny Mayne, two veteran broadcasters who recently left ESPN, will co-anchor “Tokyo Tonight,” a quick-turnaround highlights and interviews program.

NBCUniversal gave its strongest indication yet that it would move forward with plans to broadcast 7,000 hours of Tokyo Olympics events even as worries continue over the potential health of attendees and athletes as Japan continues to grapple with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
Jeff Shell, NBCU’s CEO, along with other executives present Wednesday at an event designed to preview the company’s plans, suggested a global audience was eager to emerge from an era of forced isolation and enjoy a shared experience and see the event, which has already been postponed by a year. These Games “could be the most meaningful Olympics of our lifetime,” suggested Molly Solomon, the executive producer of NBCU’s Olympics broadcast.
The Olympics are a critical piece of the economic underpinnings of NBCU and its corporate parent, Comcast. The companies paid $4.4 billion for a rights deal that allows NBCU to cover the Olympics in the U.

CBS, NBC and Fox have all had issues with “Thursday Night Football.” Amazon sees possibilities.
The e-commerce and streaming giant believes a new deal with the NFL that gives it sole control over the league’s Thursday-night franchise lends it an opportunity to create new viewing experiences for streamers and chances to work more expansively with advertisers. In the past, Amazon has streamed Thursday games using the feed of the broadcast network producing the telecast, and has only been able to offer a limited amount of commercial inventory around each event.
“We have already devoted a lot of time to thinking about how to use new technologies to drive viewing experiences,” says Marie Donoghue, Amazon’s vice president of global sports video, in an interview. “We think this will be a great opportunity to continue to do that. The opportunities are endless with this relationship.”

Amazon has set broadcast crews and other programming on Prime Video and Twitch for what it is billing as a week-long “NFL Holiday Blitz.”
The spree of football starts today and runs through Saturday’s exclusive stream of the San Francisco 49ers-Arizona Cardinals game, which will mark a milestone for Amazon. The company has steadily ramped up its sports offerings in recent years, part of an effort by several major tech firms to leverage the tune-in potency of live game coverage.
On Christmas Day, Prime Video and Twitch (the gaming-centric streaming platform Amazon acquired in 2014) will offer streams of the Minnesota Vikings-New Orleans Saints game. That complementary stream will follow the season’s Thursday night pattern, with Fox and the NFL Network airing the game on linear TV.

Along with Union and her I’ll Have Another production company, Lodge Freeway Media’s Jemele Hill and Kelley Carter will also executive produce the potential series, which is “centered around Black women who have solidified their careers, achieved financial independence and moved past the awkwardness and money struggles of their twenties,” per its description.
Now in their 30s, the women “must deal with the repercussions their ‘new money’ brings – including hangers-on, false friends, unwanted media attention, and greedy relatives – while also navigating the treacherous world of dating.”
The script for the comedy will be written by Patrik-Ian Polk, who will executive produce alongside Union, Hill and Carter. Holly Shakoor Fleischer is set as a co-executive producer on the project.

Golf’s next big TV event will only feature one professional golfer on the green.
On the day after Thanksgiving, WarnerMedia’s TNT will feature the latest iteration of “The Match,” a celebrity-golf showdown that pits big-name athletes and sports figures against each other in a telecast that nods to charity and owes as much to spectacle as it does to competition. Phil Mickelson, a regular of the series, will team up with Charles Barkley to take on Stephen Curry and Peyton Manning — all in a broadcast that weaves advertisers deeply into the proceedings.
“What we are thinking of is a pop culture event that makes golf much more fast paced and is looking to younger viewers,” says Will Funk, executive vice president of sports partnerships and branded content at Turner Sports, the WarnerMedia sports division, in an interview. “This is a world-class golf competition meets ‘Dancing With The Stars.

When the Milwaukee Bucks refused to take the court for their playoff match-up against the Orlando Magic Wednesday night, they prompted wildcat strikes that swept the U.S. sports landscape and forced the postponement of games across across the NBA, WNBA, Mlb, NHL and Mls. They also turned what was supposed to be a routine telecast — by Covid-era standards — for Zora Stephenson into a breaking-news situation.
Stephenson, the Bucks sideline reporter with Fox Sports Wisconsin, was on the air just before team members read a statement declaring that “our focus today cannot be on basketball,” after Jacob Blake was shot by police in Kenosha, Wisc. and the deadly shooting of protestors days later. In a clip that circulated widely on Twitter that evening, Stephenson, reporting live, told viewers, “When you talk about wanting change, all of us have to ask ourselves, what are we willing to give up? You can talk.

Dozens of ESPN staffers have begun speaking out in internal meetings to fault the sports network for what they describe as a lack of diversity, particularly at the executive ranks, and failure to promote nonwhite talent, according to a report published Monday by the New York Times.
In interviews with two dozen current and former ESPN staffers, the Times detailed “a company that projected a diverse outward face, but did not have enough Black executives, especially ones with real decision-making power.”
Amina Hussein, a Somali-American coordinating producer for some of the sports network’s “signature shows,” was so dismayed by the rapid promotion of white staffers that she advised Black co-workers to leave the company altogether in order to advance in their careers, the Times reported.
Cari Champion, a former “SportsCenter” co-host who left ESPN earlier this year after eight years, blamed her exit on what she called “constant dismissals...

Created by Bozoma Saint John, Cmo at Endeavor, fashion designer Stacey Bende, and bestselling writers Luvvie Ajayi Jones and Glennon Doyle, the campaign will see 46 Black women run the accounts of 46 white women. “When the world listens to women, it listens to white women.
