Exclusive: The door to Westworld was slammed shut today as HBO confirmed that the dystopian sci-fi series will not get a fifth season. It was bad news for anyone associated with the show, led by creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, who had been hoping and advocating for another chapter, but for the main cast, there was some silver lining. I hear they will be paid for Season 5 regardless of the fact that it will not be produced.

HBO science-fiction series “Westworld” has been canceled by the network, IndieWire has confirmed. The news comes three months after the show’s fourth season aired its finale on August 14.
Based on the 1973 Michael Crichton film, “Westworld” focused on the staff, guests, and android residents of the eponymous wild-west themed amusement park, catering to the wealthy. Over the course of four seasons, as the Westworld “hosts” rebelled against their masters, the show expanded its scope to other theme parks run by the same company, and eventually the outside world. The show was created by husband-wife duo Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, and featured a large ensemble cast that included Evan Rachel Wood, Thandiwe Newton, Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson, Luke Hemsworth, Aaron Paul, Angela Sarafyan, James Marsden, Ariana DeBose, Aurora Perrineau, and Daniel Wu.

HBO has canceled “Westworld” after four seasons, the network announced Friday. The news comes just under three months after the series aired its Season 4 finale Aug. 14.
Variety is told a multitude of factors went into the decision to end the sci-drama, including the production’s hefty price tag, combined with dwindling viewership and an ongoing evaluation of programming across the board at HBO’s new parent, Warner Bros. Discovery.
The David Zaslav-run company has been paring back spending as part of a plan to institute 3.5 billion in cost-saving synergies, which the business has promised to find over the next three years post-April merger. However, even on the heels of a rough third-quarter earnings report, Zaslav has continued to underline the importance of healthy content spend, and HBO has several high-profile, big-budget dramas that make it clear the premium cabler isn’t cutting back overall, including “House of the Dragon,...

Westworld Season 4 Episode 7
After watching “Metanoia,” I sat down in the living room with my wife and attempted to explain to her just why Westworld is so much fun for me, and specifically why Ed Harris is such a joy to watch. I spoke about his obvious acting prowess; you don’t get nominated or win as many awards as he has without having chops. I talked a little bit about the character he’s introduced playing, the Man In Black, and how he relates to the fearsome Yul Brynner Gunslinger character from the 1973 film. I talked about how the character, in the fourth season, routinely talks to a Host version of himself about the nature of reality and the philosophical question of what it means to be human. I talked about all the violent set pieces. I talked about the ensemble cast, which only seems to improve every season.

Please remain seated, strapped in and keep all arms and legs inside the thrill-ride that is sure to be “Westworld” Season 4. Premiering June 26, the HBO sci-fi thriller will, according to its new trailer, venture into a new theme park reminiscent of the gangster era.
Adapted from “Jurassic Park” writer Michael Crichton’s 1973 film of the same name, the series stars Evan Rachel Wood, Thandiwe Newton, Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson, Luke Hemsworth, Aaron Paul and Angela Sarafyan. Season 4 will also see James Marsden’s return (the actor was in Season 1 and had a recurring role in Season 2). New cast members for the fourth installment include Oscar winner Ariana DeBose, Aurora Perrineau and Daniel Wu.
Details are scant surrounding the new season, as the show’s EPs and cast remain tight-lipped about what viewers can expect. The trailer doesn’t give much away, except for spooky and dystopian vibes.

James Marsden’s “Westworld” character Teddy Flood is dead but not forgotten. Scratch that – apparently he’s not dead either.
During HBO show’s Atx TV Festival panel Saturday in Austin, Texas, Marsden surprised fans when he joined fellow cast members Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, Luke Hemsworth, Angela Sarafyan and Aurora Perrineau, along with co-creator and executive producer Lisa Joy.
If you remember back to 2018 and the end Season 2 of “Westwood,” a distraught Teddy adjusted his programming and killed himself in front of Dolores (Wood). Of course, no one leaked the news of Teddy’s return — or anything else for that matter.

Two years after its Season 3 finale, HBO’s inscrutable science-fiction series “Westworld” is back. On Monday, HBO revealed a mysterious new trailer for the show ahead of its return on June 26.
Here’s the logline, which – in keeping with the tone of the series – is appropriately secretive: “A dark odyssey about the fate of sentient life on earth.”
The trailer shows off the starry “Westworld” cast, including Evan Rache Wood, Thandiwe Newton, Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson, Luke Hemsworth, and Aaron Paul. Additionally, Season 4 will feature Oscar-winning “West Side Story” star Ariana DeBose in a guest role.
Last year, co-creator Lisa Joy told Deadline that fans could expect to see “some new worlds that I think are really fun” in the new run of episodes.

Ariana DeBose continues to go west. The “West Side Story” star has joined HBO’s “Westworld” in a recurring guest role for the science-fiction series’ upcoming fourth season.

HBO has released the first teaser for the upcoming fourth season of “Westworld,” revealing footage of the next installment to the science-fiction series.
HBO planned the release of the trailer as an easter egg for fans to uncover. The teaser surfaced online to all on Monday evening.
Cryptically titled “It doesn’t look like anything to me,” the teaser unfolds to the rhythm of Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day,” perhaps ironically hinting at a not-so-perfect ordeal for its cast of existentially challenged androids. The teaser offers glimpses at what characters played by Evan Rachel Wood, Thandiwe Newton, Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson, Luke Hemsworth, Aaron Paul and Angela Sarafyan will be up to in the upcoming season.
The teaser features no dialogue, instead unfolding as a series of typically oblique, heady sci-fi images, depicting a dystopian version of New York City, smoke-emitting contraptions, people waltzing in the streets and flies.

Exclusive: Westworld is the latest series hit by the pandemic.

In a depressing, but unsurprising turn of events, given the increase in cases across the country, it joins a number of series that have had to hit pause due to Covid. American Horror Story had to pause season 10, while on the other side of the pond, Deadline has revealed pauses for shows such as House of the Dragon and Bridgerton.

Season 3 picked up three months after the events of the second season with Evan Rachel Wood’s Dolores having escaped Westworld with a few processing cores including that of Jeffrey Wright’s Bernard. Taking residence in neo-Los Angeles in 2058, Dolores developed a relationship with Aaron Paul’s Caleb and came to learn how artificial beings and lower-class humans are treated in the real world. Sphere may not rank amongst elite properties sprung from the deep creative well of Michael Crichton, but the property, defined by the late author’s novel and subsequent adaptation movie, is getting revived as a peak television offering from HBO, which, of course, already happens to house a prominent Crichton adaptation series in Westworld.
HBO revealed that it is developing a Sphere series, for which it has appointed Denise Thé to serve as showrunner, writer and executive producer, bringing recent experience as an executive producer from this past spring’s third season run of Westworld. The series will adapt Crichton’s 1987 novel, which manifested as a sub-maritime sci-fi thriller about a team of scientists who discover a 300-year-old alien spacecraft at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Upon making the deep-sea excursion to explore the technologically advanced vessel, they come upon what seems to be an alien intelligence, called Harry,...

Today we speak with Westworld EP and writer Denise Thé who takes us inside the writers’ room of one of TV’s most genre-bending shows, and how the socially conscious sci-fi action series clicks in all its nuances.
Thé wrote two key episodes this past season, episode 3 “The Absence of Field” in which we step inside Charlotte Hale’s (Tessa Thompson) life in the real world, and learn that she’s having connections problems with her ex-husband and young son. But is it really Charlotte? It seems Dolores has put a different soul (or pearl) into the body of the Delos Boss, and Charlotte can’t stand to be in her own skin to the point of cutting herself. Oh, and it looks like she’s a mole who’s allowed a corporate invader (Vincent Cassel) inside Delos. Thé also penned the chilling season finale “Crisis Theory” in which Dolores...

“Westworld” took itself back offline on Sunday with its Season 3 finale, which drew 1.8 million multiplatform viewers. That’s down 18.2% from the final episode of the Evan Rachel Wood-led sci-fi show’s second season, which scored 2.2 million overall sets of eyeballs in June 2018.
That 1.8 million number was 13% better than last week’s episode. Perhaps that’s why Dolores is smiling.
For its initial 9 p.m. airing alone, the 75-minute Season 3 closer, titled “Decoherence,” earned 888,000 viewers, which is down a whopping 44.5% from the 1.6 million that tuned in to HBO for the 9 o’clock showing of the second season finale on June 24, 2018. Adding in an encore and streaming via HBO Go and HBO Now, and Sunday’s episode rose to that above-mentioned audience tally.

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains details from last night’s Season 3 finale of HBO’s Westworld, “Crisis Theory.”
There are too many pressing questions about what went on in Westworld‘s Season 3 finale, so we checked in with co-creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy and executive producer Denise Thé.
Deadline: So, the Man in Black we saw in the Season 2 finale epilogue — the guy who was being questioned by his daughter Emily — and the guy from the park, and the man we’ve seen in the real world this season, they’re all human?
Jonathan Nolan: We like Ed Harris so much we’d figure let’s cast him in four different roles. There’s the Ed that we see at the end of the second-season finale which is very, very far in the future, further than where we’ve gotten elsewhere in the show. We lay out the...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Crisis Theory,” the Season 3 finale of “Westworld.”
So much happened in the Season 3 finale of “Westworld” — for one, Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) managed to eradicate the all-knowing artificial intelligence Rehoboam, but in doing so seemingly erased herself from existence, all as the real world fell into chaos — that we had to find out what it all meant. Co-creators (and real-life couple) Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy and executive producer Denise Thé, who co-wrote the finale with Nolan, spoke with Variety about the implications for the future of the HBO series, the eerie connection between the finale and the Covid-19 pandemic and whether the fabled six-season run of the show is really in the cards.
So let’s start with the most immediate question: Is Evan Rachel Wood leaving the show?
[Six second pause]
Jonathan Nolan: I f—ing hope not. Let me clarify: Dolores is gone.

“Westworld” Season 3’s violent delights had violent ends on Sunday, when the finale episode, titled “Decoherence,” showed us Dolores’ (Evan Rachel Wood) decision to sacrifice herself in the hopes of saving both human and Hosts alike and giving them the gift of free will — something that she, for so long, went without.
Of course, she didn’t do it alone, getting major assists from her season-long human ally Caleb (Aaron Paul) and longtime frenemy Maeve (Thandie Newton), who ended up defeating Incite Inc boss Serac (Vincent Cassel) by shutting down his supercomputer, Rehoboam. But Dolores’ decision to give up her own life to allow others to break free of their chains was a big one, especially given how much she’s despised humans.

Deftly played by Tessa Thompson (of such big movies as the Creed franchise and Thor: Ragnarok), the actress takes her Delos boss to several nuanced emotional planes we’ve never witnessed before. While Charlotte remains a cutthroat executive –though one who becomes her own enemy in regards to allowing a corporate raider in the door at Delos– as a rebooted host, she’s an absolute mess inside. Tonight, both Charlotte and us, learn that she has an ex-husband and a young son she’s remained distanced from.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Westworld” Season 3, Episode 3, “The Absence of Field.”]
As millions tune into “Westworld” to escape reality, HBO’s sci-fi series has proven it works best when sticking to it — well, its version of the real world anyway. Last week’s entry, “The Winter Line,” spent most of its time screwing around in a digital construct, which turned the low stakes adventures of Maeve (Thandie Newton) into tedious walk-and-talks. This week, “The Absence of Field” dives right back into the real world, and the host version of Charlotte Hale (Tessa Thompson) kept raising curious questions, making bold choices, and discovering critical secrets. Meanwhile, Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) and Caleb (Aaron Paul) help up a revealing B-plot involving a dash of action and a key partnership.

This Westworld review contains spoilers.
Westworld Season 3 Episode 3
One of the problems the hosts often ran into in the first season of Westworld was having their programming rewritten. Rather than wiping the memory completely, Delos just treats the host consciousness like a hard drive, keeping the operating system and general personality intact, then putting in whatever the new narrative is over top of the old one. For popular hosts, like Maeve and Dolores, the result was something akin to a constant state of déjà vu and provided the suffering wheel necessary to kick them out of their preset paths and push them towards consciousness. That was an unintended consequence of humanity’s tinkering. What would be the issues for a host whose consciousness was put into the wrong body?
If you’re the host currently inhabiting the shell of Charlotte Hale, it looks a lot like the real-life mental illness Nssi or Non-Suicidal Self-Injury.

“Westworld” has booked a couple of HBO legends for cameos in its upcoming third season: “Game of Thrones” showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss.
The duo who created HBO’s now-ended epic fantasy series will appear in the second episode of Season 3 of Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s sci-fi series and play technicians at Delos, the company that created Westworld and the other host-filled Delos Destinations theme parks.
We can’t reveal any more about the scene in which D&d are featured, but rest assured you won’t have to wait too long to see it yourself, as “Westworld” Season 3 premieres Sunday, March 15 and Episode 302 airs just one week later.

HBO has finally revealed the titles and episode descriptions for the first half of”Westworld” Season 3, as well as a new batch of images from the upcoming installment. And for all you fans who love to obsess over Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s puzzle-box sci-fi series, these photos should look like Everything to you.
According to the pay TV channel, the 1-hour, 8-minute Season 3 premiere, which airs Sunday, March 15, is called “Parce Domine.” That title is also the name of a Roman Catholic antiphon that, loosely translated from Latin, means “Spare, Lord, spare your people: Be not angry with us forever.”
But before you go theorizing about what the heck that title implies for Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) and company when the show returns, you can also chew on the names of Episodes 302-304, which are, in order, “The Winter Line,” “The Absence of Field” and “The Mother of Exiles.

In just over two weeks, the third season of “Westworld” will debut on HBO with an episode so shrouded in mystery that we don’t even know its title yet. But we do finally have a runtime for the installment.
HBO has confirmed to TheWrap that Episode 301 will clock in at 1 hour and 8 minutes. That’s down 2 minutes from the Season 2 premiere and way down from the 1-hour, 30-minute second season finale.
Last month, the pay-tv channel announced that Season 3 of Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s sci-fi series will premiere March 15 at 9/8c — almost a full two years after Season 2 launched with a 70-minute episode in April 2018. As TheWrap exclusively reported, Season 3 will consist of eight episodes, making it shorter than the show’s first two years.
