She was a virologist who headed research that led to significant findings about HIV, its genetic structure, how it invades the immune system, and ways of detecting and treating it. She joined the National Cancer Institute, a division of the National Institutes of Health, in 1973 as a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory led by virologist Robert Gallo.
