More than 100 key figures from the UK film and TV industry have signed a letter urging the UK government to take “immediate action” against Iranian authorities for “gross violations of human rights and women’s rights” in their response to the wave of public protests that erupted last year.
The industry leaders, including Barbara Broccoli, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Edgar Wright, are calling for the UK government to “actively campaign to stop the violence used against the protesters in Iran, including an immediate stop to all executions” and “demand the release of all political prisoners in Iran.”
“Enough is enough. If the global community, which the UK is an active and influential member of, does not act firmly, these atrocities will continue,” the letter reads. “We need to sincerely support the people of Iran in their fight for justice and freedom.”

A growing number of figures from the film and TV industry in the U.K. have signed a letter urging British politicians to support the people of Iran as the country faces global condemnation for executing several of those involved in the wave of protests that erupted last year.
The letter, instigated by British-Iranian filmmaker Babak Anvari, calls for members of U.K. parliament to actively campaign for Iran to stop violence against protesters and end all executions, to hold Iran accountable for the “gross violations of human rights and women’s rights,” and to demand that Iran releases all political prisoners.
Among the almost 100 names to have signed the letter, which is still circulating and gathering attention, are Olivia Colman, Martin McDonagh, Jessie Buckley, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Brett Goldstein, Jonathan Pryce, Hugh Bonneville, Richard Curtis, Gillian Anderson, Felicity Jones, George Mackay, Edgar Wright and Hayley Atwell.

The British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) is moving to gender-neutral performance categories and adding a new feature documentary debut director category. It is also splitting its music honor into two categories.
“Marking the Awards’ 25th year with a shake-up to traditional performance categories, BIFA will present five acting awards that celebrate and reward the outstanding acting talent on display in British independent film,” organizers said on Tuesday. “The new performance categories are best lead performance, best supporting performance, best joint lead performance – for two (or exceptionally three) performances that are the joint focus of the film – and best ensemble. BIFA’s established Breakthrough Performance award sponsored by Netflix remains unchanged and rounds out the new set of awards.” That final award has always been gender-neutral.

The British Independent Film Awards is making some changes for its 25th anniversary, going gender-neutral with its acting categories as it also adds new performance awards, a new debut director category for feature documentaries, and two new music prizes.
In doing away with “actress” and “actor” honors, BIFA joins other orgs that have recently made the change including the Berlin Film Festival, the MTV Movie Awards and the BRITs.
BIFA says it will now present five acting awards: Best Lead Performance, Best Supporting Performance, Best Joint Lead Performance — for two (or exceptionally three) performances that are the joint focus of a film — and Best Ensemble. BIFA’s established Breakthrough Performance award (which was already non-gender specific) remains unchanged.
The Lead and Supporting Performance categories will have up to 10 nominees each while the Joint Lead Performance and Ensemble races will include up to five.

BAFTA has pulled the curtain back on a raft of changes to its Television and Television Craft Awards that it hopes will increase diversity among nominees and winners, and reflect the coronavirus pandemic’s impact on the industry.
The changes follow the publication of the BAFTA Review last month, a dramatic document that promised sweeping updates to the mechanics of BAFTA’s Film and TV prizes following the #BaftaSoWhite controversy. BAFTA also announced today that the 2021 Television and Television Craft Awards will take place on June 6 and May 24 respectively.
Among the measures unveiled today, BAFTA has increased the nominees in performance categories from four to six, while jury members will receive unconscious bias training, as previously announced in the review. Furthermore, as part of their two submissions after the first round of voting, broadcasters will be expected to put forward a candidate from an under-represented group in the performance and craft categories.

The BAFTA Television and Television Craft Awards are enforcing new rules from the 2021 edition of the awards, incorporating the findings of its wide-ranging diversity review carried out earlier this year and the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
The number of nominees in the performance categories will increase from four to six. The total number of nominees in all other categories will remain as four, though the number of named nominees or production company representatives for each entry will increase from four to six.
Hannah Wyatt, chair of BAFTA’s television committee, says that the rationale behind this move comes down to the volume of high-end drama being produced, which is reflected in the number of entries. The Academy wanted to reflect that by having more nominees, she says.
“And then, equally, [it is] also to help continue the progress we’ve made this year and get really good representation in terms of diversity and inclusion as well,...

The End of the F***ing World executive producer Dominic Buchanan has written a six-page open letter revealing that he is “shattered” after being told by BAFTA that he cannot purchase a statue following the show’s triumph at the TV Awards last month.
The Channel 4 and Netflix drama, produced by Clerkenwell Films and Dominic Buchanan Productions, was a surprise big-winner on the night, scooping best drama series ahead of competition including The Crown. Naomie Ackie also took home the prize for best supporting actress.
“I was shocked, I cried; 8 years of this personal journey on this project and our show wins a BAFTA! I won a BAFTA! My name is on the TV screen as a winner!” Buchanan wrote in the letter, which can be read in full here.
But Buchanan said his delight turned to anguish when he was told that he could not purchase an award. This...

Updated: Dominic Buchanan, one of the producers on BAFTA-winning series “The End of the F***ing World,” has questioned the rules preventing him from accessing a BAFTA mask trophy, despite his company’s credit on the show’s award last month.
The show, a co-production between Netflix and U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 that was first pitched by Buchanan and Jonathan Entwistle in 2012, picked up two BAFTAs at the July 31 TV Awards for its second season — a supporting actress win for Naomie Ackie and the prize for best drama series for Clerkenwell Films, Dominic Buchanan Productions, Channel 4 and Netflix.
In an open letter circulated across the U.K. entertainment industry on Monday, Buchanan wrote that BAFTA rules allow only four names to be put down for consideration for best drama series — a writer, a director, a producer and an executive producer.

As a powerful new wave of protests against systemic racism floods the streets of Britain, Black creatives within the TV industry have become increasingly emboldened to speak out and share their experiences of workplace microaggressions, othering and discrimination.
In the last week, “Hollyoaks” star Rachel Adedeji — who is exiting the show — tweeted her disappointment with the Channel 4 soap’s response to the Black Lives Matter campaign by revealing several examples of on-set racism, while an Instagram account called Black in TV has been sharing horror stories from sets. Elsewhere, TV production manager Richie West posted a list of microaggressions experienced by Black people that has now gone viral.
“Being Black and working in the TV industry means toeing the line…it means being one of the only black people in the office,” West lists in the statement. “It means not having your CV considered if you have a traditionally ‘ethnic’ name…...

Exclusive: If Charlie Covell decides to return to her cult drama The End Of The F***ing World, she will be pushing on an open door at Channel 4, which originally commissioned the show and co-produced it with Netflix.
That’s according to Channel 4 director of programs Ian Katz, who told Deadline that Covell “can keep doing that one as long as she likes” when asked if he can coax the writer into penning a third season of the show, which stars Jessica Barden and Alex Lawther.
“I think she might take a breather doing something else for a while, but she’s a classic writer,” Katz said, adding that it is Channel 4’s most-binged show ever. He said The End Of The F***ing World was an example of a co-production that has worked for Channel 4 because it is “deeply relatable and relevant to a British audience.”

Netflix dropped the trailer for Season 2 of “The End of the F***ing World” Wednesday, which featured Graham Coxon’s cover of Billy Idol’s “White Wedding.” And yes, the show used the song in pretty much the most depressing way you could possibly imagine.
In the 1-minute, 31-second video above, you’ll see an even-more-depressed-than-usual Alyssa (Jessica Barden) is getting married, though we don’t get to see to who. And she’s obviously still grieving the apparent death of her boyfriend James (Alex Lawther) at the end of Season 2. For those of you who were hoping that cliffhanger meant he could still be alive, looks like that’s not the case. And based on a telling image in the trailer of Alyssa looking at a bullet with “James” engraved on it, we’re concerned she’s now considering taking her own life.

The producers of two of Netflix’s buzziest series are joining forces to develop new shows, with a focus on work by women and people of color.
Dominic Buchanan, the executive producer of “The End of the F***ing World,” and Eleven, the shingle behind “Sex Education,” have inked a production pact giving Eleven first look at Buchanan’s TV projects. The partners will co-develop and take new shows out to both streaming platforms and linear broadcasters.
About 45% of Eleven’s work already comes from female writers and directors, but the company wants to increase the proportion of its shows from people of color.
“There are a disproportionately small number of stories that are told by women and people of color,” Eleven co-founder Jamie Campbell told Variety. “We have been quite self-analytical as a company to work out how we can find more of these stories and how we can be more inclusive.

Channel 4 and Netflix have teamed up to commission a second series of the Rts Award-winning and BAFTA-nominated series The End of the F***ing World.
The first season was All 4’s best performing exclusive single series and become its most-binged show of any exclusive single series. So, really it was only a matter of time before this news broke.
The first series saw teen outsiders James and Alyssa embark on a road trip which descended into darkly comic chaos. After finding themselves embroiled in a series of violent events they are soon trailed by two uniquely mismatched police detectives, played by BAFTA-winning Wunmi Mosaku and Gemma Whelan. After a shocking series finale, only one thing is certain…expect the unexpected.
